It's basically a no frills modern age sports car, I absolutely love it. The drawback, however, was the procedure to attach the roof... Rather a bit cumbersome, but at least it's better than nothing at all...
I wouldn't call this car a failure, it's an affordable supercar and the Boxster is what kept Porsche from going under in the 90s. They made a parts bin car from the 911 and were able to sell them for around $40k, pretty incredible car for the price...I daily drive one.
hard acceleration causes the engine to shakewith moves into he muffler to do the same, on some cars tis not as easy spotted, worse was some opel cars had the dashboard shake as bad if you did the same.

/@@chiefcaptn1922 What do you mean eww? Did you just come home from your Daewoo Owners Club meet, feeling a bit nauseous? Because Porsche boxsters are brilliant
Soon to be a Classic. Rare car. This is a Boxster i'd love to own. Like the Cayman R, this is one of those cars that true car fans recognise and appreciate in my opinion.
I just had the honor of recovering a very early Irish Green 911 all original car #302226. After sitting in a barn for over 20 years it was up and running in less than 48 hours, a true testament to the great Doctors love and passion for the automobile. I have documented the story on my channel of how a 39 year old kid found one of the earliest ground breaking vehicles of all time.
@graynicolas11 I'm pretty sure all exhaust pipes do that, due to sound and alot of (obvious) forced exhaust gas. I had mine welded with little metal strips to my 1990 mustang and it still shakes a bit. So think of how much more power exits those vs. my mustang, and you get the idea. Even higher ups like Lamborghini's shake, except they shroud it carbon fiber in the newer models, so you wouldn't notice.
Gallus A dodge charger SRT8 is better then this, with 470 hp 4 doors a muscle car, classic looks and with it costing $50,000 it is as cheap as a muscle car can get, now you and your family can get up to 160 MPH no problem and do a burnout on the side of the street while drifting in a close circuit, i don't know how much this porsche costs, or how much horsepower it has but you can bet the charger is a better choice, want more fun? buy a dodge challenger for the same price add a supercharger and go as fast as 707 hp at only $70,000
People give the ZR1 shit for having a plastic rear bumper, I don't see why. For one it's light, easy to make and cheap to repair if you get in an accident. Plus people forget the fact that it's roof is carbon fiber. It's not like that means that you're wasting away your money. All cars have plastic somewhere.
I was shocked at how much the end of the exhaust flopped around when the stig launched it, wonder if there was an issue there or if they ditched the rear exhaust hanger to "save weight"
Just started getting in to Top Gear! Hate the new hosts. Is there another car show these guys are on now? Sorry, I don't know much about these guys yet!
Wow. You're brilliant. Do you know how much it costs to maintain an old Porsche? The purchase price is the tip of the iceberg. Think before you comment.
If one has the car serviced and maintained at an independent Porsche specialist, then running and maintaining a classic air cooled 911, should not cost the earth. Granted, genuine Porsche parts can be expensive, but if maintained correctly, the old 911 air cooled engines are almost bullet proof. A friend owns a 1983 911 Carerra, which he bought four years ago. Its in stunning condition, in Guards Red with Black upholstery, and two owners from new, himself and the previous owner. Buy the very best example you can afford and find, and then look after it. The independent Porsche specialist in Cardiff, has affordable hourly rates, and the knowledge to maintain your car.
+Peter Lewis I want you to be correct in this argument, but even if one finds a reliable car, there is still the hunt for a quality example, the hunt for a reasonably priced shop (though it seems you've found one), the headache of worrying about a catastrophic event (known to occur to air-cooled Porsches), and the regular maintenance which would inevitably cost more than on a new vehicle. I know I was irascible, but my point was it takes a special kind of commitment to own a classic Porsche and it certainly shouldn't be driven every day. A new one is 80% of the thrills with none of the headaches.
That is certainly very true, but when one considers the asking price of a new 911 Carerra or even a standard Boxter, the early 911s look good value. I was recently watching the Quentin Wilson classic Car series earlier this year, where he praised the virtues of the late 1960s 911 Scs. Unlike most modern 911s, which do depreciate, rather slowly i know, but they still lose some of their value over the years. Early air cooled 911s are becoming solid investments, and even though one has to spend good money to find an unmolested example, you will make money on one, if you are willing to maintain it well. We all know how much Porsche dealerships like to charge for servicing and repair, but if one can find a really good independant specialist, whose hourly rates are more realistic, maintaining a classic air cooled 911,should not blow the bank.
+Draconior87 the roof is stupid and impractical but the concept of the car is great, light weight, mid engine, manual, NA engine. you wont find anything like it anymore
+Brian C a lot of people actually. One of the main selling points of the 911 was its day-to-day usability and practicality. Models like the Carrera GT, not so much.
Honestly, I think the backseats on the 911 are simply there so men can convince themselves or their wives that the purchase of this sports car is "practical" but how often do most 911 owners use them? IMO, if you want practicality buy a Panamera, and if you want a true, balanced sports car purchase a Cayman or a Boxster. To bash a 2-seater sports coupe because the engineers decided to lean more towards performance than practicality is in my opinion very emotional and ignorant. Which this guy, who reminds me of the obnoxious Piers Morgan is, emotional almost to the point of being a bit feminine for a man. If I owned a Boxster I would trade the look and feel of the Spyder any day for the "practicality" of the regular type. Either way I'm not going to bash one of the greatest sports cars of our generation.
I was just on the Porsche website and I loved everything I read about the Boxter Spyder. I love the car's minimalist nature and all the design elements that evoke Porsche's proud racing history. I wonder what Eberhard Schulz would think of it. Personally I think it's a modern interpretation of his Isdera Spyder which itself was a 1980's interpretation of the 1950's Porsche 356.
Hu? 944, 968 and 928 are transaxles with the gear box in the back and have perfect weigh distribution which is an even better concept that having the weight all in the middle which tends to let the cars spin faster. The 944 was once known as the best handling (stock) sports car. The funny thing is that this reality doesn't bother customers. As with the Boxster, the rear engined (really a bad concept) 911 is prefered by customers and given the stronger engines because people want it that way.
@BurningFliesAlive Well, it just seems that mid-engined is just the way to go, when it comes to supercars these days. And why did disagree with the 'bang for the buck'? The problem with the 911 is you have to work so hard at going thru corners because of that weight in the back. At least, with the Cayman/Boxster, it's just easier.
As a fellow pianist and long-time Boxster owner, I know exactly what James means about the "fizzing" sensation -- I've experienced the same thing when my synapses are overstimulated! (And it really does feel like brain effervescence.)
It's all a matter of style. The Cayman is indeed a coupe, and the Boxster has a soft top. But the Spyder is a slightly different design with the 550 in mind. It has the classic "double hump" in the back and a "stripped down" philosphy.
@officereagle: some 911 owners say so, track day driving instructors also because they make more $ with a 2 laps on a 911 than 6 laps on a Boxster S. The car is brilliant! I've a 'S' model as daily car and it's superb. Very solid and astonishingly fun to drive - always there if you need it. At that price range that's THE best car your money can buy. I love these Boxtaa's.
A Boxter just like that only with black rims just drove past my house - which is rare. Therefore I felt this urge to watch this review! :P
welldone james!! your breaking your own rules now!! amazing...
One of the best looking cars ever.
I wish they would make a 500hp version that could do 0-60 in 3.5 secs or less.
That would be epic.
We have that now!
by making it simpler, the´ve made it simply brilliant
1080p is just mindblowing
