Yamaha's quality control at this price point is unbeatable. Very affordable, pro sounding and looking drums, with road worthy ruggedness, beefy tonal power, with an almost natural EQ. Same shell lineage as Recording Custom, so you can't go wrong. These drums are the Hondas of the drum world. Built to last, affordable, look nice, and can be used for anything.

I'd say Mazda! By 04 with the Mazda 3 Honda wasn't as good and I've had 5 integra's and 2 Honda's. Then again, we could just say the Mapex Armory Suite is the Mazda since they are as good or better but no one knows that until they played both, just like you'd have to own a Mazda and a Honda to know you get so much more for your money with the Mazda. Mapex is unbelievable for the money and although I love the stage customs the Armory I would maybe go with.

The closest thing? Tama superstar classic. The rest? Pearl export has less tonality and poor quality hardware. PDP makes too many bad shells. (had 13 drums with bad edges myself). Gretsch Renown shells often have gaps in the plies and occasionally bad edges. Even sonor force has instances of bad shells. Yamaha and Tama have NO defects, ever. I know, I've dealt with them since 1978.

@@scottlowell493 Love TAMA Drums, I have a B/B Starclassic kit and it's been the best kit I've ever played/owned.. Got it on clearance too for a little over $1,000, which is a steal!!! I had a Gretsch Marquee kit before that I really liked, but I have always wanted a Bubinga so I had to get them when I could. The dream is to have a Live Custom Hybrid, Star Bubinga, and my current kit.

Hola and greetings Mr. Rob Brown. I LOVE every single one of your video masterpieces. You're a sensational player and educator. I am a guitarist, drummer and bass player based in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. I cant really say which of the 3 instruments is my primary one because with all the gigs I do, theres no telling how I'll be needed by whoever requires my services. Anyways, the purpose of this comment is to emphasize how much I respect your artist craftsmanship. I recently bought a Yamaha stage custom. You cant beat this package for the Buck. Easy to tune. Which reminds me, my drum tuning is a Breeze and a half thanks to your video that focus on tuning. I do a lot of gigs in clubs where theres little to no time to set up. I get away with using your tuning method on each tom in a random corner before I make my way to setting up the kit on stage. By the time I'm set up and drums are miced and the sound guy dials me in, my kit sounds together and solid. I've already done about a dozen gigs with this kit and sound guys like this kit and are blown away when I tell them how much they are. I get told this kit sounds better than more expensive kits beyond the thousands. However my dream kit which I plan on getting this summer is the Yamaha PHX. In conclusion, I salute and bow to you. I hope I will have the privilege of meeting you in person one day. Much respect and admiration to you. You bring fresh inspiration and great energy.

I work at a music store and we got a few of these in and I was able to set them up and I'm already a fan of yamaha drums but the only thing I would do as an "upgrade" to these drums is change the hoops to a 2.3mm or get die cast hoops or like in the video; wood hoops. it will surely improve the sound. Out of the box though these sets still sound really good for the price. (change the heads cause the ones it comes with suck). Hope my input helps anyone. awesome video!!

I just bought a set of '98 stage customs for $100 that needed an overhaul with a wire brush and some brasso. They cleaned up great. I put evans onyx on top and coated G1's on the bottom. The tone of these drums is phenomenal; after I played them I am having a hard time justifying owning my Master's birch set 🙂. With the ease of buying extra toms/bass drums in the same finish and the build quality of the stage custom series, Yamaha SC is the best deal out there and it's not even close! I've owned all kinds of other makes/models and I can't see any reason not to use these for ANY application!

Great review and very cool playing, Thank You. I've been checking out this exact kit in either the Natural or Honey Amber finish. These drums seem to sound good in all--or most- of the UA-cam videos I've seen them demoed in. Looks like you used a pretty detailed mic set-up along with the acoustically designed room. What kind of mics did you use? Those wood hoops look super cool, do they help with the tone/sustain? I am comparing this kit to a Mapex Armory in a similar price range, the Mapex comes in at about $150 more. It has the hybrid Birch/Maple shells and comes in much cooler finishes. Not sure if it sounds better than this Yamaha Stage Custom though...any thoughts or opinions about that?

    • @RobBeatdownBrown
      @RobBeatdownBrown  8 років тому +1

+Richard Alan Haven't spent any time with the Mapex stuff so I cant really comment. I CAN tell you, though, after having and gigging with this kit for a year now that you'll be 100% satisfied and extremely impressed with it. I have wood hoops on it in this clip and as much as I'd like to tell you that they affect the tone & sustain, they don't really. At least not enough for me to notice or care about. The hoops, for me, are more for the aesthetic impact. Much like throwin aftermarket chrome 20" rims on your Chrysler 300. They'll sound just as good with the stock flange hoops on it. My mic set up is pretty basic here with Beyerdynamic Opus 88s on the toms, mainly because of how simple they can clip on to wood hoops, and a couple of Apex 435s for overheads. But they're just here to amplify the kit. No additional EQ was added here which if you listen to the toms in a good set of ears is pretty friggin crazy. I love these drums. Apparently so does Mr Weckl. I haven't taken my PHX kit out in a year. Yamaha puts fancy finishes lower on the list of priorities, which is why you don't see many frou-frou sparkles, sunbursts, wraps or fades on their drums. Just a handful of simple, nice clean finishes to choose from.

Everything that rob said is right. Just because these kits are $650 which are very affordable they didn't "skimp" on quality and sound. I switched out the rims for the 2.3 mill dinahoops from the absolutes and it fattend up the sound just a bit. I put Evans G1s on the tops and it's exactly the sound I was going for! You know how many times I've had to apologize to my PHX kit for never taking it anywhere nice anymore?! These shells are easily 30% lighter, they all fit in the back seat of my truck and I wouldn't stress even half as much if/when they get nicked or scratched up. I heard these things on a playback of a live recording from a weekend of theater shows I played and it freakin' blew my brain. The 14" floor sounded like a low tuned 16. This is a high end kit, man. No question.

I just picked up a Stage Custom Birch, (2015 model I think) it has the 10 lug snare, for 250 dollars. It hasn't been hardly used. I feel like I struck gold, I had watched this video before ever stumbling upon the kit, and I told myself if I ever got a chance to pick this kit up for 650 retail I would. Happen to be at a garage sale the other day and there was sitting this perfect honey amber Stage custom with 250 on the tag.

I put coated heads on it but other than the 14" floor tom the toms feel a little choked out with the coated heads. Hey Rob, Great playing man! I have a question about the Stage Custom Finish. How old is this Kit now and is it still as White as it was when you got it first? I consider getting one soon in that Finish and mostly the White Kits will become yellow over time. How about yours?

Hi Matthias. I no longer have this kit, man. It was just a loaner from Yamaha that I used for about 6 months, then picked up the Raven Black kit with the 22 so I’m not sure of the lifespan of the white finish. I wanna say you’ll be just fine, though

Hey! Have you checked the bearing Edge of the resonant side of the snare? I got the exact kit 5 months ago and just realized that it is completely flat on 2 sides of the bearing Edge, it doesn't have the angle all the way around, which cause the head to sit properly. 😕 Is it normal?

Recently bought this type of set,l. Mainly because of my enthousiasm about Yamaha (own a hipgig junior Manu Katche; previously had the original Maple Custom - the best - and a Beech Custom).
Price, (shallow) sizes of toms and functionality convinced me to buy it...online 😄, without seeing nor hearing it live.
It is impressive in both sound and overall quality.
Only remarks and questions from my side:
    - all Shells have blue ink Dots inside. Is this common, like a quality control ?
    - snaredrum only sounds pleasant to me in (very) high tuning. Could this be eexplained nu the usage of original Remo UT coated head?
    - compared to my Pearl Masters Studio BRX: the Yamaha Shell is light weight and airy/responsive. The thicker Pearl Shells tend to have more definition and sound a luitle more sophisticated .
Hoe does the SC Birch compare to the Recording Custom (and a Pearl Masters Studio BRX with diecast hoops)?

Given that these drums sound as good as they do at such a low price point, you have to wonder how much sonic "hype" is employed by manufacturers when they discuss ply thickness, species of wood, etc. Granted, Mr. Brown has made some upgrades. Obviously the finish is a cost factor, and an exotic veneered kit should cost more than a solid color lacquer. But in terms of actual *sonic* difference, if you closed your eyes and listened to this clip, would you be able to tell the difference between these Yammies and a much more expensive kit, like Sakae Almighty birch, or Sonor birch, etc? I'm not sure I could.

Speculating here but I’m guessing Evans G2 Coated on the batter for the Toms and G1 clear for the reso head. The bass is probably a single ply emad batter and Evans inked reso. Snare looks like a hydraulic blue and maybe a standard snare side from Evans. Take that with a grain of salt though
