Good parts for Lionels can be hard to come by. Especially for us in Canada. I have bought "parts" locomotives because sometimes its cheaper to buy the whole thing than one part. I switched out the shoe collector plate on my 1666 to a spring loaded roller type plate. It was easy once I found the new roller plate from someone selling them on eBay. It's not necessary to remove the paper collector plate to replace shoes. Just reach up under frame and push up the copper collector with a flate blade and the shoe will come out. I made a tool from an old table knife to do that but a small flat blade screw driver will work. Yes, your engine copper collector was bent out of shape on the one end. It would require straightening and I would remove it to do that. You can get replacement shoe plates and shoes too. I run my postwar trains on old tube track because they run best on it and it works with Magnetraction. Fastrack is not very good material for Magnetraction. Fastrack is apparently a type of steel that is not very magnetic. Good video.
I have a legacy 4-8-4. It began ticking when run. It's getting louder and louder. I added lubricant to the ' grease ports' which worked for 1 lap around the layout. The noise is back. It sounds like gears??
Thanks for watching. I can't help you with the legacy line. I don't own any or have any experience with them.
what would cause the motor to constantly run i bought it on market place.
Constantly run? Do you mean constantly in a certain direction? If so that means the e-unit needs attention. If it doesn't have a e-unit it has been wired to run in only one direction.
For engines, do gears get greased or oiled?
Hey thanks for watching. The common practice is to use grease for WORM gears like you would find on the motors of larger Berkshire Lionels (671, 681, 2020, 736, 726) and the diesels. Oil the gears of the other steam models. This is because the Berkshires and Diesels gears aren't readily accessible so the grease will last longer between maintenance. The gears that are more exposed can be lubricated with oil since they are accessible you can apply lubricant more frequently. That said, I personally GREASE all my gears because I don't get a chance to run all my locos as frequently so they sit dormant for longer periods (approx. 4-6 months in some cases). I find the grease holds up and and keeps everything free and moving. In short, if you are running the locos frequently and have access to the gears, oil is perfectly fine. Make sure they don't run dry. And make sure you oil the armature bearing and shaft too.
@ thank you, much appreciated!! I’ve been collecting and servicing for roughly 6.5 years now, still was unsure where to use what product. Thank you for a solid answer 👍
Between the two, i would use the old style. It can be made to look more like real track. The new track from Lionel is far to expensive.
The new is pricey but I always pick it up used. a quarter of the price and still works perfectly. The old tube stuff I use lately with my early prewar stuff (1920's - 30's). I find the rollers make a better contact with the tube track. Thanks for watching!
Went back and re-warched this video. I have a 2056 and 675 that ( no matter what I do) get the noise back shortly after cleaning and lubing. So this answered my question about the brush plate / cover possibly being worn. I'll have to inspect my engines to see if that's the case. I already tried the gear plate covers - replacements, soaking in oil, etc., and doesn't seem to do the trick. In your opinion, if neither work, is there a possibility that the armature is worn too much, where the gear plate and brush plate no longer hold it well enough? I know that's a big PIA job, so hoping not... On a side not, I picked up some Super Lube Synthetic grease, and it's fantastic for lubing!
If you've tried all that and nothing is working I would replace the brush plate. The wear may not be as obvious to the eyes. Especially if your eyes are 50+ yrs like mine! If theres slack it would be enough to cause problems and its only going to get worse if you don't address it. Get the proper brush plate for that motor, some seem like they can be swapped but from personal experience, they can't. Let me know how it goes!
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 thanks Warren! I'm going to see if the Train Tender has them!
Thanks good video. I just got a 736 and the smoke element was victimized by some previous owner trying to fix it. Anyway I will be putting in a new pellet element - easy, peasy. Great idea sandwiching the the white pacman wick with a lighter fiber wick. I will give this a try. I have not been satisfied just using one or the other. Thanks
Thank you for this video! After pulling my childhood set down from the attic after 17 years to share with my kids it wasn’t working. I followed along and now it’s running again!
@@andrewpalmgren9509 I am glad to hear this video helped and I hope you enjoy that set for many more years!
So glad I stumbled across this! I have 3 passenger cars I ordered to make into my Fantasy Line, and was wondering how to do this very thing.
This video happened because I ran into that problem too. Nothing online, no vids. Some on FB told me "just pry the top off with a screwdriver". Glad it helped and prevented a cracked shell/roof.
Gargraves sectional is awesome and quiet also. Gas rack is louder due to the hard plastic roadbed resounding like a hollow chamber and much more expensive.
Nice find . lets see the inside . get to work so we can see can't wait.
Good video. May 2018 hadn't run for 6 years, and after performing the maintenance, it performed great.
Thank you !!! Very helpful
I need to tell you how much you help me learn how to maintain my Lionel engines. Thank you.
Hey I need some help with a Lionel 244 It won't move but the light turns on please please please help
The Lionel 244 has the same motor setup as many other low end scout type locomotives. If you are getting a light with non motion forward or back that tells me immediately that the 2 direction eunit (lever sticking out of the top) is faulty. It could just be dirty or its broken. The 244 is a low end Lionel, the 2 position eunits in these are not very reliable as they have have a plastic piece which over time warps and prevents a proper electrical contact which completes a circuit, allowing the loco to move. See this video for a similar problem I had with an identical motor setup in this Lionel 247. Heres the link. ua-cam.com/video/scT7nFRa33Y/v-deo.html
Any additional things that should be done for a locomotive you’ve bought, and don’t know the history of the locomotive?
Thanks for checking out the videos. Here is a link to one of my vids that answers your question. ua-cam.com/video/ljgxQyOdYTI/v-deo.htmlsi=tyR9eD1UirdY1jZI
Can you tell me why lionel had two different part numbers for the brass drum contacts, if you know
Informational and a big help to me
The plunger pulls up when the coil is connected. Don't oil the plunger. One cause of sticky E units is dirt, oil and grease build up in the solenoid
Unusually to see the E unit drum missing.
I have a 726 here in NB that I need to get someone to look at. Do you work on other people's trains?
@@kirkwalsh1932 thanks for watching the video. Unfortunately I don't repair other people's trains.
Dude, that’s awesome 👏 I literally have both of those exact stations. Have never seen anyone else with them 😎
Cool! I have that same station
What gauge wire would you use that is connected to the trucks ?
I use 22ga. stranded. Not solid. Stranded wire allows for more flexibility and less likely to break at the solder joints after lots of use.
Hi Warren! Does any part of the armature shaft ever need lube? My tender sounds sorta dry with a slight chatter sound.
Yes the armature shaft does need a tiny bit of lube. Not so much that it gets on the copper bits of the armature itself. There should also be a small washer/bushing at the base of the shaft. I often take that off, oil it, wipe off the excess then put it back on. The chatter sounds like something is out of alignment, a broken blade, or something else obstructing the impeller.
I bought a 2037 at a Train Show for $20.00 untested. I came home and watched your video and followed your steps to disassemble and clean and change brushes, and now the locomotive runs like a dream. Your videos are extremely helpful.
@@WayneZybala What a great deal! I am so glad the video helped you get this classic Lionel back on the rails. You will enjoy that for decades to come!
Nice video . I wou!d remove the rivets and clean the entire chassis and motor . a good cleaning and lube and inspection. Thanks nice job . I use gun grease . its a lite grease and works great .
Warren you need a nut driver set, if you want to keep the price down you can get a cheap set from Menards. The only time I use an ajustable wrench is if the nuts are in their screw holes super tight because of rust and even then you might have to spray them first with a little Liquid Wrench to loosen them up. Thank You so much for the videos and keep them coming I love ❤ them all!!!!!!
Looks pretty nice to me
Great videos!!! I currently have the polar express train running on fastrack using the plug and play power terminal with wall plug in. I will be haveing a much longer track this year at Christmas running about 35ft. Can I just add an additional plug in terminal and far end of track to make my life easier. So hard trying to find an answer!!! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for watching! My Fast track is not the plug and play connection. I know of them but do not have enough knowledge to confidently answer your question. I have the section with the 2 wire leads that connect directly to my transformer (vintage Lionel KW). With that setup I can operate 2 loops, each about 8ft x 3ft. You may want to join some community boards like CS.trains.com and ask this question there.
@@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Awesome!!! Thank you so much!!
What is your method for cleaning the sides and especially the rail bottoms of the wheels ?
I use to use just the green scotchpad and "elbow grease", now I use a dremel and the brass wire brush accessory, medium speed to clean the wheels. I have found the clean wheels is important to properly ground the locomotive.
Cool! Those are great running engines. For some reason, Lionel went to the four-wheel trailing truck, instead of the two-wheel, when they added MagneTraction.. Probably because of cost, as the two-wheel truck had the cast side-frame. Your youngster had an astute observation about donuts. Quite funny, really. An excellent video, as always.
It is one of my best running and strongest pulling locomotives. Definitely a favorite in my fleet.
Is that a flyer Locomotive The track looks a little small to be Lionel O? Just asking, thanks good video I have a flyer coming in the mail.
Thanks for watching. Its Lionel. Just like it says in the title.
Well the screwdriver method snaped my screwdriver and the wheel so...
@shark_4049 The screwdriver and wheels snapped!? I've never heard of that happening before. We're the wheels JB welded on? Heck I've never snapped a screwdriver period.
@@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 well I should have specified that the wheel chiped.
Is there a trick to getting the eunit pressed back together so tightly? I’ve only rebuilt one and had to use some super glue on the tabs while keeping it compressed together. I’ve successfully used thread locker on loose press fit wheels. Thanks for these videos and all the effort it takes to put them together
@kplaird no trick its all pressure fit. I just use channel locks and squeeze. If one of the sides has been bent when initially being opened, that would need to be straightened before putting everything back together.
Didn't realize that there is another person named Warren. That's my first name but I never use it. I go by my middle name Russell which shortened is Rusty. Cheers from eastern TN
Would you have a link were the operating Instructions are for this locomotive ?
No I dont have any links for this locomotive. Are you having issues with yours?
I have 3 questions...The locomotive is running on a small track of 3.5 feet in diameter. The 1033 transformer is outputting 15.5. volts. Wheels and center contact plate are clean. Quick Track is brand new. 1) The Locomotive does not always maintain a constant speed throughout the circle. 2) When sounding the whistle the train slows down noticeability. 3) The transformer has to be turned 2/3 the way up to get the training moving at a reasonable speed. I appreciate any help !
@Robert-gi6kz Somewhere power is getting lost. Locomotives will slow down when the whistle is activated. That's not uncommon. The 1033 has 2 ways to hook up the input. U-A or U-B. It sounds like you are on U-A giving the higher output, which is good. You cleaned then pick up and wheels, what about the center rail of track. Free of dirt? Track is properly snapped together? Are you sure there's no shorts in the Loco wiring? That's the best I can do without having the locomotive in front of me.
THanks. Good info. Learning something every time.
Thanks for watching and I really appreciate you letting me know these videos are helpful. It means a lot to know people are finding value in them.
Thanks I needed some direction. I have one to rebuild .
