      not exactly true. the two iwi who went to the chathams to attack moriori were ngati mutunga and ngati tama. they were displaced from their taranaki homelands by waikato maori, not by the british. the british did bring guns into the country, and that enabled waikato maori to attack taranaki iwi, so i guess you could say "because of the british", but it was not the british who displaced them.

    The Māori arrived in New Zealand around the late 13th century, while the Moriori settled in the Chatham Islands approximately a century later, around the 14th century. Thus, the Māori established their presence in New Zealand before the Moriori arrived in their islands.

    • @Breezeyy
      @Breezeyy Місяць тому

      At the time of the invasion of the Chatham Islands in the 1830s, the British Crown had begun establishing its presence in New Zealand, but it was not yet fully established or in control of all regions. The British formally annexed New Zealand in 1840 with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Prior to this, the British had some level of influence and presence, but their authority was not comprehensive or fully enforced throughout New Zealand or its surrounding territories like the Chatham Islands. The Chatham Islands were not formally part of New Zealand at the time of the invasion. The British government and its representatives were aware of the situation, but their control and influence over such distant regions were limited. The invasion and subsequent treatment of the Moriori people were largely driven by local Māori iwi rather than direct British intervention or control.

    Summing up this video: Maori aren't responsible for the slaughter and enslavement of Moriori! British are responsible for the Maori's slaughter and enslavement of Moriori people! You literally claim Maori tribes shouldn't be judged as a monolith and then judge the Crown as a monolith all-powerful entity that should have done something. Get off the fing grass mate. Sure, the Moriori origin myth shouldn't have been told, but now instead we are told misinformation and obfuscations which completely ignore the brutality of what was Maori culture. (what WAS, since true Maori culture is for all intents and purpose now extinct since adoption of Euro/Brit culture)

    • @eeeaten
      @eeeaten 2 місяці тому

      You’re halfway there but are being obtuse. Obviously not all Māori are responsible for the actions of a few in the 1830s. Just like all Europeans aren’t to blame for the actions of the Nazis in the 1940s. Make sense? The British aren’t at responsible for the attack on moriori either. The responsibility of the British crown began when the treaty extended the rights of British subjects to moriori and Māori, which meant moriori should be liberated from slavery. Added to that, the native land court dispossessed moriori of their lands. The inaction regarding slavery, and the action taking the land from moriori, are the two things the crown needed to address.

    The difference between Maori and the Pakeha was that Pakeha claimed to be more sophisticated and more superior then Maori, and these characteristics of the Pakeha people did not give them the right to enact war and killing upon Maori people, irrespective of what relationships occurred between Maori and Moriori. White people of New Zealand focusses upon this aspect in an attempt to justify their own actions.

Now, Maori are painted as a peaceful, united peoples. I prefer the Maori history from the 1820s and earlier. And I agree, Maori back then who did what they did to the Moriori, you cant blame the Maori of today. Just like you cant blame the ancestors today, of those English who colonised NZ, for what happened back then.

      @eeeaten regardless if a group of people THINK they are different based on tribal views, genetically, they were the same people. And yes, no ones saying conflict is confined to Maori. Conflict was and still is, a human trait. I look at Maori back when they came here as a Stone Age peoples to those that roamed the Britanic region thousands of years ago. They fought with clubs, sticks, they took lands, slaves, they cannabalised eachother. All our ancestors did that at some point over our history, its not just Maori. Others just developed faster then Maori which in its own is fascinating. What kept Maori so isolated from other sea going travelers is a big question.

      New Zealand Hearald news headline 29 May, 2024 “Raglan man Simon Terence Hamiora Kereopa drags partner outside naked, pours boiling water over her“ Kereopa ( A MAORI) dragged her outside through the kitchen door by her arms, down the kitchen steps and onto the ground. He then grabbed the kettle, which was just inside the door, and poured the boiling water over the victim - who was naked at the time - directly onto her skin. As he did so, Kereopa told her “you deserve it, and that’s what you get”. He then told her he would reboil the jug and pour it on her face. She ran to seek help from her sister but she was asleep, before running into her daughter’s room and hugging her. Kereopa then went into the room and said, “once you let go, I’m burning your face”. Judge Stephen Clark noted Kereopa’s 17 family violence convictions, eight of which were against the current victim. The man responsible, Simon Terence Hamiora Kereopa, was today jailed for the incident, his ninth conviction against the victim during their 20-year-plus relationship.

    The Moriori were actually known as the "peace civilisation of Waitaha" who have a 92 human generations connection to New Zealand, compared to the Maori claim to 38 human generations. Seen in "song of Waitaha" 1996, by Barry Brailsford, as their "secret oral transmission". The Invasion of the Chatham Islands in 1835 by Maori in 1835, began with the boning out of the flesh of a 12 year old girl and hanging her flesh on the village entry post, to indicate that a very well practised cannibalism ritual was underway. Her only fault was to help heal the invading Maori cannibals back to health after a near death sea voyage from Taranaki. Which is how these Maori cannibals got to hold the "fake news" "native title in New Zealand".

      @@eeeaten lol really? no agenda. Im neutral. Not even a kiwi lol, Just here with an open mind to learn things. Certainly not afraid to say what i think...even without you attempting to bait me lol. All i ask for in videos like this is 100% accuracy. Coming at this from a neutral perspective i found it interesting that the instances that some people could potentially be critical of maori culture for, the Moriori situation for example, this video exonerates the maori people of any wrong doing whatsoever. Theres other examples too. I have no interest in a back and forth with you though lol

      @@tast7017 if you think the video intended to exonerate the people who attacked the moriori you misunderstood. those people went to the chathams to take the land and people as their own, slaughtered and enslaved peaceful people. the issue is whether we blame "maori" for it, when maori were many different peoples. to blame "maori" as a group is like saying white people are responsible for the actions of the nazis.

    In late 1842, a small party consisting of Ngāti Mutunga and their Mōriori mōkai chartered a brig to sail southwest to the Auckland Islands. They sailed there due to the purchase of Rēkohu by the New Zealand Company in 1840-which obviously prohibited slavery due to the newly acquired lands now being held under New Zealand law. Matioro, a chief of the iwi, was reluctant to give up his slaves and had a skirmish with a French crew, which led to the decision that his people had to move elsewhere due to those pressures. Upon reaching Auckland Island, Matioro began surveying the island. During this time, two of the chiefs who accompanied him on the journey to Auckland Island decided that the island was inhospitable for settlement and set sail before he returned. This left Matioro and his people stranded on the archipelago until March 1856.

    Get out of this country! Some foreigner telling us what to do ? Why should they change the name and bring back the swords and horses! Who cares if one sensitive group gets triggered ? The Historic crusades were good anyway

    I have a question? If 2 taranaki tribes( ngati mutunga and ngati tama) went and killed moriori then why didn’t they just do it earlier? Why did they need the pakeha to take them there 🤷‍♂️ makes no sense right. Haha,

    • @TuiPolitics

      I couldn't tell you why they did it, all that matters is they did do it. They took a European made boat to the chattam islands. It's just the history fact

    • @eeeaten
      @eeeaten 5 місяців тому

      those iwi were displaced from their taranaki homeland by other iwi (waikato) to the north. they were in wellington with their allies ngati toa, considering their options. they made a conscious decision to go to an island nation to take the lands and people there. so they hijacked the british ship and went to the chathams. the existence of moriori on the chathams hadn't long been known about - they were isolated until a british ship found them in the 1790s.

      @@eeeaten think the British operated the ship their not the Maori. Secondly a lot of Maori knew about them living in the Chathams. I feel like the pakeha provoked it and even loaded ngati mutunga up just in case. The moriori had a meeting and the Maori overheard ior thought they were gonna get attacked so they initiated it first. It was a tactic used so the crown could steal the land from their original taranaki whenua. Yea other tribes were claiming some and sold off to pakeha but a lot of it was confiscated from them from the crown. Hence why Ngati mutunga jumped at the chance to fight against the crown in the taranaki wars.

    • @eeeaten
      @eeeaten 5 місяців тому

      @@joshua29885 as above, maori hijcaked the ship, forcing the crew to sail them to the chathams. it's nonsense to think pakeha provoked the situation, and did not provide provisions. when the _rodney_ arrived in the chathams the warriors were sick and starving from the journey, and moriori nursed them back to good health. it is documented that moriori met to discuss the violence being done to them, some younger men wanted to fight but they were denied by the elders. the crown had not stolen the land in taranaki back then, there were less than 1000 british people in the country. waikato maori had invaded and driven ngati mutunga and ngati tama off. the wars with the british crown were decades after, so are not relevant to motivation for the attack. you can read all of this online, or i recommend michael king's books.

      @@eeeaten yea we know so why do pakeha blame all Maori for chathams island attack. And use that as an excuse for the poor treatment of Maori on mainland. 🤷‍♂️. But ngati mutunga did participate in the fighting on mainland aswell. The moriori if they had fought back might have been a different outcome come due to their numbers at the time.
