REUPHOLSTERING a Chair and Touring HAUTEFORT | Manor & Maker

- We get out the chairs we bought in Vertillac a couple of months ago, and get on with upholstering. Plot twist - not the material we picked earlier! Fun fact: The French word for making over furniture is "relooking".
We then head over to Hautefort for a monthly brocante in St Agnan, and then take a tour of this beautiful chateau and its gardens.

Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.
The chair looks great, your attention to detail was amazing and that was a lot of work, but the results speak volumes. Great job to the team of you.
The chair turned out beautifully. I found this fabric much more fitting for a chateau. The level of detail was incredible. And the explanations very precise. Beautiful job. The visit to the chateau added a very nice touch.
Wow!😮 The chair is amazing. I would have taken one look at the scopes of the project and thought 🤔 : The old chair doesn’t look that bad. 😄 Kudos to you 😍
Love this pattern so much more, suits the Chateau vibe, beautiful colors and matches the wood nicely! Love, love, love!!
I am reupholstering similar chairs and wish I had chosen to do the piping instead of using chair tacks. The wood is so hard and doesn't want to cooperate even though originally had tacks. I only get a few hours a week to work on mine so hopefully I will get them done soon and will be as beautiful as yours. 😍 Thanks for sharing that with us!
I can only echo what others have said - superb choice of fabric and a great job done. And a very enjoyable tour of a lovely château 😊
😍😍Loved the tour of that magnificent chateau!!
Excellent !
Very impressed with your upholstery results! I wasn't sure about the fabric when you first showed it - seemed a little modern - but the finished chair is lovely. Enjoyed the chateau tour. The box gardens are so intricate. What a view to look down on.
Oh thank you so much, such a lovely informative vlog.
You are Masters!!!
Love the channel!!!
May I suggest an electric stapler , I have never looked back, great job !!xx
We tried ours - either it’s not strong enough, or the wood was too hard!
How did they use to attach the trim before hot glue?
Did you work on the wooden part of the chairs?
Fabulous job re-upholstering the chair. Loved the fabric you chose.
I appreciate your detailed content, the effort and expertise as well as the beauty in every vlog. It is so evident you truly put so much care into all you do. Thank you so much for sharing your Manor and all that you are making!
Love how the chair came out. The fabric is beautiful!
I love the fabric choice for the chair... It's beautiful and you all did a great job upholstering it! ❤️
Wow, your talents are without limits! What a wonderful job you made of the chair, I admit that I much prefer the second fabric, so elegant .
me too. So much more elegant looking.
I also preferred the second fabric. More in keeping with a chateau.
Oh my goodness! Everafter is one of my all time favorite movies so thank you for sharing this tour with us! Also you guys did such an amazing job on the reupholstery. Thank you again for sharing! :D
Right?! I always tell people it’s a fantastic terrible movie 😂
The French chair arm pads have a name; they're called manchettes. The new coverings look wonderful, work well done! I'm thinking you dodged a bullet with the original fabric you picked not working out - too acid-trip for me.
Manchettes! I love learning that - thank you! Yeah, the original was a bold choice that wouldn’t have aged well- but I figured my first go round of upholstery might not age well either !😂
A wonderful VLOG. The chair outcome - very French & tres jolie! And Hautefort one of my favorites French Chateaux (totally agree with you about those sumptuous very fluffy upholstered chairs) and the view - incredible! BTW have meant to say for ages that I love the intro to Manor & Maker. Beautiful graphics that segue immediately into content without a minute long intro. Merci S&S!
Thanks so much for the feedback! Much appreciated! Glad you’ve had a chance to enjoy hauteforte!
Manor & Maker, always a joy, especially when you take us on tour of the area. Although watching the completion of the upholstered chair was enjoyable. There are always lessons to learn. Thank you. Hugs💞
i,m glad that other fabric did not work as this fabric is so lovely! Amazing workmanship!
Wow great video. Love the upholstery tips. I have two I need to finish and you have inspired me. I am really enjoying how much more relaxed you are and seeing your sense of humor come through.
Wow! What a great upholstery tutorial. It turned out gorgeous! ❤️
The chair looks great. The castle, gardens and surrounding countryside is amazing. Fairytale stuff.
Really stunning gardens... Stephanie eat your heart out! 😃🥰
My upholsterer always puts full fabric on both sides of the chair cushion so the cushion can be flipped for longer life.
The Chateau gardens are absolutely beautiful .
Love the upholstered chair .Job well done .
If your dogs are nibblers, be cautious with the calla lilies. Perhaps best in an area where the pups can't get to them. Now if you dogs are nifflers, that's a different story! :) That chair was hard work, and you made it look fun while pointing out how challenging it is. nicely done!
making a vlog of any other project and visiting workshops for lessons or just to visit for fun like upholstery ! thanks folks .
You did an amazing job..all of you working on the chair…just loved watching it come together…such patience. 👏🏻🥂
What a lovely chair, the fabric suits it really well. Thanks for showing us the castle, what amazing views. You were lucky living near there.
Loving the reupholstered furniture. Incredible job!!! So much tedious work. ❤
I do like the open archway. It makes the rooms look really regal. The upholstery is looking beautiful!
Thought I recognized Hautefort it was in the movie Ever After.
Beautiful upholstery job team
Correct!
Wow the chair looks as if it was done by a professional upholsterer well done 👏
I really enjoyed your giving us a tour of Hautfort it is amazing.
I really like the new fabric. It is beautiful front and back.
Really loved this blend of chair renovation tutorial mixed with the castle visit. It was a feast for the eyes and soul!! Thank you guys!
Well done upholstery job! That chair with all the curves looks like it was a big challenge to pull taut, without ripples or too many pleats in the moulded corners! I’ve done pretty straight chairs, but never a Berger chair. You’re brave, most of us would have sent it to a professional.
I love Ever After! Thank you so much!!! 🇨🇦😍😁🥰😘
Nice chairs 💖 love that 🍿 movie
The chair really did come out so nice but wow lots of work.
Great job on the chair upholstery. And thanks for the tour of Hautefort. What an amazing place. I wonder how many gardeners it takes to keep those fabulous gardens in tiptop shape?
There is the Head Gardener, three other permanents and a temporary, seasonal team of horticultural students as needed. Brilliant garden
The chair looks stunning, wish I had watched your vlog before I cut my fabric off an old chair this afternoon. But thanks for the tips with the sewing that will come in handy. What a beautiful chateau, another one for my list when I get back to France in September.
Lol.., what timing. Glad we could help a bit!
To get a clean line on your edges cut a thinnish strip of cardboard and tuck it under the fold and then staple into place leaving the cardboard in place of course. It gives a very neat finish as well as making the edging and corners much easier to work.
We did that on the centre back, so that it would not pull against the staples. Great tip, especially for the straight parts (not that there are many on these chairs...)
Duvet, curtains AND headboard
Lol. Correct… I wonder how many metres I need…
@@ManorandMaker it'll look absolutely fabulous!
just a thought ,wouldn't it be fun while you are sight seeing and castleing to don your period costume !
It would be SOOO much fun. I often tour the castles imagining what it would be like to swoosh on the stairs... maybe we shall.....
Team chair reupholsters should be very proud of the outcome of their beautiful chair!!! I don't know if you could use this information when you do your upholstering but I am going to pass it along. I worked in the retail furniture world for many years and when we had to describe a location on upholstery we would describe the locations on the furniture piece as. FSFB= Front side facing back. The first three letters would describe what you were facing. BSF=Back side facing RSF RSFSK = Right side facing skirt. The last letters describe the item as you face it Arm,Back,Seat,Rail and so on. I just thought this might be helpful if you did not already know it.Loved your vlogs and always look forward to them. Love to all at the chateau!!!
🌸🌼🌺🏵
That's super helpful. If I end up doing this regularly, I will adopt it!
Love the material on the chair with that wood finish. Looks beautiful, and the forceps were brilliant! Also blown away by Hautefort. Thanks for sharing your tour of it!
You did an outstanding job on reupholstering the chair.
Beautiful job an the chair❤️from🇨🇦
looks incredible...
Stunning views! Stunning castle and gardens. Beautiful upholstering and lovely company too. Merck!
The 🏰 HAUTEFORT tour was delightful. 📖 A true fairytale setting. Interesting to know a bit of it's history, & your personal memories attached to it . 🥰Might not have recognized that handsome castle immediately, but those stunning
🌱gardens🌿 were another story...
🎬 Ever After: A Cinderella Story was such a guilty pleasure🍿 when it first came out. 🤩 Saw it several times on the silverscreen, & still have a copy of it on dvd📀.
👑 Dougray Scott was 💯% a swoon-worthy ❤️ handsome prince. Anjelica Huston & Megan Dodds played a perfectly 😈devilish mother & daughter duo. 🐴 Melanie Lynskey cleverly captured the considerably more benign step-sister. 🦋 Drew Barrymore was a charming & earnest Valley Girl turned Renaissance romance historic heroine 💘.
French actress Jeanne Moreau as the Grand Dame lent some credibility for the film's 🎞 shortcomings. Plus, the set design & costuming was a fun & fabulous 90s campy inspiration 〰️esp. Danielle de Barbarac's ✨️gossamer & glitz✨️ gown for the fancy costume ball.
😁Great job on the upholstery👏! Sensational finish. Loved the pattern you picked, & enjoyed the whole process!
😉Never bored @ any brocante.

I love Ever After as a guilty pleasure movie!
The chair looks absolutely fantastic !! The castle and gardens were incredible - thank you for taking us on your visit
"Consider carefully, Darling, for Divorce is only something they do in England"
-Everafter -
For some reason that made me laugh every single time. I'm still waiting for a golden opportunity to slide it into conversation some time🤷🏼♀️.
Also, when I was quite young, " Gustaf!! You little snipe!! " always gave me the giggles.
Such a quotable movie. Who can ever forget "From henceforth I shall leave the walking on water to The Son of God", and "I have trod upon an Angel". Or "What if I was supposed to meet the first one second and the second one first and what if the first is hit by lightning before I even meet her"?
"I shall go down in history as the man who opened a door".
" What can you say then, your Highness, that if you treat your subjects as chatel, that you are the cause?"
" Consider your words carefully, Madame, for they may well be your last".
And I could be wrong, but I think the following was the line that started this saying:
" I just came for the food".
Gosh, it must be quotable because I haven't watched it for years, and remember all that🤷🏼♀️.
Beautiful fabric you chose. What an amazing result!! Brilliant video again guys. Many thanks for sharing. ☀️🙏😊
Awesome video!

Stunning Chateau and wonderful idea’s 🥰 fantastic job with the upholstery of your chair Sara 🌸💕🌸
I love this place…..one of my favorite movies! ❤️ Oh and the wonderful covered walkway that was in the movie! And you only live 15 minutes from there? That is amazing!
Oh those beautiful notions, i was saying score! grab those.lol. That took restraint to leave them behind. 😂 As always this was fun and educational. Love your channel. Chair was beautiful. You are very talented.
Well done, chairs look lovely. I like the fabric you used 100% more than you first choice. Best wishes from Australia x
Another wonderful visit. It's so easy to spend time with you both. I've followed you since Chateau Lalande. Your videos are nicely paced and top notch!
I love the way you upholstered the chair. The fabric and your needle work is incredible!! You have so much patience. Hello from Oakville. I love your vlog.
Wonderful collective job on the reupholstering of the chair. It turned out magnificently. Well done all.
Thank you for the excellent demonstration of reupholstering a chair. I love your vlog.
Great job on the chair. Love the material. What an amazing chateau Hauteforte is. I’ll need to go watch EverMore again. The gardens, the art work, the tapestries, the tile floors, the amazing furniture, etc. It was a feast for the eyes. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
Beautiful job! Has Phillip and Stephani watched this? You are all so amazingly talented.
You both are so talented… the chair is beautiful. I love it. And your chateau is beautiful. I love seeing all your adventures. Go, go while you can ❤️💐🌺
A wonderful job upholstering the chair it looks stunning, beautiful fabric and colour. Some great helpers also. Always Interesting content love those markets nothing quite like that here in Australia.
This is just an FYI but it looks like Hautefort is the same chateau used in an old David Niven and Deborah Kerr film called Eye of the Devil. It was a creepy movie.
A fabulous re upholstery job of the chair - it's beautiful! We spent a glorious day visiting Hautefort a few years' ago -- it's fairytale wonderful!
18:57 You admired Arum Lillies and every part of that plant is poisonous. It is nicknamed the funeral flower because it once was the most popular flower used at funerals. Aren’t I the bearer of good news this video? Sorry just letting you know.
The Chair Looks Amazing I Like The Colour” A Lot Of Work Good Term” It Looks New💕
Wow, your re-upholstering job was wonderful! I wish I had a quarter of your talent. Lovely tour you took us on!!! Thank you!
The chair looks fabulous. I love the fabric. Hautefort castle and gardens are beautiful. I think I may like the gardens even more than the castle.
The fabric you ended up with is so much better than the original choice, modern but very adaptable. When did you pick up upholstery skills?
Hello Sara and Stephen. Thanks for a lovely video. The chair looks really marvelous and comfy to sit in. I enjoyed the tour around Hautefort. You really do live in a wonderful area. Best wishes to you and your guests.
Gorgeous castle! Thank you for let in us discover it with you 🫶🏾❤️
Wow, beautiful upholstery! Love the fabric choice!
Chair looks amazing! Well done managing those ‘little puckers’!
Thanks for the tour of the stunning Chateau and surrounds, it was just beautiful! Great job on the chair also, very pretty fabric.
The turned out so lovely! We are coming to France for our 40th anniversary. I will add you to the list for a visit. I saw you first at Laland with Stephanie. I must wait un til 2024. It will go fast.
A Hint from my upholstering: I use an exacto knife to trim the arm pads after I've stapled them in place. The new fabric is a much prettier and longer wearing fabric for the chairs.
Beautiful place to live. Thank you for sharing. Great upholstery too.
That is a beautiful fabric you chose...who makes it? Most excellent!!
Smashing job on the chair and thank you so much for the look around Hautefort, beautiful! 💜🌻
Very, very nice. Something tells me you girls went home and noted all the plants and ideas from Hautefort. Those white flowers will spread so just take them out, cut in half, replant and over time you'll have a beautiful drift, or featured areas. Thanks for 'cushion making in one minute' because we are able to rewind as many times as we need 'til we get it.
Forceps! Never thought of that. You are so smart and talented! The fabric you chose is beautiful!
🏰❤
🤗💖
Beautiful chateau and gardens. Thank you for taking us on this trip. Your chair is perfect your work is outstanding.
Just love love the chair and what work goes into it stunning and fabulous fabric did a great job !
Thank you for sharing the tour of the castle / chateau what wonderful furnishings I could just move in but the gardens and hedgings are something else !
Thanks for the tour of Hautefort. It’s lovely. I echo the comment about Everafter - I loved it as well.
i love your commentary given in joy and knowledge..... canada rocks in France
Always such a pleasure to spend time with you as you share your beautiful life in France. Thank you for this channel!
