The most unsung era of toy train collecting: pre-war. What a lovely set. Imagine the kid who owned it, where he lived and who he let run this train. Makes running it so worthwhile.
Great find, Warren. I have the black version of the 1668 which I believe is a later version but I could be wrong. Always loved the mini streamlined/art deco locos they made during the prewar years.
This is the info I found on the 1668 2-6-2 setup: The 1668 six wheel locomotive, produced from 1937 until 1941. 1. 1668 (1937): 1668 number plates, Gunmetal Gray, six wheel motor mounted with vertical screw, through countersink hole between cab and Sand Domes, twelve spoke wheels, Lionel 027 name plate on motor, thick casting 2. 1668 (1937): 1668 number plates, Black, six wheel motor mounted with vertical screw, through countersink hole between cab and Sand Domes, twelve spoke wheels, Lionel 027 name plate on motor, thick casting. 3. 1668E (1937-1939): 1668E number plates, Gunmetal Gray, otherwise same as number one. 4. 1668E (1937-1939): 1668E number plates, Black, otherwise same as number two. 88 5. 1668E (1938): 1668E number plates, Gunmetal Gray body, only one number plate on left side, right side is smooth, without slots for number plate. 6. 1668 (1938-1939): 1668 number plates, Black, two holes in left side for two lateral screw mounting (from 1688 style body with type III motor.)
Thanks for watching. I only knew the 2-4-2 version, I had no idea a 2-6-2 existed. It is a solid "tank" of a cast. The tear down and test run is coming up soon. The whistle tender repair is a ways off but I'll get there!

Can't wait for the tear down and test run. I have the 2-4-2 version and it tends to wiggle waggle down the track. But solidly built.

You said the tender waas "Cast" it looks tin to me.
The tender shell is tin. The whistle box inside the shell is cast.
