Audio Extra: A Mince Pie Murder...Or Was It?
Hi everyone! This is something a little different. In this audio extra, I walk my research about the story of a mince pie murder…which wasn’t a murder at all and maybe had nothing to do with pie.

What Happened to Mince/Mincemeat Pies in the U.S.?
Переглядів 1,9 тис.14 днів тому
Americans used to eat a lot of mince/mincemeat pies, especially during the holiday season. So why don't we anymore? Was it indigestion? Nightmares? The Puritans? Or the fact that no one seemed to know what exactly the "meat" in mincemeat was? This is the story of how mince pies went from a holiday classic to obscurity in the United States. A Thanksgiving Without Cranberries: The Cranberry Scare of 1959
Переглядів 711Місяць тому
In November 1959, just weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., an announcement from the government sparked fear into the hearts of Americans: cranberries - that quintessential holiday side - might contain a cancer-causing chemical. Chaos ensured. Cranberries were pulled off store shelves. Restaurants removed them from menus. Bars limited cranberry cocktails to one per person. All the...

First introduced in the 1960s, the Creepy Crawlers Thingmaker let kids melt plastic into bugs, arachnids, and other squirmy wormy creatures. But as you might expect from a toy that could cook plastic, the Thingmaker got really hot, leading to burned fingers and the toy’s ultimate demise. So how and why did Creepy Crawlers return from the dead to fascinate and frighten a whole new generation in ...
The Razor in the Apple: Why Are We Still Afraid?

Tales of tampered or contaminated Halloween candy are an urban legend, the result of terrible pranks, hoaxes, or in one prominent case, the tragic murder of a child by his father. But even though the concept of widespread Halloween tampering has been debunked, fears of tampered treats persist. And for decades, one Halloween treat has been at the center of it all. The apple with a razor embedded...

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Life Savers’ Creme Savers were among the most popular candies in the United States. When a Jeans Brand Made a Indiana Jones-Style Commercial
Переглядів 1634 місяці тому
An Indiana Jones look-alike in a hat with a female companion steals a massive emerald from a deity-like statue. The statue’s head tumbles off and rolls after the couple in close pursuit. The pair barely escape being crushed by using a vine to swing over a steep ravine. At first glance, this may look like a scene from a 1980s adventure blockbuster. But it’s not. It’s a commercial for clothing br...
How M&M’s & Snickers Helped Make the Summer 1984 Olympics Profitable

Hosting the Olympics is usually a money-losing proposition. The cost of staff, fees, facilities, security, athlete accommodations, and infrastructure usually vastly exceed money from ticket sales and tourism. But in Summer 1984, the city of Los Angeles turned that around, holding one of the few profitable games in the modern history of Olympics. And this success was in part because of the corpo...

Me eating a pop tart watching this 😂
Would be cool to see more behind the scenes vids.
how many old stories are basically the game of telephone? at least you did your research :)
loved the 70s commercials, with the Swiss Miss singing, "you'll like it hooooot"!
What happend to the props?
This is awesome!! Thanks so much for sharing!! 🩷✨👑
Now I know why I couldn't find the None Such ! thank you( I made my own).
fascinating as always, i'll likely never have them but i find this stuff fun to learn about
I didn't try it until I was 18 or so. My best friend came from a hunting family. She made her homemade mincemeat with venison and lots of brandy. It was heaven!
Aldi brings out their version sometimes, but unfortunately it’s been a while since I’ve seen it.
That sucks 😒
Because fig'n beef prices
1:22 Said frivolity with the vowels reversed! That was actually kinda cool. 😂
Whoops!!
It's not the Holiday Season its Christmas.
I was just talking about this very pie the other day with family. I have never tried it and I’m 55. My father recalls mince pies fondly from his childhood and he is coming up on 84. I have resurrected fruitcake with a delicious recipe from at least 50 years ago so why not do the same with mince! 🎅
Subbed! I love Black Licorice and my mother instilled my addiction to the red variety when I was a kid. At 40 years old, i still eat a few bags a year. Rarely have black because id have to go out of my way to get it, whereas twizzlers are still popular enough to be found everywhere, thankfully. Aside from a Mr Goodbar once every few years, its the only candy I eat.
I also have a lot of Pyrex and Corning items. Dishes. Pie plates; mixing bowls, others bowls, I also have a full set of Syracuse China.
My sister and I always loved having these as kids in the 60s. We just called them "snowballs," or "Christmas snowballs." I can't recall us ever invoking the "flaming" moniker. I remember when lit they had a wonderful waxy (well, duh) smell and the ice cream SEEMED to taste better than normal ice cream, perhaps due to the candle heating a small bit of the ice cream. How fun it used to be to quickly eat around the burning candle so we'd ensure nothing would melt (and blowing out the candle had a Holiday smell to it similarly). All taken together made it seem like an absolutely magical treat way back then! Thank you for posting this -- who knows, maybe I'll actually try to make them at some point.
I LOVED these as a kid. And the holly leaves were not plastic; they were a sugar icing. I remember how great the icing tasted with the ice cream. The candle burning would sometimes drip onto coconut but it didn’t matter because the ice cream was delicious ♥️💚❣️💚🎄🎄🎄
I am here listening while I eat a bowl of Grapenuts with ice cold milk!
Was it just regular vanilla ice-cream with chocolate topping?
The original flavor was! In the U.S., there were also ones made with mint ice cream, chocolate ice cream, triple chocolate ice cream, cappuccino/vanilla ice cream, and strawberry frozen yogurt. In the U.K., there have been a ton more flavors.
I remember only being allowed to have this in the 90's as a kid at very special events like weddings, birthday parties, the holidays, etc. It was delicious, the chocolate and ice cream melded perfectly together and to this day I only have tasted a few types of ice cream that blend majority vanilla with a little bit of chocolate the way I like.
2:17 Correction that I accidentally called Vienna a country, instead of a city. I’m so sorry for the error, and thank you for watching! 😊
2:15 Sorry if this is rude; but slight correction. Vienna is a city in Austria, not a country.
Not rude at all! I’m an idiot, I swear I know that. 😂 I’ll pin a correction in the comments. Thank you!
i honestly forgot about this dessert, i think i only had it a couple times, but i'd be curious to try it again, this channel really deserves more views!
Thank you! 😊
About a month ago they had one of these in the local discount/salvage grocery for about two bucks. Didn't buy it but they're half the size they used to be.
I miss it
Sunbeam sucks. I got it with bowl in the early 1990s just after becoming an adult, after gramma’s died. Her’s from the 1960s lasted 30 years, but this thing went crazy fast and would not go slow on slow speed. I gave it regifted to a new bride friend, and I bought myself a KitchenAid in late 1990s with lift style. It is heavier, and is accurate in the speeds. I love it to this day. No comparison.
I remember eating this once around 2000's.
I remember the commercials, but have never had it!
Now I want one!
Always wear them always will
My dad worked for Golden State and then Foremost. He was a mechanic but I recall him bringing home these and other ice cream. Loved them but they left a weird aftertaste. I think it's the butterfat content in the cream... It doesn't matter; I'm going to make some this year.
Wow, fascinating history. I didn't know the name capri was from Italy and the drink was from Germany. I love learning, and these videos are so fun. Did Shasta ask to take permission for german drink?
Makes me hungry when I watch this. Though didn't think the tray could go in the microwave.
Add Raisins to the mixture.
Grape nuts are the bomb
How many cubes of ice did you put in? Perhaps just too many? Did you happen to come across any vintage photos of these ice crushers wall mounted, I'm curious to know if they looked awkward or stylish! I have the Ice-O-Mat Bucketeer, but no mount.
Can't stand your fake voice.
Way better than luncly
We used to buy these at our ACME.
Loved them
😘👋
I think our food safety and additives/chemicals that are allowed leaves a LOT to be desired.
TBH, I really wish we still had strict rules regarding pesticides and food. I get that it'd be awful to have a higher chance of finding bugs in food, but surely there'd have to be some other way to have bug-free food without putting pesticides in it.
Note: The expected number of barrels in 2024 should be 8.24 million. I’m so sorry for the error, and thank you for watching! 14:02
