Back Garden Bird Photography with Nikon Z8: Siskins and Sparrowhawk
Hi Darrell That was an interesting exercise. We could not see any difference. Many Thanks Jon and Sandra
Interesting question the other side of the coin is that with landscape is a longer shutter speed with trees and flowers are lest sharp. The real quest is how fast do you need to be ? So I found it interesting I do wild life and that’s where shutter speeds matter . So I would have thought that the depth of field and foucs matter has much in landscapes .
I generally set 2 speeds, stationary birds 1/320, birds moving 1/2000. Just 2 buttons set up simple stationary or moving.
very informative, i have a Z8 myself so it was very relevant for me :)
Noise reduction software and filters may reduce detail in a photo.
I didn't use them in this experiment.
Are you using mechanical shutter or electronic “shutter” mode in your testing? As pointed out diffraction May occur with very high mechanical shutter speeds
The z8 doesn't have a mechanical shutter.
@@DarrellOakdenPhotography OK thanks, then if all taken directly "off the sensor" then it is unlikely that shutter speed has any influence on image quality
Thanks Darrel that’s an interesting little real world experiment
Thanks.
It may be true with mechanical shutter. High shutter speed is obtained by reducing the space between the first and second curtains. For very high speed, the slot is so narrow that diffraction occurs and reduces image quality.
It was an experiment for me personally and specifically the z8 with an electronic shutter. I take your point that a mechanical shutter can produce different results.
too much
All comments gratefully received.
Old film guy here and I do remember being taught that shutter speed made a difference, but now digital your experiment proves that wrong. Thanks for sharing.
For film, shutter speed matters. I think faster shutter speed means darker but less grainy image. You'd then "push" your film when developing to increase exposure.
For digital, the mechanical shutter may cause diffraction on high speeds but the camera used in this video Nikon Z8 doesn't a mechanical shutter.
Hi Darrell. Really impressed with your photography. I am keen to improve my bird photography and was considering changing from Fuji XT 5 to Nikon Z8. Was wondering if you or any of your subscribers have any advice.
I can only recommend the z8 - I really enjoy using it and get great results. I have no experience with the Fuji.
Crikey you'd have been knackered after that little morning of activity. Glad to see you found some lovely images to help with the recovery process though.
Thanks Denise. I consider my back to full fitness now. It is just over 6 weeks since the op and I've not looked back.
@@DarrellOakdenPhotography yay! Great to hear. Enjoy those next adventures for being out with the camera in nature - and birds.
Glad you thought to take it a bit easier as not good to overdo it and spoil your recovery. Photos were superb as always (especially the swallow in flight) and I enjoyed seeing your local area - what a great place to live. And definitely wise to be aware of slippery stiles. Some in my area are so narrow, too, that you feel your foot will slide off. And some are made for giants with long legs!! Lol!
Thanks 👍I have lived here now since 2006. When we got married it was a choice between living here or in my small terrace in a town. It was an easy decision. Thanks as always for continued support.
@@DarrellOakdenPhotographyAbsolutely the right choice! We live in the countryside too and would only move back to a town, kicking and screaming, lol!? ?
Hi Darrell The robin on the post was really nice and the swallows are always well worth a photograph. It was a pleasant relaxing video. Take care. Many Thanks Jon and Sandra
Glad you enjoyed it. I often get the best photos in my back garden.
Sunday is a busy day for me (Church Minister) but I always look forward to the time I can sit down and watch the weekly video. Thanks as ever.
Thank you for your support. Glad to a part of your busy day.
Thx Darrell. Very good point you make about access to the countryside via public footpaths. I think it’s something many Brits take for granted. As an ex-pat one of my biggest frustrations is not having legitimate access to the countryside in the same way you have in the UK
I made the comment because I have seen UA-camrs from overseas commenting on how it is not normal to have such access in other parts of the world. It is very similar with our wealth of nature reserves. We are spoilt here.
ohhh
I have a z7ii and having recently started with bird photography I’m thinking of upgrading to the z8, so this is really helpful, thanks!
I much prefer my Z8 to my old Z6ii. I have not looked back.
You live in a lovely part of the country, Darrell. Must be great to have that sort of countryside to explore right outside your front door. I think the un-named bird feeding on the berries at around 5.36 is a juvenile willow warbler.
Thank you. If in doubt I don’t commit to an identification. I am notoriously poor at identifying the less common birds.
Lovely video Darrell, took me 8 weeks after surgery (not as serious as yours) to be fully back to fitness. Frustrating but worth not overdoing it and causing any issues
My operation was six weeks ago today and I would say that I am back to full fitness.
Back to back Great Video Darell Oakden Photography....❤❤
Thanks again! Glad you are enjoying the content.
Thanks for this video from İstanbul👍🏼
Thank you. I think you are my first viewer to comment from Istanbul. Enjoy.
Hi Darrell The Wrens are really nice birds to photograph. It was a good sighting of the Goosanders. We have been to the bird hides but not seen many birds recently, we used to see a Woodpecker when we went pre-Covid. Many Thanks Jon and Sandra
My best sightings came after finished filming.
Excellent video, I still love to shoot in B&W
Thank you
Great video, very informative, we watched your video about marella discovery before we went on that ship last year for our 1st ever cruise and it really helped we are due to go on the Explorer next year, so I watched this one, and again, very helpful. I will probably need to watch it a few times lol, there's a lot to take in, thank you. Keep up the good work 😊
Glad you found it useful. We are going on Voyager at the end of October, so look at for another video from that boat.
My Favourite UA-camr Darell Oakden Photography. Best vid Ever.❤❤❤
That is very kind. I am glad you enjoy my content.
Great video Darell and some great images in the end, love the one of the Wren. 👍
Yes my best images came just before I got back to the car. I had already filmed the end of the video.
Well done, Darrell, you got some wonderful images from that brisk walk - and what a beautiful place Tittesworth Water is. I love the juvenile bluetit pics and the little wren, and the grey heron. After a dull and dismal Sunday here in the south it was lovely to sit and enjoy your video!
Thank you. This vid was filmed at the end of July - feels ages ago. It is five mins from where I work.
I'm in three months in from my open heart surgery I'm just getting back where I think I can carry my camera with my 55 - 300 mm lens my 150 - 450 mm lens is still to heavy to carry over any distance in my favorite wetlands to photograph birds . Your photographs remind me why I'm missing being able to do bird photography.
My surgery was not a major. It will be five weeks on Tuesday and I would say I’m back to normal. Hope you feel better soon.
Nikon has always been my go to system. I tried sony for a bit but it just not have the same Nikon feel and images. This will be my next body
Great vid Darrell. some great shots once again. I noticed you used the 100-400mm. A question I'm sure we all want to know, 100-400mm or 180-600mm?
I like them both. 100-400mm is lighter and seems to lock onto birds in flight a little quicker. The 180-600 is really sharp at longer distances. I did film this two months ago before the 180-600 arrived. My release schedule is not chronological at the moment after working around my operation.
@@DarrellOakdenPhotography Thanks Darrell, I will check that vid out. I'm leaning towards the 100-400mm at the moment.
5:27 The Z8 is fast, but not 1/160000 fast 😉
Whoops a typo. I get more comments about my labels than anything else. Hope you likes the video.
Yay, another video!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Interesting Z8 you have if you need to use your left hand to activate the playback/review button! 😂😉 Your right thumb is the best digit to use to activate the review button! Past cameras benefitted from setting the function 2 button but I have forced my brain to re-adjust to the thumb with the Z8... actually it is not as good as using the F2 button but frees that up for something else at least - me? I don't really review that much so it makes sense now not to use the F2 button anymore. Nice vid btw and I do think that your re-assignment of the Disp button makes really good sense... I think I will give that one a go.
As I said in the video it is just what works for me and give people ideas. Everyone will find solutions that work for them.
Great vid thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
A wonderful way to recuperate. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
What a lovely way to spend a few hours and thanks for taking us along with you. I would agree with your ID of the Teal-they are much smaller in size compared to a Mallard. I did wonder about Garganey at first but the bird in your picture lacks a light eye stripe and the base of its lower bill is yellowish orange in colour so that would indicate Teal.
Nice to know I wasn't too far off the mark with my ID. I do enjoy being in the hide.
Glad you are recovering well, Darrell. Loved this video and the great shots too. Am deeply envious of your kingfisher hide!
I am lucky to have it and only 5 mins walk from home.
Oh that was lovely, Darrell. Very relaxing to watch and listen to. What a beautiful little duck. I'm sure you're right about that one being a teal. The kingfisher was the icing on the cake of course. And I have now learned the sound of the water rail thanks to this video!
Glad you enjoyed it. It is good to have the Kingfisher back.
Hi Darrell It’s good to see you are feeling well . The Kingfisher photograph was a great shot well worth waiting to see. Thanks Jon and Sandra
Yes. It never gets old seeing it so close.
That’s a great kingfisher shot!
Thank you.
Glad you're on the mend Darrell. Would love to see a Kingfisher in real life ❤
Thanks May. It is nearly four weeks now and I am almost back to normal. Need to build my fitness back up. I went for a walk with the camera on Friday and was knackered afterwards.
Looks like a female Teal to me Darrel, nice little hide you have there 😊
That was my suspicion. I am lucky to have the hide and only five mins from home.
Glad you’re feeling better lovely situation sitting in the hide next to a pond with the kingfisher 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Great vlog Darren are you impressed with the 180-600
I really like the lens I am getting sharp images with lots of detail from the opposite side of the pond.
Beautiful pictures and hope someday I also capture a kingfiisher. What settings you use for filming.
Set the frame rate to 60 fps and the focusing to full time. All exposure settings are on auto.
@@DarrellOakdenPhotography Thanks, setting in 4K?
Yes I would agree with your id of Teal 👍
We are about to book this, seen mixed reviews but overall looks great!
We saw negative reviews from people who were on at the same time as us and we wondered if they were on the same ship. They are not the newest ships at sea, but the staff are brilliant, lots of great food and drink restaurants and plenty of entertainment. Can't be beaten on value for money.
Darrell it's amazing you've had such a quick op with your gall bladder - so different to when I started nursing a couple of decades ago. Great to see the recovery is so far going okay. Lovely to have a quiet afternoon in the garden seeing what comes while in the hide.
My operation was three weeks ago today. I am back to exercising and eating as normal. No pain and no looking back.
@@DarrellOakdenPhotography great to hear.
Nice one Darrell, going on the Discovery next April to the Caribbean. Thanks for the information and your time and effort. Cheers.
Have fun!
another great video Darrell. I like to use the Wimberley monogimbel on my monopod...following a great review by Steve Perry...just before I went to Antarctica in 2020 ! It was superb
Thanks I'll take a look at that.
