Many people are intimidated by the apparent complexities of adventure racing. This video hopes to demystify what it's like to take part in a short 6hr race, here in the UK. Seriously, anyone can compete. In fact, it's much easier than doing a triathlon, a marathon, and arguably even easier than doing a 5k! The race shown here is an event that was held by www.questars.co.uk, well known in UK AR ...
Adventure Racing #26: How to Pack a Bike box
Переглядів 2,3 тис.2 роки тому
This episode covers how to pack a mountain bike into the regulation-sized bike box common in expedition racing and other long races. This can be quite an intimidating task for new adventure racers, but is actually pretty straight forward. Remember, you will need to practice the process to make it second nature, just like every other discipline in AR. You can get it down to just over 2 minutes (...

IF YOU'RE GOING TO TRAIN, TRAIN AGAINST OTHER TEAMS! 😁 Yes, you can stage your own adventure race! Whether it will be wildly successful or not is a different question, but this episode will cover how ARonAR hosted an informal training event for a bunch of teams for very little cost, and everyone had a stonking time getting sunburnt, trashed, exhausted and filthy. Adventure Racing #22: How To Train For Adventure Racing

This episode provides an example of the kinds of structured training programmes you might adopt for adventure racing, whether for short sprint races, 48hr events, or even full blown expedition races. It could also be a little eye opening for someone coming straight from triathlon, because ...
Adventure Racing #21: How To Take Care Of Your Feet

One of the most critical skills to master for adventure racing is how to keep your feet in tiptop shape. which also applies for marathons, ultra marathons and expeditions of all kinds. As you know, if your feet fail you, that probably means the end of your event. Here I outline the protocol I have followed successfully since 2009, which has kept blistering at bay and a grin on my feet. Yes, my ...

    I just discovered your channel and it seems like a very useful bunch of information. I was wondering if you'd recommend a specific mapboard or if you've made your own for the biking legs?

    • @ARonAR
      @ARonAR 4 місяці тому

      Thanks. In terms of map boards, I have used one from AR Navigation Supplies for more than a decade. It's done the job well. www.arnavsupplies.com/ Whichever one you buy, make sure it's easy to install/remove - no spanners/allen keys etc. Must be easy to adjust. Decathlon used to sell a decent one for a good price, but I think they are discontinued. Also Miry / Nordenmark / Orifix make great boards, but quite expensive. If you make one, it should be able to ROTATE - that's key.

      Yes, why not? 😁 I'm not saying it will improve your athletic performance but it can do wonders for the soul 😁 More than a few teams have been known to stop in a local watering hole during a hard expedition race for a pick me up. ALSO, in some races, having a shot of whisky or tequila is mandatory (thinking of the original Cowboy Tough, some South/Central American races, some European races).

    FRIGGIN PUMPED I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL! I’ve been wanting to AR since 1999 when I was 18 and crewed my mother in law race. I felt like there weren’t easy ways to find them when I started racing, so I moved to triathlon and IM instead. Then got into ultramarathons, then CrossFit, then hit Covid. Now I’m ready to do this. Please keep videos coming out. I have some map reading classes coming up and am going to volunteer at a local AR I found. Hoping to keep training and learning more. 👊🏼

    Hey @ARonAR what glue do you use for the corflute?

      I use carpet tape rather than glue. Super effective. Double sided stuff.

      @jamienash5263 7 місяців тому

      Good idea, thank you! Seems like a lot of stuff says it may not be suitable, but people seem to have success with them. Quite odd. Might give that a go though! Also, how did you make the creases in corflute when the creases are parallel to the corrogations (can't think of the right word)? I tried and it with the blunt side of a butter knife and I managed to puncture the surface once or twice accidentally.

    • @ARonAR
      @ARonAR 7 місяців тому

      @@jamienash5263 I use a steel straight edge / long ruler, then score the inside edge of the crease. You can even cut it all the way, really, and when bending the crease, the inside edge will bend in. What you *don't* want to do is score or cut the outside crease, because it weakens the join much more, pls creates a sharp edge. Make sure to use the steel straight edge against the crease when doing the bending. Test making the bends on some spare pieces of corflute first. You will definitely have offcuts from the sheets.

      How tight are adventure races with the dimenions generally? My box is about 31 wide and 82cm tall 😅 and I'm wondering if I would need to reduce it?

      @@jamienash5263 It depends more on airlines than on races. I can't see an RD rejecting your box for being that slightly out of spec, but airlines - who knows? 31cm ain't much, and 82cm probably won't be picked up..... 🤔

    Great video! As someone who's looking at getting into Adventure Racing, I appreciate all the information! Though a thought did cross my mind. When you talked about using powders during transition phases, you said you weren't a fan of talcum powder because it came off so quickly, especially when getting right back into a water stage. But coming from a background in rock climber, I wonder how well liquid chalk would work 🤔? It's lightweight, alcohol-based, so it applies itself with air/ evaporates excess water, and it's a favorite in my sport for deep water soloists because it lasts drastically longer than powdered chalk, still drys out whatever you apply it to, and is semi resistant to outside water. I could be wrong, and it still wouldn't be useful, but just a thought. Thanks again! Keep up the great work!

      @@TheColinShowGaming No worries, more coming down the pipe when I can squeeze it in 😁 My fav climbing is trad, but I've been doing it since the mid 80s so not too surprising. Great video. Thanks for making. Just on the vitamins: deficiency typically takes weeks or months; you're not going to get vitamin deficient over the course of a 7 days race.

    • @ARonAR
      @ARonAR 10 місяців тому

      Understood, though that is assuming one starts the race at 100%. As we know, the last 2 weeks buildup to a race can be more stressful than the race itself, plus overseas flights etc. So in starting the race not necessarily balanced, any imbalance is compounded by the race. And certain vitamins (like the Bs) need constant replenishment in the face of stress. Inflammation is a huge issue too (with many resorting to Ibuprofen to combat), tissue breakdown, susceptibility to infection rises sharply etc. Taking vitamins during a race limits the chance of cracks in our systems getting larger. 🙂 And then on a race like this one, GARLIC is a big factor in negating ticks and mosquitos. No jokes. Much easier as a supplement than trying to source it naturally en route. Old bush trick. 👍

    • @ARonAR
      @ARonAR Рік тому

      Saddle bag is the most popular - big enough for AR; panniers tend to be overkill, volume-wise, and saddle bags have less to catch on, easier to remove etc. Then top tube bags, frame bags, handlebar bags, in no particular order. Whichever bag is used, should be able to move contents easily, eg within a dry bag. No hard and fast rule, though. Whatever works for you 🙂👍

    Easy peasy! Looking forward to racing with my kids. It doesn’t necessarily have to be their thing. A gentle intro like this is a great way to find out!

    When you start seeing sleepmonsters do you pull up and actually sleep them off? Or do you keep going and they go away? Ive always had a restless sleep after being awake 24hrs - it feels like a dream alot as i fall into a deep REM sleep.

      Depends. Getting teammates to pull you along is most common, but eventually the team takes a 10-15 min rest to sort it out. Maybe longer rest on a longer race. 🙂
