A very entertaining review😂

I wanted to comment about the 'target' age group of the machine and using technology. I'm 67 years old and love using new features. Navigating should be easy. If people are having trouble navigating, it's the program not the user. I know you didn't mean to be offensive but please get over that idea that older people are not good at using technology. It has nothing to do with age.

Man! I love love love the table base that you’re using with your Bernina…..I’m assuming it’s a repurposed cutting board, yes? I actually had the same idea but couldn’t find a way to cut it to the shape needed. But I now have hope, rekindled - thanks! Plus superior advice on the old machines. I love to tinker with them but Goodwill prices their machines - when they have them - at $25 a pop, and most don’t have power cords or pedals, anyway…such a bummer!💕

Thanks for a great review. I have been sewing for well over 50 years and a die hard Bernina lover. I am not that impressed with the new 990, it seems that they could have done a lot more to fall more in line with the other TOL sewing machines. I have a 770 and 570 machines which I love and I cannot see ever needing anything more than what I have

Several years ago, my husband and I came across a neglected 404 at a local yard sale for $50 and brought it home without knowing anything about it. A lot of learning and a little love later and it has happily powered through anything we have thrown at it. I absolutely adore our 404.

I appreciate the content of this second video. Nevertheless, I am disappointed by Bernina's practice of acquiring existing products and simply rebranding them. It is disheartening to see an increasing number of sewing companies engaging in this behavior. For instance, Brother and Baby Lock sewing and embroidery machines are essentially identical, with new models being introduced simultaneously.

No I do not think its worth much. But Isn't 70 weight thread thinner than 40 or 50 weight? Also, i would like to know how you spell your first name, Cherie, as to thank you properly! Love your content!!!

You can buy 4 Juki ddl8100 industrial sewing machines for the same amount of money that this toy costs. So I don't see an issue with the 2nd thread path.

didnt the first white janome straight stitch have that open half bobbin casing that created many challenges and then the updated black starlight stitch machine have the normal bobbin back to resolve the issue?

Commenting to say that if I sit here and do the maths, write pros and cons list and really search my heart I have to say I want the Janome HD9BE just because it looks so awesome. My only mild concern is that I needed something to only sew corduroy so I bought a white Singer Heavy Duty because it looked cool, only to find later that I could only get the extension table in grey and that ruined the effect.

Do you think the 2nd thread path is worth the extra money?

I was shocked that one cannot drop the feed dogs on this machine. That seems prehistoric.

I'm currently performing some due diligence to decide on a machine upgrade, so I appreciate you taking the time to create this video. I too am looking at justification for the price difference. However, there are some points I'd like to add. Those after market lasers you refer to only provide a straight sewing line. The laser on the B790 Pro moves just ahead of the needle to show where the next stitch is going to go, even when using decorative stitches. It is impossible to replace this with an after market add-on. It's incredibly helpful for decorative stitches, applique and sewing over existing stitches. You mentioned that the machine is marketed at older sewists. Many of them are experiencing diminishing eyesight. So the laser is probably going to help them in ways that many of us cannot appreciate. The hook has been redesigned and the machine is quieter as a result. This new hook is allegedly going to be on all new models going forward. This is not a cheap undertaking. The embroidery module is improved, delivering significantly increased stitching speeds. Someone who is into free motion quilting may have no need for longarm designs and morphing. Many older sewists struggle with arthritic hands, so FMQ is something they can no longer enjoy. They may really appreciate the longarm designs and the functionality this provides. The jumbo hoop is easier to operate than the hoops of old, as you mentioned. The ability to use longarm designs and the inbuilt creativity with stitch design, plus the ability to purchase embroidery designs, may remove the need for digitising software. That's expensive to buy and one may need to purchase a software upgrade each time one upgrades one's PC. Potentially that's a significant offset to the B790 Pro's purchase price. There's an automatic needle threader; again a very useful feature for someone with arthritic hands or diminishing eyesight. The only decision I don't understand is the included BSR. I think that would be better as an optional extra, since many who buy it for the longarm features are probably not interested in the BSR.

It needs something to stand out from other straight stitch machines

When I finally saw ads for this machine my thoughts were, finally what others have been offering for years. And I already own two Berninis, B440QE and B570QEE so I do love Bernina. I have a long arm so I don't need that long harp for quilting. Now for embroidery? Yes. But not at $22K. I can buy a multineedle embroidery machine for a lot less instead. It is a beautiful machine. If I won the big lottery I would buy one. But do I need it? No.Technically I don't need everything the two I already own can do.

Though, I would like the speed adjustment, and empty bobbin indicator, I’ll stick with my Brother PQ1500SL that I bought used for $400. It has drop feed and pin feed for difficult materials.

I found this to be an unfair evaluation of a machine that hasn't been tried yet. The b08 is better compared to the Janome HD9 2 with similar functionality, features, and abilities. Just because the Janome 1600P is a high speed straight stitch machine, does not make it comparable. It would be similar to comparing two different types of industrials, one that is meant for light materials and one meant for saddlery.

I am totally agree with you. Honestly it’s a shame to bernett for labeling their name on the same machine as Janome or the same factory. I am very disappointed as soon as they announced and I thought the same as you and find this machines as identical to janomoe HD straight stitch machine. I believe they spend all the investment for time and money in b990.

Thank you for your review! I already have a Brother new in the box from years ago. It has pin feed. Me, I would buy a Juki or Baby Lock Jazz II or equivalent Brother. Why pay more than $1,500 for a low end Bernette straight stitch?

The Bernette 08 is the same as the Janome HD9 and has the added thread path for heavy duty thread. It only compares to the HD9, not the Janome 1600 nor Elna EF1, these do not have the added thread path to support industrial thread. The price comparison you showed is flat out misleading. The cost of Janome HD9 is $2399 MSRP with a street price about $1900. The Bernette line is the proper placement for this product within Bernina. If it were labeled as Bernina, it would be probably $4599 MSRP, in line with the 4/5 series. As far as the 'plasticly' look of the outer shell, look at every Bernina, for that matter, all the other brands. These machines (Bernina & Bernette) are full metal frames underneath. If the outer shell was also full metal it would weigh twice as much and not add to performance. I guess I'm on a rant because I watch some many 'reviews' that are not fully research and address pros and cons for a machine that it not within the reviewer's demographic. If $2000 is too much to pay for a machine for your use, then don't review a machine that costs more than $2000. Case in point, for the reviews of 'upgrades' from within the line (i.e., 790 Plus to 790 Pro), to make the statement 'is a new feature is worth $15K' makes the fact that the other many many base features of the previous model count for nothing. The price of the upgrade machine includes all previous features plus the upgrades. Fairer comparison would be to sell the old machine and put that money towards new machine...and the difference left over would be the question to ask if it's worth it. I'm sorry, I do apologize. I know that I have surely offended you but these reviews in this approach drive me over the edge. Btw, I have machines from basic brother embroidery only, Bernette B79, Bernina B700, Brother XP3, and Babylock Alliance, and they all provide the necessary features I needed (and looking for) in their price point. Again, apologies.

If you look at videos showing the Bernette 08 machine, the machine body looks like cheap plastic.

Does Bernina have a straight-stitch machine?

I have the Janome HD9 Version 2 and love it. The version 2 has the larger bobbin and two paths for threading your thread. The second path is for heavier thread for sewing leather. I think the average price for the version two is somewhere between 1,200 to 1,400. This machine is awesome for piecing for quilters. I mostly use mine for bag making which it does a beautiful job.

I spent a long time watching this utterly baffled about the size of the free arm and then it clocked. This *should* be a proper Bernina, but they made it the Bernette instead, presumably so they could get away with not adding premium features. I can't see anyone buying this to be honest, what a missed opportunity, a straight stitch machine with feed dogs you can lower with the Bernina free arm could have been a winner, and yet here we are.

I bought a FUJA 2 head 15 needle machine, and it took 45 days to arrive. When I uncrated the machine, it is of awesome quality and build. It works extremely well and very precisely. The majority of the machines are made in China. Freight can definitely add to the price though, and they will try to put profit into the freight. You need to learn to haggle if you feel things are overpriced.

I invested in an industrial tacsew t 111 155 long ago for heavy sewing. lastly i sewed ribbon as binding to faux fur with my binding attachment. its full control.

Did you make the table for your Bernina out of a cutting board? I love it. A tutorial would so welcomed!

I ageee with you. I have a 222 and have kept it for its tiny free arm to use for doll clothes or children’s clothes. It feels like a toy compared to my other machines. I got it cheap 20 years ago. I only keep it in case I want something light to sew on the go. One Featherweight is plenty for me.

what os the difference you feel using the stronger motor?

I think the notion of this machine being full rotary is not quite right. After seeing photos of the underneath it looks like a class 15 style oscillating mechanism. I believe the rotary description applies to the upper thread tension mechanism only.

I like the idea of the embroidery only machine. I agree that wifi capability is unimportant (to me). I prefer to use a transfer device. Why? Because years from now I can still transfer files the old school way like I do on my ULT which uses memory cards or computer floppy disk. Kinda cool. USB is ideal because it is universal. No special software needed to communicate with the machine. Just plug it in.

This sewing machine is too big for my use. I need to be able to pick up and move things around on my own and these larger sewing machines are just not portable enough for my liking. My complaint is that it is not “pretty”. I like the machines with some color like my Pfaff 7550 which I purchased new in the 1990’s.

I loved your no-nonsense and very down-to-earth review of this machine that I've been lusting over for a hot minute since those emails and videos from Bernina started showing up in my in-box. It's a totally different thing to talk to a Bernina dealer freshly returned from Bernina University about the new 990 machine, or to talk to someone who is 100% gung ho and has already put down a deposit to get one even though they have not actually seen one in person, let alone had a chance to test sew on it. Yes, the machine not fitting into my brand new Koala cabinet that I just got 2 months ago is a big deal. Yes the camera and scanning features are cool, but honestly -- the only thing I ever embroider is little quilt labels so me thinking I'm going to suddenly start scanning and digitizing and doing giant embroideries in the new giant hoop is like me thinking that if only I spent $23K on home gym equipment I would suddenly transform into a person who wakes up at 5 AM every day to work out (not!). Because, like you said, just because a machine has fancy bells and whistles, I can think they are cool features but I'm still not going to use them if I don't do that kind of sewing. So now reading through the comments on your review of the 990, I'm wondering whether it would be better for me to be on the lookout for opportunities to buy a secondhand Bernina 790 Pro machine from someone who is upgrading to the new 990? I'm off to look for whether you did a review on that machine when it came out. Thanks!

I just found a Brother 3700 at the Goodwill store for 19.99 - I looked on Amazon to see what the going price was for this machine and looked a some reviews there. It seemed that it was quite a find. She said that if I does not work I can bring it back for store credit. So, I thought that’s cool. After getting it home I discovered that the presser foot will not go down. Do you know if this is an easy fix or if it will cost as much as another machine (The Singer Tradition in that price range and was going to gift this one to a friend. What are your thoughts? Thanks

The Pfaff 1222E semi-industrial home sewing machine gets my vote. They were made in West Germany from the 60’s to the 90’s. I have one that is 45 years old and still sews like a dream. Good luck finding one though.
