To add what you are saying, people have had emotional attachments to characters like GROGU or E.T. And can relate to them to some degree of what they are going through.

Can we please also talk about how it usually happens to the female characters? The male characters resemble their counterparts but not the female characters. Examples: Annie, Ariel, Astrid, Mary Jane (Spiderman), Sarah (The Last of Us, videogame) and as previously mentioned, Ann Bolan and Cleopatra If they want diversity so badly, why not actually use diverse material? If you want more "inclusivity," why not write a wider variety of stories? I mean, I don't know a single white person who would refuse to watch a great storyline with black or brown characters. People like historical/cultural variety & accuracy. And you're right; Freya Allen would have been excellent.

It’s quite true that in this quest for representation, we are losing sight and representation of amazing cultures around the world, for race-swapping and blind casting. Just because I’m not the same color as a character on screen, doesn’t mean I can’t relate to their problems. Now, I am a white (Irish, and Czech origins), young female. And this is my OBJECTIVE opinion. You don’t like it? Move on. And before you call me racist, ever. Single. Race. In. History. Has. Been. Discriminated. Against. (Including paler skin tones.) Imagine this. Disney announces a brand new, amazing Princess and the Frog live action. But then, a month later, the cast is revealed, only to find Tiana, the main role, is a white, Irish, red headed female actress. Immediately, people start rioting on the internet over this, on platforms like Reddit, UA-cam, etc. Tiana is ethnically diverse, as the first darker-skinned princess in Disney history. Changing her is so racist, evil, etc.!!!! She grew up with a hardworking father, and a loving grandmother, which I can relate to!!! In comparison to me, I live with my hardworking, pale skinned, 86 year old grandfather, whom I view as my father. He’s my role model, and I’m following in his steps because I love him. I also live with my Grandmother/mom, since my biological father was never in the picture (not by his own choice), and my mother isn’t the most responsible person. So there’s something I have in common with a fictionally, diverse character of a completely different ethnicity. Now, objectively, race-swapping a character with an unspecified ethnicity is perfectly fine. When racism and race-swapping becomes a problem is when you swap a character that is clearly identified as a specific ethnicity, such as here with Astrid. Don’t you dare give me the “But this is a fictional world, why does it matter? She isn’t based on a real ethnicity.” or “Dragons aren’t real, so why should we focus on historical accuracy?” It matters because Nordic/Scandinavian culture isn’t widely represented in modern media, unless you’re willing to go and read books and online articles about how it was. And, according to a comment in this post, someone further down said that Astrid was based on a real Viking, or a true Nordic tribe recorded in history. To answer the second question, no, dragons never really existed, but they are deeply rooted in myths and legends in many cultures. So arguably, you’re representing these stories any time you place a dragon in a TV Show, movie, or book. And history shows that VIKINGS, which the characters in this movie are based on/heavily inspired by, were small, isolated Nordic groups in a very cold climate. Their skin tone is based on their climate, not their desire to have a wider diversity (which, May I remind you, wasn’t relevant back then, unlike in our modern day.) In colder climates, scientifically proven, there is no need for melanin, as there is little sunlight, so no darker skin tones are produced, so Nordic people were very pale-skinned, as a result of the fact their climate provided no need for any darker colors, much less a suntan. Just look at Alaska today. In winter, they’re lucky to get more than five hours of sun per day. Not nearly enough to warrant a darker skin tone. Which leads to my final point. So many people throw around the word “racist”, but do we truly bother to find the real meaning of such a word, and use it wisely? No. And I’m not crying in agony over this. Just disappointed in modern day culture, which prioritizes ethnicity diversity over staying true to the original material. Such is this case. Leads to another issue. Movies/TV shows failure to stick to source material, such as books, or original movies, in the case of remakes. Such is the case with the original Willy Wonka, any Percy Jackson film, the Giver, the Outsiders, etc. But that’s the same issue at heart. Changing something that was widely loved and accepted in the original material, to simply appeal to the D.E.I policy (now revoked by our 47th president), or attempt to reach audiences already captured by the heart and lovable characters of the original. Look at recent remakes, that included race-swaps. Such as The Little Mermaid, or the Percy Jackson Shows/movies. They. All. TANKED. And Snow White isn’t doing great either. With the lead actress acting like she has no respect for history (as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was the first drawn/full length movie in history, and criticizing the whole “damsel in distress” stereotype. I think we can expect to see this same thing slightly happen with this new move action. Which is why I solemnly pray that the Selection film, now (supposedly) in production, sticks to the source material. I can only hope my favorite film doesn’t flop on its royal face. If anyone calls me racist, I encourage you to tell me why. I’d love to hear it. :)

She has gorgeous facial features and looks like an animated character. Honestly if they gave her blue contacts and blond hair, she would probably look like Astrid just fine. I appreciate how the director was looking for the spirit of the character. For example, I’m a major Disney musical fan and watching Emma Watson as Belle was devastating for me because I felt she was so miscast; she was white and had brown hair, but didn’t act, sound, and even look like Belle. I was surprised when Halle Bailey was chosen as Ariel, but I ended watching the movie five times because I loved it so much since she had the voice and spirit of Ariel. Yes, I would have liked to have seen a blue-eyed redhead as Ariel, but if she didn’t have her voice and spirit, the movie would have utterly sucked, no matter how much she looked like the animated character. Sometimes it’s hard to find both characteristics when casting. I just wish directors made a little more effort in making the actors who are race-swapped have some physical characteristics of the original like hair and eye color, since those can be done.

Yes this movie franchise is a fantasy BUT it's a fantasy based on an actual culture that being Scandinavian Viking culture which is as white as it gets so race swapping kills the fantasy of being in the viking time period and makes it seem more realistic as we see the world in current times. If this were a random fantasy world not based on any specific culture and lore like Dungeons and dragons then you can race swap all you want without killing the fantasy.

I agree. This is my review years ago: - DARK PASSAGE (directed by Delmer Daves) Here is the summary of this creative film.. We have one man who is the main character and has escaped from prison; we don't see his face for most of the film. One beautiful woman with impeccable character and intelligence who risks everything because she believes in justice. Another man who asks too many questions driving a car whose seats are draped with what appears to be outside patio furniture fabric. And while you never expect to see him again; he keeps popping up and then you forget about him and he pops up again, Huh? A taxi driver with the best goldfish story ever and he has a lot more to do with the plot than talk about goldfish! A musician who doesn't get to play one solitary note. And then another woman with a very unique character who keeps rubbing everyone the wrong way! Agnes Moorehead's portrayal of this savage beast is impeccable! Mix that with a generally slightly dim witted protagonist played exceptionally by Humphrey Bogart in a definitive role. Add great camera work, an intense power-play between the major players, formidable small roles of everyday people and you've got an outstanding piece of cinema! This is an original dark passage to love and an original film noir experience played out mostly in daylight scenes.

Not gonna lie. I don't trip off of Astrid recasting. Yeah little mermaid and Snow white you're really crazy, especially snow white but How to train your Dragon is Pure Fantasy. Plus its played by a mixed girl who looks white enough. Who says the vikings pilliaged a little more than gold.

Another one I HATED was Annabeth and Percy from Percy Jackson, Annabeth's big thing is that she usnt just some stupid dumb blonde, and has beautiful grey eyes and tanned skin. By race swapping her it erases one of her biggest traits in the books. And with Percy, well he looks like freakin Will! Percy has BLACK HAIR and SEA GREEN EYES, so they just wanted to take his iconic look away from him?!!?. I wanted to die when I saw it.

I don't know if movie studios does race swap as you call it for getting the white or black audience because I really don't care.if you really think of it much it makes you a racist. Now for this movie I think It doesn't matter if Astrid is white black or brown, it's the story line and acting that matters.now if studios made a Equalizer movie (Denzel Washington) remake with someone white then I would be pissed off. It was executed with intent to garner greater publicity, yet I contend that such measures were unnecessary. How to Train Your Dragon could have thrived on its own merits. I extend my gratitude for voicing support for those who might be unjustly labeled as racists or bigots due to their differing gender or skin color from this actress. By the way, I harbor no ill will towards Nico Parker; she appears to be a most agreeable individual. However, it would have been prudent for her not to pursue such a role in these times, when many Americans grow weary of the practice of race-swapping. Might DreamWorks consider revising her character in post-production?
