I'm Drew Johnson & my goal is to help new beekeepers discover a hobby that will hopefully be with them for years, or better yet, the rest of their lives. I am here first to help you all viewers with any questions you have regarding beekeeping and hopefully I can answer it! I am also here because I am passionate about keeping/taking care of bees and ensuring their survival for our ecosystem.
I am a US Army veteran and former law enforcement officer who has finally found the thing I know is my calling. This channel will go into the good and the bad that a beekeeper can encounter. I also hope to review equipment, go over pest treatment, and tips and tricks that I have picked up over my time in this hobby.
Follow me on this journey and hopefully we can help each other out along the way!

Well, I no longer have access to Apiary yard #1. This is unfortunate as it the yard I learned to keep bees on and my best memories of getting into this hobby began here. I have since the last video consolidated my hives across the other three yards. In other news I have been busy making lots of splits and this video is just checking in on the status of that in preparation of the nectar flow. 0:...

Swarm Caught?? Success and Failures (Beekeeping)
Looks like most of them weathered that cold well. I think everyone's bees are teenagers with the way they are eating this Winter.👍
@@dcsblessedbees * I got to see your beekeeping subscription list. You get around!🫠
They didn't starve? Some of mine had food but couldn't find it 😢
Howamy bees do you think get squished when putting g the pollen collector on?
Does the pollen grid need to come all the way out?
Can you tell me where you got your sugar syrup container that you fill your feeder with?
www.cabelas.com/shop/en/scepter-5-gal-military-style-water-container?ds_e=MICROSOFT&ds_c=Cabelas%7CShopping%7CSmart%7CBoating%7CGeneral%7CNAud%7CNVol%7CNMT&gclid=1245a5b736a619adb56fc2ff53b34700&gclsrc=3p.ds&msclkid=1245a5b736a619adb56fc2ff53b34700

@@PeabodysApiary Good eye! I def missed her during this inspection
Pretty Property.👍
Yes very thankful to the property owners to be able to keep some hives there.
Could I ask what you use in your smoker thanks
Yes, primarily whatever pieces of wood, pine needles, etc that I can find laying around.
Much more fun to make bees instead of honey.
@@timlewis9873 couldn’t agree more!
Hope you keep making videos. Just watching another beekeeper manipulate hives and talk about challenges is always good
👍👍👍
one thing about people who don't know how to wear a baseball cap and put it on backwards, don't know if they are coming or going
Looks good!
Can you keep honey supers on?
While you could I do not recommend. Unless you are leaving those honey supers on for the bees to consume any honey within. Apiguard is going to make the honey taste off if you try to harvest those supers for human consumption. It is best done after supers are pulled.
Nice
I could hear green piping
Watch the Bug Farmer to see how to build the beetle vac.
Yes he and I have been in communication ever since I first posted the video. His video helped me a lot. Thanks for the watch!
Try putting little hard peppermint candies 4 or 5 per hive on top of your frames. It sure lowered my hive Beatle count. Thanks for your videos.
Yes this is the first season I’m testing out the peppermint candies. I’ll be curious to see how they work. Thank you for the watch!
Do you mind sharing your county
Forsyth county
Hi Drew, New subscriber here. If you're considering the Beetle Vac here is the build video. The base parts list is in the description: ua-cam.com/video/Of_G36a79Ww/v-deo.html
Hello thank you! Actually I had watched your video not that long ago and bought a vacuum that was somewhat similar. I wish I bought the exact model you show in your description because the one I got is not super strong but does still vacuum beetles. Thank you for the watch and I just subscribed to you as well!
Regarding your split, did you see walking drones?
For the split in the video, I did not see walking drones but saw drone brood which should be hatching within next week or two.
Ok. I think the drones need a few days after emergence to mature. I hope it works out for you but I think you may be a coupla weeks early. I hope I am wrong. Good luck!
@@rtxhoneybees a few of the hives I have in that yard and in yards nearby have some drones already walking around. There just weren’t any walking drones in the hive the split is happening with. Might be too early but I think it’s going to be close either way. Only time will tell.
Do it at night when they aren’t flying.
Seeing the dead bees that froze was so sad! I thought seeing how you split that hive was very good. What month will you start taking some honey?
Yes very sad. Hoping honey will be collected in early/mid june pending on how the flow goes this year.
Glad to see most of your colonies are thriving 🐝💜 good luck this Spring and with the swarm season!
Thank you!
Do you still have them? Any change, warp, rupture?
Yep they have stayed strong no issues on my end. Only warp I’ve had has been due to using an oxalic acid vaporizer which will melt the plastic near the entrance. Aside from that, very pleased with the apimaye bottoms.
What part of Georgia , I'm trying to start a small hive for my own honey and I can't find local bees brood, can u help??
I am north/central Georgia just north of Metro Atlanta
Wonderful ♥️👍👍 Awesome upload 👌 Liking this one !!! This was amazing 👏 🙌 😍 ❤️
When you’ve apiguard in the past have you ever experience a break in the laying by the queen.? If so, how long did it last?
I have and normally it lasts 7-10 days. This can be a problem if your hive is being attacked by pests like hive beetles and moths since the population won't be able to defend as well.
@@drewbeesapiary5452Thanks for your reply. Two of my queens stopped laying after I started the treatment. I was really worried. They are laying again and the brood patterns are nice. I was so relieved after my last inspection.
@@mgmbamaguy Glad to hear it! It is often scary when it is hard to tell if the queen absconded or not due to the treatment. I had a few happen like that a month ago as well.
Don't give up on them , Here in Louisiana I have had queens come back late October even , now they might not be mated the best but enough to get the hive through till spring and you can just requeen if so. Good luck.
I have three beehive. I love it
I have a lot of hive beetles also, Ive lost a lot of hives to what I taught were hive beetles but it was cause they had some sort of virus from mites and failed to keep numbers up and when they get to small the hive beetles take over. Also I have good luck with real swifter sheets the beetles seem to get stuck easy without the bees having to fluff up the sheets, I also put the new beetle traps that you can remove the tops , clean and reuse , I put combat as bait , its a gel that sticks to the bottom and the bees can't get to it, I hate using the oil , I always forget and spill the oil on the bees when I pull off a box. Good luck with those beetles I feel your pain.👍👍👍
Good bee show and tell!
Hi sir I am from Bangladesh your country 🥰
Why do you feed with a Queen Excluder on and a honey super above? You are making sugar honey
The queen excluder is leave on during the warm months as it makes my inane too a quicker plus I like to keep my queens laying in the bottom brood box and not in the supers above. I do not know what you mean when you say “you are making sugar honey”. The sugar water I am feeding the bees is to get them through the dearth and so they can build up their stores for winter.
@@drewbeesapiary5452 I guess you are using your honey supers as stores for the bee, not to sell honey
@@daisyshoney6021that is correct. The rest of the year any honey made and stored is for the bees, not to sell.
If you didn’t give them sugar water wouldn’t they work harder/fly farther to find food?
Only if it is available. They will almost always want the natural stuff first but during lean times they will take the sugar water solution.
Watering can.
Is it true you can attach a bees nest to the end of a sword and make a bee sword that swarms your enemies with every swing?
It's ending...it is almost June.
pull the pollen screen in the morning before the bees begin foraging. It is what i do and have never incurred any bees caught in the board
I would pull it at night. Or maybe try closing the front and smoking the bottom board to get the bees to move up into the hive.
Leftover bees tend to congregate or these are bees from a feral hive robbing wax.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for the watch
To sort the guillotine problem out you need to smoke them from the back, through the pollen/varroa tray opening.
Is that for a 8 frame or 10 frame box
Those are for 10 frame equipment.
Swarm cells make some of the best queens.
Couldn't agree more!
I am assuming the white traps are for beetles. How do you like them? Where did you get them?
Are you referring to the white landing boards near the front of the hives? If so those are part of the Apimaye bottom board system. They are easily the best bottom board on the market just a little expensive. I just want to make sure I am tracking the same thing.
Could be your virgin red queen didn't make it back from her madin flight.
Great video!
Great video!

I have 2 or 3 up. Have new drones. Way early but we get ready or wish we had
