Julia McKenzie: from MISS MARPLE to a Bond Girl in her 70s
The sweety steely Miss Marple began her career as a singing star of popular musicals. She reinvented herself and became a Bond Girl and Queen Elizabeth’s Body Double in her 70s! She was the last British actress to step into the role of Agatha Christie’s spinster sleuth and managed to make a mark of her own. This video is about the fascinating life story of Julia McKenzie.

Why did Geraldine McEwan stop playing Miss Marple?
Переглядів 25 тис.Місяць тому
A more modern Miss Marple, The Twinkly Miss Marple, The 21st century Miss Marple - all these catch phrases are firmly attributed to the very special impersonation of this iconic character by this British actress with an elfin face and baby voice. Agatha Christie’s female sleuth brought her worldwide fame in her 70s, yet, shockingly, she decided to quit the signature part when at the peak. Why s...

You need to update the title of this short, unless you intend it as clickbait. Which you can see from some comments has worked 😂
This narrator sounds slightly loopy. And why call Anna Massey Anna Macy?
Kulak Spaniel
There is only one Hercule Poirot and thats David Suchet! As one who have read all the stories he fits the role to perfection :-)
Ok I give up I loved them all ❤
Tatiana, Anastasia, and Maria and Alexei were the ones to survive. Saddened by this.
David Suchet my only forever Mr Poirot ❤
Such a great person ❤
As everybody said, Suchet is the only Poirot.
So it was only the prince and the dog who survived
Brilliant David suchet! Best Poirot ever!
Excellent actress but Joan Hickson was for me the best Miss Marple.
Great story!
thank you, Marina
thank you, Marina
Apparently Agatha Christie saw her playing a minor role in one of Margaret Rutherford’s Marple films, and is supposed to have prophesied that she would make a great Marple when she aged.
What led you to the last being Gertrude Stein?
Anastasiia is my name 😂
I was surprised to find out the Philip Jackson is in the "Take On Me" videclip.
your pronunciation of "Joan" is distracting and annoying
No one can match Joan - though they keep on trying
Is Melania Trump related to Anastasia? Is Melania the Queen Of Russia now? Putin shows Melania great respect when he greets her.
Basil Ratherborne
Thank you for yet another lovely story - although Julia was not one of my favourite Marple's. Great actress though
Absolutely love Suchet as Poirot. Got a bit of a shock when I saw an interview with him and realized that he had a totally different voice and manners as himself. He was so convincing, he really WAS Poirot on screen.
I think I liked Geraldine the best because she was cute and funny and seemed so deceivingly innocent and naive until she pulled the lever. Then also Julia because she makes such a friendly and empathic Marple.
It's Peter Ustinov for me and then David
Certainly not Margaret Rutherford, with her many chins bobbing and weaving.
David Suchet is the best one
The worse Poirot was Kenneth Branagh. Just awful.
TOO MUCH WRITING ON THE SCREEN.
Loved this video! So informative and engaging! Thank you.
I’ll tell you why she stopped…. It is because she was completely out of her depth playing the role, constantly slurring her words and needing prompting, but worst of all she was a woman of ill repute carrying on an intrigue with a married soldier.
Joan Hickson!! By far will always be the greatest one!
Love your stories
The very worst Miss Marple
Angela langsbury is so beautiful and spectacular one of my favourite actresses, they don’t make actresses like the great Angela langsbury any more…she’s so talented and absolutely amazing such beauty and wonderful she’s stunningly gorgeous ❤😊xx
If you haven't seen Albert Finney's 'tour de force' performance of Hercule Poirot which Garner an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor in a Film(he did not win) in the 1974 film by Sidney Lumet's "Murder on the Orient Express" with an All-Star International Cast: Ingrid Bergman who was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress, we she indeed won. Lauren Bacall, Sean Connery, Martin Balsam, Jacqueline Bisset, Michael York, Anthony Perkins, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Wendy Hillary, Richard Widmark, Rachael Roberts, Jean - Pierre Cassel, Dennis Quilley, Colin Blakely and George Coulouris. Great Movie, Great Cast......GREAT ACTOR ALBERT FINNEY AS HERCULE POIROT! If you haven't seen it, find a copy, it'll intensify your 'little gray cells' 🔎 🥸
Loved joan hickson she was the best 👌
chaarles should not be king.
I like Romeo and Cinderella
She actually was my favorite Miss Marple.
I just flew back from Paris yesterday, to the US. I watched the whole first season of the gilded age on the flight. This was quite a treat to find your channel. Thank you for sharing.n I quite enjoyed!
So happy to read your comment, thank you! Hope you had a charming time in Paris
I agree with you, that Poirot and Marple are masters in their their own pursuits , but it’s still is an interesting thought to discuss over a cup of tea or tisane. ☕️
As Jeremy Brett is the definitive Sherlock, so Joan Hickson is the definitive miss Marple.
Well, I agree David is the only one that fits the part
Joan Hickson played her best and was Ms Christie's own choice. I disliked Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie's portrayals. Ms McEwan was too loud and smug and both of them were too annoyingly smirking all the time. I thought I was probably the only person annoyed by it but I've looked this up on the internet and quite a few other people found their smirking annoying as well. I just could not imagine Miss Marple smirking as they did! Or looking so pleased with herself. I actually found their Marples rather unpleasant people. Also, I found both actresses to have rather grating voices not conducive to encouraging confidences. Joan Hickson's soothing voice was ideal for getting people's secrets out of them.
Because she bowed to well-justified negative public opinion and realized she wasn’t right for the role…A brilliant actress but NOT Miss Marple.
What about Julia McKenzie?
I don't look ke her as much as Joan Hickson's, her Miss Marple always seems to have a smirking, sardonic look. I prefer Joan's sweeter, gentler exterior with a sharp mind underneath.
