I owned the Tamron 150-500mm and on the A7RV it wasn't very sharp. The 60-600 is about the same if not slightly sharper and the new Sigma 500mm 5.6 is razor sharp. I guess it comes down to which camera you're using as well, if you use an A7III then all of those lenses will be perfectly sharp. Higher mp camera's are way more demanding.
I suggested (2 videos ago) doing a video about walk around zoom lenses, and you've done 2 videos with zoom lenses. Im sure its just coincidence. I love your channel!
Great review. Wasnt even aware this existed. When you said reasonably priced. I rushed over to Sigma's, saw the price and still had a reasonable heart attack. I supposed primes at this length are typically expensive though.
Fair enough. I'll have to wait till I can get someone else to pay for i........can work up to affording something this but maybe the 60-600mm might be something to look into.
Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this one for testing. Currently, the only option for telephoto in my collection is an old Quantaray 70-300 for f-mount that I have adapted with a Viltrox speed booster to my a6700. It's not horrible, but neither would I call it particularly good. I shot some slow-mo video of hummingbirds with it and loaded it into the same timeline as some footage I shot of the same birds with the 70-200 GM2 I had rented and it was really an unfair comparison. So I suppose it's time for me to finally pull the trigger on a competent telephoto.
I love my Sony 200-600 but it's so big to carry around on a hike. I love the versatility of a zoom but this prime is very tempting. Might start saving for it.
What is crazy is that the Sigma 60-600 hovers around the same f-stop, gives you far more versatility and is $1,000 cheaper. I'd pass on that 500mm just because of that. BTW, I also love my 200-600 Sony. Very sharp on my A7R3 42mp Sony camera. There are so many alternatives to choose from, getting harder and harder as Tamron and Sigma have picked up their game.
Nice review. Good to know Sigma is trying to meet market demand. I had hoped that such a lens was going to be launched. Hopefully Sigma isnt going to stop there and work at making a 600mm f5.6 as well. Would you think Sigma is going to make one?
You look very professional with this lens, hope they let you keep it. Not sure if this would be so cool on my ZV-E10 though, but it sure looks like a really excellent lens.
I currently use the Tamron 150-500 with my Sony A7RIV. I would like more reach and ability to add Sony 1.4X TC. Unfortunately the Sigma 500mm f5.6 will not be able to utilize a TC and probably never will due to Sony's rules on 3rd party TCs. So, I will likely be upgrading to the Sony 200-600.
I use the 200 600 at 7.1 for sports and I would have been interested in this lens for its reduced weight and size as well as better IQ at 5.6. Unfortunately, AF tests by Jared Polin (50% hit rate in my use case), Damien Bernal and Amazing Nature Alpha show that AF would be frustrating.
Hey Mark, I live in Japan and will go to the Camera&Photo Imaging Show tomorrow. Most of the Japanese Makers will be there. I will mainly go to the Sony booth. Is there any questions that you think would be nice to ask ?
Like the lens very much; could be my (very) long lens on a6700. However still no possibility to rent it at “my” store. AND: question Why would sigma not make a speedbooster so that makes the lens for the APSC sensor cameras two lenses: > one with extra reach 750mm > one with gaining 1 stop light at 500mm. In that way it’s price is more “bang for the buck”.
As for the competition, I think there may be one final smaller and cheaper option - the Tamron 150-500 F 5-6.7! Okay, it's F6.7 at the long end, but 6.3 at ~480mm and the aperture values are pretty good throughout the zoom range. One advantage is the good macro capability!
As aps-c user I would add that tamron also have better macro than 150-600, 200-600 and sigma 500, and less CA than 150-600 and 200-600. My copy of 150-500 is actually sharper than my sony 200-600(on aps-c).
Thank you for this great review. When you talked about noise reduction, you didn't mention the best denoising software with one of the best internal lens and camera profiles - DxO PureRAW! I have all 4 options: DxO PureRAW 3, DxO PhotoLab7, LrC and Topaz Photo AI. Currently no software is able to kick out DxO.

Great video. I have been looking for a telephoto lens for sports, soccer specifically, for my Doug. My 18-200 is good, but could use some extra reach. Any recommendations?
the Tamron is a great lens. This Sigma will be sharper, have better stabilization, be a bit lighter and 5.6 at 500 Vs 6.7. but the Tamron is less than half the price and gives much more versatility.
Mark, I'm in the market for a super zoom. I've been going back and forth between the Sony 200-600 and the 100-400GM. I kept going back to the 200-600. Now you've thrown in the Sigma 60-600. The 500 prime is out of my price point. What do you recommend between the Sony 200-600 and the Sigma 60-600? I am using the a6700. Thanks for pushing me!
You sound exactly like me! Lol however after seeing how big they are I opted for the Sony 70-350 and fits in my travel backpack… love it but definitely would like that 900ff equivalent. Also. A6700
I might get the sony 200-6000 myself. I love that reach and it's less heavy than the 60-600. I also like the internal zoom. But you can't go wrong with either
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis One thing I believe you mentioned was that shooting an a6700 is about the same as shooting an FF and cropping the photo. On a rare night, I shoot the moon in its best position, straight up, with both the a6700 and A7R3. When I blow up the moon taken with the R3, and compare the two, there is virtually no difference in sharpness. There may be when shooting with the A7R5, but atmospheric interference takes a toll on the image. I think the a6700 is the greater teleconverter out there. Heck, if you want to be cheap, get the a6100, even used, for close to the cost of a teleconverter. I never cared for them as there is some degrading of image and a loss of a lot of light. A used a6000 at Audorama goes for $336. KEH also has cheap older aps-c Sony bodies that are cheaper than the teleconverter.
The only thing stopping me from buying this lens is no TC support for Sony camera's which is a shame. I don't need more than 15FPS at the moment, but for future proofing myself it's also a shame Sony caps 3rd party lenses at 15 FPS.
I`m interested in telephoto zoom lens for Lumix S5II. Mostly shooting sports in 1080p, but although I shoot ivents.
