This video left me with tears in my eyes! So sweet to see your mother with her family! And looking at old family photos-such a universal tradition!!! Oh the stories that must have been told!
Steve, your vlog put a huge smile on my Welsh husband’s face. The Brain’s beer advert on your rugby shirt…best beer…then the Welsh cakes! We had his own bake stone made by a Caerphilly blacksmith 45 years until very recently, sadly it rusted and became obsolete. We now use a cast iron frying pan, kept specifically for Neil’s Welsh cake batch baking. Hearing your parent’s voices at Christmas, as any Welshman or woman he detected a Welsh intonation but thought it couldn’t be right. But yes…that accent stays a lifetime. Thank you for sharing your heritage, your family who were so pleased to see you!
🇬🇧 UK is so beautiful & so much history & ppl so lovely. Home is best place to be. My Great Granddad from Wales & me, London UK. Canada is nice, but no place like home. So happy you got to go home with family. ♥️👏👏🇬🇧
Lovely to meet the family... and good to see the treasured box of old family photos getting an outing, at 70 years young, it's me with box! Great to see Wales - our convict family members were from Scotland and Ireland.. tracing the family history is never ending.. Thanks Steve, I'll be making the Welsh Cakes for sure! 🍪🦘
That was a super good vlog! I love Welsh Cakes and my family has been making them for years....yum! You have a lovely looking family Stephen! Thanks for taking us along on your weekend.
Your Mother is beautiful! I enjoyed seeing the family gather with hugs & love & fun! We should all write WHO the people are in family pictures, & what relation they are❗️ I failed to do this, & all family who knows is gone. 😭 It’s something we talked about all those years. Do it people ❗️
Thank you so much for sharing this. My grandmother was from Wales. Born there in 1896. The closest I’ve been is to Bristol. It was wonderful to do a bit of the country.
I thoroughly enjoyed this tour with your parents and extended family. My mom, her siblings and parents emigrated from Denmark to Canada when she was young. I remember when we accompanied my mom for our first time there, my uncle (who moved back to Copenhagen) took us to all the places they had lived in the city as well in the country before they moved. He knocked on doors and told the owners the story of their childhood living in the homes and the people were SO gracious and invited us in for a tour and cup of coffee, we were blown away! We too have a treat from Denmark that we make as well, it’s called Æbleskiver - so, so, good!!!
Awe how lovely to see Swansea again , spent every summer holiday on the Mumbles ,I was born and bred in Brecon Powys but moved to France 23 years ago , you brought back lovely memories for me especially Swansea market and of course the cockles and Welsh cakes 😍
Morning Steven, this was such a beautiful video. Seeing your parents, very nostalgic though with scenes of the other family members, a good time was had by all. Yes, a pity Sara could not come with, alas there will be another occasion I am sure. Those Welsh Cakes always look scrumptious. Nothing fancy but oh so tasty. Eating them as they come off the griddle is the best, no fancy toppings just the true flavour of something good. Glad you had the time and all the good things at your weekend visit. It was also good to see you making them Welsh Cakes, I bet Sara enjoyed them as well. It gives me encouragement to try these myself. My husband being Scottish, will surely enjoy them as I know they do not go for fancy cream cakes etc., kind regards, be blessed.
Part of my family are from Wales and rest from London. My great great grandparents. Go to London all the time from Ontario many times a year, but never have gone to Wales to see where the ancestors were born, so I thank you for taking me there.
Bonjour Steve I loved your family reunion in Wales family so precious memories photos dance song just fabulous 🥰❤️The castles still standing while buildings growing around them those Welsh cakes just yummy looking well done Steve time for a cuppa and maybe 2 Welsh cakes Bonjour to lovely Sarah Abiento my loves amazing trip😍😍❤️❤️😘😘👌👌
I enjoyed your trip to Wales Steve! More importantly thank you for sharing the recipe foe Welsh tea cakes, which I love and which I will make! Hi to Sarah as well..
As so many have beautifully described, so enjoyed this episode. I've come lately to your channel and have enjoyed seeing the Chateau coming back to life. This though, shows a family very much alive and vibrant and celebrating heritage that transcends continents. Thanks for sharing. And yes, I'll be trying my hand at Welsh cakes.
Awwww, that was so nice! Looks like you’ve got quite a few fun and interesting characters in your family! Hope to see everyone at the Chateau someday soon!
Thanks Steve! That was wonderful. I have never been to Wales but love hearing the Welsh sing their national anthem when they play rugby against South Africa (where I am from). Greetings from South Africa
Such a nice vlog, and fun to learn some of the history of Wales and see it, maybe not in person, but quite close. Your family seems to truly enjoy the idea of getting together and this makes it so nice you can finally do it maybe more often? Thank you for taking us along. Next time Sarah will join in too and am sure it will be great fun!
Stephen, my grandfather on my mums side are from Devon. I moved to Canada 40 years ago and call Ontario home. Yummy welsh cakes are great! I soak the currents (bought on Amazon) in orange juice plumps the currents up. Delicious!
I have always wanted to go to Wales so thank you for the mini vacation, it was wonderful. I just looked into my cupboard and I do have all the ingredients for the Welsh Cakes so that's what I am going to make this afternoon. Once again thank you from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia CANADA
I lived next door to a Welsh family growing up and never saw any pictures so sharing your visit was heart warming ❤️ and to have a recipe to make those cakes another blessing, thank you!
Wow! That was a treat 🎁 to see your lovely parents again, meet some more of your dear relations, learn some of your familial history, & catch an amazing glimpse of incredible Wales🎉. 🤔 What a fascinating & handsome place to see. The stunning bay. The mix of ancient & more mod architecture. Interesting (& a bit sad🥺) how gentrification changes neighborhoods. At least, you can now ✈️pop over to the UK easier. Perhaps your Welsh relatives will one day 🧳venture to France to see your 🆕 & glorious historic homestead too. 😋 Enjoyed your baking tutorial. Can't wait to give Welsh Cakes a try. Will have to delay until I have folks to visit (or visitors). Otherwise, I would be tempted to eat all that deliciousness myself. (😉 Although perhaps I can experiment by cutting the recipe in half.) 😁 Happy you had a memorable weekend with your loved ones. Sorry Sara had to skip this adventure for the workshop, but hope it went well for her too. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
Glad you're able to return often, yes it's always nice to visit family & friends in Cardiff which I do too from Edmonton Canada. A nice treat to see familiar places.
Many, many years ago my husband was in the US Air Force and was stationed in England . We drove up to Wales with another family for a weekend and stood on the Irish Sea looking at Ireland! It was beautiful!!!
Steve! I was standing in that exact spot on Swansea Beach on March 31st! We rented a beachfront apartment for a few days and visit regularly. My maternal roots are also Welsh and I settled back in North Wales where I've lived for 20 years! Wales is truly stunning and you are rightly proud of your Welsh heritage! Great video! 👍👍👍
🇬🇧 🇨🇦 Having been born in Dorset, England and grown up in Canada, mostly Mississauga, I understand how you feel. I am neither English nor Canadian but a happy mixture of both! 🇨🇦 🇬🇧
Pembrokeshire roots here. Wales 🏴 is such a Beautiful country. Similar story. My Tenby born mother was one of the last £10 immigrants to Australia in 1972 where she met my father straight out of serving 3 tours of duty in Vietnam and married him. I love Welsh cakes too. Really making me feel homesick
Steve, it was so nice to meet and see your Welsh family, especially around the dinning table looking at photos. Families are the same world wide. I'm going to make some Welsh cakes, they looked delicious. Thank you for a lovely vlog. Hugs💞
Hiya Steve & Sarah, small world as the saying goes lol. Anywhoo my grandmother was born in Cardiff. We immigrated from Fife Scotland to southern Ontario & my stepdad worked for Ontario Hydro. I understand your pride re family roots. My heart will always think Home is in Scotland. Thankyou for sharing Recipe yummy! Take care.🐝🇨🇦
So that's where you get your artistic flair from - can you sing too? There is nothing like real family, the bond is strong, comforting and reassuring. My parents are long gone. Enjoy your trip, be safe
Ah now I recognise that castle in Cardiff, met up with my relatives there, for the first time ever the Llwellyn’s. love the welsh accent so musical. Some are very hard to understand, as with any I suppose, pending how broad they are.
Lovely to hear about your Welsh heritage, my son is Welsh as he was born there, when we lived in North Wales for many years. Thanks for sharing your story .
My great grandfather was Welsh. I'll be visiting Wales for the first time next year. I'll definitely try the Welsh cakes! Thanks for sharing your trip.
Hi Lesli which part of Wales was your Gt grandfather from? Have you done your family tree? It’s great fun, let me know if you’d like some help doing it or I’m happy to have a look….not looking for business it’s a hobby and gets addictive!🤦♀️
Croeso adref i Gymru Steve :D (Welcome home to Wales) great video, your Welsh cakes look beautiful. Welsh cakes are traditionally made on a 'bake stone' a very heavy flat steel plate with raised handles that my Mum would put on top of the hob, my Dad was a blacksmith and used to make bake stones for friends and family, i think most welsh homes had one and they are often handed down the generations :D
Thank you so much for bringing me back for a surprise visit to Cardiff, Wales as I had a good friend, Iris Vaugh Zuzik, whom I visited several times in Cardiff, who with her husband, Bart, ran a B&B in a corner of the Castle walls. I loved Cardiff, it was quite thrilling to open up a hugh door in the Castle wall and be right out on busy streets, filled with people, and walk either to the Castle proper or downtown shopping. I hope you took more footage of the Castle because it is quite astounding. Marianne, Chicago.
How lovely you got to visit your Parents Welsh siblings & extended families Your dad still has his welsh accent! I holidayed lot’s in Wales as it wasn’t that far to travel from Manchester before moving to Australia ! My mum always made Welsh cakes on a traditional griddle Thank you for taking us with you🥰
Your Welch family members look like a fun group. Glad you got a chance to spend time with them. I would prefer currents to raisins. I like the tanginess, and they aren't as sweet.
Stephen… there is nothing like family. When I was 24, my husband and I moved to Florida and lived there for 23 years. My family lives in Delaware which is where I was from so once a year we came home for Christmas for a week, which is really hard for me because I was oldest of six children and the youngest is 12 years old and I left home. I have now live in Delaware going on 20 years. I’m going to someday soon make your Welse cakes and while you were eating them I was thinking I bet they be good with a little bit of maple syrup poured on them. Looking forward to your next video.
Lovely video. The Mumbles and Verdis ice cream parlour bring back happy memories of Swansea. Never came back to London without my bag of freshly cooked welsh cakes, totally moreish!
You’re so blessed to have your family from both sides on video. Voices, faces, family tales and folklore- ugh! I’m so jealous!!!🥰
This video left me with tears in my eyes! So sweet to see your mother with her family! And looking at old family photos-such a universal tradition!!! Oh the stories that must have been told!
