Thank you for your video. I have a triumph and that is all the machine I’ll ever need for the type of sewing I do.

I do alterations out of my home. I have the triumph also and other than having to change from serging to coverstitch when working on knit garments, I love it. I have used industrial sergers which are painful to thread even with the pull thru method. The applaud looks intriguing and even though I have a dedicated work space I don't think I would use this machine enough to justify the purchase . thanks so much for the video.

That was such a brilliant review. I did buy a stand alone BabyLock cover stitch machine after buying the Triumph, for the very reason yu suggest, which is switching out to the different modes is a real PITA. This machine is also going to need a LOT of re-threading to do its magic. And there's some magic in it of course. BUT you are right, unless you are going to churn out 500+ garments with those pretty stitches on, and sell them, it really is a bit of a high price to pay for something which looks cute. I have the 'Wave" effect on my machine. I wanted it a lot. Used it not a lot. So, you have your head screwed on right & I am grateful that you have confirmed what I already thought. Go girl, you rock!

I love my Applaud. The decorative stitching you can add to everything is amazing!! I do also own the Triumph and love it as well!! Sounds like you have discouraged a lot of people from owning this great machine!

The video was made because I think it's important to be realistic about both pros and cons before making a decision. For some, the Applaud is a perfect addition to their sewing room. But for others, it's just not the proper fit.

Applaud and Triumph? Why? I bought BL Victory, then Acclaim (I wanted two Sergers) and bought Euphoria Cover Stitch... Wish I had not, unnecessary machine for the amount I will use it.
The two Sergers and two high end sewing machines are all I need.
      Just my opinion.
Each machine is expensive, esp for one function.

Very good video to help consider the Applaud. I already have a cover stitch machine, so this would be a fancy toy that the price wouldn't justify.

This is a great review pointing out the pros and cons. I didn't realize it only had 2 stitches, yes that is a lot of money for this type of serger. I have a Triumph and love it but think I will wait to see if this comes down in price, way down, before I consider adding it to my collection.

For me and the average sewist, I would say it’s too pricey for what you can do with it. I love to be decorative, different and unique so the stitches would fulfill that like but I wouldn’t get enough use out of it to justify the price. I would wait a couple of years possibly until it goes down a couple of thousand and buy a used one. It may be a viable purchase for someone that this is the first cover stitch machine, and or they have a business that they make a lot of knit garments, or they are some type of fashion designer that does a lot of decorative work.
I just bought a used BL Triumph for $2800(FBM) on August 1, and I’m still learning the serger part let alone the cover stitch. I dislike that Baby Lock only includes one or 2 feet with their sergers and all the other feet are an additional purchase. That does get very expensive if you want to take advantage of the other features the machine can do and the additional thread cost. Switching from serger to cover stitch on the Triumph doesn’t bother me since it has the air threading in the needle. It still goes pretty quick. Especially compared to that Brother 1034D that was a pain to thread and I could never get the tensions right. It was problematic trying to serge the fabrics that I wanted to use.

I have the Acclaim and traded my Euphoria for the Applaud. I do a lot of art quilts and fiber art/decorative stitching. I love the machine; I’m most surprised by how easy it is to use and thread (very easy transition from the Euphoria which I loved). I use a lot of the decorative stitches on my Crescendo, enjoy the Sashiko, and felt a lot of my own fabrics for my art quilts on the Embellisher. I tend to use the Accomplish when making my quilted greeting cards and quilted postcards because the small format is too small for the Regalia. I’m packed into two sewing rooms pretty tightly when you add the Sailrite (I used to do a lot more with marine vinyl and upholstery than I do now). I make my own knitwear so I definitely use the coverstitch function. I used to use the Sailrite LSZ a lot more when I did more with marine vinyl and upholstery as it’s a true walking foot machine. If you are into home dec or art quilts/fiber art and have the budget, I think there is some value in the Applaud. Also, if you make athleisure it sure gives you a more commercial finish to those garments. Just my two cents.

I will admit that I am tempted to get this. I do have the means if I really want it, but even though I can afford it I am questioning if that is a good use for my money. I've gotten along very nicely without a cover-stitch my whole sewing life. Usually for T-shirts and such I just hem with a zigzag and so far, none of my grandkids has ever complained. if I want to go fancy, I overlock the edge with my 4 thread Baby Lock, and then use a double needle on my sewing machine. It is a pretty good dupe for a true cover stitch hem. I didn't get a serger until 6 years ago. I have sewn a mountain load of knit wear from shirts to dresses and swimsuits for decades with just a sewing machine, and it wasn't a problem. Having said that, I do LOVE my serger for knits.

You gave a very objective review on the Applaud. How many people can spend that serger that only has limited use. $4500 for a serger would purchase a very nice sewing machine that would be way more versatile and useful to the home sewist.

I would love this machine! I sew, embroider, use cover stitch and serger all the time, sew garments, home dec, fiber art and quilt. I free motion my quilts. I've always had my eye on the Sashiko machine but it is expensive!
So, I would love to have the Applaud but it is also price prohibitive. Thank you for your channel!

I have a gifted Babylock Ovation and I love it. Would I (if I had the money) buy this machine the answer is YES. It’s not hard to switch from serger to cover-stitch, but it would be more convenient if I didn’t need to switch. I look at like having an embroidery only machine and a sewing only machine; which is my current setup. I can sew on projects as I embroider and when one machine is in the hospital I can play with its sibling. Am I getting a cover-stitch machine yes, but not this one because of the price. Good Sewing to You!

  • @sandyp2485

This is a great review of the machine. The machine itself sounds like a great thing to have assuming the sewist has the space and dollars to purchase it. Since I don't have that much space (or money), the tips that you gave about using woolly nylon are super! I'd not thought about using it in my regular sewing machine.
Recently, I've been giving thought to getting a combination serger/coverlock because I need some new clothing items using knits. However, with the information and tips you discussed, I see that I can get along just fine with my sewing machine and ancient serger (which drives me nuts with the threading) plus not have to reorganize my sewing area to accommodate a new machine or my budget for a loan on one.

Good video - thank you😊 I have just bought a used babylock ovation from a dealer Girvan very good price and so far I'm really pleased with it. I practised converting from overlock to covrrstitch on my old babylock Evolve so I am pretty comfortable in the process. I only wish I didn't have to keep removing one set of needles each time I change function. However I wouldn't buy a stand-alone coverstitch machine.

I have a serger and my sewing machine will do stitching for stretch fabrics so I have no need of a coverstitch machine. I only use the serger once every other year as it is. Plus I assume you are talking about US$. I can't even imagine how much that would be in CA$ when you do the $ exchange rate and add in the tax. Thanks for a very informative review and a reminder of the added cost of thread, needles, and feet.

You do not need to buy extra cone for the coverstitch machine… I do all the serging, then the coverstitch, shifting the cones over. I never buy more than 2 cones of one color: so I will use (on both machines) the color closest to the fabric’s in the needles, another one close for not visible stitching.
Coverstitch is a much neter job than double needle on the sewing machine. If you do a lot of knit fabirc, it is a must.
The Applaud is called the Primo in Europe and costs me 2500 Euros. It is going to be used… a lot! From decorative topstitching to home made trims… I will use most of my sock yarn leftovers and more. It all depends, beside the purse capability, on how much creativity and fun you put in your sewing room…
