Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting a Unique Leather Putter Cover
This video is a step by step process on how I am currently making custom, leather putter covers! These particular putter covers are designed for blade style putters, and are made with Hermann Oak full grain vegetable tanned leather. These patterns are all hand carved, hand tooled, and can be designed many different ways to customize the look.
I have also developed a pattern pack that is now available on my website for any leather crafters that want to use the same template I show in this video! The pattern pack is a digital download that will include the putter cover template and also 7 different tooling designs, all hand drawn by me! The patterns are designed on 8 1/2 X 14 inch paper, and will need to be printed on that size paper to receive the full benefit of the designs. See the links below for more info!

How to Use Bar Grounders for Leather Tooling
Переглядів 4,4 тис.28 днів тому
Bar Grounders are a tool option in leather carving/stamping that are used to fill in the background areas of a design. The impression that bar grounders leave in the leather is the look of tiny seed clusters. Bar grounders are a step up from other basic backgrounding tools used in the craft. They take precision and patience to accurately and consistently replicate quality results. To some, bar ...

This is my list of the top 10 tools I recommend for anyone asking about Barry King leather stamping tools. I use all of these hand tools very often, for almost all of my hand tooled floral patterns or other intricate leather carvings. I'm not saying that you need any of these specific tools to create good work. Its extremely important to develop your skills around the basics before investing he...

Raw footage of me working on a unique leather project in my shop. This is a highly un-edited video of what it is actually like while tooling a custom leather project. Long hours and lots of tapping. This particular item is the front panel of a custom notebook cover. I am using Hermann Oak full grain natural veg tan leather. I drew this design from scratch with an 8B pencil, directly onto the le...

You do GREAT work young man. Be confident you are excellent. I love your videos and you have a great personality. No need to denigrate yourself. Don’t point out every mistake.
Can you explain the bag you place on your tooling piece?
It’s just two pieces of leather sewn together and filled with metal BB’s. I use it as a weight to prevent the piece I’m working on from sliding around, or in some instances folding up on one side.
@ awesome! Thanks for the reply. Definitely going to be making this for myself.
Do you sell it internationally? I want to buy it from Bangladesh
Incredibly tasteful friend!
I’ve always found the problem with black a lot of the time is maintaining the definition appearance wise in your tooling after you dye and finish. Kudos to you man, that looks badass
What's the depth can you go on leather stamping?
It depends on the leather thickness, tools, and the look you are trying to get out of the design. You start to develop a feel for how hard to strike each tool as you gain experience. You obviously would not want to penetrate completely through the leather but some tools could easily do so.
Nice
Potatopeelin
this is terribly satisfying. I need to start making leather goods.
I noticed your yousinv blades that are similar to se wet shaving blades Cool tip they have razor sharpeners for wet shaving I think would work to save some money on bades for you
Very cool
Thank you!
I burst out laughing when the sanding segment came up. I can so relate. 😂😂 Hot lookin belt!
Appreciate it! I was working on a few belts at the same time, so all the dust on me was a bit dramatized for this video lol. But very accurate to how it always ends up!
Cheer~~~assorted tools, especially ones required for a mechanized process.😊
Nice work. From Spain🇪🇸
Should build yourself a pliable leather finger guard to keep from having to tape the finger.
I like that idea, thank you!
@@Girtyleathercono worries. I bet you could sell them too. I bet carpenters would appreciate a non-glove knuckle protection that doesn’t impact dexterity.
im trying to learn to do belts .what oz do you use on your belts in front and back?
Generally 9/10oz main body and 3/4oz liner
What leather do you recommend for lining the back?
I just use another piece of natural veg tan but I’ve seen people use all kinds of stuff honestly
Man, I wish I had that kind of space to work on my leather. I work out of a shed that has to hold all my other hobbies and stuff. You literally have enough room to sit in one spot and spin around. I would definitely build a bigger work table in the center of the room and definitely a bench setup along the entire wall where your "dirty table" is. It would make you more efficient and organized and probably more comfortable. You would also have room for more tools.😊
Please
Can u tell me the number of all the tools ur using?
If you check out the full length video I have over them, everything is listed in the description and the video covers it all in depth
@Girtyleatherco thank u
I've gotta ask, why aren't you using the polished side of your marble? Amazing work as always. I wish I'd get more custom belt orders instead of holsters. Is what it is. I'm booked solid for the holidays this year, kinda nice, kinda stressful lol. Hope you're pumping em out too
I’ve got the polished side covered with stickers and that was not the best idea lol. They got in the way more than I anticipated and I just haven’t taken the time to peel them off and clean it up. I’m still booked up with work but I ended up taking less “Christmas specific” orders than usual this year. I wanted to spend a little more time making videos and not be as stressed as I have been in the past with deadlines. It’s not financially smart lol but I honestly enjoy the process of trying to create content. These videos are my little side projects and I try to put as much as I can into them.
@Girtyleatherco I tried making a video on a snapping turtle tail inlaid holster. Seems I don't know what I'm doing with video. The lighting was all wrong, camera placement, angle... it just didn't come out like I was planning so it never got past me just recording the process haha. But I can take excellent pictures. Go figure. If I could do videos alongside my leather work, I would also cut back on orders to make videos. The exposure alone will pay for the lost orders.
which machine do you recomend to do pouches for construction work and belts. cobra class 26 or the.class 4
I don’t have much experience with that so it’s hard to say. I’d like to think the 26 would be fine unless you just needed a large throat on the machine to fit the item through. I sew two pieces of 9/10oz leather together on mine fairly often, so it’s strong enough for somewhat thicker material.
Nice neat work
Thank you!
Ive tattooed in chaingang for almost 7 years im gonna start doing this and see where it goes
what product did you use between dyeing and sealing the leather?
This video sound was very ecoeing you might need a better microphone.
This was one of my very first videos, only my second time talking on camera as well. I’ve been slowly learning and progressing as I can.
🔥👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I have tried so many different craftsman arts and this one hands down I’m struggling with. I do have a lot of beginners gear and I tried on a thin piece but wow how long you been doing this and where did you learn?
I’ve been tooling leather for coming up on 4 years now. Outside of a few UA-cam videos and some books, I’m all self taught. I’d like to take some classes one day, but I haven’t up to this point. I try to share my experiences as best as I can on my channel to help out some. There are many other great makers that teach and put on classes. Tons of books out there too.
Ethan eres un espectáculo tío , quiero una mentoria tuya es un sueño y lo quiero,
Can anyone advise why the guage used in this doesn’t read in leather ounces since that’s what a majority of us go by? This has never made sense to me
It measures both in ounces and mm, the outside number is oz and the red lines are mm.
What did you put in you pouch to give it weight?
It’s just two pieces of leather sewn together with metal BB’s inside
Awesome
Can I ask, are you self taught in tooling? Where can I learn how to tool like that? Adding dimension
I watched a few UA-cam videos when I first started and I’ve studied books but I’ve never taken any classes or anything, yet. I’d love to still. But I guess, mostly self-taught. There’s some great makers out there creating videos and providing in-person courses. It just takes a lot of time actually tooling to hone in all the skills get comfortable with it.
Bro said he cut his finger on the belt 🤣
Got the scars to prove it 😂
@ oh dag, I thought you were being facetious 😆
here's my tip with the dye. Always use a syringe or something to suck the dye out of the original bottle or dip straight into the bottle. When transfering to a smaller container you'll see that you can not simply pour the dye from one container to the next. This is with the Pro dye, at least. It will always hold on to that edge on the way out of the bottle. I don't know why but maybe something to do with the surface tension or viscosity.
Bro you good? You shaking like mad in the end
Prolly needs 🍸
I’ve just always been like that 😂 I’m sure the caffeine was hitting pretty hard too
@Girtyleatherco ohh okay as long as you all good take it easy , I also have sumn similar but mine is less
Hey there! Love your work! I have a question but it doesn’t pertain to this video but antique finish. Did you use an antique finish one time that wasn’t Fiebrings? I’ve used Fiebrings dark brown on basket weave before, but it gives it a dirtier look. Don’t get me wrong it still looks good but not as clean as your work. Any pointers on what to use on basket weave stamp? Thanks!
I’ve used other products before but all I use anymore is the Fiebings paste. Geometric patterns can be challenging to keep a perfectly clean look, especially on large scale layouts. Any little deviation on the burnish mark that the tool leaves from inconsistent striking pressure can alter the coloration some when antiquing. Since every little stamp is individual, it’s easier to spot any variances from one to another. The leather is never perfect either and any little imperfection on the hide can alter the color some as well. I’d recommend just trying to keep the depth of each tool mark as consistent as possible and making sure when you antique to not let any build up occur in any one spot that could potentially stand out. I hope that helps!
@ sounds good! Thank you so much for the reply!! Definitely helps!!
Good job on the rough side out belt. It looks good.
Underrated
Good video, nice results. Thanks.
That antique looks like tar.
This was really great for me!!! I always struggle on where to start and just keeping in mind "the wide side" while watching you really helped!
👏👏👏
Donde puedo conseguir esos productos Carlos de mexico gracias
Need this with brass hardware.
If you don’t care to send me an email, I’d be more than happy to further discuss!
Done.
Just a beginner here and your videos are SO helpful
Those cheaper belts (Full Grain) with a Solid buckle are commonly available from $18.00 to $32.00 on Amazon. But they do feel Inferior. I would have liked to see what an "Untooled" quality belt/ buckle would cost here?
My base price on belts is $100 USD. Whether someone believes they are “worth” that or not is completely up to them. I’m a solo maker, married with children, with every single aspect of this business falling on me. I know what I have in my belts and I’m confident in the products I make with my hands. I know for a fact in my eyes they are worth that, based on my own experience using my products over the years. I make all my belts double layered with Hermann Oak full grain veg tan, which in itself is a more expensive leather being that it is tanned in the USA. On that same note, my personal labor cost is probably a lot more than someone in other countries that companies use to make those cheaper belts as well. There’s plenty of options out there for quality belts at whatever price someone is willing to spend. But my price is my price and anyone who has purchased something from me knows that I put my best foot forward to go above and beyond to provide as good a product and service as I can. The only competition I’m in is with myself, I have no hate towards anyone else doing it however they want.
hello im thinking of doing leather work belts what do you recommend the cobra class 26 or cobra class 4 thank you. if so what size of nylon thread..
