    I had a birch Yamaha kit back when i was 15 playing in a band (around 2010). There was a gig we played where another band had to use my kit and he literally wanted to take mine home after lol. He had a custom SJC kit and he still just loved the sound of mine. I'll never play anything but Yamaha now!

    Those Yamahas are hands down the best value in drums out there. The bop kit is amazing for its price. I know a bunch of pro players who use it and are totally happy. You got such a deal, way to go. Thanks for the video.

    In my world, these are the best 'bang for the buck' drums available. I think they sound better than my Absolute Maple kit! That's $3000 vs $650!

    Nice little review! I have a set of these in Cranberry Red, outfitted with Remo Pinstripes. They sound so good that I sold my Birch Custom Absolutes. The snare drum is remarkably good, all things considered. I replaced the batter head with a Remo Controlled Sound and I would bring that drum into the studio with me now.
    I wasn't thrilled with the unfinished bass drum hoops either so I hit mine with three coats of wipe-on poly. It darkened them up some, smoothed them out and added smudge and dirt protection. I think they would look sharp with the honey amber lacquer.
    Truly fantastic drum kits for the money.

    • @nickolausdiedrichsen8719

      Thanks Ted! I think I'll try poly on the hoops as well. I tried an ambassador X on the snare one time but it wasn't quite right for me. I might try a coated CS sometime, haven't thought of doing that yet.

    Cool vid. Just picked same up with an 8” tom. I stripped them all the way down, trued the bearing edges to perfection and 5 coats hand rubbed tung oil on all shell insides after prepping with 320 grit. They are freakin stunning now with all that labor and should be much more stable with humidity when it might be a factor.

    You're the only guy I've seen that tuned these so you can see how good these really sound. That's awesome! Almost all videos show them tuned to sound like cardboard boxes. These drums sound 100% professional. They sing! Urethane the interiors,carnauba wax edges and they will improve a little bit more too. I ordered a bop kit but it may be a while bcuz manufacturing is at a standstill it seems due to Covid. It'll be used for most of my jazz gigs. I love that I won't have to freak out about having expensive drums on the road and sacrifice literally nothing in sound quality. played the old philipinne mahogany stage customs at a house gig and even they sounded as good as many high end drums if you know how to tune and select the right heads.

    • @nickolausdiedrichsen8719
      @nickolausdiedrichsen8719  Рік тому +1

      I’ve never tried ‘em with anything besides pinstripes and a GMAD, but they’re not to hard to tune. The 12” is a little finicky but it tunes up. ok. I’m kind of curious about what some single ply coated heads would sound like on that kit.

    • @musicalala
      @musicalala Рік тому

      @@nickolausdiedrichsen8719 I imagine phenomenal with single ply heads. In my opinion better because the tom would resolve even more detail( for me good, for others bad- cardboard tom lovers). Emad sounds really good actually in your kit. I agree that lighter 1.5 hoops are just fine. Nice if you have to lug em around too. Saves some weight.
      G1 coated were on that house kit I mentioned and birch should sound even more focused and would be really bright. Perfect for me bcuz when playing Latin stuff,I play toms like timbales. You have to like that wide open sound and drummer has to have good volume control(dynamics) in small rooms with thin heads. Another great head choice are synthetic calfskin whether it's Fiberskyn,Aquarian Vintage or Evans 56. The way you tuned the pinstripes were great for those that like two ply heads. They sound like Neil Peart's- beautiful open sound. Rock doesn't have to equate to cardboard box toms. People spend thousands on drums then tune them to sound like the cheapest money can buy. Most instrumentalists buy expensive instruments to resolve as much detail as possible out of a fine instrument then there's drummers. 😁

    Great playing, man. I sold my Stage Customs last year because I didn't have the room for it and now am regretting it!. They really tick all the boxes. Awesome sound, affordable, widely available add-on drums, top tier Yamaha quality, and they look so slick!
    Also, I totally agree with you on the 17 inch depth on the 20 inch kick. It really makes no sense sound wise. I'm guessing the they use the same machine for the plywood as the 22 inch kick at the factory and that's why they are both 17 deep. If I get another set, I'm definitely going with a 22 inch kick this time.

    • @fartpooboxohyeah8611
      @fartpooboxohyeah8611 Рік тому

I bought my set brand new, so that hole was covered with a plastic cap, and I just never saw it. It was hidden in plain sight. 😂 my question is I have like seven cymbal stands, and none fit that hole. So is there a specific stand I can use to mount my splash cymbal ? Thanks so much. I'd go with the Stage Custom just because of the durability and ease of use of use of the hardware.

    Does anyone have a good answer why they have to make the bd 17” I mean almost all the reviews I’ve watched or forums say same thing. Why? Most everyone I hear loves a 20x14 and swears by them. I don’t get their thinking on that particular point.

    • @nickolausdiedrichsen8719
      @nickolausdiedrichsen8719  Рік тому

      17 is a bit excessive, but the more I play deep bass drums, the more I realize they are kind of a cool yet different animal, The 14” depth is a million times more versatile, but the 17” is great if you are going to tune down and bury the beater all the time.

    Should i go for the 14" low tom 20" kick or the 16" low tom 22" kick?

    • @nickolausdiedrichsen8719
      @nickolausdiedrichsen8719  2 роки тому

      I think the 14" & 20" is a more versatile set up that covers most bases, but if you play a double pedal, I'd go 22" & 16".

      If I may, I prefer the look of the yamaha's and really love the tom mounting system, so I would go Yamaha. I hate L-arm tom set ups e.g., Tama, Ludwig, Mapex, Gretsch and DW. Although I could deal with Sonors L set up as they are unique.

    Clean sounding set for the money of course. Snare is cheap and fragile. I use my good Gretsch and DW snares with them live

      Snare is the same wood and plies as the toms, same lugs, same rims. If the snare is cheap and fragile, so is the rest of the kit.

    6 ply birch wood..uuh that's not the kind Amazon, sweet water and guitar center are selling. There's only have a very thin layer of birch but calling it full birch wood. When really it particular board underneath the birch veneer. Buyer beware.
