Carrickfergus
"Carrickfergus" is one of the most haunting Irish melodies performed by hundreds of major artists from Joan Baez to Loudon Wainwright, to the Chieftains, Dubliners and Van Morrison. [Ed Sheeran references it in "Galway Girl."]

You Can't Go Home Again

This was taken from the Adagio from Rachmaninov's 2nd Symphony. Recorded by the late great Chet Baker. Sergei composed it in 3 sharps but Chet plays it in 5 flats. A horrible key for guitarists! I went with 5 flats.

I'm a huge fan of the jazz/virtuoso pianist and top vocalist Diana Krall. She hails from Vancouver Island, Canada. I was actually born there! My mum brought me to Scotland when I was just a year old. I love her version of this great song!
Ain't Misbehavin

1929. Nearly a century ago, this song was the opening number for the musical "Connie's Hot Chocolates". [unfortunate title] It became the biggest hit of the era. Memorably performed by the great Fats Waller. Famously covered by Louis Armstrong and many others.

Had to wear my green T shirt for this!...One of many beautiful melodies from the island of Ireland.
Lucy [acoustic version]

An acoustic version of "Lucy". My song about "Australopithecus Afarensis". Our common ancestor's fossilized remains were found in Hadar, Ethiopia. She never knew she would become famous!

Love working with my pal [ex brother-in-law] Peter Fitzsimmons. This time he has come up with a brilliant song dedicated to the MMA fighters of Dagestan and their historical warrior spirit!
Take 5

When I was employed as guitarist/vocalist on cruise ships in the 80's/90's, most of the charts I encountered were in standard 4/4 .. 3/4..or maybe even pop 12/8 time. Occasionally though, I could be faced with some odd time signatures. For example 7/8 or 9/4, in the great Greek folkloric music. This tune in 5/4 time was recorded by the fabulous Dave Brubeck quartet and was really the benchmark ...
Rehearsal in Buenos Aires
Переглядів 902 місяці тому
On a rainy day in Buenos Aires in January 1989, since it was "stair rods" outside, we decided to have a rehearsal. As luck would have it... that day... Martin [bass] plonked his Ghetto Blaster in front of us... and pressed "Record" I think I've mentioned before that I used to work as a guitarist/vocalist on cruise ships... usually involved reading charts, and playing backing for cabaret singers...
5 years ago I played this medley in tribute to the fabulous Jimmy Webb. Songwriter extraordinaire!

Wonderful....
Thanks for that!
Awesome Performance....
thanks for that!
Pretty Les Paul you got there John. That would be a bitch to read for me. Nice playing and sound my friend!
Cheers for that pal! Appreciate it! ...Are you still posting?.. Not seen any of your stuff recently. Maybe just missed it? (The L.P. is a '74.). Aye.. Db! . The most horrible key for guitarists! Very uncomfortable.. I went for it tho cos that's the key Chet Baker chose. Fckn horn players! Actually Rachmaninov composed it in 3 sharps!..A major. Now that's a guitarist key!! 😀
@@johnrutherford3309 I've been playing mostly electric lately and I got bored with the acoustic groups on Facebook. Not much on supporting those that in my opinion shouldn't post until they get a bit better. And oddly enough, I don't find that those folks are looking to learn from more experienced people so.... I post on my own FB and also here on UA-cam.
@@StevevanVaisteenTheDrugstoreCo I know what you mean. It's a bit like they have a guitar hanging on the wall as an ornament.. which they occasionally pick up ..to play the same old tune over again. Then..the light bulb moment......I think I'll make a video!
Camp Encino next !
That was absolutely wonderful! Spare, smooth, and elegant. A very, very nice arrangement. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for that!
Sounds great John. I have the same thing with Canada, I was born there and my mother took me to the US when I was 2.
Cheers pal. Aye..we both must have that Canuk trait! If ye've got it... flaunt it! 😀

Great John. You should get a wee UA-cam trio, with you playing everything. Could be fun.
Great idea!👍 ....everything? 🤔 (at my age its difficult tae play anything!) 🙂
Cheers Gav. 👍
Nice one John! Love that old song.
Cheers Pal!

Cheers Pal! 👍🙏
WOW!
Absolutely beautiful uncle John, I could do with some pointers song writing and getting back to how i could play the guitar , hope you are well xx
Hi Nicole thanks so much...nice to hear from you! Hope you're well too. xx
Epic!. Great singing and guitar playing but most of all great song writing. I particularly like the held vocal notes over the modulating chords around a common tone. Needs a video if not a movie.
Thanks so much for that.. appreciate it! The original version is on my album " It's Only Me" Bandcamp/ Spotify etc.
мне понравилось..молодец..спасибо..сыграл бы медленно я бы тоже выучил..с ув....
Спасибо за этого приятеля!
Nice mix. Video and audio! Didn't these old cruise ships look so much nicer and boatier than the floating apartments they use nowadays!?
Cheers pal. Aye..totally. the Taras being a typical example! Hope all's good wi yersel! Rgds JR

Excelent musician!
Many Thanks for that!
Special rendition, really touching
Thanks for that!
Quality!!!
Thanks!
Nice sound. Your accordion playing? Nice sunburst.
Cheers Steve. No, it's just a keyboard with an accordion sound in Logic. Aye the guitar is a 1974 Gibson L.P. custom. I bought it new in that year. 👍
I thought the accordion sounded synthetic in a few spots, then it sounded authentic elsewhere. @@johnrutherford3309
Aye. It's a bit hit & miss. I usually play a guitar part into Logic & then convert it from guitar sound to whatever instrument. Or if its simple ( I'm not a pianist) I'll play it on a keyboard.
Yeah I know what you mean. I'm a rhythm piano player myself.@@johnrutherford3309
Sinking into simplicity of the expression.
Great rendition!
Many thanks Christopher!
8 1/2 minutes of perfection. Thank you. You never fail to impress me with your perfect balance of tasteful vocals, guitar playing and sound and video production.
Many thanks for that! ...never sure if anyone's out there watching. Appreciate it!
very very good.lot of feeling and passion
Thank you!
Nice walking bass style...
Cheers Steve!
Brother, beautiful rendition! If Tim Hardin would ever have recorded a version it would sound close to yours. Thank you, my friend.
Many thanks Pal. Appreciate it!
I love it
Thanks Brigid! Have a Kool Yule!
The multifaceted musician. Sounds great John!
Ha.. cheers for that Steve! Have a Kool Yule!

That's great John. You're such a fine guitar player
Thanks for that John! so are you! Hope all's good with ye! Was great tp play with you pal. Remember Bing sings.... but Walt disnae!!
What an amazing recording of that song! The footsteps, the laughter, the train - I have never heard a more interesting performance of one of my favorite movie themes. This beautiful voice and guitar playing blend so naturally, yet so subtly and with such sophistication. Thanks a lot! 👍🙏
Thanks so much for your kind comments. Appreciate it.
Very good acoustic version, good voice, congratulations.
Many thanks for that!
I aways liked this song. Brilliant playing and singing as everJohn, do you still play your Gibson?
Thanks for that... Aye I do play it occasionally on recordings...(not live though.. its far too heavy now!). Actually just used it recording another of Pete Fitzsimmons songs. It'll be posted up soon. (kinda country/rock feel?) Keeps an auld guy busy 🙂 It'll be posted soon
@@johnrutherford3309 I'll look out for it 👍
Cheers. I also used it on Pete's last release; "The Shadow" ua-cam.com/video/mHO4Q1I6iQM/v-deo.html
