Julia McKenzie: from MISS MARPLE to a Bond Girl in her 70s
The sweety steely Miss Marple began her career as a singing star of popular musicals. She reinvented herself and became a Bond Girl and Queen Elizabeth’s Body Double in her 70s! She was the last British actress to step into the role of Agatha Christie’s spinster sleuth and managed to make a mark of her own. This video is about the fascinating life story of Julia McKenzie.

Why did Geraldine McEwan stop playing Miss Marple?
Переглядів 25 тис.Місяць тому
A more modern Miss Marple, The Twinkly Miss Marple, The 21st century Miss Marple - all these catch phrases are firmly attributed to the very special impersonation of this iconic character by this British actress with an elfin face and baby voice. Agatha Christie’s female sleuth brought her worldwide fame in her 70s, yet, shockingly, she decided to quit the signature part when at the peak. Why s...

Apparently Agatha Christie saw her playing a minor role in one of Margaret Rutherford’s Marple films, and is supposed to have prophesied that she would make a great Marple when she aged.

Absolutely love Suchet as Poirot. Got a bit of a shock when I saw an interview with him and realized that he had a totally different voice and manners as himself. He was so convincing, he really WAS Poirot on screen.

I think I liked Geraldine the best because she was cute and funny and seemed so deceivingly innocent and naive until she pulled the lever. Then also Julia because she makes such a friendly and empathic Marple.

I’ll tell you why she stopped…. It is because she was completely out of her depth playing the role, constantly slurring her words and needing prompting, but worst of all she was a woman of ill repute carrying on an intrigue with a married soldier.

If you haven't seen Albert Finney's 'tour de force' performance of Hercule Poirot which Garner an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor in a Film(he did not win) in the 1974 film by Sidney Lumet's "Murder on the Orient Express" with an All-Star International Cast: Ingrid Bergman who was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress, we she indeed won. Lauren Bacall, Sean Connery, Martin Balsam, Jacqueline Bisset, Michael York, Anthony Perkins, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Wendy Hillary, Richard Widmark, Rachael Roberts, Jean - Pierre Cassel, Dennis Quilley, Colin Blakely and George Coulouris. Great Movie, Great Cast......GREAT ACTOR ALBERT FINNEY AS HERCULE POIROT! If you haven't seen it, find a copy, it'll intensify your 'little gray cells' 🔎 🥸

Joan Hickson played her best and was Ms Christie's own choice. I disliked Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie's portrayals. Ms McEwan was too loud and smug and both of them were too annoyingly smirking all the time. I thought I was probably the only person annoyed by it but I've looked this up on the internet and quite a few other people found their smirking annoying as well. I just could not imagine Miss Marple smirking as they did! Or looking so pleased with herself. I actually found their Marples rather unpleasant people. Also, I found both actresses to have rather grating voices not conducive to encouraging confidences. Joan Hickson's soothing voice was ideal for getting people's secrets out of them.

I don't look ke her as much as Joan Hickson's, her Miss Marple always seems to have a smirking, sardonic look. I prefer Joan's sweeter, gentler exterior with a sharp mind underneath.
