  • Raisins seem to be universally loathed by trick-or-treaters. So why do people hand them out on Halloween? This is the story of raisins' long relationship with Halloween -- including a brief moment in the 1980s when adults and children alike dressed up as raisins for Halloween.

To be fair those yogurt and chocolate covered raisins are pretty good and surprisingly high in sugar

Omg this explains a childhood memory of mine! I was maybe 4 or 5, and I remember sitting under a table while "Heard it Through the Grapevine" played like 6 times in a row. Iwas at a dance after a car show with my family, and everybody knew everybody, and this was the late 80s to early 90s, so they were less concerned about who was watching the kids (also yeah.. not gonna lie, my parents weren't really the best, lol.) Anyway, so I guess this is when this craze was going on, and I remember all these absolutely hammered adults doing that dance where it's like, what do you call it, a conga line? Dancing to Heard it through the Grapevine. And they were just so wasted and having so much fun, and my dudes, I just wanted to go to sleep cuz it was like 11 o'clock or something and I was a little kid. I think like the 6th time they played it (consecutively!) I let out a wail because I couldn't hear it one more time! It took me years to be able to appreciate that song. It's a great song, but dang, a kid could only take so much! 😂 I always thought it was such an odd situation to have happened, but this makes it make a little bit of sense now. Thanks for helping me with an unsolved childhood mystery!

Yes! The California Raisins are definitely doing a conga line in original ads. There are also reports of people doing the “raisin shuffle” as well. I’m sorry you had to listen to the song so many times, but I’m glad I could help solve the mystery! 😂

I loved this fun video! What a unique and unexpected topic to cover relating to Halloween. Fantastic work - thank you very much! As a kid in the late 60s, I hated raisins but tastes change. My pantry currently has 3 kinds, golden, flame and standard dark raisins. I use them in everything, muffins, salads, oatmeal, bread and savory dishes. 😊

Purple is my favorite color (and your top and lights are just right, btw!), but I never understood why the California Raisins were purple.
