This was the first episode of Red Dwarf I remember seeing. The bit where Kryten's trying to knock out Rimmer made me a fan for life... when Rimmer's banging his head against the wall and Kryten's hitting him with the iron bar, I almost died laughing.
"Oh boy do I hate Dave Lister"? Now THAT was a movie Lister could easily hate! Oh wait, Doug McClure was actually NEVER in a movie that had such a title... Although the way Kryten reacts makes me wonder if Dave Lister is totally convinced that there actually was!
Doug McClure turned down the starring role in Planet of the Apes, which went to Charlton Heston & was a Box Office smash hit making a star of Charlton! After turning down Planet of the Apes McClure only made crappy poor special effects B movies! The Simpsons had a character based on him!
This is one of my favourite episodes of Red Dwarf. I know that Legion is a gestalt entity, combined of four people, but could one also say that Legion is like a human-sized voodoo doll? With the old-fashioned voodoo dolls, people would make them into the likeness of someone they didn't like and jab pins in them, thus making the other person jump. Legion works in a similar way. He stabs his hand and everyone else feels the pain.
Voodoo doll probably works regardless if your unconscious or conscious or even dead, also it doesn't work that way in eg chinese culture, you would at least need the persons private details eg birthdate or belonging eg "hair", to bind them to the doll. Otherwise anyone can just make a doll and kick the sh!t out of it
To anyone who does not know this: The actor who plays Kryten, Bob Llewellyn, now has a YT channel called "Fully Charged", a great show about electric vehicles.
So many good original British shows that they tried to reboot in the USA simply by replacing the cast but failed miserably because it was just the same scripts but different people. Guess they didn't realize how many of us watched and enjoyed the originals with their casts and expected new scripts, not the same. When they rebooted Battlestar Galactica it succeeded because they didn't regurgitate the old script, a lesson to any reboot of Babylon 5 that may be coming.
They did alter the script for American Red Dwarf, and the pilot does have some good original jokes. The reason it failed is because the American producers were not interested in its success and didn't understand the humour.
Perhaps in a similar way that we can see light from stars formed at the start of our universe? But that does bring up a good point, if Cat can smell something that faint, how bad would Lister smell after eating a constant diet of vindaloo chicken and curry, and possible infrequent baths?
@Nick Who I always just thought it was the cat people's version of the hair on the back of your neck or your arms standing up, only with their superior instincts it's a functional precognitive sense.
I have thought of that quote many times as I have had bosses come up to me all in a panic. To them the world was about to end, however I knew that it was only a small inconvenience. Somehow "changing the bulb" and making it flash quickly while doing the same thing made them feel so much better.
I always looked forward to the parts where Rimmer would quote regulations and Kryten would quote something bizarre like that. Also, the sound of Lister's head hitting the floor was perfect.
sadly cat and lister died shorty after the episode ended, sucked into the vacuum of space and asphyxiated, kryten and rimmer too after their electronics died in the harsh conditions of space
The scene with Krytan trying to knock out Rimmer is hysterical 😂😂😂
One of my favourites

Kryten doesn’t get enough appreciation. When I was a kid he was my favourite character.
His acting is brilliant.
To be fair, the star drive did work. It's the bolts securing the star drive to the ship that failed.
JMC standard. A subset of CRAPOLA
Yeah. The Star Drive worked a little too well.
"It is another Doug McClure. You may remember him from such films as..."

@@harry-thepug76 From then on, McClure professed a hatred of every ape he happened to see, from chimpan-A to chimpan-Z.
@@TerrenceNowicki Lol Good One !
This episode introduced me to the concept of gestalt entities. And Rimmer getting twatted over the head with a vase, what more could you ask for!
Sir, is it possible you could have made a missmelling? 😂😂 😂
"Human life takes precedence"
(Proceeds to give Lister brain damage)
But, he's alive.
Lister is more chicken vindaloo than human
Hudzons scan of lister showed his as barely human. Kryten used that loophole to his advantage.
He has a brain?
Has anyone noticed Rimmer's 'H' falls out of place when Kryten smashes the vase over his head?😃

It would perhaps explain a LOT actually.

That thing with the dolls is from the Malleus Maleficorum. It has nothing to do with Voodoo.

Love this show
How does Cat smell something thousands of miles away...through a vacuum?
@VGL Studios quite simply it is a comedy sci fi show therefore you have permission to suspend disbelief
Good question... But the only answer I can give you is... Pure luck?
Those were the parts where I cringed
