  • The harsh competition between the bastion of old money - the Academy of Music - and the newly built harbour of the nouveau riches - the Metropolitan Opera - and even a sort of war between their loyal backers have taken center stage in the second season of The Gilded Age series by HBO.
Curiously, it mirrors the real-life clash between the society queen Mrs. Astor and Alva Vanderbilt, the wife of railroad heir William Kissam Vanderbilt, on whom Bertha Russell is based. In this video, you will learn the story of the opera snub and how it all actually happened!

I've never seen 'The Gilded Age'; but anything to do with opera has my attention. My favourite exciting opera story is that they were worried there might be a bomb scare at the opening of 'Tosca', and the orchestra had to be prepared to play the national anthem to get people out of the theatre.

@@marina_via I think it was the Italian government? Some important person was going to the opera that night, and there were a lot of political tensions. Not sure how familiar you are with the story of 'Tosca'; it was a play first, and it's set during the Napoleonic wars. So yeah, by the time the opera version of the play was going to premiere, people were already stirred up in the streets, and there were fears of rioting and stuff.
