It's time for our first ever non-Japanese engine on Iconic engines, and we are starting with something pretty special, the engine that is likely BMW's best ever 4 cylinder. The legendary S14 four cylinder engine that powered the BMW E30 M3.
The BMW S14 engine is actually a Frankenstein engine, this being the case not because BMW was cutting costs, but because one of the greatest engine designers of all time, Mr. Paul Rosche had already designed so many great engines for BMW that there was no reason to work from scratch. The goal of the S14 was to turn the BMW E30 into a DTM champion. Initial plants to shove a straight six into an E30 M3 were abandoned in favor of a lighter four cylinder that could rev higher. A lighter engine meant lower weight and better weight distribution and balance which can be a lot more important than outright power in racing and motor sport.
So the BMW s14 engine got an M10 engine block, an M88 cylinder head (with two combustion chambers amputated) and some sexy ITBs. The S14 and BMW e30 M3 combo were so good that the BMW e30 m3 became the most successful touring car of all time. When it comes to touring car championships and Group A racing the BMW e30 m3 won pretty much everything.
When it comes to the specs the S14 engine has 93.4 mm of bore and 84 mm of stroke. This gives us an over-square engine design which makes sense because the BMW S14 was designed to spend most of it's time in the high rev range. However, the basic 2.3 liter version, S14B23 wasn't the only available displacement for the S14. Italian and Portuguese markets got a 2.0 liter version which was created by reducing the stroke, while Europe got the 2.5 liter EVO 3 engine at the end of the BMW e30 m3 production run. On top of the cast iron M10 engine block we can find a aluminum alloy cylinder head with dual over head camshafts (DOHC) and a bucket and shim on top of a bucket pushing onto the valves. The camshafts are chain driven and the chain is a good dual row design which doesn't cause any issues. The same can't be said about the S14 chain tensioners, BMW used several different versions and some caused problems with chain stretch and wear. This is why many S14 owners choose to upgrade to the S50 or S52 chain tensioner. The camshafts have 240 degrees of duration and a very impressive 10 mm of lift on both the intake and the exhaust. The power output of the BMW s14 ranged from 189 hp to 235hp for the EVO 3 engine. The US market received only the 192 2.3 liter S14 engine which made 192 hp and had a catalytic converter.
When it comes to tuning the bmw s14 engine really is a racing engine adapted to use in normal traffic. As such it's incredibly fun to drive hard even if you don't tune it. You have to understand that this engine needs to be driven hard to be enjoyed, it makes all of it's performance in the top 1000 - 2000 rpms, so if you think it's slow or doesn't have any torque you really are missing the point. How to get more power? For mild tuning you won't be touching the intake or the exhaust manifold because you really won't gain anything there. Some mild camshafts will can get some gains, most will be gained by replacing the stock Bosch motronic ecu with a modern standalone ecu, if you know what you're doing with the fuel and ignition maps you can get some horses and also an aftermarket ecu will allow you to get rid of the stock flap style air flow meter which hampers performance. What about big NA power on the S14? Sure, just do what BMW did in the DTM. This will make you broke but you will have a road illegal engine that's massive fun. Wild cams, throttle slides instead of plates, crazy 4 into 1 headers, porting the intakes, increased displacement, increased compression, dry sump, and you can expect 350 hp. What about a turbo s14? Sure it can be done but be ready that the car will loose massive value. An alternative is to swap something into your e30 m3, get big power out of your system, conserve the s14 and then swap it back when you get bored of the s50 or whatever else you swapped in there. Supercharged S14? Yeah you can do that too, but good luck finding the parts.
Rap translation:
I have an awesome cylinder head
What are you waiting for, press the start button
I'm the fastest engine on the Hockenheim
I'm so fast there
Nobody can overtake me
My name is the BMW S14
and I'm the greatest engine you will ever see.
It all rhymes in German....I swear.

you should do the M50 family of engines too. M50/52,S50/52
m50 is life

The M50 family is peak BMW
Up😁😁😁
M54 and s54 are great 2 haahha

Whoa, that really looks like an e30! Pretty cool.

This is gonna make your channel, just wait till the algorithm picks it up. You never know, you could end up getting a job on donut media and move the series over, with the ability to physically show us the engines and the cars they were in. Keep up the fantastic work, your truly class leading with this series.
Basically bumper to bumper lol
I apologize in advance. You’re
That's a great compliment. 😊
I would enjoy his antics with James. 😂🎉😂
"Turbos in toasters", I just laughed and laughed at that line. I've secretly always wanted to put a turbo on a lawnmower engine.
I need help...
But I think I'm in good company.
Love your vids!!!
It's a bit hard to make it work because the engine is too small and you just can't find a small enough turbo to make it work. Nitro on the other hand....
You are a cool dude. Flippin AEM even thought "hey this guy is so cool we're going to sponsor him". Like bro AEM is the best, I run nothing but AEM
They really make top notch stuff, and I'm honestly not saying this because they sponsored this series. I have their wideband in my AW11 for more than a year now, and it's been nothing but good to me.
They also sponsor many different makes and model project cars and teams
This series is impressively informative, keep it coming 👍
Quick anecdote from an engine book I've got. From an interview of a BMW F1 race team engine builder, they would go out to wrecking yards to find old clapped out sedans with the highest mileage they could find and pull the M10 blocks for cores. The thinking was that these engines with tons and tons of hours on the clock would have all the casting stresses out of them and would hold up to grenade-spec boost the best.
Seeing as these cars were laying down 900 to 1500 horsepower with factory stock iron blocks and NOT blowing up they might have been on to something.
That’s super interesting thanks for sharing!
What engine book if you don't mind me asking?
@@deltas4764 Its just called "Legendary Car Engines" by John Simister. Printed by Motorbooks.
Tons and tons of photos of engines in various stags of assembly and lots of interviews with restorers and historians.
Picked it up years and years ago. Highly doubt its in print. Makes a fantastic coffee table book.
@@deltas4764 amazon has it for like $9.00 U.S. and up.
So they took junkyard engines und turned them into rocket engines with 1200-1400 hp and 5 bars of boost?
I have always said the thing that turns me on most about 80's and 90's cars is homologation, cars that were designed with racing in mind and offered to the public, I mean as a born petrolhead what more could you possibly ask for?
I see a new Iconic Engines video. I click like.
Please do the BMW m50-m54 family of motors! Right meow! On a side note your channel is a huge breathe of fresh air compared to most of the garbage on youtube. Thanks Boss
Very sad we didn't get this M3 in South Africa. We had to create our own homologation special, the 325is, with the Alpina 2.7 M20 engine. This was to compete against the South Africa only Opel Kadett Superboss with the Delta modified C20XE, stock with Getrag LSD gearbox amongst other thing.
Also interesting is that South Africa also made a 333i with the M30 engine also helped build by Alpina. We also made the Opel Kadett 200ts with a C20LET and 6 sped LSD Getrag which debuted with 160kw (215hp) in 1994.
Absolutely BEST sports car I ever owned. I loved my E30 M-3. I put 100,000 miles on it after I bought it at 75,000 miles.
9:40 that’s my car bro S14B25 😂
The best thing was in the DTM they did make up to 380-390HP in qualification trim on normal Pump Gas.
No Race Gas was allowed
My dream build would be a 1974 BMW with a S14B23 tuned to around 300HP
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
There were no S14's making that power, the most powerful S14's NA max out well below 350HP, around 320 or so.
@@Mantenner thats bullshit. "By 1990 the engine capacity was rasied to 2.5-liters and a larger version of the S14 was prepared that could produce 340 bhp." And in modern time, i bet you could get a punch more. AND with short google run i found few 360hp s14:s
@@TopiAS06 Depends on whether you count race engines that have all upgraded internals and need to be rebuilt every few hundred miles.
A stock S14 might produce 360hp, at around 10000rpm...for a few seconds, then you get a hole in the block.
@@BigUriel so if race engines don't count then 2jz making 1000hp don't count, or the claim that 4 banger Honda motors making 1000hp+ don't count either....... Those are race engines as well.......
@@Mantenner that's public data man..... Bmw factory and Schitnzer themselves have made those claims.....
I'm going to share all of this new information with all my car friends. I'm officially a little smarter about cars.
Reminds me of what people think of the s2000 when they first drive it under 6k rpm
I love these videos and how in depth you get. I appreciate the extensive research that you must do to bring this to us. Keep em comming! And thank you.
Great vid, I have a 2.3 and a 2.5. My fav engine. It loves life at the edge! Long live the E30 M3!
hi mate...i think its a good idea to post a video on Paul Rosche, the High Priest of BMW Engines... alias camshaft Paul . He regretted not being able to add a turbo to the S14 but the race regulations had to be followed. That would have made the E30 M3 an even more powerful sacred beast
To be fair the BMW M1 was the first M car that started this lineage. Though arguably the 3.0 CSL was the first M car, despite not having an m badge. Then the M535i, the M 635 CSI, the M5, and then finally the e30 m3. Though iirc there was a updated m535i somewhere in there. Interesting also to see how much they experimented with M placement and the spacing before and after the numbers and letters
No, I meant the M3 lineage, not the whole M thing obviously.
driving 4 answers ah my mistake, it wasn’t obvious to me, but I’m just waking up.
Hey, your german sounds very good ❣️👌🏼
Love greeting from Berlin 😋
Having driven a tuned s14 (I admit I didn't go over 7000rpm, I am to afraid of breaking something), I wouldn't want to own one. The car is amazing, but there is no point in having one if you don't rev it to moon, which with an engine worth 3 years of rent I wouldn't want to do to often. On top of that, the s14 is 3 times as much as an s54, imagine how much more fun you would have with an s54, knowing you have 2 more ready to drop in when you throw a rod!
As a German I am actually impressed by your language skills... It actually was near flawless....
Bi, or multilingual. Sadly, many Europeans speak English better than many Americans.
@@frankmiller95 And some English people ....sadly
Very comprehensive video, thanks for doing this great work. Please consider doing the VQ37VHR
You can remove the flap MAF with a heated wire MAF. There is a product called a "MAF translator" which interprets data from a new heated wire sensor, then sends data to the ECU that is exactly like the flap MAF. Some call the OEM sensor a "VAF." It is good for a few horsepower by itself. I think some people mod their Datsun 280ZXT to accept a 300ZXT heated wire MAF for example.
23:14 There is another way. Have you heard of offset grinding? By grinding the crank throws off center and then welding them up, you can lengthen the stroke by a few millimeters.
29:00 Plus, with 10:5:1 or more of compression, you couldn't run much boost anyway. It would probably be required to buy lower compression pistons.
My S14 is being rebuilt right now. Its looking awesome.. Gonna do a youtube post once its done..
I absolutely love driving the M3. What he said about it was totally true. Anything below 4000rpm doesn’t count in the E30 M3.
Above 4000, its heaven.
I Love your Iconic Engine Series! Yes please make a Paul Rosche Video. And BTW your German is pretty good. Greetings from Hockenheim Germany
I grew up watching Pokemon on RTL2, that's how I picked up most of my German... aaah good times. Wow, Hockenheim, not many cooler places where you could live. Guess this video is right up your alley :)
@@d4a oh yes good old RTL2 times. the Kickers was awesome aswell. Yes its pretty cool you can make drift trainings or rimeattack driving in Hockenheim but Nordschleife is not far aswell. I drive a z3 coupe with the M52B28TU as a daily a d have a S13 200sx with the CA18DET Engine. A awesome Engine BTW called little RB. Cast Iron Block and Oil cooled Pistons by Oil spray from the Bottom. It was to expensive and replaced by the SR20det.
Great video. We still occasionally see E30 M3 track cars come through the shop with built 2.5 liter Evo engines and aftermarket engine management (to eliminate that horrible airflow meter from the stock setup) and they easily produce 275+ whp using race gas on the chassis dyno. That's incredibly impressive for an engine design whose genesis was nearly 40 years ago. Fully agree with naming this engine one of the all time greats.
people who thinks this car is slow, the wanna drive like 400hp+v8, turbo car, or dont know how to drive it. its a car that needs to be high revd and keep the momentum up
I owned an E30 M3. I can confirm, anyone who thinks they would love to drive one will be very disappointed. I never took it on the track so can't comment on that.
When I was 16 (2004) I opted to get a 2000 dollar 87 325is and instead of a 8500 dollar 88 or 89 m3 🤣 all because i didn't wanna borrow 1500 from my dad to get it. I would of probably fuked it up though. Idk though cause I still have my e30 sitting at my dads house. I'll never know
This channel's content is wayyyy better and more in depth than most youtube channels about learning the history of cars. Fucking Donut Media sounds like they read off of Wikipedia with very limited fundamental knowledge about the topic.
Keep killing it with the knowledge!
The people that complain about these things being too slow and not fun are the same people that complain about the S2000 being slow.
You take something tuned 100% for the high end and drive it like a tractor and it's going to be slow. If you don't hit limiter at least sometimes you aren't going hard enough.
The S14 I forgot to adk for, only had the M42 engine in a E30, was fun to drive even with low power, the engine liked the revs and the gearbox was great.
So I want to ask, please bring a video of the M42/M44 maybe compare and as always wanted to see the Ford Duratec, the 1.7 Zetec S and the OHC Pinto ✌
Nice video
PS: Your german is really ok 👍
The M42, Race Engine was the S42
M42 stroker builds
Crankshaft from m44(1.9l) or m47 a little more involved process and this link will show some of the similarities in other parts

More mods for lightening up the m42
grassrootsmotorsports.com/project-cars/1991-bmw-318is/project-bmw-318is-lightening-engine/
M42 is a wonderful engine, currently building a turbo m42 for my e30 with around 300hp on all stock internals. There's plenty of mods for these motors and they have a ton of untapped potential from my own findings and many others.
the 635csi still got the m30(b35) engine - only the M635 got the M88 of all e24's
The early 633 got the rare M90 which is M88 block and internAls with M30 head and a sick intake manifold. My fav non M BMW engine.
Just throwing it out there again, VW G40/60, or the VW AFH not the best nor most iconic but imo often overlooked, a neat 1.4/1.6 16v that can do pretty much 4AGE things :)
I have only had BMW E34 M5 3.8 with S38B38 engine. Stock power 340 hp and 400 nm torque naturally aspirated. It’s similar type motor as S14 just six cylinder inline with larger 50 mm ITB’s and larger valves and 90 mm stroke. It would be great if you could do a video of M88 / S38 type engines. M1 race cars had naturally aspirated six cylinder 3.5 liter motor versions with around 470-490 hp power output at very high rpm for inline six at that time.
All I can think now is how many times someone mentioned an S14 and I thought they meant Silvia/Skyline
I've got two e30's one has a m52b28tu and the other has a Euro m3 engine turbo
Did you swap it yourself? I’m currently swapping an M52TUB25 into my E30 estate! I’d love to pick your brain about the build
Thumbs up for a S54B32 video :)
I would love the see the HONDA H22 / H22a4 / h22a7!!! it's a forgot engine specially in the Honda scene. I got an a4 in my prelude and I get tons of guys with K and B telling me to swap it but nah I love my H.
I own an E30 M3 with its original S14 engine. Be careful with these, costs to rebuild one properly ranges from $15,000 to $30,000. The guy who had mine had it rebuilt at 65,000 miles and receipts showing more than $20,000. Doing the 2.3 the 2.5 is not recommended and it takes someone who really knows what they are doing to do it right.
Dang that's pricey 👀
A Turbo on an s14 its a shame. This engine lifes from high rev an the Sound he made at it
The s14 also powered the 320is. With lower displacement 2L instead of 2.3 or 2.5 like the m3's
D4A is undercover German😂
One does not simply homologate a straight-6.
Nice work my man!
The video we all wanted and needed! And by “all” I mean the people who desperately want the e30 m3 but probably never be able to afford…😅 me😂
I think the list of people who are unable to afford them nowadays includes almost everyone 😁 they're crazy expensive now.
I’ve worked on a few and driven several. I used to work as a mechanic at my uncles shop in Los Angeles. Never beat up the car just test drove after repairs were maid. I ended up purchasing 90 BMW 325 because of it. Completely rebuild the whole thing, sold it for cheap to a youth pastor that really wanted it. He then loaned it to a member from church and crash it 🤦🏻♂️. I wish I never sold it.
Dem pastors... Never hand them sporty beemers 🤣
I had 2 BMW'S in my 20's
My car the 1982 323i 6 Cylinder with big cam (Import to AUSTRALIA) This was the best car to drive fast in the 90 it would eat v8's for breakfast, lunch and tea!!
I love that car
My partner's car was the 1983 320i I was told had was the s14 motor
Awesome video love watching Your content
I think nos for a last stage tune is goiing to be health safety
I want to see someone swap a bmw s14 into a nissan s14
I love this channel and I'm not even into cars!
Need to do the M3 S50B30/32 Euro or Nissan Fj20et. Great video mate
Both of those will be covered soon! Stay tuned. Thanks for watching :)
let talk about E30 M10 engine
Im dead serious, they feel like they have less power down low then my gf's 1.6 60hp vauxhall, but i love the way the power rolls in and the sounds are insane.
its a +200hp 4syl from 80´s its a engine that needs to be revd, what did u expect?
Hi, love your videos, I have owned one of these cars many years ago, I would love it if you did the Nissan vg30t engine single cam ... I had one of these in the late 80s it was in a z31 and was a factory turbo Nissan fairlady ... in the late 80s we modified it and was proving 450ho at the wheels and was for a long time one of the fastest street cars in New Zealand.
Cheers Pieter
Would love to see a video with the m54
I think the M10 was the first Formula1 turbocharged world champion! pretty iconic...
Good german skills
That isetta was SICK!!😅
If you want an s14 but can't afford a s14 there's a cheaper alternative the N42b20 engine
But there are some reliability issues
Nice! Mine s14 turbo engine as Pic in the movie, the purple turbo one.
Performance bmw cover car?
@@n.c4831 yes also!
they should bring back homologation cars for sale, but i fear that people wouldn't buy them nowadays :(
For me it’s e30, sadly my dad sold his e30 m3 for a Mercedes Benz. A regret he has. For me I grew up on the e46 m3
Please please my friend...do one video explanation on about alfa romeo 4 and v6 cylinders ever famous in the story of the motorsport. You really can’t forget of those great engines. We all counting on you for this video. Ciao
Yea i was waiting for RICO's "Rock me Amadeus" to start playing in the background.
Can you do the bmw m12 n/a, not the one that is being mounted to the f1 car but the one that were mounted on the bmw 2002 silhouette or in the sportscar like the osella pa6?
You should do one on the BMW boxer produced from '69-'94. Or how about the M-B OM617?
I'm only at the 6:00 mark and my head is spinning with information. Well-presented information. Driving 4 answers: I'm guessing that you have a significant background in engineering (and it shows) but your ability present what you know in this very clear, concise, and entertaining manner is impressive and is what makes you one of the youtube automotive greats! Thank you again, keep up the good work, and be prepared to receive your honorary PhD in "Enginology" . This is excellent!
best 4 cylinder european made .....hm ....bold claim .
i would say the opel/Vauxhal/GM c20xe is very close , reliable , powerful , cheap , not thirsty at all..also coming from a formula 3 background .
the s14 was always some kind of an " exclusive " club , parts where always rare ( compared to others ) and expensive .
best overall engine in the 2 liter range +/- a few cc would be in my opinion the b and k series from honda ....
worst would be rover k , and to be honest .....VW made products ...;-)
i personally like the f7r engines from renault as well ....
cheap , reliable , no fance schmuck like MAF and still not thirsty , very torquey due to long strokes of 93 mm and still like to rev ... a bit " high " if you want to swap it and gearboxes are not the best
tuning parts are a bit more rare but pretty good stock eingines in the 2l 150 hp range .
Thank you for pointing out the stupidity of modifying a clean example. There's a beautiful E64 M6 with about 27k miles, for sale right now, with "Lambo doors" . Huge bummer.
Can you do one on the S54?
Would love to build this engine and turbo it as a replacement for my fa20, ITBs make such a difference especially with a naturally higher reving engine
I love how mechanical and raw this engine sounds
Great review. I would argue the Honda K/F/B series engines are better, but the s14 is no doubt a legend.
I'd love it if you did one of these on the BMW M57's. Gotta get some diesels in here!
The sexiest word is whatever you wish your girlfriend was whispering to you if she wasn't too busy wispering silly and unsexy things because she finds it hilarious.
(I do too, but don't tell her I said that).
Individual throttle bodies increase throttle response. I thought long runners increase low end torque. This engine has very short runners so throttle response should suck.
Low end torque and throttle response are two different things altogether....
I don't know what the gearing is like on the E30 M3, but on the E46, its appalling.
If you want to feel it male 340hp, you have to do it in 1st gear. 2nd will be doing over 70mph when it gets to 8k rpm and 340hp and by the time you're in 3rd, you're doing prison speed if you're putting the full 340hp out.
Most say the single best mod is changing the final drive ratio in the diff, not adding more power where you can't use it.
So true about people being disappointed by their dream car because they don't understand it and can't drive it properly. S85 has similar problem. I saw so much hate for it: it is bad at lows, it is overcomplicated, it is hard to maintain, BMW could go with supercharger or turbo to get same power or even more, etc. All that just shows that people don't make their homework and simply not ready to own cars like E60 M5 & E63 M6, yet they claim that BMW is a bad car manufacture after that and their Corolla is much better... Really sad story.
Boring in the bottom end, happy in the top end, It sounds like it wants to be driven like a Honda
i usually skip the rap even though it is kooky and fun. but i had to hear the german one and it did not disappoint. you should do them in german from now on.

Is my dream car
your german pronounciation made me chuckle. sounds good though. great video series. this and the video about snap oversteer are the reason why i subbed your channel
How about an episode about opel CIH engines?
You should review a BMW E30! Great cars🏎
What about EA888? It is one of the good engines that germany gave to the world!
It's a disappointment for people who don't understand it's time, and it's purpose. They were $16 to $18K all day everyday, until just a few years ago when they shot up.
The engines that made 230 hp did this because of hotter cams. Not because they didn’t have a cat.
engines from factory that made 230hp was 2.5 and 2.3
Excellent explanation at 19:30, it's drivers car. :)
You killed it with the rap! Super cool!
