For the multiplayer at 40:35, whoever is playing as Carver will experience hallucinations. They'll see things that whoever is playing as Isaac can't see. I feel like this is a detail you'd enjoy checking on if you ever go back!

I do kinda wish they’d just committed to the RE5/6 approach and had an AI companion the entire campaign. Giving you the choice of playing Carver or Isaac.
Cause for people like me, who didn’t have anyone in my friend group who were fans of the series, you never got to experience Carver’s side. Or any of the co-op missions for that matter.

That was such a cool addition, I was Carver and seeing crazy stuff, like giant nutcracker statues and my friend was like, what? I don't see anything. We shared screenshots and it was really cool. To me that shows that the people who made it actually cared about the game and did what they could to make it fun.

EA also made the studio change the story a bit. The team wanted to make a inner Issac who keeps talking to issac.

Shadow Isaac was apparently also supposed to be the CO-OP character - Being a figment of Isaac's imagination. Which is also why Carver disappears and reappears at random. Shadow Isaac was also supposed to be the unseen force responsible for picking off members of the group.
EA didn't like the dementia and mental illness theme, so they forced the devs to cut Shadow Isaac.

It’s a very forgettable game that becomes infuriating in the context of being a sequel to two of the best horror games of a console generation. Basically everything interesting from a gameplay or character perspective was destroyed because EA wanted mass appeal. What they did with Ellie (making her a generic damsel in distress and making her a background character when the game includes co op with generic shooter man) is mind bogglingly stupid

By the end of Dead Space 2, and all of Dead Space 3, I kind of took to the idea that Ellie was like Lexine, in that the Marker signals and Brethren Moons had no effect on her. It lines up, she never hallucinates, she doesn't go crazy at any point, and her sanity is never wavering at any points compared to the rest of the cast, so her being immune- even if never stated- made the most sense to me.
Now as for why she heard Isaac? Well, I'm sure Dead Space 4, which would have starred her, would have elaborated on that more. But thanks to EA EA-ing the series, we'll never know.

On the issue of weapons - ironically, I found that a fast-firing weapon was the ideal solution, but the best automatic weapon does NOT come from the Military Engine. It is, in fact, the Telemetry Spike + Diffraction Torus. It creates a rivet machinegun with a pretty low damage per shot, but a RIDICULOUS fire rate, very high ammo capacity, and good stopping power. Slap stasis coating or acid bath on it, sling on an underbarrel force gun for crowd control, and you have yourself the all-rounder ultimate destruction weapon that will let you deal with anything at any range.
Another quirk of the game, as you pointed out, lies in the universal ammo system. Through experimentation, I and many other people have deduced that it ALWAYS, ALWAYS takes 4 universal ammo to reload an empty magazine. Rocket launcher with 2 rockets per magazine? This means each rocket costs 2 ammo. Rivet chaingun with 400 rounds? One ammo equates 100 rounds. What this means is, the magazine size upgrades are the second best ammo saving mechanic in the game (direct damage upgades being the first one). The rivet chaingun (telemetry spike + diffraction torus) starts with 100-150 rounds base, I forget. But slap enough ammo upgrade chips on it, and you can stretch 1 universal ammo to kill several of the tougher necromorphs. The simple truth of more ammo capacity -> more ammo efficiency absolutely ruins any kind of ammo preservation balance the game might have had. And it's all due to the way universal ammo works.

I found out after that there's apparently a lot more substance to many narrative moments if you play co-op because of the cutscene interactions between Carver and Isaac. That's why Carver's character development feels so sudden in the single player only run. The devs built the game around you having seen those co-op cutscenes that further developed him.
Really, if they were dead set on co-op, they should have given the option to play through with an A.I. playing Carver.

Going through Dead Space 1 to 2 to 3 in quick succession, it's quite dazzling how much these games improve visually. They're not Uncharted 1 to 2 level of visual jump, but the consistency is there. DS2 has a lot more environmental variety and higher geometry complexity throughout, vastly more unique art assets everywhere (hell, they render an entire space station for a halo jump - same assets notwithstanding). Dead Space 3 has ambient occlusion, screen space reflections, tons of cube map reflections, vastly more light sources, bokeh like depth of field, higher polycount for enemies and characters, higher rez shadows all around.
In Dead Space 1, the visor light was just a point light, which means it never actually emanated light unto your surroundings.
In Dead Space 2, the visor light was technically still a point light, BUT the devs manually inserted light coming from the visor in a few sections where lights cut out OR mostly when you transition from one zone to another using a vent/shaft.
In Dead Space 3, the visor light is no longer a point light. It's a proper light source. It always emanates light in the shape of the visor display. Well, for the spaceship parts at least. Not sure the visor light still works while on Tau Volantis.

This has to be my favorite retrospective episode you’ve ever done. There were some arguments made throughout your Resident Evil Retrospective I didn’t agree with but completely understood your point, (see: the discussion on what defines survival horror as a genre), same with the silent hill series. But this video on the third Dead Space articulated the extreme highs and lows of this game I couldn’t put into words when I first played it at 13 years old. There’s a strange sense of catharsis that comes from finally seeing someone able to adequately put these feelings to words. Great job as always!

I really don’t like the writing in this game. All of the characters act like they’re in a parody and make so many poor decisions, plus the dialogue felt much more natural in 1 and 2. The sense of urgency and oppression was constant and kept things moving in the other games. 3 rolls around and a lot of that chaotic energy is just... gone? The lore was nice, but Isaac’s journey felt incredibly played out, Ellie loses all of her charm and Carver ends up dooming the universe like what the fuck? Definitely not a bad game by any means but nothing special. I’m just in awe at how uninspired it felt.
I did like how the ending shows Ellie alone on the escaping ship though, keeping tradition since the first game.

Not to mention the added tragedy of missing being saved by Ellie by apparent minutes. I even remember thinking "you jumped out of there fast, Ellie! So, in DS2 I fancied a loadout comprised of the plasma cutter, pulse rifle, force gun, and seeker rifle. In DS3 once I had enough blueprints and materials, I crafted a hybrid SMG+plasma cutter for medium range battles, while my other gun was a Seeker rifle with an underbarrel force gun for long range engagements and crowd control.
I like DS3 but for noticeably different reasons that I liked 1 and 2.

I liked that they opened it up more for exploration, i love its 80s Sci-fi influences it's just missing a haunting retro synth score and I absolutely love the neons of the tech, it's my favorite touch of the game.
I did a second play through after the news of the remake and I love it even more and I never gave a shit about the story, I was just along for the ride lol I gave into the micro transactions in my second play through just to have more of its content and get more out of its gameplay. I'm sure core fans have valid reasons why they don't like it but if you love 80s Sci fi horror like the The Thing & Aliens and just go into it wanting to shoot zombie aliens you'll find that it's underrated on its own, if 3 was the first installment of the franchise I think more people would love it, it also looks awesome on the One X

If you do play coop with someone from start to finish it somewhat fleshes out carver's story as there are organic situations where Carver begins to succumb to the markers influence. For example I played with my cousin and there was this audio file for me (isaac) it was screams and maddening cackles for damn near 10 minutes...I asked my cousin what he was doing why are you listening to this...he said it's my (carver's) wife...with no idea it was coming it was pretty sweet but I do agree that other than their own dead space touches the coop was tacked on for the time period

Loved it! A-lot of Carver's backstory is given to the player playing him on multiplayer only. He sees the enviroments differently than Issac does. Which is kind of dumb. I liked him as a character!

Amazing in-depth analysis. Every single point was carefully fleshed out (hehe) and I found myself interested in every damn word you said. Conveying so much information can often be boring, even for a topic I love like DeadSpace.. but you kept me in it wholeheartedly the entire time! I’ve watched every video to its entirety and I’ve loved the journey culminating to this finale. I’d love to see more of these! Maybe not horror.. but I’d love to see your retrospective on Mass Effect since it suffered the same fate with EA, while also still being damn good games. Hope to see much more soon, man! Much love!

I remember combing some sort of weapon the one that shot the spikes with explosives. It was crazy OP making the game a cake walk. I turned enemies into walking mines and they would kill each other.

I don't know, feels a little disingenuous saying Dead Space failed because of corporate meddling when the devs had full control of everything with Dead Space 2 and even had an insane marketing campaign like you discussed to back them up. The game flopping isn't anyone's fault. Personally I think the series died because survival horror fanbases have a tendency to eat themselves. A common complaint going around was "it's not scary" as if to say that's a be all end all point of criticism which honestly kills a lot of horror games regardless of their quality. RE has only survived because they changed the formula almost immediately back then and the games are all different from one another.

There are multiple factors as to why the franchise got put on ice but given that EA has a history of meddling with games to the point of annoyance you can see how Dead Space 3 was the coffin with the added nail.
Granted that EA didn't see a lot of profit from Dead Space but again this was on them investing too much money to make it and market it. So basically EA needs a better management

28:20 There actually is a weapon part that is available pretty early (a telemetry spike if I recall correctly) and lets you build decent weapons (javelin gun variants), but it's hidden so far out of the way in a 0G sequence that it's highly unlikely someone would ever find it in their 1st playthrough.

Absolutely loved the retrospective on one of my most beloved game series. It's sad to see that Visceral is gone, but the legacy of Dead Space certainly lives on. As for another series: Lost Planet is a relatively niche series that had some very interesting identity changes throughout its 3 installments. I personally found the first to be the most enjoyable, but it could certainly be worth looking into as well.

I keep seeing the theory thrown around that the ending to awakened was actually more hallucinations based on the way the screen fades compared to other fades with hallucinations in the series. Though, I guess that could be reaching, given everything else going on in the DLC. Naturally people would want to hope for something like that, but I guess it doesn't matter with Visceral being dead. Great series retrospective. Haven't watched your other stuff, but this all made me subscribe, so I'll probably go back and watch older stuff at some point.

My experience of this series was literally only this game. I'd never had the correct system before. A friend of mine grabbed DS3 for us to play, as he was a big fan of the first two. He ended up not telling me anything about the world going in so I will say that I was very confused the whole time although I was very intrigued. I also played a player 2, and neither of us had any idea that the player 2 character was essentially hallucinating the entire time and I was commenting on things on screen that he was not seeing, and his character was occasionally talking with other teammates that I was not privy to their conversation. It was a really fun mechanic since we weren't expecting it. I think if you went into this game looking for a spooky co-op it was a good time, but I can see how long time fans could be disappointed with the direction it took.

Your a lucky man as you went through the survival horror depression with a series with just RE. People like me who were there for the start of dead space had to go through it again with dead space. We had hope after RE burned us so bad only for it to crap the bed pretty fast and it legit killed the series for a while which now they are rebooting. Lets hope they learned their lesson.
