      About the aspect ratio... out of curiosity I tried it myself, as I also have an ultrawide monitor (3440x1440). So I set my display into 1:1 pixel mode, then set the system resolution to 25060x1440, which shrinked the dektop correctly into 16:9 ratio, with vertical bars on sides. Then I launched the game (Last Light Redux), set ingame resolution to 2560x1440, but the game still rendered the whole size of the display, and in a ultrawide ratio, as if I have not changed the resolution at all. So something is defenitely wrong there. Funny thing is some part got deformed, like the loading screen was clearly running in 2560x1440, even tho it was stretched horizonatally, filling the whole screen. But the in-game 3D environment still kept its ultrawide format and aspect ratio, despite settings being 2560x1440. I would expect it to either stretch that resolution on whole screen, or run properly in 16:9 ratio bars on the sides. So it is very weird. The other thing that I realised is, I was not able to Alt+Enter the game, making it run in windowed mode. I pressed the Alt+Enter and nothing happened, as if the game does not have a windowed mode at all. This might be an explanation partially, seems like the game is fixed into full screen mode and has issues accepting and properly rendering different aspect ratios, other than native. I tried different games in 16:9 resolution and they had no problems displaying it correctly in the windowed/borderless mode, with black bars on sides. I do not know if this helps you in some ways, but this is what I experieneced.
      Anyway really loking forward to your Exodus review.

      I think Metro Last Light was my favorite of the franchise. I was pretty satisfied with the good ending.
      I know it's not a "bad" game. But I don't care for the direction Metro Exodus went in. Felt more like Russian Mad Max than Metro in my opinion. Not every great linear single player focused FPS needs to go open world and add crafting/RPG elements either.

    While I get why some people might say that Last Light has some CoD DNA in it, I think this can easily be applied to 2033 as well. I mean, does anyone remember that horrible on rails (literally) turret section ? It's one of the few negative aspects of 2033, just like how the boss fights are for Last Light. And we all know that the reason for these sections even being a thing in both games is because they were released at a time where CoD was at the peak of its popularity, and every FPS was trying to be to be exactly like it. But it the end, despite these shortcomings, neither of these games are like CoD and the series didn't go full Michael Bay with Last Light as some of it's detractors think.

    • @DMCMaster550
      @DMCMaster550 3 роки тому +15

      Yup. 2033 definitely has similarly scripted moments. There's the aforementioned on rails turret section. There's the scripted chase in Armory. There's the hand car section. Last Light just had a couple more.
      Honestly, the CoD detractors are odd, because, Metro, even original 2033, has a similar gameplay formula. You're generally following some NPC, who tells you what to do. There's little outside of the main way forward. Every now and then, there's a scripted, on rails, set piece. Parts of the story are told through loading screens between missions, complete with narration.
      The big differences are that, sometimes, Metro kinda lets you loose, to tackle an area as you wish, generally the stealth sections, there's more scavenging and equipment management, and there are hub areas where you can get immersed in the metro.

      I always saw Metro 2033 as a STALKER CoD game and Last Light as a HL2 STALKER game.. 2033 is way more linear and has more action "cool" cinematics than LL.. I mean, I don't believe that Last Light has more action than 2033 has, it's just way better and more easy when it comes to gunplay and stealth.. in 2033 the AI is basically cheating so in gun fights you are especially on higher difficulties dead in mere seconds where in LL the Ranger Hadcore mod isn't as punishing as was the highest difficulty in 2033.. the AI is more balanced which in turn made it, well, dumber in the stealth sections but I still always play Metro games stealthily so I didn't that much a problem with it

    • @playmsbk
      @playmsbk 2 роки тому +4

      Having only played the redux versions it certainly felt to me that LL was intended to be played in spartan mode as a more action packed experience, spartan mode in 2033 made artyom op while survivor mode in LL made the game very hard in specific parts, which to me signifies it wasn't as well optimized for this game. Still, I'm kind of a masochist and love metro's brand of survival action, so I only recommend survivor mode, both games offer more focused experiences with that setting imo, with the action setpieces serving as welcome breaks as long as you don't waste all your resources on them.

    if you want advice on how to get the true endings in Metro it basically boils down to:
    - refraining from killing unless it is necessary. killing before the enemy is engaged in combat with you reduces moral points.
    also you can:
    - not getting spotted in a section gains you a moral point
    - Doing good deeds like giving to the poor or helping people gains a moral point
    - playing musical instruments gains moral points (for some reason)
    - finding hidden stuff like stashes and notes gains moral points
    - listening to people's coversations gains moral points
    - there are other moral points which can be gained through more arbitrary and nonsensical means, for those you should consult the wiki.
    also sometimes enemies will surrender when you've killed enough of their buddies. watch that you don't kill surrendering enemies as you can lose MPs for it

    • @anonimus370
      @anonimus370 3 роки тому +2

      Don't know if this applies to the originals, but I just recently replayed the first 2 games' Redux version while killing pretty much every enemy and a lot of them from stealth, BUT, doing almost all the good deeds and good the good endings in both games. So you can kill even unaware enemies and get the good ends.

    Okay, Raycevick AND Avalanche have Metro bids drop within HOURS of each other? Some Scooby-Doo fuckery is afoot.
    Edit: on the subject of the Redemption ending, Metro Last Light really makes you EARN Artyom’s Redemption ending, which goes beyond doing the obvious “good” morale choices-you, as Artyom, are much more experienced to the social complexities in the Metro, but he has a very group-over-individual mindset, so moral points are earned based on whether or not he does the right thing and grows his understanding of people’s nature. So listening to certain dialogue, playing instruments, performing kind or merciful acts, finding certain hidden areas, etc., and also by not being violently belligerent in action in relation to the ghostly, unidentifiable attackers. You cannot kill every human in the game and still get the good ending.
    The Metro wiki has a semi-comprehensive list in the Moral Points page, but it is not the sum total.

    • @rienstien1
      @rienstien1 3 роки тому +4

      Yeah I seem to remember needing to have barely any kills to achieve the good ending. With the newer stealth system you can either silently kill or silently neutralize (brass knuckles to the face). Definitely more of a challenge than it was in 2033.

    • @Minnesota_Fatts
      @Minnesota_Fatts 3 роки тому +1

      @@rienstien1 There’s a lot of behavioral moral checks you make during the game-especially when you go through the zone with the Baby Dark One. I distinctly remember getting by accident, my controller died during the safety check during the red line escape, sitting through the whole check nets you a big moral bonus.

    • @CheriShin21
      @CheriShin21 2 роки тому +4

      Actually in both 2033 and last light I always kill (kill, not knock out) all enemies and always get the good endings, even after leaving all bandit, nazi and red outposts without a single living person, except for those soldiers who surrender which you should just knock out. I even sometimes deliberately earn one or two bad points (you can even watch the Venice thing) and still get the good endings. Killing isn't a major factor for the positive moral points. What's more important is helping other people/beggars, exploring ALL hidden locations/stashes and listening to ALL conversations (including enemies, before killing them). So stealth is really the way to go, because you won't be able to listen to enemy conversations if you go in guns blazing).

    It got me thinking though, switching to English dubs doesn't make sense because rather than it being a dub so you can understand it, it feels like it's more a dub because all the characters decided that even though they're Russian and in Russia, they'll all speak grammatically perfect English but with Russian accents to remind you they are in fact Russian not English?

    I don't know if anyone has brought this up yet, but the console ports on Redux use the alternative watch, rather than the original Last Light watch. The reason you saw the original nixie tube Last Light watch, is because you were playing on the Spartan mode for the console playthroughs. The original 2033 style analog watch, is used when playing in Survival. It's just a neat addition that they added, for the different modes. Spartan, being more like the original release of Last Light, uses the original LL watch, which displays, down to the second, how much air you have in a filter. Survival, being more like the original 2033, has a watch that, while easier to read, only gives you a quick approximation of how much air is left.

    So at the end you mentioned the watches, and it should probably be noted that there is a reason they are different, and this even ties into 2033 redux. The easiest way to say it is survival mode is 2033 while Spartan mode is last light. With the original last light game you could take a few more bullets, the enemies could take a few more bullets, there was more ammo in the world, stealth was less of a mechanical focus (and I honestly believe more difficult but not in a good way because of it), and the watch was different. This is what you get when you choose Spartan mode for the redux games, and if you chose survival you got the 2033 game. Now I’ve only played the PS4 redux and the PC redux, but if you were playing on Spartan mode in either last light or 2033 your watch actually changed to the digital cathode ray tube watch instead of the analog one.
    Also some extra fun facts about these games (or at least last light and the redux versions). If you pull out your lighter the flame and smoke trial shows you where you need to go. You can see Pavel use this when you’re in the tunnels with him early on in the game. It should be noted you already have a compass that does this, but I find the lighter more useful and enjoyable to look at.
    At least in the redux version during the entrance to D6 mission where you get the flamethrower if the anomaly gets to your car it crashes the game. Now this could just be on my end, but I’ve had it happen 2 times on PC and once on PS4 so I’m going to say it’s intentional, or at least a consistent bug.
    Finally to get the good ending in 2033 it’s far more about being observant than it is being good. Since the change in the ending is far more about Artyom realizing the world that makes sense. Now with last light it’s far more about actually being good than being observant. This makes sense since the ending is generally based off of how the dark ones see you rather than anything Artyom sees in himself. So to get the good ending in last light you almost have to play as a pacifist for most of the game while also listening in onto every conversation. If you want some extra goodies helping the mama bear at the end, getting the boy his teddy, saving the screaming woman from bandits, save the woman and child from bandits, tipping the bartender in Venice after you trash the place, and not killing anyone can help you. It should be noted that killing nazis, and bandits don’t normally count toward good or bad karma, and any fight where it’s impossible to continue without killing someone won’t hurt you either, but pretty much every other time it will.

    I remember playing this back in the day when I got it as a free PS+ game. I had no knowledge of either the books or the previous game, but I decided to give it a try. I had mixed results. I greatly enjoyed the premise and atmosphere, but I quickly found some catastrophic issues with the gameplay. Given that the game featured stealth gameplay with non-lethal takedowns, I immediately began working towards a no-kill run, only to find that the stealth was BROKE AS F. I swear, it felt completely random at times whether enemies would detect me. Some enemies I could walk about a foot in front of them and get no reaction, while other times I'd be 30 ft. behind an enemy. In complete darkness, and they'd suddenly whip around and start shooting me. And the sweet spot for preforming takedowns was so specific. I actually had times where I had to back up because I was too close to trigger a takedown, and forget it if you were even a little off-center. Maybe it was an issue with the port, or maybe it was an issue with me, but this game has been cemented in my mind as having the worst stealth mechanics of any game I've ever played. About halfway through I got so frustrated that I said screw it and started sniping enemies with my air rifle, and suddenly the game started to feel fun. I made it through the rest of the game killing everyone and everything that got in my way, and although I disliked seeing Artyom die in the end, he went out like such a badass I couldn't really complain. I never even knew there was another ending until I heard the announcement for Exodus and was like "But how, he's dead!" I've always meant to go back and give the game another try to see if the stealth was really as bad as I remember, but never gotten around to it, so if anyone else had these problems, please let me know that I'm not imagining this! Great review as always!

    Anyone AND I MEAN ANYONE comparing this masterpiece to COD needs mental help. This is, along with 2033, one of the best fps experiences I have had since HL2 back in 2004. The level of detail, polish, atmosphere, story, and amazing gameplay is second to none. Saying this game is the RE3 of the series is also so stupid, Last Light is frankly the best game in the Metro series whilst RE3 is nothing more than an RE2 expansion and don't get me started on the shambles that is RE3 remake. Also saying that 4A at the time of Last Lights development were comparable in size to that of Activision, EA, or Ubisoft is downright insane.

      He was not comparing it to COD... just saying that the game got more an an explosive set piece action spectacle element to it and it obviously does. He is completely right that every FPS at that time was trying to be like COD in that way. Just like him though, I don't mind those elements when they are done well. With the RE analogy, I think he was just going for the fact that RE3 was the last true "tank control"/fixed came angles game in the mainline series, before the radical evolution with RE4. As far as the last statement, I agree with you that he was definitely wrong there. While their team was expanded by quite a bit, 4A was famously making this game in some nasty conditions and facing obstacles that would make any AAA dev house's employee quit in a second.

Just as the Xbox Series S is probably the most widely available new console on the market and most available for that experience at a low price compared to PC.

    I think the speed of the romance plot actually fits very well the Metro world and making it more "believable" (by modern humans standards) would actually subtract from it. Life in the metro is harsh, potentially short, specially for a Ranger. She firsts meets Artyom, he is technically just another guy she met. She puts up a strong persona, very guarded, don't want anyone getting stupid ideas around her ass, even more so when they're alone topside with no one else. Also, she might have to shoot him when they first meet, so she is keeping herself sane. Specially because she already heard of him, and his exploits with her father, so she probably already has some interest in the legend himself. Her initial dialogue is less "I hate you" and more "I am testing to see if you buckle or if you're half as much as the story say you are". But at the same time, she sees you fight, she then sees you survive hell, and she is attracted to that sorta thing. It does help Artyom didn't do anything weird around her and didn't seem intimidated by her, big bonuses. Plus, he rescues her later, and even put himself in danger by taking of his mask rather than taking a safe and otherwise easy shot at whatishisname who she thought was gonna slit her throat anyway.
    Again, this life is harsh and often short. And when she finds herself feeling extra lonely, hopeless on her long term survival, and alone with a guy who has attractive attributes about himself, who has save her dad and her life, and hasn't been an ass to her, man, of course she is gonna jump on that. Like, 99.999% of people in a similar situation would.

    One other thing I noticed wrt the moral choices, in the scene with Anna at the end of the Oktyabrskaya level, you've still got the mask on, albeit cracked, which means you tried plugging Lesnitsky and doing that classic routine to get him off of Anna. The game counts this as one of the biggest moral choices it has, if you want to get the good ending you pretty much cannot make the wrong choice here, you've gotta take him at his word and take the mask off in order to get the moral point.

    Dunno if many people read the books. 2034 mostly follows Hunter, as it turns out he survived his expedition into the Dark ones territory but was traumatized. Don't want to go any further to avoid spoilers since what I said so far is just the beginning of the book. But I can see why they didn't want to necessarily stop Artyom story. If they wanted to continue with the "voiceless" protagonist, Hunter wouldn't be a good option, and giving up on most of the character connections we had build from the 2033 (Ulman, Han, Miller) was probably also not as appealing, not to mention in 2034 a big part of the story is how Hunter is not "in control" of himself 100% of the time, which would go against the game wanting the player to decide how to play (kill/no kill).
