"The Lea Rig"

A poor Scottish tenant farmer serenades his "Jo" [Sweetheart]
There are 3 languages in Scotland. 1."Gaelic" [pronounced "Gallic"]. This was the main language of the whole of Scotland in medieval times. Today however it's mainly spoken only in the Highlands.
2. "Scots" A Germanic/Scandinavian language that took hold in lowland Scotland.
3. "English" A Germanic language that took hold in England, and also Scotland because of English invasion.
Robert Burns wrote predominantly in number 2...[but was also great in 3.]

The hunter lo'es the morning sun;
To rouse the mountain deer, my jo;
At noon the fisher seeks the glen
Adown the burn tae steer, my jo:
Gie me the hour o' gloamin' grey,
It maks ma hert sae cheery O,
To meet thee on the lea-rig,
My ain kind Dearie O.
