Try this Side Bend from Think Somatics with Kristin Jackson
Howdy friend! Quite often I see folks do the side bend with little movement of the actual hips/pelvis. In one of my recent Zoom Somatics classes, we explored sensing where our sits bones are and using our waist muscles to move the pelvis AND sits bones. Folks in the live classes found this exploration very helpful, even though they have done the side bend a gazillion times before.
If you are new to Somatics and don't know the side bend, here it is ua-cam.com/video/vbuuv2Hh3S8/v-deo.html Please do that video before this one.
I hope you find this variation of the Somatics side bend helpful. If so, please let me know in the comments below! That'll help me develop more videos for you. Make a request.

      I can't make any guarantees, especially since I can't see you, but a combination of Somatics and PPR could help. There are many factors that cause knock knees. When you practice PPR see if you can sense more of the back of your inner thigh engaging, so your knees point more towards the ceiling than inward towards each other. Let me know how it goes!

    I have torticollis and symptoms that mimic cervical dystonia. I have almost no control of my left scm when I am standing completely still. Will this work for me? also I plan on getting botox here in a month, will that hinder or help the process thanks

    • @kristinj1518
      @kristinj1518 10 місяців тому

      From the Somatics perspective, torticollis is a form of SMA. Your brain has lost voluntary control of your muscles. Will Somatics help you? Likely it can. How long you have had torticollis, what you do with your whole body and neck between your Somatics practice time will influence the effectiveness and the speed of recovery time. Botox causes muscle paralysis, so that would hinder your ability to do Somatics effectively. You wouldn't be able to sense your neck. I'm not sure how paralysing your neck muscles would get them to relax out of contraction. . . Also, your neck muscles aren't working alone. There is likely some sort of full body contraction pattern that tips your skull/neck. So just having your neck worked on limits your long term results. For what it's worth, I worked with a client with cervical dystonia. She had tons of botox injections and they weren't effective. You are welcome to meet with me online for a private lesson if you like. Of if you are in the Western NC area we can do a private session in person in Waynesville NC where I practice. thinksomatics.weebly.com/private-lessons.html

    Is there a pandiculation to heal Tennis elbow (which is tendinitis, not muscular)?

    • @trainerkristinPDX
      @trainerkristinPDX Рік тому

      Hi Jill, Somatics (pandiculations) aren't intended to just address parts of the body, like an elbow, knee, hip, etc. The movements I have here on my channel-- check the Daily Supplement playlist-- should help you. We want to release tension through out the body, which will influence how the arms, shoulders and elbows (all of you!) move and relax. Your muscles are attached to your tendons, so releasing your muscle tension (sensory motor amnesia) can help. From there, you can focus in on your sore areas too. Sense what your arms, shoulders, wrists, hands feel like. What does the "good" feel like vs the sore one? What do you sense when you do the full body pandiculations, like arch and flatten, or wash rag in your elbows? Do they move? Do your shoulders and wrists and hands move? What about when you move your hips, or your feet? What do you notice about your upper body? Let me know if that helps you out! You are welcome to do a Zoom session with me if you like. I can help you more if I can actually see you. 🙂 thinksomatics.weebly.com/private-lessons.html

      Hi Ashley, I'm glad you found Somatics. Since I can't see you, I can't say for sure what exactly is happening with your and your body when doing the everting the the foot. And even I could see you, I don't sense what you sense. I could make an educated guess, but pain, PTSD, movement, trauma are woven together and can take time to unravel. Here are some thoughts tho. PTSD and trauma are not just in the brain or just in the body. The brain and body are just two sides of the same coin. From personal experience I have had emotional responses to particular pandiculations. I realized that certain movements patterns were taking me into the exact physical responses my body went into back when I was hit by a car while riding my bike. Connecting those things, and realizing I was safe, and was able to let go of the tension helped me process my physical tension and PTSD. I'm not saying this is what's happening with you, but might be something to consider and explore. Are you working with a somatic-based mental health provider? Can you work with them to help you with the spasms? Can you imagine doing the movement with ease and not going into spasm? (this is called motor planning. Here's a blog post about that www.takeitoutsidefitness.com/2019/07/motor-plan-your-somatics-moves.html) Let me know if this helps you. Take good care. ~Kristin

    Thank you for your explanation! I had a general idea of the purpose of somatics and pandiculation, but now I really understand. I can wrap my head around the idea of contracting muscles and releasing them in a slow and controlled way. I'm still a little unsure of what I need to pay attention to while I'm doing the movements. My brain still largely operates on the concept of exercise (repetition, challenge, etc.), though I have learned to tune into my body through yoga.

      Think of Somatics as the ultimate "bottom up" method to get rid of pain and suffering. Meaning that the body has a lot to say and we should tune in and listen, avoid overly thinking (top down) things. We adult humans seem to over analyse things. Get out of your head and into your body. It will change your brain in time. 🙂

    Isn't this the same thing from the 60's they called back then "isometric" exercises?

    • @trainerkristinPDX
      @trainerkristinPDX Рік тому

      Nope, they are not the same at all. Isometrics is a bracing and holding tension in the muscles. There is little movement (range of motion) while doing isometrics. It actually is the complete opposite of pandiculations, the movements of Somatics. Pandiculations are gentle contractions into tension and slow, mindful releases. They release tension so your muscles can return to their natural resting length without force, stretching or strengthening. Isometics, because they are stiff and held without ROM, can cause stiffness and shorten the muscles. They can also raise blood pressure and make you sore. Again, the complete opposite of Somatics. Try doing some of the videos in my Daily Supplement playlist and sense for yourself. Watching Somatics videos is not the same as doing Somatics. 🙂ua-cam.com/users/playlist?app=desktop&list=PLtKCmLtPXzEyO2ukQo2osfbw0j_I4VlEi

    • @kristinj2507
      @kristinj2507 Рік тому

      Hi Khadija, No, pandiculations, the movements of Somatics, are not strengthening exercises. They are pandiculations which are neither stretching or strengthening exercises. They are movements to address sensory motor amnesia. They should release tension in your body, not just your neck, so you take back voluntary control of your body and muscles. Side note: My clients report that they are stronger in their workouts now that they do Somatics. Even after the first time of doing Somatics. Not to be snarky, but what are neck strengthening exercises anyway? 😁 If your alignment in your body is good, your neck and head should simply balance at the top of your spine with ease. Tightening muscles around the neck limit range of motion. No es bueno. ;-) To really address your question and particular needs you should work with a Somatic Educator, either online or in person, to really understand where your SMA is, and how best to address it. Private sessions can be very helpful, and unlike body work, generally just a 1 to a few Somatics sessions should help. In the long run, a big money and time saver!

    I tried this today. For about 10 minutes after I felt a lovely tingling across my shoulder blades like they woke up, the move felt so nice in my arms too. Unfortunately didn’t last too long but I will continue… thanks

      Glad you enjoyed it! To get lasting effects of Somatics it needs to be practiced regularly. Your current patterns that cause you pain are well engrained in your nervous system. Practicing healthier movement patterns need to be practiced regularly to "overwrite" the faulty ones. The faulty ones don't go away. They just become weaker as the good ones become stronger.

    How to pandiculate the space between scapula? :)

    • @kristinj1518
      @kristinj1518 2 роки тому

      We don't just focus on parts of the body in Somatics. The movement and position of your pelvis, back, leg bones, the turnout of a foot, your neck, even the tipping of your head, EVERYTHING will move your scapulae to some degree. So you need a full body routine. Flower, back lift, side bend, washrag are good ones to start with. Enjoy!

    How do you this with a muscle that is tight? Isn’t it counterproductive?

    • @kristinj1518
      @kristinj1518 2 роки тому

      You might think so, but stretching your muscles actually makes them tighter. You may feel temporary relief, but it's short lived. Somatic pandiculations reset the muscle length by you becoming more aware of what you are doing so you can change your patterns. I'll bet you haven't tried Somatics yet. ;-) Don't force or work hard at the movements. Breathe. Take time to sense what you are actually doing. Also, no muscle is working by itself. Somatics addresses your whole body. Be sure you aren't in a "vice" meaning you aren't contracting opposing areas of your body as you tighten the focus side, such as gripping and tightening your abs as you arch your back. Enjoy!

    Brilliant, so much better to do this seated instead of lying down. Finally getting the hang of it, thank you so much 😘

      Thanks Helene! Glad you find it helpful. Have you tried it standing up? You can put your hand on a chair or wall to help you balance as you explore inverting and everting the feet standing. . . .maybe I need to make another video! 🙂

    Is there a way to do pandiculations to progressively relax the ciliary muscle so we can see distant objects? (Reverse myopia)

    • @kristinj1518
      @kristinj1518 2 роки тому

      Many people have improved vision with somatic modalities. Gently open and closing the eyes could be a good place to start. When I teach classes we sometimes incorporate eye movements (with neck and face movements) and students report in seeing more clearly. Good luck with your self exploration! You could work with me in a private session or sign up for streaming lessons on my website. www.thinksomatics.com

      @@kristinj1518 ...thanks. What is the reason you incorporate eye movements into the face and neck movements? How does closing ajd opening the eyelids help with the ciliary muscle? It siphons energy from it? Thanks!

    From the description given here it sounds like pandiculation is a lot like PNF in the contract/controlled release cycle.

    • @kristinj1518
      @kristinj1518 2 роки тому

      Yes, it can seem that way. But PNF is a stretching modality. Pandiculations are not stretches. We don't push and force a muscle to lengthen, which in the long run, makes muscles return to their original tension patterns. Pandiculations address full-body reflexive responses to stress and threats instead of of focusing on areas of the body. PNF generally focuses on parts of the body, one at a time. If you haven't tried Somatics yet, the best way to understand it, is to do it! 🙂

    Hello there, I've had this problem for 5 years now and how it happened I don't know... I started getting a slight ringing in my right ear with a feeling of fullness with eustachian tube dysfunction, anyways after years of not knowing what was going on I've finally come to a conclusion with the help of a physio, he said my right hip was locked which has caused all my right side to tighten and shorten, oh and I completely tore my ACL on my right leg as well but since had surgery to fix it.... anyways, since I started doing the exorcises to unlock the hip the ear has gotten better also do hot pilates once a week which I think helps also, but it's not fully fixed and I can feel my neck, upper back, chest and ear still off, like when I swollow it's like the muscles on the right side of my throat don't work the same as the left and feel slightly stuck.... I guess my question is - Will pandiculation help to get me back to normal/center?
