The Cyberpunk Red: Jumpstart Kit has one of the best starter modules out there, so I'd throw that on your "to buy" pile. Tombpunk by Alan Bahr is my favorite of the OSR-adjacent, rules-lite fantasy games. And then I don't think I saw Hull Breach in your Mothership collection, and that's a solid A+ book, especially if you want to see a multi-creator adventure anthology done right.
This was wonderful. I'm definitely running some Pirate Borg soon.
So many coooool books!
Electric Bastionland is my favorite book and I would have taken it everywhere with me if it were A5
Oh Star Wars WEG!
Star Wars so cool!
DCC so cool!
Dragonbane!
Im trying out pirate borg for the first time and I'm running the game. I am a little confused on gaining experience. Does it mean after every encounter they gain some or is it after doing something big? I'm running curse at skeleton point so when should I have my players gain experience?
Is it possible to adapt this to play solo by any chance?
Is it possible to use these rules in a Pathfinder 2E campaign?
Amazing vídeo and info!!
has Andrew ever read any Vurt and its sequels by Jeff Noon? One of them is titled Automated Alice. Very bizarre psychedelic fantasy-cyberpunk that is very influenced by Through the Looking Glass. Its definitely not for everyone but the setting is great, there is a Cypher System game using it called Vurt.
I instantly liked you when I heard you basically say Less rules = more fun. Had a player try to be a GM and started adding his own clunky magic system to the 5th Edition game. Put me to sleep.
So interesting that Luke just played his first game of CoC with all the Mythos in Pirate Borg! I've been struggling to learn 7th edition after I taught all my players the streamlined joy of 2nd! So many rules now...
My Lovecraft background is more with his fiction, and with Fantasy Flight stuff like Mansions of Madness, Arkham Horror LCG, Elder Sign, Eldritch Horror.
I own all three of Andrew's books and they are all 11/10 beautiful pieces of work. The content is amazing, the layouts are perfections, and the flavor is unbelievable. I dream of running a Wonderland campaign someday. Thanks for having him on the show!!
Man, I am a new sub and have listened to probably 10 podcasts so far the past couple of days, regardless of topic and more people need to be listening! this is a great podcast!
I've combined Pirate Borg with More Borg, so the "rot" is spreading in more than one location. Sweden has drifted away from the rest of Europe and away from reality. I love having a setting that is based on our world (in the mid-17th century) rather than a more trad fantasy setting.
Luke 48:25 that hit so Hard and I Agree, thanks for the inspiration
Great episode! Horror RPGs can be cozy if players embrace two ideas. 1. Bad stuff should happen to their character (do read evil tome, do go into scary basement) and 2. Treat the bad consequence as genuine
The shanty: "You can check in but you can never leave" Eagles Hotel California.
absolutely awesome session here!
Moustache Mike!
In terms of atmosphere, uneasiness and horror, I HIGHLY recommend "A Lush and Seething Hell: Two Tales of Cosmic Horror", by John Hornor Jacobs. I think about that book a couple of times a week, at least. I love Call of Cthulhu. Chaosium is dealing with the line in a excellent way. Pulp Cthulhu has been a revolution to the game, not because it incorporates a tonal shift to regular games, but because it doesn't have to. You can just use core changes (Luck, Major Wounds, Hit Points...) to vainilla CoC and play in the 20's with some hope of enjoying a campaign all the way through. The best argument to play CoC still are its excellent modules and campaigns, crafted with such care and taste. Two Headed Serpent was a slam dunk, and the new Masks of Nyarlathotep is just superior to anything similar in the market (not just in the CoC game). That's why Cthulhu by Gaslight needs its own exemplary campaign, just like Two Headed Serpent was for Pulp Cthulhu. Anyway, I'm rambling. I just love Call of Cthulhu, and we are extremely lucky that Chaosium is in charge of that game line.
Fantastic collection Luke. I did not see Castles and Crusades Troll Lord games guys are cool I did some VTT map conversion for them. Nothing From Kobold Press either I like their Tales of the Valiant. Keep it up and HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎆
You need a Judges Guild section.
I heard people talking about Cairn like a year ago and I scoffed at it, but then I read it after watching another interview with Yochai Gal and was blown away.
That. Was. Great. love seeing some crossover from my collection. Also Black and Red! I dig digging through the piles. Thanks for sharing!
Haha! I ran the Star Wars beginner box for your brother a few months ago!
Amazing. I probably won't ever run it because I have a draft of my own Star Wars CY_BORG hack called SEE YOU IN HELL...
@@limithron OH MAN! If you come out to run it for your brother, pass an invite ;P But yes to be perfectly honest, I think that particular Box Set is the weakest of the three. If you were ever going to give it a shot to test the system, I would try the Edge of the Empire box and then later play around with force stuff.
Noice!!!
How often do you end up printing PDFs? You mentioned Lulu, is that the main one you use? Are there others?
Only that one time for Yuin-suin since I bought the PDF and the first printing was out of print and 2e hasn’t shipped yet.
Hey Luke! What books/systems do you recommend to showcase what really makes an RPG tick? I’ve been playing off and on for about 15 years, but there are still times when I don’t feel like I “grasp” the concepts in some games the way I should, or I don’t utilize mechanics properly, etc. Would love to see more “how to” stuff from you, I really love your style and approach to tabletop!
Check out Worlds Without Number by Kevin Crawford. It’s an OSR book, but he really walks you through how to run a session and a campaign.
That is a great collection! Thank you for sharing.
It was my pleasure
I am very interested in seeing a video on your model GM kit that you posted to X.
I’m actually playing through In Other Waters now lol! I’m like 3 hours in and it’s a spectacular game, definitely inspiring the underwater stuff I’m working on right now. I conveniently also got the Mothership Deluxe Box for the holidays, so I’m really excited to pick up Tidebreak when I get the chance!
I believe the sub-genre is called "Wet Mothership". I LOVE Subnautica, so I'm all the way in.
Finding Thousand Thousand Islands stuff now is super-hard, since their partnership fell apart pretty catastrophically. Maybe I missed it, but I'm surprised you don't have Stygian Library or Gardens of Ynn in your library, both as very cool adventures but for their adventure-writing structure. I could definitely see the depth-crawl model being applied to the a weird wavecrawl adventure.
I’m getting both in the latest Kickstarter!
CONTINUE, PLEASE! This has been the best quickest education on RPGs I've gotten in a long while, maybe ever. (I need Professor DM and Ben Milton to do similar videos right now.)
What else do you want me to deep dive on?
@ I’ve rewatched your reference shelves at the end a few times and backed up to your Mork Borg, etc shelf a few times. Now I have a list of things to buy soon. I was left with two questions: What’s on your fiction shelf (besides On Stranger Tides, of course)? And What rules and story building (game design) references are your must-haves or were the biggest influences on Pirate Borg (beyond Mork Borg, of course)? Not sure it’s a video but might be a subsection of a Ship of the Dead podcast (unless you’ve already done that and I haven’t gotten to it yet).
This is incredible content. I backed Pirate Borg and love it. So cool to peek behind the scenes to see some of your inspiration. Would love to have Veins of the Earth in print... maybe someday. Loved the Mothership stack. My shout out would be to check out Shadow of the Demon Lord. Grim dark as hell. Cool character progression designed for shorter campaigns. Edit: definitely made it to the end. Would have continued to listen to you talk about your collection indefinitely! Happy new year!
A new edition of Veins in the Earth is apparently going to be on Kickstarter in 2025.
@@BeauYarbrough I think the PDF is on sale right now.
hello, thank you very much for sharing i would like a list of art books to use at the table with my pirate borg players. I recently bought death in space and vast grimm and couldn't I get something to inspire me. the only condition is that it has to be available on amazon.
All the ones at the start of the video are perfect for this!
This video will cost me a lot of time and money. I love it! Edited to added that I ordered a bunch of JP Coovert. I had never heard of them. Looks great
Happy to be of service hahaha
Made it to the end! I did slow it down and freeze the alchemy station because that’s a bit of a curiosity. I thought for a while there that Shadowdark wasn’t in your collection. Quite the assemblage. Thanks for sharing and 🎉Happy New Year. Got to play Pirate Borg at PAX Unplugged and bought everything my budget would allow. (Still thinking about that mat.)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice collection :) you might like Delta Green. It's like Call of Cthulhu but in modern times. Has a feel of True Detective and X-Files. (otherwise it seems you already have every rpg I've ever heard of :D) and is there a book you recommend for someone who just started drawing?
I didn't start with one but I'm working through "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" and "Bridgeman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life", both of which are great places to start if you are taking it seriously!
Looks a lot like my shelves :)
I wonder why hahaha
Surprised you don't have any Freeport stuff. Pirate guide to Freeport, the system less book is my favorite rpg book ever.
I've just never own any Pathfinder stuff... even thought I know they ported some of it. I'm also less into "fantasy meets pirates". I'm sure it's great though and I need to check it out!
They've done 3E, systemless and Pathfinder editions of the core setting book over the years (each at different points in time in the setting's timeline). The systemless book is excellent.
Sorry for the re-upload everyone! This one should be HD!
Already preordered the Starter Set, DATD, and Cabin Fever. Also cannot wait for Dark Caribbean!!
Excellent! Thank you!
Would you do it for ShadowDark? Also, would you consider including the Taino civilization some how?
Tyler the Quartermaster here: We've talked about doing a Shadowdark version, but current not planning on it (that could change!) And Luke reads a lot about the different cultures of the Caribbean. The Masoin faction is all those cultures combined into one. (Theres story reasons why). So stay tuned on patreon to see more!
@limithron Thank you!
See I realise I just spent like 400 euros on the KS but please, do the next one soon haha!
A pirates life for you indeed! Working hard.
Punch out mtg cards for tokens. Or, use a pack as an adventure prompt
There is a hole podcast episode about this with Ben Milton! ua-cam.com/video/JmcuOghxYVc/v-deo.htmlsi=TnU8EPH6Em1-vVcT
I've already spent your KS money 😂
ahoy! and Merry Christmas
Same to you!
Fury's a great fighter, but Usyk is an all-time great fighter.
I can't stand the googly eyed cute theme on all the print outs. It's like the D&D artist had just worked for Disney and never played D&D
Yeah it was a bold choice.
Americans think they are the only ones
I enjoy playing the cyberskin. Mine goes by the name Ronnie Raygun.
