Great tutorial, Brad! Do ZF-8’s require additional maintenance with higher miles? I see a lot of talk about mechatronics, solenoids, valve bodies, etc. with ZF-6’s, but never anything with the 8’s.
@@justinmckeown9029 Hey Justin, the 8hps are a little more simpler compared to the 6hps. They have less seals in them to fail, I'd say drain and fill is pretty much all you need to worry about.

Some older n47s (E8x, E9x, E60, X...) died of a high pressure fuel pump failure because of bmw dealerships not properly bleeding the fuel system after routine diesel filter replacements. In this video as well, the starting back up was pretty slow. I replaced my filter and didn't have access to a sufficient scan tool to start the bleeding process, so i just turned the ignition on off about 15 times, with some longer breaks inbetween to let the canbus fully turn off and on again. After that, it started within 5 seconds of cranking. I suppose that taking off the injectors might introduce more air into the system than the replacement of the fuel filter, that I had already filled with diesel, but still, I find it hard to believe that this Bleeding Procedure used here was really working well and sufficient. Perhaps one could do multiple rounds of that program, let the canbus fully go to sleep inbetween or turn the ignition on and off. Having these Horrorstories of capital engine failures due to dry diesel pumps in the back of my mind just really made this last sequence grueling to watch for me personally. The newer pumps in the f series and n47 gen 2 engines might have pumps that are not as prone to fail for that, but i dont know that for sure. But i do have to say that i really appreciate the effort you guys put into this video, it really is very helpful and also very well produced
@@christoph3915 Hey there, thanks for the insight. Replacing the fuel filter is a completely different ball game vs. removing the injectors and rail. This is because it's before the high pressure system. For a fuel filter, you are on the low pressure side of it. So for fuel filter changes, it's quick and easy to prime the system as you don't introduce air into the high pressure side of it. It will long crank for a few seconds and then start up. For doing the valve cover gasket and removing the high pressure system, this is a completely normal priming process and procedure. I have been working on these BMW diesels strictly for the past 7 years now if that adds any credibility and I'm also certified in diesel repair + I have my bachelor's degree in automotive engineering. I do recommend for your next fuel filter change to actually prime the system with a scan tool, turning on the ignition only runs the fuel pump for a split second, it only fully runs when the engine is cranking over or running.

Would you say n57 has more problems than m57 motor /set up ?
@@Dentprotony Hard saying honestly. I like both of them, they both seem to be great engines. I think most people blow the n57 issues out of proportion.
Do you think the 57 with the zf8 speed would be a good jeep wrangler engine swap???…it seems like the dream engine and tranny swap for my 2006 jeep TJ especially with the torque ppl say these things make I’m really wanting to do this…any opinions on this question???
Yeah it would be a good swap. You just need to figure out how you're going to mount it, the transfer case adapter, stand alone computer, cooling, power steering ECT.
Hello there, is it the diesel it self sold in north america? that doesnt meet the quality requirements to avoid issues like that? i brought my 745d to north america which have a diesel bmw 8 cylinder engine i would like to avoid issues like that.
Yea mostly in the states because of the low sulfur diesel. The reduction in sulfur led to less lubricious fuel and the cp4 does not like that.
Doesn't that engine have a cp3 in it?
@@eman9372 Thats what i think i may should use an additive or 2 stroke oil what do you think ?
@@bradtourt CP3.3 with 3 pistons
@lesablier2088 I wouldn't worry about the cp3 pump
Hey, Brad. Great video. If a person is sending you a 100k+ N57 vehicle for maintenance, would it maybe be good to just have the CP4 pump replaced at the same time as having you install this kit? Or would you solely recommend just doing the disaster prevention kit by itself? Thanks!
There is an updated pump to prevent it from doing this, but I would just recommend doing this kit instead and possibly waiting if or when the pump goes bad.
@@bradtourtGreat video and explanation of the need for it! I’m doing the kit on my B57 540d soon so I’ve gotten the plate from Matt but have to see what I need for hardware and hoses. Is it 8mm fuel hose for both the feed and the return? You mentioned the return hose being larger than the feed hose. Do you have info on how they’ve modified the new pumps to prevent the piston rotating in the bore?
@@ronhannigan2053 Directly off of the pump they are the same size, however the return does get larger where it disconnects from the body. As for the updated pump, they have set screws/pins that keep the pistons from rotating in there. I'm unsure if the b57 has the updated pump here in the States.
One question? If the micron filter is only on the return, and then the pump fails. Why would it not send metal through to the rail and injectors?
That's what I'm wondering. It seems like it would only save debris from going back to the tank.
That's a great question, I was wondering that myself before I talked to Matt Whitbread about it. In short, the plate that goes into the metering valve location blocks off a port that would feed into the high pressure system. When the pumps go bad all the debris is sent to the metering valve (that's why people pull the metering valve to check for debris if it's bad) then there is a passage that would send it to the high pressure system. With that plate blocking it, it wouldn't make its way into the high pressure system. Plus, when the pumps go bad, they don't pump anymore as well.
When the pumps go bad they don’t stop working immediately. I had a 11 duramax that I went to do cp3 swap on. It was running fine, I just wanted to bullet proof it. When I pulled the metering valve there was filings. Injectors failed testing so I ended up doing the whole system. If the truck stops running from it it’s usually catastrophic failure, which I know on 6.7 fords they replaced engines when this happened, not exactly sure why the whole engine needed to be replaced but I bought one with a new engine and on the repair that’s what they cited as the reason.
Glad to see a little of a tease of the 30T turbo system, can't wait to hear more info on that, would love to install that in my US 740ld.
No problem at all. Yeah the 40d turbo system will be pretty sweet, it's kinda on the back burner but it's something that will be happening for sure. It's very expensive to do, it's honestly cheaper to get a complete engine shipped vs. gathering parts as there are a lot of differences.
@ Did some research myself, there are quite a few differences, I agree. I figured piecing one together was the only way, since the engine model wasn't cleared for US emission standards, so you believe it's possible to import a complete engine?
You just save the day!, my car broke and the ground cable was the issue, but because I dont have a garage and here in canada is already sub zero, replacing going under the car is a nightmare, and then your video appeared, now is fixed in 5 min. Our once a year family trip to Florida during Christmas time is not canceled now. Thank you sir!
I wonder if a 90 degree AAN swivel fitting would be work better off that low pressure filter? I wish I saw this a week ago! Just had the oil filter housing/intake off last week on my 17' N47 328d. I could see this being pretty tight in that area for the N47. Did they put the N57 TT diesel in the 328d in Europe? That would be a beast! Thanks for sharing BMW diesel content. It helped me a lot the past few weeks. 🤘
I'm sure AN fitting would be nice, but keep in mind, this is a 'plug and play' kit for the general public. There is no such thing as a 328d over in Europe. Only North American got the 328d. In Europe they badged them as 320d. The TT n47 was in the 1 series and a 5 series diesel. The 6 cylinder twin turbos were 535d and x5 40d over there. They also put them in other vehicles that I am not listing too.

Yes they do. But it's not as simple as I just made it sound.
@@bradtourt you should do a video on that next time, ive thought about moving to a 535d but i would miss the power of the 335d. i understand you would also need the rest of the fuel from a eu tt car?
Yes, you actually need a lot more than just the fuel system too. The valve cover is also different. It's a lot of little parts to make it a tt setup.
