United Kingdom
Приєднався 28 сер 2020
Welcome to the UA-cam Channel of the Highland Hikers. We are Douglas and Alistair, and we hope you can join us as we explore our home country of Scotland. We are keen walkers and will be bagging a few Munros in addition to venturing through the less known trails and routes the country has to offer. We will be releasing videos on a bi-weekly basis and would love it if you could join us on our journey.
Taking the Gondola half way up a pair of Munros | Munro Bagging | Nevis Range
A look back to the summer when we took the gondola half way up the Aonachs to bag two Munros, Aonach Beag and Aonach Mor. Is this classed as cheating?

The 20km route for Beinn Achaladair and Beinn a'Chreachain is already a reasonably big day out, but add in glorious sunshine and high temperatures and it becomes even harder. On the plus side, the views over Rannoch Moor to the many, many Munros beyond, as well as neighbouring Glencoe and the Buachaille, make for a spectacular day. Drooket on the Ochils | Glen Sherup Horseshoe | Innerdownie, Tarmangie Hill
Thanks guys - im coming up through Glasgow on my LeJoG route next year and will be walking the Kelvin Walkway to Milngavie. Hopefully it wont be as boggy as you experienced!
That sounds awesome, best of luck!
Very nice. Have been to Pitlochry as well this year. Nice little town.
Its possibly my favourite area in Scotland. Many happy memories made there.
Apart from the waterfall it doesn’t look exciting
It was a very pleasant wander in what is a very accessible place. Great for a family walk if you live nearby and don’t want to travel far.
I worked in the mill, not sure why on earth someone was allowed to paint it white, I live in Manchester and have many mills here, and there amazing buildings , some of them have been turned into accommodation .❤️
That’s a good idea! Makes sense to reuse the old buildings where possible.
There possibly is but I failed to spot it. I did enjoy the gondola ride!
It was a very pleasant start to a hike
I started off with the intention of walking but got into a guddle. The mountain bikers are not to be messed with so i went down and took the gondola. I didn't think I had enough time to do Beag and get the last gondola, but later realised that when the gondola stops, the bikers tend to stop. I'm counting Aonagh Mor in my bag, but have a few 'insurance munros' against any revision or cheating accusations, so my centure is safe.
I imagine they will come down the hill at a fair speed. Is there not a separate walking path to the downhill cycling sections?
According to Welsh folklore, Faries were malevolent creatures & not friendly like portrayed in movies. Those trees are magnificent, such a beautiful area .
Its a beautiful spot for a wander with the family
After finishing the Rob Roy Way I stayed a few days in Pitlochry and had a day hike up to Ben Vrackie as well. Very nice place. Thx for sharing.
Awesome, sounds like a nice way to finish the Rob Roy Way 😃
Absolutely brilliant video guys. Definitely don't think it's cheating getting the gondola. Some munros like in the cairngorms like Glenshee or Ben Lawers you start from like 400 meters etc. So am guessing it's similar. It's the way I want to do it one day and maybe take my son up with me. Got to say fot summit snack. Definitely the cheesecake lol. Again guys well done on another fantastic video. ATVB Alan
Thanks Alan! There are some that require even less effort than these to get up as you say. Its certainly a different way of doing them.
The Ochils are very underrated.
Even in poor conditions I’ve still enjoyed my trips to them. Far quieter than what the Munros can be.
Thanks for uploading, guys - missed your uploads. Not cheating when you can drive a car half way up the Lawers group and most will use the ferry for the Mullardoch Munros. If you were going to be a purest you'd start them all from sea level. Life's too short. 🏴🏔👍 Oh and the caramel, chocolate thing gets our vote.
Cheesecake ftw! Thanks for watching!
If you just get it on the way down you usually get it for free.. Wee tip for future reference 👌
Aye but they don’t let you up for free 😂 that would have been handy
You had good weather nice views I took the Gondola too it was a bleak winters day and did these in complete whiteout it was hard work I don’t see anything wrong with using the Gondola it did save my legs a bit lol cheers Andy
Dougs didn’t get a view the first time but this day was great. Could see far and wide before the weather turned when we got back to the car
Stunning views, great to see you both back :)
Its good to get another video out there again 😁
So really you haven't done them, absolutely shocking!!!
I’ve touched the top of both of them at least 😂
You had me at cheesecake.
😂 its so good, was worried it would have been a mushy mess by the time we got there
@@HighlandHikers But you’d have eaten it regardless, as I would. 😂
Lol of course, would have drank it if that was the state it was in 🤣
Here in the States you’d definitely get dinged for that gondola ride. I’m not into cheesecake so I’m going with the white caramel!
There will be people here as well that will feel the same I would assume. I have to say I am disappointed in your choice though Seth. I thought you would appreciate the effort of taking such a thing up a mountain! My day is ruined now 😂
@@HighlandHikers haha, it's not the size it's the flavor. 😆
😂
27.50??? 🤯 nice vid
😬 not the cheapest eh!
Nice one guys
Thanks Alan
Great video! Good to see you guys are posting again! We also used the gondola, i definitely dont think its cheating! Love the summit snacks! ❤
Thanks Lily! I suppose you tackle the mountains whichever way suits you. This was a pleasant change to the norm! I’m not sure where to go for summit snacks next!
@HighlandHikers I'll give you some ideas 😛: chocolate trifles, chocolate cake, nutella pancakes, carrot cake and oat biscuits!! 🍫, Dad says pork pies!!
Love these ideas, don’t tell Dougie about them!
Most definitely cheating but who cares 😋 😋 27.50 😮 I’d rather take the pain 😂 Has Alistair lost weight ? Great video guys 🚠 ⛰️ ⛰️👏 👍 Ps Stob Ban is high on my list looks awesome from distance but a helluva walk 🚲?
It was painful paying it but we’d never have been up and down in time before the weather turned. Thank you, I’ve been steadily loosing weight over the last year and just trying to be healthier in general ☺️ Stob Ban does look great, hopefully will visit it in the not too distant future
@ I agree and I would have done exactly the same at this time of year with shorter days and weather I’m sure the views going up would have been pretty spectacular 🤩 Anyway good to see yous back out and keep up the healthier lifestyle it’s very recognisable 👍
Nice one guys 👍
Thanks 👍
£27.50 plus parking?
Yup!
Nice to see you both back out. Had my eye on that wee double for a winter camp (if we actually get a winter this year) brilliant video, ATVB Robert
Thanks Robert. I imagine it would make for a great camping spot. Plenty grassy flat area.
Hey guys I've missed youse, hope you are keeping well ! 😁👍
Its been a while but we’ve been away due to Dougs being a bit broken. We may be quiet over the winter but should be back in action again regularly after that.
Congratulations on bagging your first Munros! The views from Cruach Ardrain and Beinn Tulaichean are absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Thank you!
Thank you very helpful video 🙏🙏
You’re welcome ☺️
Beautiful. Have been there around as well this year during my Rob Roy Way Hike. Thx for sharing.
Thank you! I can imagine the Rob Roy Way will be a lot quieter than the WHW, hope you enjoyed it.
@@HighlandHikers Enjoyed the WHW and the RRW both. But yes, RRW is much a lot quieter. I was mostly alone on the trail.
That sounds pretty good in my opinion. Sometimes just being alone in these places is just what is needed.
The mountain looks good and safer from a distance. Wouldn't attempt it!
Each to their own. Feel like in those conditions its about as safe as it can be.
Hi there. I wondered if you wouldn't mind me using this footage to play over my friend's piano piece she has written called Sensing Shetland? You of course will be credited on the video. It is not for profit. Thank you. Alice
Hi Alice, thanks for getting in touch. Would you mind sending us an email with some more details about this, please? scottishhighlandhikers@gmail.com Thanks!
@@HighlandHikers Thank you! I have sent an email :-)
Nice work guys - enjoyed the video.
Thank you ☺️
Really enjoyed your video. I done this very route 2 times last month and its absolutely stunning views on most of the walk. Thanks again for the upload.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video and the hike 😃
Excellent film, I hope to go there one day myself!!
Thanks! Hope you have a good hike when it comes 😃
@@HighlandHikers 👍
Just did this walk on Saturday. It's definitely one of my favourite Munros so far. Summit snack of choice, Bounty a taste of paradise 😅.
That`s a long hike! Well done, not sure if I could do that! Interesting to see the Caingorms, I have not been there. Thanks
Once you’re up on the plateau there isn’t that much ascent/descent, which makes it a lot easier
Interesting, thanks again!!
Carrot cake for me. I need to improve my summit snacks, not as good as yours. Another great video!!
Thanks Stephen! I reckon summit snacks are the best bit about hiking 😋
Only just seen this having recently discoverd your hiking videos. I do hope everything has worked out for you, life can be tough and I wish you all the very best and look forward to seeing all of your videos
Thank you. After 18 months I’m happy to say that I still feel like I made the right decision and have never looked back. Enjoy the videos!
What an amazing video, it had everything, fantastic camera work, spectacular scenery, informative and great banter and next time I am in Scotland Yum Yums are on the menu. The background music added to the atmosphere and it was interesting to see how quickly weather conditions can change in the mountains. Well done guys!
Thanks a lot Stephen, thats a lot of great feedback there! Yum yums are amazing and definitely worth a try. It was fun watching the weather coming in, could see the snow front approach us like a wall of white.
I did this route yesterday it was absolutely epic
Was a glorious day as well, glad you had fun!
How do you get to this car park we went here but parking we found was near castle Campbell
Hi there. We started from “Dollar Glen Car Park”, although this can get busy depending on what time you arrive. If that’s full, you can park a bit further down into Dollar at “Hillfoots Rd Car Park”. Hope this helps!
@@HighlandHikersthanks for the information guys you’ve got a great channel
Thanks, you’re welcome!
hi cannot decide between the talon pro 30 and stratos 26 for day hikes i see you list both in your hiking equipment have you used both if so which do prefer
I have the Talon Pro and Dougs has the Stratos (we usually hike together). The one thing I wish the Talon had, which the Stratos has, is the gap between the pack and the shoulder straps. I can imagine this will keep you cooler, although I don’t think the Talon makes you that warm in hot weather.
Any background on the mushroom mural down Merchant city?
This is part of the “Fellow Glasgow Residents” mural - www.citycentremuraltrail.co.uk/murals/muralabout/28
@@HighlandHikers Thanks for the reply.
I do appreciate your information heavy videos. In this your first posting it was that you turned the camera on the roadside, parking and start of climb areas. For a munro climber that my seem pointless. But once on the route, I have experience, paper maps, photos of summits, and even GPS to guide me. But to get from the car or bus stop I can have to just hunt around. Not often but it is a feeling I don't like. JMO.
Thanks! We’ve been in that situation before, sometimes going the wrong way at the start 😂
Nice video we are following your route soon 🎉
Thank you! Enjoy the hike, hope its a beautiful day
To all would be Dumyat walkers, be that the approach from the village of Menstrie is very steep and twice the height as you go from sea level
Yeah that’s definitely a harder route than the one in this video!
stay in bed lol
lol, perhaps on a rainy day 😂
Heading to Gairich tomorrow and this has helped the prep tremendously. Thank you :) ps Carrot Cake wins every single time !!!
Awesome, hope you have a great hike 😃
Tips on parking?
I did this hike before parking became more of an issue, however parking on the verges of the road will result in parking fines. My advice would be to check recent forum posts to see what the current situation is for the small car park.
James Watt was originally the first engineer who was asked to build the water supply to greenock. He said it couldn't be built. Robert Thom did it
Every day is a school day
Good view over to the Paps of Jura from there as I remember, or does Ben Vane obscure it?
It may do, but looking at the OS map you could potentially see it just to the right of Ben Vane.
@@HighlandHikers I reckon it was from the summit of Ben Vane I’ve viewed them from then. Like you, I did both peaks in quick succession though not on the same day.
