I've been sailing since the age of 4 and have been a member of Hythe Sailing Club on Southampton Water for many years. Hence the interest in the major sailing events depicted here.
I'm also a board member at @sdrt and some of the videos on that channel were made by me as well.

Rolex Fastnet Race 2023 at Hurst Castle | Lively conditions, gusting Force 9.
Hundreds of yachts set off from Cowes in the 50th edition of the Fastnet Race which was first sailed in 1925 by seven boats.
The wind was already around force 6-7, gusting 8, when the multihulls went through the Hurst narrows and rose to 8 gusting 9 when the smaller yachts arrived. Coupled with a change in the tide direction, so having wind-over-tide, this resulted in some lively conditions after 3pm (8 minutes on the video).
These were tough conditions for the smaller boats and some can be seen returning to the Solent in the video. Pip Hare's 'Medallia' is also seen returning - whilst apparently having difficulty with a furler - but they were shortly able to head west once more.

Round the Island Race 2023 | 1100 boats passing Hurst Castle on their way out of the Solent
Переглядів 26 тис.Рік тому
This popular annual race around the Isle of Wight, England, regularly attracts over 1000 boats on the 50 nautical mile course. The video shows the yachts passing Hurst Castle and sailing close to the wind as they head for the narrow channel between the Needles Lighthouse and The Shingles, a long bank of pebbles of varying drying height. The race was first held in 1931 and today is a permanent f...
Round the Island Race 2022 | Around 1000 yachts passing Hurst Castle

This hugely popular race around the Isle of Wight, England, this year saw 1117 entries. The video shows the yachts passing Hurst Castle with a fairly strong wind from the south west to contend with. A strong westerly current was flowing and skippers would not want to be carried over parts of The Shingles, a long finger of pebbles of variable depth/drying height which stretches along the west si...

The Birdbox - the first chick fledges
Переглядів 393 роки тому
The first chick surveys the world for the first time and prepares to leave the birdbox. The birdbox is in Hampshire, UK and was built in 2000. Although originally sized for blackbirds, it has always been occupied by Great Tits and so the entrance was reduced in size accordingly.

@11.10..starboard!..haha
that is how i love to sail!!!! please take care of the sailors and of the boats
Trimarans are for little girls on fish ponds!😂
Can't believe it's 9 Bf. 7 maybe...?
8 minutes into the video, the sea state picks up considerably. The wind speed (gusting to 9, not average) was checked subsequently at weatherfile.com/location?loc_id=GBR00002
How many of the multihulls will encounter a wave large enough to invert them into their most stable position?
I don't suppose anyone could answer that.
great pics
Nice sailing, no big waves, is it a competition for old people ? ;) Ps ..I`m kidding ;)
Great video ... thank you for sharing this!
Remarkably flat seas if it really was gusting force nine. What was the wind direction & state of the tide?
The sea state picks up after 8 minutes into the video.

POL Oiler Fujmo? (15:25)
I like how British people are constantly pissed off by their weather conditions but still they don't want to show it.
Does all that footage exist uncut? I would love to see more of many of those boats. Any boat that sails comfortably and well in these conditions would be a great choice for an ocean-crossing family boat. Most boats can be rigged to sail with a smaller crew. The trend toward less overhang and wider stern might be fast downwind and make for an overall better race boat, but they're a beating (sorry) in conditions like these. The more "modern" the hull shape, the rougher they seem to be taking it. This is prime boat-shopping material, right here. I've been to Bermuda twice on a J boat and I will sail to Hawaii on a J105 next July. Someday soon, I hope cross these waters with my wife. She would not enjoy the ride most of these boats are getting today. And days like this happen out there. Something along the lines of a re-rigged 1970s Swan could be the way to go.
Yup, “Eve” Swan 65 making it look relatively easy. Large has advantage! But this video certainly shows how the conditions got worse for the smaller boats as the day went on.
Beautiful. How fast does the tide run out here? The running monohull at 17:00 doesn't seem to make any speed over ground at all.
On springs, the west-going tide can be as much as 4.5 knots.
magnifique . en France les organisateurs auraient annulé
flat hull+tall cabin= recipe for disaster
as we can see, the taller the freeboard and the flatter the hull, the less seaworthyness with banging and acceleration, both old canoe shape hulls and low freeboard flat reggata hulls do fine, and foils should be installed in all sailboats for stability
Happily, whilst it was blowing its nuts off that weekend, we were tucked up in Gosport Marina with access to the pub, a fab Chinese restaurant, shops and power. It was howling. The moral is to pick your weather window. I think I made a good choice.....
thank you !
Force 7 still hard
At what time is LUCKY? did you see it in this video?
That must be USA 2872... I'll have a look when I have a moment.
I've had a look but can't see it. There is a gap of a few minutes when Lucky might have gone through - I think it was raining heavily at the time and I had taken shelter!
"...rose to 8 gusting 9 when the smaller yachts arrived. Coupled with a change in the tide direction, so having wind-over-tide, this resulted in some lively conditions after 3pm (8 minutes on the video)" Skip to 8:00, a VO65 fills the screen...
80% of that skippers have no clue how to sail in that wind. Wrong trim, wrong boat handling, wrong everything.
Looks like everyone was having a marvelous time. I love weather like this.
me too, love heavy air.
Thank you for not adding music.
Great footage. Not sure it was gusting a force 9 though. Maybe 30-35 knots.
The wind speed was checked from the Hurst Castle sensor; weatherfile.com/location?loc_id=GBR00002
@@RodOrmston ok fair do’s, I’ll take that then - it’s me kitesurfing on the foil, was getting ragged around rather a lot by the time I got to Hurst, with a 9m kite, and it probably got windier over the following hour
Wow..just sitting here at a harbour waiting out a gale that is blowing through and happy not to be out there...watching this video reminds me of how much we love to sail. Every boat that competes in that race is a winner regardless of final place! Well done lads...now back to my coffee and brekky and more sailing videos! Mike 😊
It would help for the initiated to know the point of the race, where from/where to, how far, when it starts and when it ends ??
This webpage sums it all up, I think: www.rolexfastnetrace.com/en/follow/general-info/about-the-race-spectators
I'm not familiar with the geography at the location of this video. But I guess the seas (waves) are still quite moderate due to shelter from the Isle of Wight. I It must have been a very different (worse..) sight if this wind force still prevailed out around Fastnet with the whole of the Atlantic Ocean attacking the boats. Is there any video coverage from that region as well?
PlanetSail [ www.youtube.com/@PlanetSailOnline ] features interviews with some of the yacht crews, including their on-board footage.
Its not a race , but a struggle to get the boats and crew in save ! 😢; but definitely a good practice in storm sailing!!!
So, bit choppy then! Well done all
Fantastic footage ! An external look at what I experienced and saw from the deck at 15:30 s/y Fujimo ab POL14833. Thank You very much for this excellent souvenir :)
Thank you for the kind comments.
Interesting to see how some of the boats with less sail out are doing better.
Cool to see Imp there.
Fantastic video Rod! I took part in this challenging race and shot some video in the calmer moments. I would love to include some of your video footage with mine with your permission.
That's fine, suitably credited.

@RodOrmston : how to contact you privately ? we are one of the boat that participated and finished the race, thank you !
If you're logged in to UA-cam, you should be able to go through a Captcha sequence on the 'About' tab on my channel and then UA-cam will reveal an email address. For your channel, you don't appear to have a contact email set - I would have come through to you on that if you had.
What an incredible event! This looks like a life changing event. Love it! (And thanks for the great footage.)
It's on my list to sail that race one day. Hats off to all that have.
Super Film, wer hier segelt ob erster oder ob letzter ist, ist ein könner❤
Ich stimme sehr zu!
Super Film, wer hier segelt ob erster oder ob letzter ist, ist ein könner❤
I love this weather..
Great video, shows that those who had set up their boats for the conditions could manage OK. Good call by Race Committee to start on time. It is an Ocean Race.
Fantastic footage. Wish there were more big boats like there were last race.
2023-1925 = 98 years ago. My guess is there have been a few years when no race was held. Fascinating to see the variety of boats participating.
Yes, it was annual until 1931 and then became bi-annual, but then missed the war years.
Much more comfortable and probably faster on the boats with reduced sails especially small/storm jibs - the boat with their full size jib seem to be on the point of rounding up all the time.
Not sure what all the fuss was about? Conditions are not so bad as long as you sail within them
Chanan Dror < 17:37 (1 minute ago) Excellent video, thanks to the brave photographer. Also for the great sailors
Thanks for the kind comment!
