    Good video Tyler. As you know, Broccoli, cucumber, salad do have carbs. You are discovering the power of low-carb, and that's great. However, you do need some insulin for proper body function. Even good carbs and protein are going to elevate blood sugar. Please, please get continue to eat low-carb, and use some insulin to keep that blood sugar under 150 after meals!!! 200 is bad!

      KenDBerryMD our 16 year old son is type 1 diabetic and is in his honeymoon stage.. he is doing very low carb diet and little to no insulin for the past two weeks. The highest his blood sugar has gotten is like 180 after eating 30 carbs which isn’t normal for us. Usually he does omad and only eats around 10-20 carbs a day. His blood sugar is staying in line perfect to where it needs to be all day even in the mornings. Is this a safe process for him to continue?

      @@anniealbertson4081 No usually someone especially a kid needs around 60 since food turns into energy not eating food without enough carbs is bad.

    I have been a type 1 diabetic for 34 years with an onset at age 19. Since I went clean Keto, my blood sugars have been near non-diabetic levels and my insulin requirements are down substantially. I also entered into the Keto way of eating after a 3 day fast, which I think is key to get rid of all the stored sugar in your liver and muscles so you can begin burning fat as a fuel source. As I look at your plate of bacon and eggs (one of my personal favorites), you're eating too much protein. Protein does convert to carb, but a a very slow rate so it takes longer to realize the spike. Eat one meal a day and eat more HEALTHY fats, which have almost no BS impact. Good luck!!!!

    Fellow T1D, I use a pump and as long as I eat low carb I don’t bolus at all through the day and the sugar stays pretty steady! Nice video

    When your body is used to having carb-heavy meals and you suddenly take away all the carbs, your body thinks your food sources are insufficient and kicks stored glucose into your system to keep your blood levels up. You need to adjust your endocrine system. You also had lots of protein with not enough fats to level it out. Protein converts to carbs several hours after eating and spikes you.
    (I've had T1D for 12 years and have used variations of low carb diets.)

    Good that you're experimenting at such age. I do 3 days every other week eating only salads and nuts. I go about it with zero rapid acting insulin but I just keep keep taking my basal lantus yet diem from 28 to 22-24 units and it's such a joy seeing steady blood glucose without the stress of predicting carbs intake and working out how much insulin needed to counter it

    Hi honey! As a type one we need to take insulin to keep our blood sugar under 150 unless it’s going to drop naturally from activity. So it’s important to plan for correction carbs & insulin adjustments around your own schedule.
    A type one diabetic cannot remove insulin completely through diet change like a type 2 diabetic can.
    Great job on the low carb! Eggs are 1 carb each and those calculations are great to learn about. You will not need much insulin with lower carb or no carb, but you will find what works best for you through practice and experience.
    Watch out for opinion and the old style of diabetic advice. The high carbs are not mandatory so meat and eggs are great for health. Doctors and dieticians are catching up but it’s taking a bit of time for everyone to catch on to things like gluconeogenesis and hope the body runs more efficiently on fat and nutritional ketones. The type one community as well as society in general can get a little fear based with the past forty years of teachings on fat, cholesterol, vegetables and so on.
    Just use your cgm and how you feel to calculate what is going in there and hopefully a low carb doctor can join you in the ongoing education of life. ❤
    You’re already ahead of most! I’ll include an interview that helps with understanding this a bit better as I’m not equipped to teach. But leaning about it sure is interesting. Stay curious honey!

    Interesting experiment. Thanks. Your body can convert small amounts of protein and fat directly into glucose. Plus your body needs insulin in order to use the glucose produced 24/7 by your liver. A type 1 can never stop injecting insulin. It would be good to explain to people that you were injecting long-term insulin and when you said "no insulin" you meant no meal-time or bolus insulin.     I’ve been type 1 diabetic since 2004 and have always been told to pair a background rate of insulin with a balanced diet that of itself also requires insulin. The only time it would work to stop insulin delivery without severely detrimental outcomes would be during vigorous exercise such as running or cycling as this will pull your blood sugar down with minimal residual insulin in your system

    I hope you start giving your insulin. I've been a type 1 diabetic for 50 yrs and have done a lot of experimenting with different diets. I agree eating a low carb diet is good but you're not eating a 0 carb diet. I'm on the carnivore diet myself and believe it's best despite of what my doctors and nutritionists say. An endocrinologist taught me a long time ago that 60% of the ounces in protein that you eat equals the amount of carbs you would be eating. Example: a 30oz steak time 60% equals 18 carbs. Depending on your body, (EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT), you would give the appropriate amount of insulin for 18 carbs. 3 large boiled eggs is 18 grams of protein which would be 10.8 grams of carbs. I'm in my 60's and it takes more insulin because I'm pretty sedentary. You would probably burn much more calories than I. Do some experimenting but don't go running around with high blood sugars and not giving any insulin, PLEASE! I commend you though for thinking outside the box. Good luck!!

      Really interested in this 60% rule! Don't worry, I'm usually in the low 100s daily, but for some reason, my blood sugar started in the 200s and didn't recover. What's your A1C??

      Hi@@TylerSpeers! I learned the 60% rule in the 90s from an Endocrinologist. Everybody is different though, you might need a different rule. If your BG is running in the los 100s you're doing great! That's where mine are. I'm shooting to get my A!C into the mid 5 range but they're hanging around the low 6 range right now. I recently started using a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor). if you're not familiar with them you might check them out. You can watch your blood sugars all day long. I set the alarm on it if my BG runs below 80 or above 180. This helps a lot especially when you're sleeping. You can use these also to adjust how much insulin certain foods need by watching the CGM like a hawk.

    Hi!
    In my opinion the method it helped me to keep blood sugar good in the morning is skipping the breakfast: stop having breakfast in the morning! and eat later. That is called "interval fasting" and is working really good for me as a diabetic type 1 like you. In the morning your liver is puting some glucose in the blood to make you wake up and to "start" the day. That is because hormones such as glucagon, cortisol or adrenaline go high in the morning and produce this reaction in your body (blood sugar going up!). If you have breakfast, even without carbohydrates or low carb, that is not going to help recover from high blood sugar. So when you wake up and your blood sugar is too high, correct it with some Bolus insulin and skip breakfast! Then when your body doesn't have this stress anymore from high blood sugar, you can have some low carb meal at noon or (better) later (at 1 pm, 2pm...).Maybe you think "I can't stand it without breakfast". I thought it as well... BUT! YOU'LL GET USED TO IT VERY SOOON! Eating keto (no carbs or very low, healthy fats and a bit of protein) and doing interval fasting at the same time are the key to not get hungry! you won't ! because the fat is going to keep you fulled / satiated. The carbohydrates are the BIG problem for diabetics type 1, your blood sugar goes up so fast like in a roll coaster and then goes down fast! hipoglucemia (low blood sugar) happens really often, then you eat because you want to solve the hipoglucemia and then blood sugar goes up really fast! and it is like a circle without any end... you will stop this problem by doing keto diet (low carb or no carb) + interval fasting. Just try for some time and make a video! ;)
    Ah! Please try to keep your sugar under 200 ... that's too high, just correct it with some bolus... but don't let it go down by "itself"... just inject some bolus. I know doctors say that after eating having blood sugar value of 200 or higher is "normal", but it is NOT!! that's destroying your organs, body nerves, ... and of course! don't forget to inyect Basal insulin, you need it although you are not eating anything! but you'll probably going to need less if you start doing keto + interval fasting.

    Even when fasting you need insulin. Insulin has many jobs, not just sugar control.

      @@TylerSpeers What you need to understand is the difference between long lasting insulin and regular insulin is.... that's right nothing. They are the same insulin. Something like lantus is engineered to release slowly into the blood stream. Hypothetically if you were really poor and could only afford the more expensive lantus, you could survive on it alone but with poor control. Speaking of poor control, your breakfast BG was 220 and you are underweight. I hope you read this and switch to an insulin pump as soon as possible and stop destroying your eyes.

      @@mad0uche You need to re-calculate your Lantus dosage so that you are between 70-120 all day while fasting. That is the purpose of basal. Even if I fast, I still take 2u of Humalogl to counter the dawn phenom or else it will rise 20mg in 10 minutes. Somedays if I wake up at 75mg and after a shower, it will be 120mg if I don't take 2u of Humalog. Please read Dr. Bernstein's Diabetic Solution or watch his videos.

      Exactly! If my daughter doesn't have insulin for 3 hours (basal ) she will have high ketones and start dka! Miss information can kill people t1ds need insulin every threw hours or a long lasting whether or not they eat. Im glad I saw your comment. I cant even watch this without becoming enraged

    Great vid, recommend adjusting your levels first thing in the morning to something in the normal range so your not floating above 200 + all day , once there continue with the no carbs. This has worked for me.

    Cortisol will drive blood glucose up in the morning naturally (often called Dawn Phenomenon), so it may not have been the breakfast

      I shared t.co/mKpzg34keZ to Type 2 diabetes patients. The person has been able to cure his diabetic issues and achieved a 5.9 HA1c. The health of the other person has considerably enhanced. His fasting blood glucose was decrease to 110mg/dL and he is no longer susceptible to heart trauma, losing his legs and arms, and also eye impairment and neuropathy

      Cortisol plays a small role, how about glycogen from your liver. A human pancreas always secretes insulin to prevent catabolism.

      You need bolus insulin for protein.. misinformation at its highest form!!! Maybe if you want to be in hyperglycemia, but for the normal non diabetic range that's impossible.

    As a diabetic type 1, i once decided i want to see how much glucose has my body stored/ can produce while fasting. Long story short, I fasted for 5 days, my body had enough glucose to cover me for 4. 5th day was a little rough cuz i was borderline on hypoglycemia. But i also felt great and had lots of energy

    I think adding fat to a meal helps keep glucose levels lower also. My son eats a lot of avocado in his meals and has had good results.

    That dawn phenomenon is no joke. I am extremely tight on my keto diet. I almost lean a bit closer to carnivore but still try to get those micronutrients (cauliflower/broccoli). I can attest to much of this as I even fast 18 hours per day (only eat between 3pm and 9pm). So... I go to bed between 80-95 most nights. Wake up - 170-190. I usually drop in a fast acting upon waking (5-8 units) and it comes back down after a bit. My keto meals still require 3-5 units. When I don't, my BG will go up to 150-180 after a couple hours.
    The real takeaway here is that us T1Ds can drastically reduce our insulin needs and maintain healthy levels. AND healthy bodyfat percentages (more insulin = more fat gain).
    This week I plan on starting a split on the lantus (basal) and see if that works. I have only hesitated because I know it means that I will have to go through an adjustment period.
    Either way... Thanks for posting this. I hope it helps a lot of other T1Ds out there to at least see that there are options available that may help maintain better control with less insulin needed.

      This is really the way to do it. So many in here are walking around with 200+ bg and thinking this won't effect them. All of us are so wedded to carb intake as a path to happiness. Of course people are different and it's possible some wouldn't have the fabulous results you have, but I've seen them giving t1d jello in the hospital so it's no wonder people are confused.

    Actually. Did you know that fats and protein will raise your BGs? So it makes sense you went up after breakfast and dinner. Some people take the same ratio for the profiles and some people half it. It all depends on how your body reacts!

    I really hope you start taking your insulin like you should. If you let your blood sugars stay in the 200s or higher for long period of time problems can happen. I know for a fact as I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 19 years and I am now blind due to stuff like this

    Remember to up your fats, and keep your proteins at a low moderate. To much proteins will cause your liver to convert the protein into glucose via gluconeogenesis, hence you won't get fat adapted (which is the entire goal of a keto diet). Only when your liver is starved with glucose, your body will start burning fat cells (ketones) as fuel.
    As far as your meals go, it's pretty much the same message again. You need more fat!
    Your breakfast is the best one, although you could up your fats even more by adding some butter to your eggs. Remember that the fat renders from bacon as you cook it, which makes it basically all proteins. You could also try removing some of the egg whites as it contains no fats at all.
    Lunch is basically carbs and proteins, as again the fat renders from the bacon. (not saying there is a lot of carbs, but compared to the amount of fat in that meal it's too much)
    Dinner is the same story.
    Not trying to be unnecessarily critical, but a high fat content is paramount to this diet working for you. Wish you the best!!

      Absolutely agree with increasing fat intake but not for the reason you mentioned, fat adaptation isn’t disrupted by Gluconeogenesis.

    I recommend looking at Dr. Richard Bernstein's method. Bottom line - protein should be covered by Regular insulin, which is slower than Rapid insulin (given that the meal has a bit of s/low carb - veggies).
    And if the Basal is split into 2 doses, you can also tackle the dawn phenomena.
    Dr. Bernstein truly hits the nail on the head.

      I am a great fan of Bernstein's work but as with anything in type 1 it has to be personalized and we have lost sight of this in type 1 & this is worrying. Whatever brings a type 1 into excellent control should be what they do not following any diet or approach without question. I use his approach as a framework and he also in his own way advocates this which is why i respect him. There are those who will do what he suggests even if it doesn't work but don't sway from his 'diet'. Type 1 is like a new discovery everyday-eat a specific food and test what happens and then make your decision to eat it or not based on what happens. I have some very wacky ones such as I can drink milk but cant eat natural yogurt -in theory this shouldn't be the case but I have always said type 1 and theory aren't the best of buddies lol. Hope you continue to do well using this approach and stay well in the future. best wishes

    Hi Tyler - I used to have blood sugar that was extremely difficult to control. In fact when I first started on my CGM in 2008, I was only on track 15% of the time. Now with a no carb diet and the 780G by Medtronic, my blood sugar is 100% on track most days. If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it. I take 2 units for carb free meals, because I would still have high blood sugar otherwise (unless I'm being super active). I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 9, and now I'm 40 years old. :-) The new algorithm that Medtronic has just come up with is the only thing that has ever worked for me.     Your liver produces some glucose though, that’s why there is basal insulin. Maybe your body takes care of it from leftover cells. Just so you know in case of anything in future

    The body is still using up it’s glycogen stores on the first day isnit it? It is possible that a type 1 diabetic can keep going with this and get into ketosis or is that not possible without insulin? If someone is running on ketones instead of glycogen do they need insulin? Sorry I’m ignorant on this subject also is ketosis dangerous with diabetes.

    Even animal protein needs insulin to be absorbed by the cells, not as much as carbs, but it's still needed.

      Yes but after this your body is still in ketosis(burning fat for fuel/bodyfat/nutrition fat, which we never runs out of, now compare that to carbs then you know carbs is bad.) So the raise in insulin for meat is so much benefits Vs carbs. Good luck

      I'm a type one diabetic, I've been eating a ketogenic mostly carnivore diet. And I have been eating this way for over 15months. My triglycerides are very good 38. Good HDL and LDL are great. My A1C is 5.1 %. My blood sugar levels are between 80 to the 90's... I would recommend you look a little more into it and don't believe in what these organizations tell you. You will ended up sicker or fatter.

      @@gallettiguitartones Agreed! My cholesterol got completely fixed when I removed sugar and starch products from my diet. Every blood test improved eating keto. I'm not hungry, it all tastes delicious. I am not 100% reliant on medication and my weight gradually decreased. I have maintained muscle mass and have more energy. Some people just need to accept that they have gotten brainwashed into thinking something about health, rather than just trying something different. Btw, I have been eating no carb for nearly 2 years so...

    I did alternate day fasting as a type 1 diabetic. With the freestyle libre to monitor my levels. Ive never had such level Bloodsugar levels in my life, but i would very slowly trend upwards. Not sure if that was due to my long lasting wearing off or not. Cool video though man! Skol Wolves!

    This is inspiring but as an insulin dependent type 1 diabetic I think I'll keep taking my insulin since my pancreas is basically dead and won't produce shit no more lmao. I'd say use this experiment to more teach other diabetics to be healthier in general and make it so they don't require insulin as much but to stop all together can have serious side effects,especially in my case. I'd say follow everything you said here but still monitor and take insulin to anyone else reading this. Your video brings me much positivity,I'm glad there's channel's like this out there.

    A Brisk 1 and 1/2 Mile Walk will lower a blood sugar 75 to a hundred points and would have been ideal after that breakfast. I sometimes have had twice the amount of bacon as well as a couple cups of Starbucks and three eggs and then walked a mile and a half to 2 mi and get home to check my blood sugar and find that it has dropped 75 to a hundred points. This is just food for thought no pun intended😉

    We need more info of what you did during the day. Its more than just food. Stress, athletics, etc. Keep doing this for two weeks for a true experiment. A slow walk usually brings it down.

    ive been doing a low carb diet for around six months (as a diabetic) and i found it really effective. i would recomend going on an aip diet first because that regulated my sugars between 3-8 mmol. after that i went on the low carb one and i have completely stopped insulin.

    I've had diabetes for 25 years and was diagnosed as a type 2 so I went low carb diet with good results and great sugars just to be hospitalized for diabetic ketosis. That's how I found out I was really a type 1 diabetic. You just have to be really careful with these experiments. The glucose meter isn't telling you everything you need to know.

      Sounds like you have LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) otherwise known as type 1.5. I am in the same boat. Diagnosed with type 2 but I eventually stopped responding/had bad reactions to oral meds and non-insulin injectables. I am now dependent on insulin. Of course my Dr and I have found out that I am manufacturer and type specific for Novolin 70/30. All other insulin doesn't work as well or I react to them.

    T1D for 16 years. Even if you eat no carbs, your body still needs insulin. There's a thing called a basal rate. It's where you get a certain amount of insulin given in very small doses throughout the day for pumps, or taken in one shot on long acting insulin. It helps keep your blood sugar from going up since anything and everything can effect it

    Okay so, your theorie that you don't need insulin when you don't eat carbs is obv. not true.
    You need your basal insulin no matter how many carbs you eat.
    You know, fat and protein also increase your blood sugar levels but not as much as carbs do.
    when you eat 0 carbs for a longer period, you probably need to decrease your basal insulin because your insulin sensitivity changes.

    Type 2 diabetes is remittable with a strict ketogenic diet ...about 3 months on carnivore puts type 2 into remission .Type 1 can be put about 80% into remission ,on a strict keto diet .

    Blood sugars will stay steady but if its steadily over 200 that’s not really good. Even when I do not eat carbs I still have to take a couple units of insulin to insure that my sugars move in the right direction.

    You should not eat anything before bed just a little bit milk just to feel fuller.and skip breakfast and have it for lunch.that way you will eventually have lowerwaking levels.add warm water before amd after meals

      @@TylerSpeers use a standing order before bed and reduce as you go off the carbs.from seing those numbers i would suggest starting 10 units humilin N and 6 regular before bed.make sure to drink alot of water and incorporate FULL body workout to deplete maximum amount of sugars in as many muscle groups as possible.concentrate on hydration and bloodflow before breakfast and have the jog before or after dinner

    That much amount of blood sugar in your blood will start to damage the body tissues. Only taking lomg acting insulin won't help you. Long acting insulin like lantus doesn't drop your blood sugar like regular insulin. Lantus simply works by stopping your liver or fat storage to release glucose in your blood.

    Protein raises insulin and once you are fat adapted, fats raise insulin as well. I’m finding that the only way to help my metabolism is with a 6:18 intermittent fasting schedule.

    Interesting experiment. Do you think you have some "honeymoon" beta cell function after 4 years, since you stayed relatively stable? Glad you mentioned that people need to at least take their long-acting basal. And that's definitely true if you are doing lower carb long term. Protein raises my glucose like around 3 hours later, and veggies are usually raising within about 45 minutes. I just try to avoid all of the other carbs. And if I'm up over 115, I take some more basal and also do exercises till it drops down. Basal takes about 4 hours to kick in, but exercise -- specifically muscle-contracting exercises can lower glucose regardless of insulin; and muscle contractions combined with adequate insulin is like a multiplying factor. Science.

      Sometimes it is so strange how it all works. I think I'm past the honeymoon period, but my blood sugar can remain pretty constant since I run many miles each day. Exercise really is great for keeping constant or at least stable sugars!

    Love the concept of this video. But... I'm a mom, and those BG numbers made me cringe every time I saw them. Why did you not take a correction before you started the day?? My 15yo T1D, stays super stable without bolus insulin when he keeps his carbs low, so I love the message you are spreading!

    T1d here, fats and protein both metabolize into glucose eventually. With fat I generally use a 1/2 bolus extended over 2 hours starting 1 hour after consumption for fats. With fast absorbing protein like whey it is a 1/2 bolus of the protein amount the same time I would bolus for carbs. For something lean like chicken it leans more to 1/3 bolus over an hour after an hour. I use a omnipod, dexcom, and reily link loop, last a1c was 5.8.

    I don’t really recommend doing this yeah once in awhile won’t hurt but you can try and cut down to maybe 75 to 80 carbs a meal also cutting out breads will help lower carbs too

    I think you need to commit to absolutely no carbs. You're not quite doing zero carb...
    I would literally just eat grass-fed beef and liver and water for a day while monitoring blood sugar and see what happens.
    Also try a day of fasting and examine how the blood sugar changes.

    When i get caught with no insulin, like lets say at work, ( I do MDI) I will use water to drop my blood sugar if i allow it to go to high. A good 3 water bottles of water can drop it 100 points for me.

    I'm sure your intention was good but your title is misleading saying you took no insulin. You only mention it very quickly at the end that you did in fact take Basel insulin in the background. I've t1 30 years and a 10yr old with t1 and these kind of videos worry me as a mother that they may be seen by young or people with little tyoe 1 diabetes education and they would end up in ketoacidosis 😢

    I eat that breakfast every single day with an avocado. As for lunch a regular salad (lettuce, spinach, onion, tomato, cucumber with oregano and black pepper with olive oil and white wine vinegar.) Sometimes I have my salad with boar's head turkey and white American cheese. I don't eat anything for dinner. It's worked for me. Still have to take my shots though so that sucks.

      I'm a TD1, I still take 3u for 2 eggs, 2 sausage & 1/4 avocado breakfast- essentially zero carbs. That is why carb counting does not work for a Type 1.

    be careful man, consistently being at 200 or 250 blood sugar is hard on your heart and kidneys,
    you legit have continous dangerously high blood pressure in the 150's or 160's with blood sugar this high ....
    have you kept going no on short term insulin and
    is your blood sugar down to the 100's range now?

    I've been experimenting with low carb meals recently. Low carb has never worked for me before, but I am trying to reduce. I find when I do a fully no-carb meal, my blood sugar goes much higher. If I eat around 15 crams of carbs per meal, it stays much steadier.

    You were probably only barely able to "pass" that test because you had only had type 1 for 4 years. You probably still produce a bit of your own insulin still. I've had it for 16 years now and eat low carb (max 30 grams a day), but my blood sugar starts rising only 30 minutes after not getting any insulin from my pump (I only use fast acting Fiasp) during fasting. Insulin has a counter-regulatory effect to the release of glucagon, which makes the body stop producing glucose from glycogen. That means without insulin, you will go into a negative feedback loop, where low insulin makes your body release more sugar from its stores, which blunts the effect of the little insulin you have, causing more sugar to be released and so on.
    You will die without insulin, so please don't try this. Also, that is extremely high blood sugar you had throughout the day - it will make you dehydrated, which is a serious complication of high blood sugars.

    Please be very careful!!! 200+ is bad! Sugar need to be around 70-140. 200+ and ketone if you do paleo. Can easily take you to DKA.

    Protein ( your bacon) has a glycemic index. So there is a sugar being metabolized. I dont eat carbs well almost none yes my sugar is way better but you still need somthing to burn so you don't go into ketosis

    10g of protein act like 6g of carbs. The ratio is 60%. But obviously the protein is a lot slower to break down than carbs. So in reality you could get away with using just using basal insulin. 220 and 265 are too high! Anything over 180 is certainly not good.
