According to actual novel, live action one is correct version though. Animation made her blonde. About Red- or blonde-haired Vikings, Genetic research has shown that the Vikings in West Scandinavia, and therefore in Denmark, were mostly red-haired. However, in North Scandinavia, in the area around Stockholm, blonde hair was dominant.

Guess we'll just have to see how she does. We've heard this complaint so much now (Ariel, Elphaba, Mary Jane, Death in the Sandman, Annie, etc), that it's just expected. The companies and creatives expect it. They don't care. I don't need characters that were originally white to be black in order to relate to them. "Representation" is great, but like... I would have been fine if she was blonde and white. I'm also not gonna talk crap about the actor they chose until I see her performance. Otherwise I'd be giving an opinion of her casting based on shallow points.

Hvae yall ever thought she is just a fantastic actor and PLAYS astrid well, also she's mixed...and honestly looks like astrid. She has a round face and a small round nose. Yeah ok they didn't make her as blod and they definitely could have but that's ok. I'm not a huge fan of race swaping either but this is so pointlessahi think she is going to be amazing I've seen this girls acting before. but the movie looks fantastic and frankly any real HTTYD fan wouldn't care bc the soundtrack, setting, cgi, costumes, set, all looks so freaking good.

It's not about being historically accurate, it's about representing what it is you're creating by respecting the source material. And before people comment and say how the movie differs from the books, I get that, but race swapping a character people are farmiliar with is bad; for example, Jacob Keys in the Halo TV series, and look how that turned out. You don't copy something beloved by the fans and then act suprised when they get pissy. I tell you what, lets remake LOTR shall we, and race swap Aragorn into a black guy, and while we're at it, lets retcon Halo and turn the Masterchief into a hispanic female.. smh.

I dont feal included as a blonde blue eyed scandinavien, why should black and mixed people get to be included in a film thats partly about VIKINGS. Iget so sad because i used to see myself so much in Astrid when i was a kid.

Thank you for pointing this out. And frankly, the true racism comes from Hollywood itself, which refuses to do projects from the histories and mythologies of parts of the world other than Europe. They keep doing stories from Europe, and casting black people to pretend they're diverse. But true diversity would be to do stories from all over the world. If they want to do a live action story with black people, why not do a story from African culture; African mythology; African history? The reason is because they're, frankly, racist. But they want to pretend they are not by taking stories from Europe and just casting black actors; ignoring all the architecture, clothing, customs, and culture of other places.

This is the same kind of diversity pandering that we see in everything these days regardless of it makes sense to the story or not. The worst casting yet has been in The Rings Of Power. I have no problem with diverse/inclusive casting at all but it should service the story and fit within lore if there is any. It’ll be hilarious when Hollywood decides to move the wall and replace black characters with Asians, so when they do the eventual remake of Boys in the Hood, half the characters will just randomly be Chinese 😂

Let me ask you this, why does it matter? Is she a bad actor? Maybe their just trying to get good acting instead of staying true to the animation. I always say that it is impossible to take a character from animation to live action, unless you are already planning to make a live action film and you're basing the animation on a real life person. It is much easier to make an animation based on a live action film or show. Race swapping isn't the issue here. It's trying to make money off of an already established world by changing the design of the world itself. You can cast someone who looks like Astrid, but may not fit the role with line delivery.

Race swapping characters is disgusting. It's like saying hey look the character is better now that it's not that race we swapped from which feels extremely...racist. I won't be supporting this movie or any other movie that does this.

I was so super excited for this movie and then this happened. My 11 year old daughter is also mad about this swap. She love love love Astrid. And now she is no longer excited about the movie. I definitely sad and wont be seeing this movie.

I nominate Peyton List as Astrid on looks alone. She's almost frickin 1 to 1, and that's before hair and makeup styling for the film.

I could get on board with them casting that beautiful girl as Astrid if they made her Blonde. Put a wig on her, I say lol plus some contacts 🤗 not a bad choice, just not the choice we all wanted them to make. Like they did a great job with the dragons and choosing Hiccup so they should have been willing to give us some what of a lookalike for the other character. Food for thought, why can we just accept that these movies are meant to entertain families and being completely fictional, it matters more that they feel relatable to as many people as possible. So it is perfectly ok for Astrid or any character to change, in order to have the audience, specially children, see themselves in the characters.

Her father is White and her mother is half White, so Nico is actually more White than Black. Yet somehow, everyone is calling her Black. Make it make sense.

honestly, I like her, she does look like Astrid. She looks cool as a Viking woman. I don't see why ppl are super invested in how a character looks. She not Scandinavian, Scandinavia doesn't have dragons, and never had horns on their helmets, these are fantasy characters in a fantasy world with its own races and continents.

Imagine loving Charizard and they make a live action for that but they turn it into a Blastoise. Or Blue-Eyes White Dragon but they change it to Red-Eyes Black Dragon. Inclusion is ❤, isn't it?
