This vid has been a life saver. I am installing the new Diore 12 speed cassette which is the same but has no alu rings. I just pulled apart all the plastic that it came mounted on and didn't kow it was there to help with installing it. This vid has helped me put the rings and spacers on in the correct order.....which I had completely lost....Thanks!
I’ve been running full XT 12s for few weeks now and so far it’s awesome! 51T granny is pretty sweet when the legs get spent! Shifts awesome, and very affordable.
Love ur work
Always a quality review.
Its been a couple of year, I was using a 10-45 for about 3 yrs on my hardtail, I just bought another one yesterday. Feels fresh but the old one wasn't that bad. Pretty durable
Thanks for sharing not many of those cassettes in use vs 10-51
Another outstanding video - thank you!
Nice video. I forgot where to put the thin and thick spacer hahahah thanks again!!!💞
Go with The specifik 12s chainring and 12s chain, wolftooth has 12s shimano rings and race face. I ran The xtr rear der and xtr shifter with e13 12s cassette and eagle chain and a "normal" chainring.
Now When i run it with race Face 12speed shimano cinch chainring, The xt cassette you also have in The video, xtrm9100 chain... Its just perfect, and please trust me. Its so godamn good. With your set up and not taking shimanos and my words that it is a system, its not something they say, its True. And the xt xtr slx 12s are all ebike compatible. Wich says something about how much power and abuse it can take... And no i have never ridden an ebike
That’s my cassette!
I've been using XTR CS-M9100 10-51 for 8 months. One of the protrusions of 10T gear is a bit fragile, you need to be careful when you install the cassette. Unfortunately, I broke it by accident but fortunately, the cassette works fine so far, haha.
Thank you
About to buy a new race bike with SLX 12 speed. Keen to try it out.
I need a steel industry nine Micro Spline for my eMTB, I hope they make it soon because I’ll buy this system!
Wait, they put microsplines to increase the contact area to prevent damage to the hub splines and then they machine out the middle to decrease it again?
Can´t wait mine arrive¡¡¡
I have XTR and AXS and I think using AXS derailleur with shimano cassette and chain would be epic
Micro spline patent is stupid. I really dont understand why shimano did this but right now the availability is terrible with only 3 or 4 brands selling it (shimano, dt, chris king and maybe an other, not sure). Just for that i dont think i'd ever go shimano 12s
Watching this while I have 3x8 drivetrain LOL.......
Sunrace 11-40 cassette ($20) Motsuv 32T narrow wide chainring (under $10) and you've got yourself a solid wide range 1x8 with minimal to no chain drops...
Sell your factory cassette, front derailleur and shifter on local buy/sell and get a few bucks back on top of that. Youre welcome.
@@evictioncarpentry2628 32 - 40 as lowest gear? That's like 0.8 ratio compared to modern 0.65 ratio in 1x sytstems with a 32 chainring and 50 sprocket at the back and the ratio he probably has with the lowest speed on their 3x8 setup, good luck climbing on that if you don't live in a very plain area.
@@Asthbendriel I climbed with it no problem. I also only run a 32-42 on my 1x....i climb with that easily. Grow a pair of legs and don't be a bitch.
Once Hope sort the microspline patent issue I'll upgrade to Shimano 12speed. The fact of being a Clyde and shifting under power with a less finicky drivetrain sounds like a win.
I was thought that xt cassette is lighter than gx.but it isn't.
Keep in mind that micro spline is needed and it doesn't seems so super duper 12s solution.
Just upgraded to gx eagle. Compare the two after testing :)
Looking forward to microspline becoming common, it should allow for Deore or lower level 10t cogs. Then we could have something like 9spd 10-45+ cheap cassettes.
@@LoveMTB I think Shimano will eventually release something like Altus 9spd microspline, it just might take ten or so years. 10spd at least. Microshift and Box have 11-45 or 50 9 speed cassettes but a 10t cog gives you better range for less weight and cost than a 50t - makes more sense to increase range that way for a budget group.
Main reasons I like microspline are cost and simplicity. SLX cassettes are already same price as NX cassettes with better features (hg+, 10t cog), and I fully expect a 11 or 12spd Deore that destroys SX in every way. And we'll be able to swap cogs if one wears particularly quickly.
Compared to XD microspline is the superior technology in every way except weight.
@@LoveMTB sram certainly seems to think that price point is worthwhile with SX, and really the lower end is Shimano's bread and butter.
Hello which tool did you use to tighten the cassette to the hub? Is it the shimano tl-lr15 or lr-10? Also, what do you use to lubricate the cogs? Should I lubricate the hub as well?
Which cassette do you like better with the Shimano derailleur?
Now that you had some time with the xt 12 speed cassette, any major improvement over the gx eagle cassette when being used with the other shimano 12 speed components?
Thanks buddy, you are always very helpful. I’m just trying to decide whether to go full gx eagle or xt m8100 and gx eagle cassette as I don’t have the micro spline option at the moment but am accustomed to the multiple shift jumps of the shimano shifters.
Hi there, can you separate the individual small sprockets from eachother? Im dying to add a 11T sprocket between the 10 and 12, and am willing to sacrifice the 18 or so if possible
Thanks in advance
what park tool # are you using to tighten lock ring on the XT8100
I would like to use the 10-12 cog on a Deore XT 11 speed freehub steps instead of the 11-13t. is there a work around for this?
2×11 xt the best.
My derailleur bikes are all 6-10 speed. 10 seemed like more than enough. They never slowed me down, not at all. I can even almost keep up with youngsters 1/2 my age! On long rides they have no chance! They beg to quit early, whine, bitch, complain and make excuses. Its kinda funny really. Thats like fuel for my fire!!
I ride a fixed gear ‘cross bike mostly though. That and singlespeeds are what keeps me fast!!
Really, if you want to go faster, all ya gotta do is pedal harder.
i have slx 11-46 and it's enough on my HT 29" XCO
i want to update my trek i currently run 2x10 but want to go 1x12 love your set i would like to replicate it or at close to it i am sure i dont have a micro spline free hub so i have to work that out ..I am new to mtb and have little knowledge of changing things i am competant mechanically but i am weak on component knowledge i dont know what will or wont fit and i am having trouble knowing the best approach ,...i like the xt range shifters , rear deraillier etc but the micro spline i am not sure if i can just change my old one to a micro spline or not ..thNKS FOR THE CONTENT FOOD FOR THOUGHT ..
I would check this out first as a guide - ua-cam.com/video/wrw5BmumT-M/v-deo.html
and you can use this as a cassette.
ua-cam.com/video/COACxEtQUR8/v-deo.html
Have fun!
Have they upgraded these since?
Hi, I am wondering if this cassette would work well with my Sram GX Chain?
I have the XT derailleur but stock dub crank and sram eagle chain.
Need to upgrade my cassette and Sram NX is heavy for XC and not available.
when you installed the cassette did the lock ring slip? ive tried tightening it up a few times now and it gets so far then slips, and spins? like its not locking in position? everything seems lined up with the correct spacers etc
@@LoveMTB will do thanks, but you've not had this issue?
Nice Video? Question: which XT Der are you using? The SG is for the 46 cassette and the SGS is supposed to be for the 51 cassette. I have the SG, just wondering if the SG der will work with the SRAM GX cassette. TIA.
Is that a 10-52T?
I'm switching back to XT getting rid of GX eagle.
me too
Same
Sweet! Also wondering if HG+ actually makes a difference. :)
It's probably the best feature of shimanos 12 s groups
HG+ is all about that you can shift under load, now you need to hold back the power on the crank before shifting this with HG+ is all solved.
@@LoveMTB I read about, not tested myself only writing what I know
@@LoveMTB Well I will watch it for sure and yes every person has a different comment on products.
Waiting for a 12s dropbar shifter before swapping :)
I believe the spacing is close to the SRAM 12spd spacing and ditto for derailleur ratio so you can use a microshift 12spd bar end, or if you want a brifter you can buy gevenalle.
@@vaynomblenner Bar ends... No. Gevenalle... That's a no again. 😁
It's funny that SRAM has Eagle at freaking SX level, they use the same cassettes for both 1x drop bar and MTB stuff, and pretty much the same derailleurs with a slightly different pull ratio. Yet still no drop bar 12spd option (other than AXS).
@@HOllyBOni it's a small though growing market segment, and the companies involved would rather you buy a separate road and mtb. If those options don't appeal I would go for a jtek shiftmate with campy 12spd shifters.
@@vaynomblenner To be honest i'm considering going back to a cheap to run 10spd GRX setup with a 46/30 and 11-36 instead of all the bling and trendy stuff.
Dura Ace Bar ends rock! Mine still work after 25 years!! 10 speed friction works fine if you know how to shift. I learned before they were all clicky. It always works even if you bend your hanger or tweak your derailleur.
Steer clear of Microshit! Really! Horrible quality, cheap junk!
It's old shimano or similar 11s crank compatible with New shimano 12s?
Tried running a Sram GX [or other sram] 12 spd chain on Shim XT Cassette ?
Great Vid! Just installed an Xt Cassette on xt hub and get a irritating scratchy noise from the freehub. Any idea where this could come from? Looks like cassette moves half a mm axially into the freehub/hub. Not sure why and how to avoid that 👍🏻
Unfortunately you might have to live with that take a look here - ua-cam.com/video/GoMO00wjFaI/v-deo.html
@@LoveMTB thanks a lot. This is it. I am stunned. Bought the XT wheels basically blind as superb experience with older XT hubs. Now thinking of returning them back to the shop. Really surprised with this flaw from shimano and no real cure in sight. To me creaking only occurs when freehub moves axially into hub body so not sure if maybe shims could help to avoid that movement. But these wheels are brandnew and most likely I just give them back..😖
@@johnscambles5609 If you can...I know I would.
No grease on the spline?
Hi, which hub did you have this 12s shimano mounted on and how many POE has it had? Thanks a lot for doing all the experiments with mixing drivetrains.
Can m8100 cassette work with the new gx rear derailleur? Thank you
Thank you alot please have a great day
Has anyone tried the slx 12spd HyperG chain and cassette with a sram eagle xsyn 2 ST chainring???
It's a bit unclear if Shimano 12-speed cassettes will fit regular Shimano / Sram freehubs. Or will only 11 or greater smallest sprocket 12-speed systems fit said freehubs? Could you, please, elaborate? Thank you.
Is quick release compatible for xt 1x12 speed or thru axle only? tnx
@@LoveMTB I think thats gonna be the last resort but id prefer shimano so i might just buy a thru axle frame
Bikes are running GX Eagle at the moment. Not planning to change at this time, but let us know how it works!
Trying to get there but I am having difficulties finding a place to sleep. Not certain yet but we may end up staying in Quebec City and just drive there for one or two days. You?@@LoveMTB
So we will be staying in Quebec City and will be at Mont Ste-Annes on Sunday and probably Monday morning (September 1 and 2).
@@LoveMTB Certainly! By the way what is your real name, I realize that I only know you as LoveMTB! :)
Can anyone tell if the XTR-12 10-51 cassette has two spacers as well? I am wondering as I can remember only one and my cassette is currently driving me nuts uphill due to the noises it makes in lower gears. Thx for the help
@@LoveMTB Sorry, but I have to ask: Is that one placed on the freehub before I put the cassette on the freehub? Somewhere I read that the later cassettes were changed: The spacer was probably an integral part of the cassette there. But I am still not sure about that. As far as I remember my cassette came with only one black spacer between two sprockets :-/
@@LoveMTB Checked again what I can find about XTR and I found that thin spacer "Y1X401500". Definitely do not have that
In my opinion, it looks like more of a starfish than a spider .. LoL😎
Is this ok for 11 speed drivetrain ? The xt 10-45 cogs? thanks sir
LoveMTB how about the m8100 10-45t cassette? Would it fit to hope pro 4 12x142 micro spline hub? Thanks
I run 10 speed at the moment but I got new wheels and they support 11 speed so I'm thinking of getting 11 speed cassette and then replace derailleur and shifter
12 speed is too fancy for me and I already get lost on my 10 speed cassette
I never know what gear I'm on 😂😂
10 speed hub supports 11 speed...

Wanted to go full Shimano XT groupset on my new bike build. Didn’t want the hubs due to longevity concerns. Micro spline freehubs are really limited. I’m going with Chris King and GX eagle cassette. Love their brakes and shifters but really hated the slow rollout due to licensing. It’s like Shimano don’t care about after market buyers.
They probably just don't want the situation with HG to happen where low quality aluminum freehubs would get damaged by the cassette. That said, Shimano is really slow for sure.
Is it ok to use mid cage derailleur xt with 11-51 cassette ?
@@LoveMTB yes 12 speed
@@LoveMTB no xt. In UK the majority of derailleurs are long cage.

@@LoveMTB so if I wanna go with 10-51 12 speed cassette I do have to go with SGS mech ?
How much does it cost ?
How much that items sir
Idk man.
I favor xdome designs now and only xdome. All 1 piece design. Pricey but solid and light with no chance of chater
Its a cnc process. Cant be much more expensive with 3d printing now. But i get it. Any excuse to inflate pricing.
Ive not ridden a trail in over a year now.

Hi, do you know if there is a difference in spacing between SRAM, Sunrace and Shimano 12 speed cassettes? If you do, can you share the values? Maybe a video about it. There is this huge discussion all over bike forums everywhere but hard to say if they are different and if so what are the measurements. Since Shimano came with the Microspline and a lot of bikers wants to run 1x12 but don't want to change freehub body. I've been having issues with XT drivetrain with Sunrace MZ90 and SLX chain. I saw some mentioning some differences between Shimano and SRAM (link below) but also others saying that they are the same. A clarifying videos would be a huge help. Thank you again.

If you can, show differences in chain specs between those 3 main manufacturers. Thank you again.
@@LoveMTB Sunrace 11-50 didn't work well with shimano chain but I had an improvement with a NX chain, not the best performance though. The mechanic said that it should be better after some rides as it gets worn. Let's see. Thank you.
@@LoveMTB yep! Thanks.
2 very annoying things about shimano 12 speed: #1: Patented...wtf man. Now I have to get new wheels to upgrade. No way, not happening. #2: Why make the cogs independent? Have they learning nothing from the older shimano bodies that get ripped the shreds by this stupid design? Especially bad when the body is alu.
Where these cassette Ranges stopping ???? a 20 speed cassette with 1000% range ???? a 11 speed 42 2 x @ front range is still better for me
New hub (wheel) for one tooth less? Sounds too much like Sram. Too bad, No sale here! I have Chris Kings. Theyre gonna last the rest of my life! I normally like Shimano drivetrains, I hate Sram with a passion. Except their chains. Ive been riding them since they were called Sachs.
10 speed was my limit 3 years ago and thats too many. I have 9 older bikes. 3 are fixed gear or singlespeeds. Thats what I ride 70% of the time.
Yeaaaah no thanks. Bought 11-46T cassettes for $20 from China to replace all my 10s. No need for another 2 gears lol.
11-46? Yeah no thanks. I'm perfectly fine with my 8spd 11-28. No need for another 2 gears. Whimp.
