There are singers and then theres Brandy. She has an excellent musical ear. Her ability to harmonize with herself effortlessly shows she knows what she’s doing. I expected nothing less from her.
Or Ironically to Black Americans, with the exception of making sure he included words in the anthem to reflect where he felt a Black American's place should be within the society. I'm sure he's spinning in his grave with the knowledge a Black person is singing his words. LOL
I loved her performance and I love your analysis of it. I'm actually a stan (since I heard the Full Moon album in high school lol) so I know her voice very well and I agree with everything you said. Brandy can sing pretty high but I see why she tries not to be up there too much as far as protecting her voice. Rodney Jerkins always pushed her so hard in the studio to where she never wanted to perform some of those songs live in the original key lol. Like you said, it's risky. And at the end of the day Brandy places notes, runs, layers, and harmonies so well that she doesn't have to rely on high belts to wow the audience.
When I saw the thumbnail, I was instantly intrigued. Love your commentary! I think Brandy is one of the best vocalists ever, and I really enjoyed her rendition of the National Anthem. I agree that she found a perfect key to sing it in, and she rocked it! She didn't oversing either. It was such a sweet spot. I suspect that it will be remembered as one of the best performances of the National Anthem.
Whitney Houston version will always be my favorite but brandy did good .. yes you have to chose a key that works with your voice because you don’t want to strain your voice.
Don't compare whitney Houston and Brandy when it comes to singing please. Especially this powerful the national anthem. Whitney was a singer and vocal and the voice where little Brandy Norwood is mostly known for Moesha and a dancer on stage. There's no comparison between damn two. Britney Spears....Janet jackson......Monica......Brandy.....Mary J Blige can compare.
@@camprich6768 nope don't go there, Whitney would have been proud of her, they were very good friends a godmother to Brandy and a coach. Dont infuse ur sad life with elitists please for God's sake

Brandy was truly in her own lane, in her rendition of the National Anthem. I think she exercised her vocal ability in true perfection!! Bravo! Brandy ⭐💯⭐❤️💯⭐🎙️👸🏽💯⭐❤️💯⭐
I appreciate this video . But you have to do a longer video in more details please ! I was waiting to hear you talk about what you think did and did not work and what stood out the most to you. This rendition can really go in so much depth , I think it was phenomenal but want to hear your likings of this rendition.
Same thing I said 😂. I was waiting for him to highlight certain things like he usually does not sure why he didn’t this video . Did you really like it like you say you do Gerald ? Lol
Have you heard her song, Gonna Find My Love? It’s from the “Human” era. Supposedly that’s her highest belt on record. It’s pretty high up there. That’s to say, she’s got the range (not to mention that vid of her playing with her falsetto and potential whistle range).
it’s a F#5 , she sang the same note in “Beggin & Pleading” (2016) , but yes she does have range ! I love seeing her explore different parts of her voice
I also think often a singer can be comfortable in their head voice but it doesn't mean that their voice still isn't of a lower timbre and voice types. Like most baritones for instance have great head voices. Mezzo sopranos as well. Look at the difference between Chloe Bailey's voice versus her sister Halle, Chloe has a freeness in her head voice and comfortability, and she's been able to sing up to F#6 in head voice and falsetto. It doesn't take away the fact that if she tried to sing a song like Mariah Carey's "Fly Like A Bird" she'd struggle a lot. I also think that one of the discrepancies with voice types is that they were really made for classical music and not mainstream pop music, R&B. Opera singers sing in completely different way than what the singers that we listen to sing. They're not belters.
Veryyyyyy good assessment of a vocalist’s voice and how a song should be approached. THIS is what i encourage singers to look out at! The checklist!!!! Solid job, bruh!
I just know I've loved Bran from the beginning and got to see her very first tour with Babyface and Boyz II Men. Hoping to have an opportunity to see her again, mature, with a grown child of her own and having experienced life! 🙏🏾🥰
This is why people (specifically those who are trained in vocal pedagogy) have suggested that the National Anthem should be something like God Bless America or My Country Tis Of Thee, something a little more singable for the average person. There was actually an article written in the early or mid-1900s that talked about the challenge of the National anthem for singers.
I think it's simple. But, before I even hear your thoughts, I'd say she wisely chose the lowest key she could have that didn't take her beyond her lowest comfortable singing note, which also prevented the song from going uncomfortably high in her upper register because The Star Spangler can get real high real quick if you start too high because it naturally covers and octave and a half just to sing it as written. Now what you think?
What you have described, in 9 minutes, is a lack of confidence in one’s voice. I have been following Brandy for 28 years which means that I thoroughly expected her to sing the SSB in a lower key bc that’s what she has done since 1999 - prior to that it was in the original key. Since I’ve been following her so long, I’m also thoroughly aware that she can sing SSB in the original key without problems. She just chooses not to (partly out of fear).
@@nopebih Did you see the part where I said she can still sing it in the original key? Also, did you see the part where I said this started four years after her debut?
@@nopebihThe only way your statement has relevance is if I would’ve indicated that I expected her voice to sound the same as it did during childhood, but I didn’t say that. Just say you don’t understand critique and go.
@@Gatsbyesque Well clearly you can’t understand your own statements bc why else would you mention how you’ve been “following her for 28 years…” ? For one, we don’t care and two, as I’ll reiterate, she’s a woman now. I didn’t even mention the the key.
She did amazing and glad Brandy knows how her voice is that’s why we call her the vocal Bible and knows what her strength and weaknesses are your video is amazing
I feel likey Brandy is a lyric mezzo soprano, or coloratura mezzo soprano. I think the thing about voice types that bothers me is the fact that the identification of who falls under what is so narrow. I don't believe everybody in the same voice type has the exact same everything. For instance I don't feel like everybody that's a mezzo soprano has the same volume output. I think that there are certain people under the same voice type that has the characteristics that would classify them as a voice type but they may have a distinction that may make them seem like another voice type such as brandy. After listening to Brandy seeing over the years, I do believe that Brandy is a type of mezzo soprano. There is a channel on here that did a video that clarifies each voice type, and talks about the differences between a mezzo soprano and a soprano. Mezzo can cover some of the same range of notes as a soprano, but the difference is the comfortability of being able to sing those notes. That shows and if they can sustain those notes, how much effort they have to put into hitting those notes, and sometimes the texture when they sing those notes.
she’s definitely a mezzo soprano .. i’ve been seeing comments on other channels claiming that she’s a soprano and i was like “are we listening to the same person?” lmao , but i’m going towards lyric mezzo.
I personally thought her performance was okay but could have been better. I actually thought maybe she was anxious for some reason or wasn't feeling well. People forget the human factor and how something like a light head cold or allergy can affect the voice. I do agree with almost everything in this video though, my criticisms of the performance are on different subjects (one of the biggest being her breathing, which drove me a bit crazy). I do think overall it was a good performance for some of the reasons you mentioned. I really like Brandy as a vocalist I just don't think this was her absolute best AND I dont think this song, at it's core, suits her talents. Also, I probably would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't heard about it in comparison to whitney. People shouldn't compare the two at all. Obviously Whitney is the highest bar AND they had a personal relationship/mentorship. So I was expecting to be completely blown away and instead was just left with "well, not bad👍🏾."
I would love if you could review my version at Madison Square Garden on my channel! I’m no Brandy but I held it down 😊 I def need to keep what you said about the chest voice in mind 😫
What if her choice was spiritual and not ego based, i.e. How good I sound? Whist if she said let spirit pick the key? Or not. But until you ask her, you are only speculating. Please, say that with me. Thank you.
The national anthem is hard for most to do! The reverb from mike and acoustics of a stadium makes it a difficult song to do! She is a contralto naturally, but has a great range! Loved your video

Hello from Barbados 🇧🇧 I definitely enjoyed Brandy's performance!!! She showcased her range beautifully and gave Whitney her flowers, too!
Yeah, before the song became our anthem, it was originally written as a poem. Francis Scott Key didn’t give a single thought to vowel placement, lol.
