Yes. I love cannon ergonomics, and color but I really really hope they open the rf mount at a minimum to sigma and possibly Tamron and release a pro/ semi pro level body in the 30 ish megapixel range to properly replace the EOS R. In my opinion the r8 was really an EOS RP replacement not a replacement for the EOS R.

I have a Sony 500 F4, which I only ever really shoot at f5 (slight hazing wide open, simply perfect at f5) for field sports (soccer/football/cricket). If this thing is even close to the sharpness of mine, and based on the samples I'd have to admit it looks like it is, then it's a no-brainer - this would be amazing!

One of the issues with teleconverters is that they magnify the flaws of the lens. Prime lenses have fewer flaws, and if this lens is as sharp as people say, it should be a great fit to use with teleconverters.

Too expensive for what is it. They could at least make it F/4 or unusual F/4.5. Though I'm sure it's much sharper than the Tamron 150-500 and Sony 200-600... I wonder if it's possible to buy the L mount + TC and use a L to E mount adapter to make TC work on Sony bodies. But I'm sure image quality and af will take a hit, but just curious about that

Good Review, showing the argumentation pro and con for prime vs. zoom. The new Sigma lens seems to be a great lens. I own the 5.6 400 from Canon and liked it a lot. Compared to the EF 100-400 mark i it was the better lens. I bought a 2nd hand 100-400 mark ii last year and this one is on the same IQ level. But. The flexibility of the 100-400 mm zoom range, the close focus capabilities, the image stabilizer, the shorter built make it a walk-around-lens for my style, which is "100mm is standard focal length". So I would always prefer the zoom but: If you lug around different lenses, e.g. a 35-135 + the 500mm for hiking this might be the better solution.

Damn, that lens would be sweet if Canon would allow 3rd party RF lenses. Combined with the ART-lenses it might even make me consider a system swap after 30 years...

I think I would’ve been okay if it had more girth and was a 4.0.. obviously it would’ve been more expensive and heavier

Sigma + Skittles = sexy combination. Except if you're Canon because you can't have that combination. Smh

It’s obviously for people who hike and do wildlife photography. Same reason the Nikon pf’s have been wildly successful

God I’m so tired of these awesome lenses coming from Tamron and Sigma and them literally releasing nothing on Canon. Not even an EF version ffs.

Nice review Fro..........I'm definitely considering this lens. I do own the 200-600 and use it primarily for photographing birds in flight hand-held with my A1. I'm wondering if you can quantify how much sharper this lens is than the 200-600? I know that's not easy to say for sure but if you could take a shot at it I'd appreciate your thoughts.

This lens at 500mm is much sharper than 200-600 and if you crop the output to 600mm it is still a little bit sharper than 200-600 at 600mm

I would, well, I went with the Tamron 150-600mm G2 f/5-6.3 Di VC ABCDEFG and I absolutely love it. I am shooting that adapted to a Canon EOS R8. and 2 EOS M5s.
    Fantastic lens

We are talking about weight again useless i think! We dont need a 500 mm lens from sigma we have the 500 f4 sports!! we also have 500 5.6 nikon! Sigma made a lens for sony thats al they did! 3500 euro's thats very expensive! sony 200 600 1600 euros! and you have zoom for wildlife!

How does the lens compare to the Nikon 600mm f6.3 PF? I'm interested in adapting the Sigma 500mm f5.6 to my Nikon ZF or pairing it with an A7CR, or getting the Nikon 600mm f6.3 PF for my ZF then getting a Z8. The Sigma appears significantly smaller but the Nikon has more reach + the 1.4x.

Who is it for? Me. I regularly hike 3-7 miles for wildlife shots. Weight is a big deal. The 200-600 gets heavy quickly. If I am shooting birds, about 90% of my zoom shots are at the longest setting everywhere in the world but Galapagos (where animals have no fear of man). I loved the Nikon PF, and this will be a must-have.

Hard to believe rich hobbyists and pensioners will be lining up in large numbers to buy a lens that slows their A1/A9 down to 15fps. Finding an elusive warbler with a fixed 500mm ain’t easy.

How does it compare to something like Nikon 500 f/5.6, Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 and Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 because I am pretty sure that they’ll launch for Nikon Z mount soon as well.

Damn looks like a 300 f4 or something like this . Sure a 200-600 is very versatile but when i had a tamron 150-600 i only used it at 5-600mm anyway . This one is faster , much smaller and alot sharper so for me this would be a no brainer if i shot Birds or sport etc

Come on, Fro. That was the weakest “L-Mount Alliance” ever.
You’re out of practice. They need to release more L-Mount lenses.
