I always wanted to visit Lucknow but never got around to it. My parents were from Lucknow and their Urdu was excellent. My grandfather Yaganah Changezi was famous in his time.

मुस्लिम शासन काल में खुद को बड़े गर्व से आधा मुसलमान कहा करते थे, आज हिंदू हिंदू करने लगे? आज आधा मुसलमान कहलाने में फायदा नहीं इसलिए? मुस्लिम शासन में सर्वाधिक सरकारी नौकरी किया करते थे, गबन भी कर देते थे, पकड़े भी जाते थे, बचने हेतु मुसलमानों की हर प्रकार की "खिदमत" करते थे। इसीलिए आधा मुसलमान हो गए। गौमांस तो खाते ही थे। ब्राह्मणों ने इन्हें हिंदू नहीं माना था, इन्हें ब्रिटिश कोर्ट में जाना पड़ा। वैसे व्यास स्मृति, अध्याय ऐक, श्लोक क्रमांक दस ग्यारह बारह में कायस्थों को शूद्र कहा गया है।

Abdi sahib it is wonderful to learn so many things about Lucknow’s culture! Would love to know about a wedding rasm called Rahas Badhawa. I am a Bhatnagar Kayastha and I remember this name / term from the wedding of my elder sister nearly 60 years ago . Also, does it have any connection with the ‘ rahas’ of Nawab Wajid Ali sahib?
