      Just my humble opinion..
I have been playing the guitar since the year of 1971..
I was born in the year of 1961 and have followed Genesis since the year of 1973..

I am a huge fan of Steve Hackett but I always slightly disagreed with him when he would say that with ATTWT, Genesis just did more of the same. Not really, the songs are shorter than most of the ones on W&W, the guitar licks are played by Rutherford obviously and Phils drumming is even somewhat different than on W&W, Quicker and sharper in some ways, so not the same sound altogether. Sorry Mr. Hackett, just my two cents.

He still had that amazing voice in December 1977, but somewhere in 1979 or early 1980 his voice became raspier. You can hear it best in the Duke song, Heathaze. When he sings softly at the beginning he has the old voice and then when he starts singing harder he has his new voice that sounded like Rod Stewart or Don Henley. I dont know if the stress of his divorce had any impact on it, probably just a coincidence.

I know what I like - Genesis, my favorite band since I started buying records as a teenager - but in the case of this single, I don't like what I know!
"Many Too Many" is a somewhat sad ballad. It reminds me of my mother and myself, our troublesome relationship. She is a very dominant character but I'm not submissive, something that has affected me and my relations to the opposite sex.
Many too many have this experience and still we don't talk about it, like it was forbidden...taboo.
We are not the same, man and woman. If you don't believe me, read "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" by John Gray. You'll be surprised!
Deborah Tannen has also written interesting works concerning this subject-matter.

The music of the last few decades without him is simply inconceivable. Many thanks for that, Phil. With these wonderful songs, you will forever be immortalised in our hearts and for many generations to come.
