Mythbusters did an episode on sugar in the gas tank. It's a myth that it ruins your engine. The fuel filter will clog before any of the sugar makes it into the engine. Scotty is right though, tow it to a repair shop to drain the gas tank. If you drive it there, you run the risk of having your car stall on the road because gasoline can't get through a clogged fuel filter.
Yes that is true. That's because sugar does not dissolve in Petrol so it stays as these big clumps that get caught by the filter. You don't have to tow it, just empty and clean the fuel tank and change the fuel filter in the fuel pump.
If the sugar is liquid, it will pass on right through to the combustion chamber and congeal around your intake valves, so the next morning, after the engine has cooled, when you crank your engine the intake valves will bend because they are stuck by the glucose, and the piston will hit them and bend them. Time for a major engine service at that time. Do not shut your engine off and allow it to cool down if you suspect sugar. Get it cleaned by a shop before cooling..
Mythbusters is a corporate propaganda outlet. It’s as reliable as Wikipedia, which is predominantly controlled by the CIA. The same group who have installed puppet editors in every MSM outlet. Mythbusters is propagandist hogwash.
Sugar does not dissolve in gasoline, so if you catch it before you try to drive it you can flush it with water which will dissolve it, drop the tank and flush it with warm or even hot water to dissolve the sugar and then rinse it out real good.
The 3.6R Subarus have very few engine issues. At least in my experience. 200,000+ miles and only goes through a half quart every 3500 miles between oil changes, and evryone I know who owns a 3.6R has never had major engine issues. Head gaskets were an issue on the 2.5L engines though 2010. From 2011 and up. The 2.0L turbos in the newer ones seem to have issues as do the infotainment touch screens.
Totally agree with you I have a 13 legacy with a 3.6 I’m at 130,000 I think runs like a clock I stay on top of all the maintenance though oil changes every 5k coolant changes every 2 to 3 years (Subaru claims you can go 12 years or 120 ) in the owners manual but I change the coolant in six years so basically half of what they recommended, i’ve been running 5-30 mobil 1 Full synthetic from day one at 3000k , Hardly burns oil I noticed if you clean The PCV valve every 3 to 4 oil change that helps with oil consumption. I’ve also been running mobile one full synthetic gear oil in the front and rear diffs.
Had a 92 2wd legacy. Head gasket did blow at some time. Into the cooling system. Kept the cap loose and still made it to 315,000. Just remember to top off the anti freeze from time to time. It locked up. But still ran after it cooled.
Sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline, it'll just clog your filter. But otherwise you have to clean out the tank (or buy a new one) and maybe buy a new filter.
I think the sugar turns to carbon when burned and leaves carbon deposits on things. Carbon heats to higher temps and creates uneven hotspots that damages equipment.
@@tomb8564 i don't disagree with that, but it simply doesn't dissolve in gasoline and doesn't pass through fuel filters. So whatever it can do in engines is irrelevant.
Scotty, You said in another video to check your engine oil cold. My 2021 RAV4 owners manual says warm engine before checking and allow to drain for 5-minutes. My 2019 Harley M14 engine manual says check hot. My 2022 Triumph R3 manual says check cold after running for 60-90 seconds and allow to drain for 3-minutes. They’re all different; check your manual before you overfill or under fill.
@Barack Blows it’s something you have to do for a lot of new cars, but I don’t have to do it for my 06 Toyota Matrix. Is this “check your oil cold”, or “check it warm”, going to become the next big automotive arguement? I think so. Just like the arguement to put the best tires on the rear, when you’re supposed to put the best on the front.
I work on buses and our old MCIs with the Series 60s and the old Detroit 2 cycles take straight 30 weight motor oil for P\S fluid. I didn't believe it when I first started but it's true.
I did an experiment one time and I took two cups of sugar poured it into a gallon of gas and to my surprise the sugar did not melt it stayed in a crystalline form.. the information you gave is correct don't start it just wash the tank out with warm soapy water and flush the lines. if you do start it.. then you'll have to take the fuel injectors out and the fuel rail and clean them as well so I did so for a customer and there was no problem to their engine

Some jerk dumped sugar into my tank when I was in college. Expensive fix. D bag definitely knew what he was doing. Still don’t know who it was over 20 years later.
Recently did a head gasket on an 09 cherokee, took way longer than I'd like to admit. Thought I had taken the oil and put some new in and got an oil pressure light. Thought it was low pressure from the amount of dust and crap in the engine. Either way first troubleshooting step is chance the oil. When I dumped the oil pan into my bucket to take to the disposal place it filled it up about half way. Glad it runs still. oops
Anything electronic that has been immersed in water can SOMETIMES be saved by getting a plastic bag with a fair measure of plain, uncooked rice and putting the device in that. Seal the bag and leave for 24/48 hrs and fingers crossed, it will be fine. It has worked for me on a couple of mobile/cell phones.

I know of several people who back in the day had sugar put in their gas tank. Nothing happened. Even after some of the cars were ran for several weeks. When we took the tank off of one of the cars the sugar was laying in the bottom of the tank. It did not mix with the gas. We washed out the tank and simply put in a new fuel filter. How ever karo syrup in the oil is a completely different story.
I was able to save my car computer after a flood. open the ECM box, and if its wet inside, rinse it in a lot of distilled water, a flowing rinse, about a gallon's worth. pure distilled water will remove any conductive contaminants or solutes that cause internal shorts. Right after the distilled water bath, Use an entire can of electronics cleaner to drive out the remaining distilled water and help dry and protect the electronics from further corrossion. Dry it properly after that. I waited 48 hours exposed to an electric fan the whole time to dry it out.
I have often heard about people getting sugar dumped into their fuel tanks and finding out after they messed up their engines. So here’s a dummy question, how would someone(emailing Scotty) know before they messed up their motor know that they had sugar in the gas tank???
Scotty FYI Subaru does not produce the six cylinder anymore, my 2013 Legacy with a six cylinder has been very dependable I’m at 130,000 right now, it’s like anything you stay on top of the maintenance engine oil changes fluids they will run and run! They’re actually more reliable than the four-cylinder variance, I never had any head gasket issues vs the EJ and other variance of the four-cylinder! Actually I would actually admit they have more wheel bearing issues than anything now !
Flooded cars-clean all the fish out too & other buddies that may have moved in. Completely STRIP that car out You must clean & sanitize each & every part before reassembly-(health reasons). The best thing for flood cars is the CRUSHER.
You are a fun guy to listen to and are usually if anything, some what right . But! I worked at many dealers as a mechanic and body man, and buying a hood car now days is a crap shoot. I used to see people come in with pages of problems with their cars still under warranty. Then, some people with the same cars never have anything go wrong wrong and rave about the car.? I had my first foreign car 35 years ago a Honda Accord. 7 years never saw the dealer for anything other than a muffler. Your hit on the electric cars is great. They are overpriced, under engendered and rushed to production.
I heard that sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline so it seems it wouldn't be a big problem. But the tank should be dropped and thoroughly cleaned out anyway. Might as well replace the fuel pump whether or not it's bad because dropping a gas tank can be a real challenge especially a full tank. Plus replace the fuel filter. Installing a locking gas cap seems to be in order but those can be problematic also.
Back in the late 70's the state had emissions inspection. They would stie people for having a weep hole in the exhaust out put side of the muffler, claiming a leaky system. It was abuse and it cost the state their inspection system.
Sugar is ok to get back at someone but what’s better is a mix of kerosine (2-5 gallons) and Karo syrup (4-6 12oz bottles)… do the syrup first so that the kerosine cleans the fill tube of its sugary goodness and leaves a smell of fuel. This makes it more likely that they will attempt starting their car and be none the wiser. Please only do this if the person truly deserves it.

Scotty when I was in college someone put sugar & molasses in my oil crankcase in my 1966 VW which didn’t have a lock on the rear bonnet. I drove home and about 100 miles the whole engine was destroyed. This was in 1969😩Never found out who did it as it happened on campus in a dorm parking lot.

Hey so my car got sugar and water put in the gas tank and for some reason my car won't do more than 25 mph I guess it's in limp mode what do I do to make it work again
Did that person also invite you to hustle a few bowling games at an undisclosed alley? I also thought you could almost rebuild an entire car for $2k in the 70s let alone an engine rebuild.
Gasolene will not dissolve sugar, so the sugar crystals will just go to the bottom of the tank. The only thing you would have to do is pull the tank and clean it out.
So, from personal experience "YES" powdered sugar in the fuel system can cause engine failure. In my case it made it up to the injectors causing the #8 injector to stick open washing the cylinder wall taking out the rings and causing the intake valve to bang a hole in the top of the piston. So urban legend, fact, I think it's a little of both and definitely case by case......
my honda accord is being wierd. one day it just started driving wierd. when i press on the gas it accelerates but when i press on it more it stays the same and if i wanna go faster i have to press the gas all the way down
I have a 2012 jeep wrangler dash warning lights periodically (most of them) no check engine light. And no code. Along with the dash lights my high beams (had lights don't have to be on) come on, and my whipers do a few rounds. I can't recreate it it seems entirely random, dry weather, wet weather, cold, warm, bumps aren't what set it off. Sometimes it happens five times in a singe trip, and sometimes I go a week without it happening once. Help!
someone did that to my beautiful Datsun 710 n 1975... my dad took the gas tank off and had it drained and flushed but it never ran right afterwards and I had to change the gas line filter every 500 miles.... pooh on the person that did this!!!
Would a car’s ac compressor not turn on after an ac hose leaks? im not sure which one leaked, since it happened to my dads car a while ago, but after fixing the hose it no longer turns on. He didnt use a vacuum either.
hehe yes the waste oil can be used to make fuel like diesel fuel on a diesel engine not a gasoline engine, I have seen one of these vehicles years back and it had allot of smoke pouring out of the exhaust, I was surprised that the one shown on here a few weeks back wasnt the same with the smoke, mind you the one I seen was back in he mid-1980s maybe early 1990s I am noit sure if tha tis when the idea first came out but iut was the first time I heard of it then seen it .
Gasoline does not disolve sugar. The only thing that can happen is the filter screen gets blocket. If you want to mess with your neighboors car a plastic bag in the tank works better.
Okay, I have a separate question; Years ago, I had a 1985 Chevrolet Caprice Classic with the 4.3 EFI 6-cylinder engine, that I later sold to a kid who wanted to use it for a demolition derby car. One notable problem with it was that the front seat was stuck all the way back and it couldn't be adjusted anymore. This wasn't an issue for me because I'm 5'11 1/2," and I had no problem reaching the pedals or seeing over the dashboard, etcetera, but in the event that some of my shorter family members needed to drive it, they would've had some problems. So my question is, what's the minimum height requirement for driving such a car with the front seat all the way back?
That really depends. You can't define an answer for that. In my mom's crv, I put the seat all the way back, but in someone's elantra, it wasn't all the way back. So for different cars it depends.
I heard of someone putting a straight 6 from a Lexus SC300 into a El Camino and then putting twin turbos on it because theres lots of room with an inline 6 . Weird but lots of power .
What do you mean "if you got sugar in your gas tank"? How would you know not to drive it unless the person who did it told you? People that do things like that are not going to tell you. What are the signs the car shows if you continue driving it because you didn't know?

Time for a major engine service at that time. Do not shut your engine off and allow it to cool down if you suspect sugar. Get it cleaned by a shop before cooling..

Put salt and vinegar in the tank and say bye-bye to the engine due to corrosion.

I heard that sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline so it seems it wouldn't be a big problem. But the tank should be dropped and thoroughly cleaned out anyway. Might as well replace the fuel pump whether or not it's bad because dropping a gas tank can be a real challenge especially a full tank. Plus replace the fuel filter. Installing a locking gas cap seems to be in order but those can be problematic also.

Sugar won’t dissolve in Gasoline. It should all be caught at the filter and will clog the filter.
hehe yes the waste oil can be used to make fuel like diesel fuel on a diesel engine not a gasoline engine, I have seen one of these vehicles years back and it had allot of smoke pouring out of the exhaust, I was surprised that the one shown on here a few weeks back wasnt the same with the smoke, mind you the one I seen was back in he mid-1980s maybe early 1990s I am noit sure if tha tis when the idea first came out but iut was the first time I heard of it then seen it .
