A Time For Tench
No species of fish in the UK signals the onset of warmer weather than the tench. Stocky and hard fighting, with teddy bear eyes and a paintbrush tail, tinca tinca holds a special place in the hearts of many anglers.

In 1934 Donald Leney stocked 50 fingering carp into a small farm pond. Over the next 50 years these fish, of the galacian strain, went on to dominate the uk carp scene and create the legacy of Redmire Pool and many of the anglers that fished there. Leney carp were stocked all over the country but in many instances the strain became diluted as angling clubs, in response to anglers demands, stock...

Bad luck but you can't win 'em all as they say. What a pity that that lake is under threat, its got some lovely fish in hasn't it?
A great setup, can you reuse those weights by putting them back on their wire. That's one advantage of shot, I always take mine off to use again next time. Another good one.
Just found this. You're very fortunate to have access to such a lovely lake. I love fishing with my old tackle, all purchased in the 1950s. I have a Spanish reed/ split cane match rod, a heavy Avon rod that's all split cane and another that's has a cane first section with split cane tops. Have also got a MkIV carp along with 3 Rapidex reels and another with no maker's name on. They're all beautiful pieces of kit and are just as good now as when I first got them 70 years ago.
Thanks Tony, You're quite right. It is a very special place. Sadly, as with so many waters, it is under threat from developers who want to turn the surrounding land into a holiday park. The controlling club have gone from having a long term lease to almost a month by month arrangement, so it seems a case of 'when' rather than 'if' fishing there will end. Your tackle collection sounds superb, right up my street, and it's great that you still use it.
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex What a shame, it'll obviously end up as just another commercial fishery. Thanks for replying.
This is such a lovely way of fishing, thank you for your video realy inspired to give the pin a go! What test curve is your rod?
Hi Jack, Absolutely, you should 👍 For the vast majority of my fishing, I use Avon style rods with test curves around the 1lb - 1lb 4oz mark. The rod in this video is an old Farlows Holdfast spinning rod of an unspecified t/c, although I've used it to land everything from minnows to mid-thirties 😅
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex Thats brillaint! Iv been fishing a while mainly method on a quiver tip and float but this looks so much fun and very challenging! What a beautiful carp too, loved your break down on different float approaches to scenarios as saves packing lots of kit. Do you use 6lb line for the majority of your fishing?...I'd be usless with a carp that big on 6lb line!
Great fishing and fish in difficult conditions. My scales don't use batteries, much better!
You're not wrong Tony. I'm strongly considering going back to a traditional spring balance/dial scales 👍🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex Good idea.
Lovely film about proper Fishing on a non artificial water, well done catching that lovely carp. I regularly use my cane rods and reels that I bought in the 1950s. They were always very expensive though even when new, I paid £5 for my roach/match rod in 1958 when I was earning just £3/2/6 (£3•12) per week!
Alex do you take any form of light shelter for the rain ? Trying to get some options . Even thinking of poncho tarp set up .
@gothicgorey I like to stay mobile and generally only fish for a few hours at a time, so just wear a lightweight waterproof smock (as per the video) rather than take any sort of shelter. That said, the Korum day shelter seems very popular, and most tackle companies do decent fishing umbrellas. I'm sure that your idea of a tarp style setup would work, i think that Wychwood might even do something along those lines 👍🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex Thanks ! I have found a shelter that’s got my interest the korum river brolly . Seems a versatile piece of kit that can be set up on uneven and flat ground. Also only weighing at 2.4kg and very compact. Currently favourite.
Nice video, nice tench
So don’t get the carp fascination, ugly fat things if you ask me, brilliant video all the same!! Tight lines
Lovely.
Another great vid
Thanks 👍🎣
Alex, no hair on the float rig, what are your thoughts on it, please? I see you do use it with the bolt rig however!
Hi Richard, I really only use the hair rig when the bait is too hard to put directly on the hook. I have never used it with a float set-up, although I will occasionally use bait bands if I'm fishing with a hard pellet as a hook bait. To be honest, it is more the fact that I like to minimise the number of knots (potential weak points) in my approach rather than anything against the hair rig itself, and that combined with the fact that I generally use soft hookbaits, means that I normally fish straight through to the hook 👍🎣🎣
Mate, what bad luck and such good angling right up to the end.
It just shows how good your float rig can be, as the line does not spook the fish. It seems a line lying across the bottom does, however. I float fish all the time now for big carp but understand sometimes you have to adapt to the fish themselves. Love you stuff mate.
I do much prefer the float or free-line approach 👍🎣🎣
Come back to the light Alex, stay away from the dark side, bolt rigs will only darken your soul! 😎😊😊
🤣 needs must, and all that..🎣🎣👍
Alex, was it maggots direct on the size 12 hook? Nice video and fish.😎
Thanks 👍 Yes, I tend to fish baits directly on the hook unless I'm fishing whole boilies or pellets🎣👍
Fantastic fishing. Thats how it should be done! Due to personal reasons I haven't been for about a year. My local canal is showing some fine Tench (and Common Bream) at the moment but I think another couple of weeks and it'll drop away some. Thanks for 20 minutes of peace and quiet by the water seeing a good angler catching fine fish.
Thank you for the kind words. Hopefully you will be able to get back out on the bank soon 👍🎣
Hope you can get on the bank soon pal
Hey bud, seen you fishing a bit recently great capture!
Thank you friend 👍🎣
Really enjoyed this video, thank you :)
Thank you 👍🎣
Do you find sweetcorn is a killer bait that big carp rarely refuse? You seem to fish it directly with no hair, correct?
It's certainly a very effective bait, although one of the reasons I favour it on this particular venue is that the water is very clear and in many cases I'm sight fishing for the carp and want a bait I can see as they take it, and yes you're correct, I fish it straight on the hook 👍🎣🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex Sadly while my waters are club, semi-wild, the water has poor visibility.
I do like bream, I think half the fun is the preparation, and you can relax, and feel the thump as you latch into a lump.
I must admit, they are a species that are growing on me. I'm hoping to find the time to put in some effort with the feeder rods for that elusive double...👍🎣
The moods of fishing, lovely light, this was perfect to enjoy after a hard days work, loveld it, love Perch, wow clonker, tight lines.
Thank you very much 👍🎣
Hey Alex have you got some duck tape for the geese lol, tight lines, and thank you for sharing with us.
😅 Not yet - they do enjoy making their presence known 😅
Wonderful video, love the trees, bend in the rod, magic time, loved this, doctor fish lol yep heard that one too, brilliant.
Thank you very much. It is a stunning venue 👍🎣
I didn't think you could fish in May??
Hi, The close season in the UK has not applied to stillwaters since 1995. It is still in place on rivers (15th Mar - 15th June). Obviously, it's never good practice to cast a line around spawning fish and most clubs, controlling bodies, and indeed anglers, will self impose a closed period on lakes and ponds around these times👍🎣🎣
I love how your videos capture the beauty of classic english waters and the magical essence of what makes this kind of angling so alluring and unique. Isaac Walton would be proud.
Kind words indeed, thank you 👍🎣
Idyllic peaceful spot with beautiful fish... fantastic sound in this video too. Lovely.
Thank you 👍🎣
How many nowadays appreciate the bend and feel and look of that rod? Kin stunning! The 30 million Mitchel 300's sold who taught anglers how to back wind when playing a fish. Choice would have been nice but. Respectfully yours the old fart.
Got my sub - lovely video 🎣
Thank you. Much appreciated and reciprocated 👍🎣
Know how you feel lol
I do miss my bottle top indicators, lovely video
Thank you. You can't beat a bottle top 👍🎣🎣
Interesting, in sweden they're called "sutare" but the historical nickname is "skomakare" meaning shoemaker, i have no idea why tho... -they are lovely fish❤
It's strange where these nicknames/myths come from. Thanks for sharing 👍 🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex i did some research on the subject, "sutor" means shoemaker in Latin, and apparently the sutare/tench have thick enough skin to make leather out off. So sutor turned in to sutare when meeting the swedish language I guess 🤔 😅
That location look absolutely perfect 🤌🏻 like one of those hard to find tranquil tench and crucian ponds. Must be somewhere down south. Haven’t found anything like this in north east 😅
It is a very special place, although sadly, like many venues in the southeast, under constant threat from developers 😕
What beautifull to hear when you are high as a kite
Only just found your channle. Great stuff an well earned sub. Keep it up. Love a bit of tench fishing. Its not got so complicated like the carp fishing.
Thank you, I appreciate the sub👍🎣
What a great video Alex, Your videos capture the true feeling of what angling is all about and the exciting thing about tench fishing is its visual, when you see the bubbles fizzing infront of you, your excitement goes up a level theres nothing like it. Thanks for sharing a woderful trip.
Thank you 👍 🎣
So relaxed and informative, love this centre pin method, thank you.
Most enjoyable.
Another great video, I watch them all! Fab camera work. I like your style. Thanks for uploading! Tight lines Alex!
Thanks Mike, I've just subbed to your channel as it appears that we're in a similar area of Sussex 👍🎣🎣
It is quite funny as over the last 40 years I would imagine I have caught 100s of Tench and yet can probably count on one hand the baby very small Tench I have seen or caught. I mean I love all species and sadly yes over the last 20 years carp fishing took over my life in general and it still does now I have moved here to Germany, but I love all species and the Tench will certainly remain up there with the most special, a very unique and beautiful species. Great video, really enjoyed it.
It's funny you should say that about baby Tench, the place I fish has a lot, all the best to you, and yes it's a lovely video he has made from the heart ❤
Where I fish at times you're plagued with small 4 to 5 inch fish. I've literally caught hundreds at a time. Still can't get used to fishing lakes in the close season.
@@tonycamplin8607 Hello Toni, that is such a good point, are you float fishing, im going to try this weekend with a new plan...to catch a fish lol, al the best mate, one month to go then river time.
Lovely tench 🫡
I had a go for tench last Sunday, fished the float, in 10ft of water, with the hookbait an inch over depth ( the whole tiny pond is that deep all round ) and I had them bubbling and fizzing over my ground bait and maggots and corn but I couldn’t buy a bite from them,I had not a single twitch on the waggler. 🤣
That sounds both frustrating and exhilarating in equal measure! Although the lake I'm fishing is nowhere near that depth, I have faced similar challenges, which is why I tend to open up my baiting pattern in an attempt to keep the fish moving for better bite indication 👍🎣🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex Yes that makes a lot of sense, and I was doing pretty much same really, plus the 10 ft depth helps as bait filters out the deeper it is, I was also hand throwing distance out which is another help in spreading too
Try 3 inch over depth.... ❤
Classic tactics on classic tactics are so satisfying to see and enjoy. Thanks. How was breakfast after that session?
Thanks Steve, Breakfast was all the better for a good morning's fishing 👍🎣🎣
Nice video Alex, they do scrap hard don’t they. Very relaxing watch. I am off tenchfishing tomorrow for hopefully another film for my channel. Tight Lines Russ 👍🐟🎣
Thanks Russ, good luck with your fishing and filming 👍🎣
I always enjoy watching your fishing sessions. I was very surprised that you didn't have any carp on the line this time 🙂
Thanks Mike, The carp were conspicuous by their absence, but I don't mind when the tench are feeding so well. 🎣🎣👍
What rod and reel combination were you using please?
Hi Steve , The rod is a Farlows Holdfast 9ft spinning rod. The reel is a Richard Carter 'Aerial Gem', although it differs from most of his Gem's in that it has a brass 'ladder style' line guide rather than the more typical bent wire one, as well as some other embellishments.
A great little film and a cracking fish!
Thank you 👍
Brillian video, my sort of fishing. You see people in their bivvies playing video games, three rods cast as far as they can. Everybody to their own, but this is way more exciting.
Thank you. I'm one first to admit that my style isn't always the most effective, but it's by far the most enjoyable 👍🎣🎣
Great video, that's my sort of fishing. I haven't the same rods and reels, but the sheer excitement of spotting, then catching close in is intoxicating. Also watched some of your other videos. One of you slipping down a bank. A few months ago I too slipped over, but unfortunately for me it was on the Wye, I was on my back, then watched in horror as a Barbel pulled in my favourite reel and new Barbel rod in a flooded river. But I carried on to catch a pb Barbel. Once again very good videos.
I'm sorry to hear about your rod, but congratulations on the new PB and thank you for the kind words 👍🎣
Great video, just getting into this more traditional tackle based fishing, yearning for my youth again when life was relaxed and tranquil I guess. Searching now for a nice Mk4 Walker to go with my JW Youngs Pin. It all started last year when I started to transition from my modern method feeder and ended up using a quill float on the lift method on a commercial, it was so much fun transporting me back to the 70s. Your videos have been an inspiration and I’m enjoying my fishing more than ever, cheers.
Thank you. There is something very rewarding in taking a 'less is more' approach, and I wish you every success in your search for a rod and your future fishing endeavours 👍🎣
