How to Make a Custom Leather Putter Cover
This video is a step by step process on how I am currently making custom, leather putter covers! These particular putter covers are designed for blade style putters, and are made with Hermann Oak full grain vegetable tanned leather. These patterns are all hand carved, hand tooled, and can be designed many different ways to customize the look.
I have also developed a pattern pack that is now available on my website for any leather crafters that want to use the same template I show in this video! The pattern pack is a digital download that will include the putter cover template and also 7 different tooling designs, all hand drawn by me! The patterns are designed on 8 1/2 X 14 inch paper, and will need to be printed on that size paper to receive the full benefit of the designs. See the links below for more info!

How to Use Bar Grounders for Leather Tooling
Переглядів 6 тис.2 місяці тому
Bar Grounders are a tool option in leather carving/stamping that are used to fill in the background areas of a design. The impression that bar grounders leave in the leather is the look of tiny seed clusters. Bar grounders are a step up from other basic backgrounding tools used in the craft. They take precision and patience to accurately and consistently replicate quality results. To some, bar ...

I'm not saying that you need any of these specific tools to create good work. Its extremely important to develop your skills around the basics before investing he...

Raw footage of me working on a unique leather project in my shop. This is a highly un-edited video of what it is actually like while tooling a custom leather project. Long hours and lots of tapping. This particular item is the front panel of a custom notebook cover. I am using Hermann Oak full grain natural veg tan leather. I drew this design from scratch with an 8B pencil, directly onto the le...

    How do you draw the design on to your work? Do you trace it or free hand it? How do you do it?

      I free hand all of my designs directly onto the leather with an 8B graphite pencil. I have a full length video explaining that process. I intend on making some videos over my thoughts around drawing the designs as well

    Just got my first belt tooled, watching this getting pumped for the next steps. This video lays it out perfectly! Debating about not putting a leather backing on the belt so it’s lighter for everyday wear. It’s about 9 oz leather with basket weave 2/3rds of the way down with an oak leaf/ acorn tooling the rest of the way to the tip. Is two layered belts necessary when tooling??

    • @Girtyleatherco
      @Girtyleatherco 2 дні тому

      It’s definitely not a “must” to add a liner, but I prefer the thickness and structure it provides personally. I wear a double layered belt, that I made a few years ago, pretty much every day. 9/10oz main body and 3/4oz liner. It may feel dense at first but over time the leather will soften up and mold or shape around the hips of whoever is wearing it.

    Hi, i noticed you burnished it with bees wax before dyeing the edges. does this method still allow the dye to penetrate in spite of the beeswax on the surface of the edge?

    • @Girtyleatherco
      @Girtyleatherco 9 днів тому

      It was actually just some glycerin saddle soap, and yes it does still allow dye to penetrate which is why I prefer it over some other methods. I also have a full length video over how I finish edges that might explain it all better!

    I think that you presented your belt absolutely accurately. Is it expensive? Yes. Does everyone need one? No. Can anyone afford one? No. This is the case with all custom made fine craft items and there should never be a feeling from the craftsman that he/she needs to apologize for a charging what their craft is worth! Your tooled belt is absolutely gorgeous!

    How do you finance these machines? Do you just save up until you have the funds to buy it outright? Or are there package deals out there for multiples? I’ve been using a tippmann boss for 20 years and have several old singer and consew industrials (cylinder arm and flatbeds) to cover the bases. But I’m tired of tinkering with them so much to keep them going. I’m thinking I want to replace them all

    • @Girtyleatherco
      @Girtyleatherco 12 днів тому

      To be completely honest I was fortunate enough to be in a position to purchase mine outright at the time I got it. I’m not sure if companies offer the ability to finance them or not but it might be worth a call to find out. I bought mine from Makers Leather Supply but I know Springfield Leather also carries them. You might call Leather Machine Co. directly and I’m sure they would be willing to answer any questions also!

    What size edge beveler do you use for belts? I bought the master edge beveler in 7/64 from weaver leather and it seems too large

    Hello. I just watch your video on antiquing belts and I have a question. I've been doing leather for about 3 to 4 years but haven't done any antiquing yet. Getting ready to make three belts for a friend of mine with their name stamped in them and a bit of tooling. I'm going to die the belts mahogany and use resist and then want to do some antiquing and I'm not sure which color antique to use. I've got a dark brown and a black. Any suggestions what would go good with the mahogany die? Thanks for your help and keep up the good work.

    • @Girtyleatherco

      I personally use dark brown antique paste most of the time. I’ve used almost all the colors from Fiebings, but dark and medium brown are my go to!

    Cannot even tell you how good this video is young man. Outstanding work sir! I’ll pass one little thing on an old timer shared with me. If you want to improve control on your new daubers that are fresh and fluffy, light them with a lighter. Let about 20 percent of that outside diameter burn off. It cleans up the stray fibers, firms them up and gives you way more control with the product you’re applying. Kind of like a jumbo Q-tip. Keep doing work!

    How do you sharpen your edgers?

    • @Girtyleatherco
      @Girtyleatherco 15 днів тому

      To be honest, I never have. I keep them polished by stropping them backwards on the edge of a scrap piece of leather with jewelers rouge on it. But I’ve never actually sharpened them.
