Everybody Looks Up To A Roofer
Приєднався 16 лис 2012
I am very fortunate to work for a very good roofing company in Hamilton, ont, canada.
I coordinate crews, take care of details, project manage, and do anything that needs to be done on the roof.
But my favorite thing above all is doing service and diagnostics. I love to learn how water works and finding ways to get to the root of problems.
If you have a leak I will find it.
Hopefully people can learn a few things from this channel.

Question: My chimney needs replacing, I've got a gas fireplace so not necessarily needed but still need something to vent. Is it cheaper to rebrick or knock down and seal it and vent from the side of the house?
Why the stupid music
Do I have to change the insulation if this happens. My home is 1 year old. Thank you!
If you pull the blockers out make sure you put them back at the edge of the ceiling on the exterior wall top plate. Then push or better yet blow insulation in places you may have left bare when pulling the blocker out. If left bare this will create "ghosting" on the ceiling on the interior of the home.
Yo why the fuck music is playing I can’t hear shit
Thanks for the help man, exactly what I needed to see!
This UA-cam video is misnamed. It refers to baffles. The vents are on the outside of the attic to allow cool air from the eaves to enter the attic. The baffles may improve the airflow.
Did he not just cut the venting in half?
Audio in attic is already hard to make out and adding music makes it even harder.
what's up with the sad background music? haha.. Are you not happy to be able to destroy this unfixable chimney that you probably gave so much of your free time trying to fix it and nothing have ever worked? Acdc would have been my background music lol
😂❤
Would be nice if he stuck to just removing the chimney on this video and explained what he was doing every step of the way.
A roofer who is willing to get inside an attic and do this important work is rare. Props to you!
Don't you need to clear the vent (not only taking out the batt), and staple the baffle in place? How do you know that you have proper airflow now?
My attic is completely dry, but bedroom ceiling below attic is leaking when it rains. I'm so confused. Any ideas?
Mine too
@Jones22_ I think I finally figured mine out. Rain was dripping in my roof vent and somehow working its way to the bedroom ceiling. Replaced vent and so far so good. Good luck
Great work. But, dust control is a legal and ethical responsibility
Yo jay its nick call me brother
Just remember that you want the best flowing ridge vent that you can get installed at the peak. Don't use the roll out (Brillo pad style) vent ridge as it is very restrictive and clogs with roof debris. The only good vent ridge has the baffle wings on each side. The best flowing ridge vent is still the original style aluminum filtervent ridge vent.
you're not stapling them?
nice job , and happy new year for your daughter buddy
holy crap there is no way i would ever stand on someones flimsy gutter, i have replaced so many and most the time you can pull them down with very little effort.
Wish you would have showed how to miter the 45s.
If that nail at 1:42 were higher up (in the common bond/tar strip), you think it would still leak or would be ok? Thanks.
The roofers who are responsible for the poor install should be responsible for the damage and the cost to fix it right imo. I think that would help mitigate a lot of these poor jobs done. Because then they would be legally/financially bound by it would be more cost effective to do the job right the first time. Great video tho, tryna learn how to find a potential leak I have as well n this video was helpful. Thanks.
I have been noticing more people use the baffles with the fold down piece that attaches to your top plate and covers the whole area. Is that a better setup, or does it depend on the insulation?
Do attic baffles block any radiant heat if you run them between your rafters, up towards the roof ridge vent? I have a bunch of extra baffles, so i was going to use them up in that manner if they blocked some of the roofs radiant heat.
I'm not too sure to be honest. But I would say "no" and that they only slow down the heat transfer
Thanks 😊 this is my first time doing this. 👍
My kind of guy. No elaborate safety bullshit
Great video, will those stay in place when there are high winds?
Thank you so much for posting! You video was a ton of help. I installed baffles in a similar way, but see no faint light coming in from them (even when the attic is pitch black and I shone a strong like at the soffit). Should I be seeing some faint light or do you think air is still getting through, even in the absence of light? Thank you!!
No protection of existing roof of falling bricks?
Nope. Roof was getting done in the same year.
Can you link the hammer you are using for the chimney removal?
what do you charge per foot to install?
Would this work on a common frame 2x6 rafter with a 2 - 2 1/2 inch heel height on a house built in the 1950's?
To be saved as a Christian: The bible says we cannot do anything to earn salvation. It is a gift from God. What we have to do is confess and turn away from our sins. after that we live holy in obedience to Jesus (through) faith. And Believe that Jesus died for ur sins and rose again the 3rd day. Once we see how serious sin is, and repent (turn) from it, and ask God for mercy and forgiveness, God will give us His Holy Spirit to dwell with us and help us overcome sin and live holy. No religion or church can save you.
Well, I suppose it’s better than it was, but that’s not a very good baffle install. You can’t even tell whether the baffles are anywhere near where the air can flow from the soffit vents. And the mix of fiberglass and blown-in insulation certainly didn’t get put back in properly.
What kind of hack work is this? When the asphalt shingles need to be replace those bs vents then fall off and lay on the insulation!
You are clueless stop with the goofy comments
He is right they should be stapled
Where can I get a shingle buddy and how much are they
I don't even know what you're doing because she got it on speed mode. So what the fuck are you doing
Where else would you nail the Lomanco vent? The top and bottom? It doesn't hold well unless you nail it all around, his nail pattern I copy for the vents, never knew after a long duration it would leak since I cut a channel around the vent for water
Holds just fine if you nail the top and use water proof grommet screws for bottom. The water channel you cut out is key as well. Makes a huge difference. I'd say it's okay to nail sides of vent if you cover nail with caulking
Caulking the base of the vent before you install will help it remain seated, then a nail on either side of the top flange and two at the very to keep it from slipping. We like to Ice/water shield the flange after this step to seal in those nails and help seal it down to the deck. Then secure the base with grommet screws.
Surely it is the lack of roof ventilation that is the problem though? A vapour barrier won't stop vapour coming up, unless you spend really big money they still let quite a lot of moisture through.
No harness for safety? Why?
These guys float on roofs its creepy
"Great day today eh? Don't get used to it, old man Winters coming back tomorrow to bite you right in the dick..." That's how you know, if your roofer talks like this, he's a real roofer
I have used pitch hopper on a 10/12 no problems
Well Ma’am, That was very informative.
I wonder if something like these would make that job easier ? ua-cam.com/video/4j2T1XnlOsA/v-deo.html
Sorry you got ripped off, but Karma does work.
Agree with most of the things in the video but the nails on the bottom of the flange is going to make it leak again. Even if you caulked it, having a nail pretty much directly below the water trough that you just cut out, is going to have water directly going towards the nail that has caulking overtop. The caulking is going to shrink and crack because its in direct sunlight, then water will just seap in.
Either use neoprene washered screws or only put a nail or two towards the middle of the flange and put some caulking on the underside of the flange on the sides
If you watch how I installed the vent you'll see that I actually used grommet screws on bottom. I just said it wrong when I was explaining. I always used screws
@@LetZbucK75 ah okay, just looked like they were flat head nails or something from what I thought I saw
if that is an easy Friday... I would hate to work a hard day you might have...i did this on a house i bought a year ago...i was able to get most of them opened up from the outside i used gutter downspouts it worked great...made the attic much cooler plus 2 turbine fans helped... good work sir
You used gutter downspouts for baffles? I too am going to try & do them from the outside
I made a similar installation in my attic, including the using fiberglass batting to keep the cellulose insulation away from the soffits under the eaves. My frustration was that the pink polystyrene is flimsy and too expensive for what is like the free containers that restaurants give you to carry food home. If I were doing it again, I'd buy 1-inch, 4'x8' expanded polystyrene sheets with reflective foil, cut them down to just wider than the spacing between the rafters so they bow out to make an air channel, and slide that into place. It would be sturdier, not cost that much more, and, since it is stiffer, easier to slip into place, particularly in the tight space under the eaves. Oh well, live and learn. Those pink things do work.
How does it work?
It actually works amazing. It's definitely a game changer. Especially for someone like me who has to work alone. It's like having a helping hand next to you.
