    This idiot decided that because I wasn't cycling in the cycle lane, that he'd drive into me and push me into it. The side of his vehicle made contact with my right handlebar, and the only reason I stayed on my bike was that I was travelling at the same speed at the time. Whether he knew he'd hit me or not is debatable, but he certainly knew I was there - especially after I banged on the side of his car.
    As for why I wasn't in the cycle lane - it's a filter lane for the ASL, not a cycle lane, and there's two vans parked in it at the start, and there's often vans parked in it further along at the lights. It's a red light, so neither of us is going to go anywhere, and there's only a couple of cars at the lights - no reason for me to filter past to the ASL. When the lights change, I'm going straight on - I don't want to get trapped in the left of the lane.
    This was reported to the police (Hence the long delay until the upload), but they were unable to do anything apart from have words with the driver, because this "isn't driving that falls below the standard expected". Wonderful.

    Too bad the videos can't be sent to the drivers insurance companies.
    Insurance companies want to minimize their loss by charging bad drivers higher rates, according to their higher risk.
    Increased insurance rates, better than tickets, the gift that keeps on giving, year after year, for several years.

      This is how I think safety has to go on our roads. Spending on proper enforcement, however desirable, isn't going to realistically happen. Instead, the government has to engage with insurance companies to put the onus on them to take the lead.
      First, a clause in insurance contracts, which I think already exists in some, that obliges drivers not to drive in a manner that unnecessarily increases the risk they pose.
      Secondly, a system linked to the MIB insurance database for anyone to submit dashcam evidence against a registration number and the evidence going to the correct insurer to be reviewed. The government would have to somehow persuade the insurance companies to review all footage and come up with a system whereby drivers could have a 3 strikes then the policy is cancelled, strikes being forwarded between policies like no claims bonus. Having a policy cancelled is a huge thing, you have to declare in all future insurance quotes, but even strikes would up a premium.
      This might result in more people trying to drive without insurance, so government should also look at more cost effective ways to catch this. Perhaps ANPR on petrol forecourts linked to the MIB database so fuel cannot be directly sold to a car not on the insurance database. Watching documentaries on traffic police, a lot of bilkings seem to be commited by drivers also commiting document offences so this might reduce fuel theft too.

      I'm guessing you mean that I should have either moved to the left, or slowed down to let him in - and you're right, I was being deliberately stubborn here. I avoid using this bike lane when there's not much traffic (2 cars in front), so I don't just block them when the lights change. But I could have slowed down, certainly. Although I don't feel that I should do (apart from for my own safety) just because he was too impatient to go behind me.

      Highway code advice; do not allow yourself to become agitated or involved if someone is behaving badly on the road. This will only make the situation worse. Pull over, calm down and, when you feel relaxed, continue your journey.

      @TheMirrorGuy 6 років тому +6

      Highway code advice; . The rules in The Highway Code do not give you the right of way in any circumstance, but they advise you when you should give way to others. Always give way if it can help to avoid an incident
      Knocking on a car is not avoiding an incident or staying calm as it could escalate a situation.
      Stay safe

    • @FuckOffYoutubeHandles
      @FuckOffYoutubeHandles  6 років тому +4

      They don't give right of way in any circumstance - here I was travelling in a straight line in the lane, while the private hire car driver overtook me and then started to force his way in.
      Perhaps, though I'm just the sort of person who would prefer to knock on the car and let the driver know how close they are, rather than just stay completely silent about the whole thing. I'm not saying that I'm looking for a fight or anything, but I feel that pointing out people's mistakes gives them a chance to improve. If the driver just continues to drive like this, he's going to end up causing an accident eventually.
      I agree that I could have given way and let him in, and then had a polite conversation with him while we were both stopped, but at the time I was thinking "What on earth is this guy doing?" rather than "I'll let him in and then ask him to please not do that in future".

    I bet there will be someone justifying his action by saying you were in his blind spot... Blind spot is just an excuse for lazy drivers to not look properly and no, there is no blindspot in front of a passenger car like that. The car was already signalling when it came into the frame, the driver knew he was there.

    • @k-rj740
      @k-rj740 6 років тому +3

      Also, the driver was coming up from behind the cyclist, so he must have seen the cyclist. One thing is if a cyclist catch up to a driver and that driver start to indicate and change lanes, but do not bother checking his mirrors before doing the manoeuvre. Here, though, we have a driver who catches up to a cyclist, having the cyclist in front of him, indicate while passing him, and then proceed to cut him off when changing lanes, running him out of the lane like that. Utterly poor driving, made even worse when it is done deliberately.

    • @FuckOffYoutubeHandles
      @FuckOffYoutubeHandles  6 років тому +9

      No, the cycle lane is optional. The reason I don't go into it after the van is that there's only two cars in front of me, so I was planning to just sit behind them. If I use the cycle lane (as I was forced to), then I end up being forced into the bike box, and I end up in front of the two cars when the lights change, and just hold them up (I'm going straight on at the lights, not left).
      There's also regularly cars parked on the left after that junction, which means I'd need to be quite far out until I pass them, so any cars behind me need to wait a few seconds before they can pass - a lot of drivers aren't patient enough for that, and will try to squeeze past, or start honking at me. In any case, there's no compelling reason for me to effectively queue jump just because I can.

    • @k-rj740
      @k-rj740 6 років тому +7

      Not only is it optional, but it isn't even a cycle lane, it is a feeder lane leading up the Advanced Stop Line. Cyclists are only supposed to use it (if they want to of course) when the traffic is high with lots of queuing stationary cars waiting on a red light, so that they can reach the Advanced Stop Line in front of the traffic.

      I don't use the (optional!) cycle lane here because there's two vans parked in it, and then there's only 2 cars up ahead. If I use the cycle lane, I have no choice but to filter to the front of the two cars and then get in their way when the lights change (as I was forced to do, I'm going straight on here) and I also have to hope that the car in the front hasn't driven into the ASL (As they have done here, partially).

    • @KarstenMoerman
      @KarstenMoerman 6 років тому +4

      I see the vans, you could have used the lane after. the bit that's really unacceptable is that he was trying to change lanes at the vans.. don't get me wrong here.. that driver was definitely wrong.. I dont understand what the problem is with filtering to the front of the two cars at the light either.. you wouldn't be in their way.. you are supposed to be there.. certainly if you were in front of my car at the lights I wouldn't consider you in my way and I would happily chug along at 10mph if needed to give you the appropriate space you need on the road.. (but then i'm dutch and i see no difference between a car or bike on the road).

    • @FuckOffYoutubeHandles
      @FuckOffYoutubeHandles  6 років тому +2

      The point in the ASL is for cyclists who are filtering to be able to get in front of vehicles, instead of having to cycle alongside them when the lights change - they're not for cyclists to automatically go to the front of the queue. I've had plenty of drivers who have obviously taken exception to me using the ASL, and have passed me way too close and fast when the lights change.
      Advice varies, but many more experienced cyclists (I'm not that experienced, I've only been cycling for about 3 years now) agree that when there's a short queue of cars, it's better to hang back and join the queue as you would in a car, rather than go to the ASL just because it's there.
      I'm glad that you'd be happy to wait, unfortunately many drivers in Edinburgh aren't as considerate, and see cyclists as an annoying obstacle that they need to get past as quickly as possible (Which is probably why the private hire car driver wanted in front of me instead of just staying behind). :)

    • @KarstenMoerman
      @KarstenMoerman 6 років тому +2

      Well hopefully more drivers will adopt the dutch attitude to cyclists in the future.. until then stay safe!

    • @k-rj740
      @k-rj740 6 років тому +4

      Karsten Moerman: That lane is an ASL feeder lane for cyclists and not an ordinary cycle lane. Feeder lanes are short stretches of lanes that are there so that cyclists may pass stationary or queuing traffic to reach the Advanced Stop Lines when the queuing traffic wait at a red light.
      Also, most cyclists out there have absolutely no interest to deliberately hold up anyone by not using a cycle lane. They are however having an interest in staying safe on a bicycle, and as cycle lanes are alternative lanes that could and should make their journey safer, they should only be used if each cyclist believes that being so. Unfortunately, in the UK, many cycle lanes are useless and often downright dangerous to use, cycle lanes such as narrow cycle lanes that are even more narrow than the width on a bicycle handlebar, or a narrow cycle lane placed beside a parking zone.
      There are many reasons why a cyclist would sometimes (or often, depending on where you cycle) avoid them*, and it should only be up to each cyclist to be the decider when and when not to (Like Rule 63 show), and not to some random impatient driver who can't manage to drive behind a cyclist for a few seconds of time.

      That relies on there not being a car in the bike box, which is far from certain (In this video there's one half in the box), and there's only 2 cars in front of me anyway - no reason to queue jump just to sit in front of them, and probably annoy the drivers.

      Edinburgh Cycle Cam So you're worried about annoying the car driver by USING the bike box, but not worried about annoying other drivers by NOT using the bike lane.
      If a car is half way in bike box, sit in front of them, if it's full way in, in front of them or alongside.
      I think I've commented on your videos before, but it really does seem as if you're looking for altercations. I think you would enjoy cycling more if you stopped looking for trouble.

    • @FuckOffYoutubeHandles
      @FuckOffYoutubeHandles  6 років тому +4

      I'm worried about annoying drivers by "queue jumping" as many see it (and I've been told as such). I never use a bike box if there's only one or two cars in front of me, since in my experience, filtering to the front often causes drivers to be desperate to overtake as soon as possible, resulting in close passes.
      I rarely use bike lanes like this in general - a few inches of paint on the road offers no protection, other vehicles regularly park in them (as demonstrated in this video), drivers frequently drive in them, and when using them to filter, traffic turning can't easily see you - there's even a road end just before the lights here.
      I don't look for altercations per-se, but I am pretty stubborn / belligerent, and refuse to be bullied off the road like this. If I was looking for an altercation, I would have stopped and gone back to talk to the driver (maybe I should have done anyway) - here I was just trying to stand my ground while this driver tried to push me out of my lane.

Why was the cyclist not in the cycle lane? Could it be do you suppose (and I am spoon feeding you here because you are prone to miss the point) because the vans stopped him entering it and just as he passed them the "reckless" (NB spelling!) private hire driver was already cutting across in front of him intending to cause him serious harm.
