A Time For Tench

- No species of fish in the UK signals the onset of warmer weather than the tench. Stocky and hard fighting, with teddy bear eyes and a paintbrush tail, tinca tinca holds a special place in the hearts of many anglers.
As well as making occasional videos, I also write monthly articles for the Freshwater Informer, a free angling magazine available across the South East of England, as well as in digital form @ www.freshwaterinformer.com

looks like a really cozy spot too fish! peaceful and quiet with brilliant tench
Some cracking fish from a beautiful lake. Glad to learn that you were using sensible tackle. These days I go all modern and use 10lb braid straight through to the hook, it's extremely fine and will handle anything from roach to carp.
What beautifull to hear when you are high as a kite
Hello Mr Alex ! Popping in to say I'm really enjoying all your video reports ! Your mentioning stewed wheat takes me back to early 1960s when we would carefully cook it up until the husk just split to reveal the grains contents ! We would use it for summers Roach fishing on the Rivers Medway & Rother mainly but also for Bream & Tench generally ! The wheat was cooked either in a saucepan or if a small amount in a thermos flask by pouring boiling water in & leaving overnight ! Hemp seed prepared in a similar way ! Just remembered it had to be ' Canadian White Wheat ' ! I too also much prefer traditional cane rods, ( whole cane & built cane) , & centrepin reels !
Thanks for the kind words - and the timely post. I've finally got around to doing a couple of hours fishing for the first time in about three months, using a pin and cane to fish bread flake over stewed wheat. Hopefully, I'll get the video up in the next week or so 👍🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex Look forwards to viewing !
Nice video, nice tench
Another great vid
Thanks 👍🎣
I always enjoy watching your fishing sessions. I was very surprised that you didn't have any carp on the line this time 🙂
Thanks Mike,
The carp were conspicuous by their absence, but I don't mind when the tench are feeding so well. 🎣🎣👍
Idyllic peaceful spot with beautiful fish... fantastic sound in this video too. Lovely.
Thank you 👍🎣
Lovely tench 🫡
So relaxed and informative, love this centre pin method, thank you.
What a great video Alex,
Your videos capture the true feeling of what angling is all about and the exciting thing about tench fishing is its visual,
when you see the bubbles fizzing infront of you, your excitement goes up a level theres nothing like it.
Thanks for sharing a woderful trip.
Thank you 👍 🎣
It is quite funny as over the last 40 years I would imagine I have caught 100s of Tench and yet can probably count on one hand the baby very small Tench I have seen or caught. I mean I love all species and sadly yes over the last 20 years carp fishing took over my life in general and it still does now I have moved here to Germany, but I love all species and the Tench will certainly remain up there with the most special, a very unique and beautiful species. Great video, really enjoyed it.
It's funny you should say that about baby Tench, the place I fish has a lot, all the best to you, and yes it's a lovely video he has made from the heart ❤
Where I fish at times you're plagued with small 4 to 5 inch fish. I've literally caught hundreds at a time. Still can't get used to fishing lakes in the close season.
@@tonycamplin8607 Hello Toni, that is such a good point, are you float fishing, im going to try this weekend with a new plan...to catch a fish lol, al the best mate, one month to go then river time.
Wonderful video, love the trees, bend in the rod, magic time, loved this, doctor fish lol yep heard that one too, brilliant.
Thank you very much. It is a stunning venue 👍🎣
I had a go for tench last Sunday, fished the float, in 10ft of water, with the hookbait an inch over depth ( the whole tiny pond is that deep all round ) and I had them bubbling and fizzing over my ground bait and maggots and corn but I couldn’t buy a bite from them,I had not a single twitch on the waggler. 🤣
That sounds both frustrating and exhilarating in equal measure!
Although the lake I'm fishing is nowhere near that depth, I have faced similar challenges, which is why I tend to open up my baiting pattern in an attempt to keep the fish moving for better bite indication 👍🎣🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex
Yes that makes a lot of sense, and I was doing pretty much same really, plus the 10 ft depth helps as bait filters out the deeper it is, I was also hand throwing distance out which is another help in spreading too
Try 3 inch over depth.... ❤
Fantastic fishing. Thats how it should be done! Due to personal reasons I haven't been for about a year. My local canal is showing some fine Tench (and Common Bream) at the moment but I think another couple of weeks and it'll drop away some. Thanks for 20 minutes of peace and quiet by the water seeing a good angler catching fine fish.
Thank you for the kind words. Hopefully you will be able to get back out on the bank soon 👍🎣
Hope you can get on the bank soon pal
Classic tactics on classic tactics are so satisfying to see and enjoy. Thanks.
How was breakfast after that session?
Thanks Steve,
Breakfast was all the better for a good morning's fishing 👍🎣🎣
Really enjoyed this video, thank you :)
Thank you 👍🎣
Another great video, I watch them all! Fab camera work. I like your style. Thanks for uploading!
Tight lines Alex!
Thanks Mike,
I've just subbed to your channel as it appears that we're in a similar area of Sussex 👍🎣🎣
Nice video Alex, they do scrap hard don’t they. Very relaxing watch. I am off tenchfishing tomorrow for hopefully another film for my channel. Tight Lines Russ 👍🐟🎣
Thanks Russ, good luck with your fishing and filming 👍🎣
Only just found your channle. Great stuff an well earned sub. Keep it up. Love a bit of tench fishing. Its not got so complicated like the carp fishing.
Thank you, I appreciate the sub👍🎣
I do miss my bottle top indicators, lovely video
Thank you. You can't beat a bottle top 👍🎣🎣
That location look absolutely perfect 🤌🏻 like one of those hard to find tranquil tench and crucian ponds. Must be somewhere down south. Haven’t found anything like this in north east 😅
It is a very special place, although sadly, like many venues in the southeast, under constant threat from developers 😕
Got my sub - lovely video 🎣
Thank you. Much appreciated and reciprocated 👍🎣
Interesting, in sweden they're called "sutare" but the historical nickname is "skomakare" meaning shoemaker, i have no idea why tho...
-they are lovely fish❤
It's strange where these nicknames/myths come from. Thanks for sharing 👍 🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex i did some research on the subject, "sutor" means shoemaker in Latin, and apparently the sutare/tench have thick enough skin to make leather out off. So sutor turned in to sutare when meeting the swedish language I guess 🤔 😅
Me again Alex , hope your well . I am still struggling to find a rod. I have two lovely centrepins . Basically want a compact rod that will do close in on waters for tench and carp . Few saying look for spinning rods but there weights confuse me compared to test curve.
A curve ball would be a new modern 7ft rod that advanta do on angling direct thats 1.75lb test but don’t know if that’s too short mmm
It's a tough call. Personally, my motley collection of rods are between 9 - 11ft . The shorter rods are great for fishing in tighter spaces but the 11ft is far better at keeping fish out of near margin snags when you need to apply side strain.
I've heard good things about both korum rods and the Darent Valley range available from the Tackle Box at Dartford.
Spinning rods are a perfectly good option too, but it is better to visit a tackle shop and give them a wiggle as they are generally rated by casting weight rather than test curve.
Sorry to be more heip, but it's swings and roundabout really 👍🎣
Hey bud, seen you fishing a bit recently great capture!
Thank you friend 👍🎣
Hey Alex have you got some duck tape for the geese lol, tight lines, and thank you for sharing with us.
😅 Not yet - they do enjoy making their presence known 😅
Most enjoyable.
Alex do you take any form of light shelter for the rain ? Trying to get some options . Even thinking of poncho tarp set up .
@gothicgorey I like to stay mobile and generally only fish for a few hours at a time, so just wear a lightweight waterproof smock (as per the video) rather than take any sort of shelter. That said, the Korum day shelter seems very popular, and most tackle companies do decent fishing umbrellas. I'm sure that your idea of a tarp style setup would work, i think that Wychwood might even do something along those lines 👍🎣
@@InTheEdgeWithAlex Thanks !
I have found a shelter that’s got my interest the korum river brolly . Seems a versatile piece of kit that can be set up on uneven and flat ground.
Also only weighing at 2.4kg and very compact. Currently favourite.
I didn't think you could fish in May??
Hi,
The close season in the UK has not applied to stillwaters since 1995. It is still in place on rivers (15th Mar - 15th June). Obviously, it's never good practice to cast a line around spawning fish and most clubs, controlling bodies, and indeed anglers, will self impose a closed period on lakes and ponds around these times👍🎣🎣
