The Transistor Radio - An Icon of the 1960s - RCA Victor 1T4E- Global GR711 - PYE

Here, I take a little look back at the transistor radio. It would seem that the radio has been surpassed by more modern means of consuming music and information, such as the smartphone and streaming. I look at a few transistor radios in my own collection from the heyday of the transistor set, and reflect on the good old days of radio.

1954 -2024 marks 70 years of iconic radio design, a radio of which is currently known as the Roberts Revival. We start this video by looking at the first 1990s Revival radios and then look back at some vintage Roberts radios from the 1950s and 1960s, on which the Revival series was based. The Revival radio came into being after a TV advertisement for Martini in 1989. In the background of this a...

      Hello, I now have 10 watches purchased from AliExpress in my collection. They arrived in the UK within one week after ordering, bar one, which was hit with a customs charge due to the watch price being over £135. That one took about 10 days after being delayed by UK customs. They have all been dispatched shortly after ordering with full tracking on the AliExpress website. I have found AliExpress to be easy to use. I was initially reluctant to buy from them, but I tested the water with a cheap watch, the one you see in this video, and so far I have no issues with AliExpress, and I am very pleased with my purchases. I did return one watch, which went to a UK depot and a refund was issued in 3 days. Cheers👍

    I have built up an 8 watch collection over the past year and I could not be happier with them. I suspect that, like many, my first Aliexpress special was bought as a "place holder" for an Explorer. Others followed BB, GMT, Sub, Speedy and even a £14 Celebration. I have been extremely surprised that my (<£500 collection) has completely satisfied my lust for watches and I am not remotely interested in buying the real thing. I suspect that collectors like you and I obtain more joy from our watches than those who spend the big bucks on Swiss items.

      It would seem, that many of us have taken the plunge into the AliExpress watch market, with no regrets, and with a very positive experience. I doubt I would ever be in a place to buy a Rolex or any other quality Swiss brand. If I were, given my working-class roots and the need to get the most out of my pound, I would probably buy a San Martin, a classic car, and use any other money saved to treat my wife to an expensive meal, where I could show off my new San Martin watch and classic car. The hardest part with AliExpress is resisting that buy button. Enjoy your watches! Why have one Rolex, when you can have a change of watch for each and every day of the year. Cheers🍻.

    That is in really good condition for the age. There is one on a well known auction site at the moment which someone received as a 40 year long service award back in 1959. Do you know the model number of the other "Personic" model in the brochure?

    • @radiowyn1703
      @radiowyn1703 День тому

      Hello and thank you! Yes, by being preserved in a box and kept away from sunlight the radio still has that new look and feel. My Philips brochure doesn't list a model number for the Personic, but I looked at the online Radio Museum and it is recorded as being model number 'L1G75T'. Both radios date to 1959 having Mullard OC transistors. According to the brochure the Personic came with either a black or blue case and aluminium speaker grille. Thank you for watching! Cheers👍

      I'm sure the original gentleman who received the radio you mentioned for sale online, received after 40 years of service with the same company, would have been very pleased to have been gifted with a modern transistor radio set in 1959. He started work with the company in 1919, the dawn of radio broadcasting in the UK. The radio looks in good condition in red and grey with a gold coloured speaker grille, as listed in my brochure. Just two colours blue or red.

    You selected several of the cooler and more desirable mechanical timepieces in your collection. The low cost quartz ani-digital is a fine daily beater. After I discovered Pagani Design, and then AliExpress.....I now have 17 Pagani Design models, 2 Seestern, 2 AddiesDive, 3 SteelDive, 4 Tandorio, 2 Benyar, 2 high end LIGE divers, and a number of Panerai homages, and low-priced quartz watches. It's either good or bad for a Watch Nerd or collection. :) I had my original watch collection stolen by my ex-wife during the divorce. She was a psychopathic criminal. I lost my Swiss watches, and was left with the Seiko Black Monster that was on my wrist at the time. It took 10 years to get over it and to begin to wear a watch on my wrist again, when my mother passed away and I had to return 'home'. That Seiko rekindled a spark in me. I forgot how much I liked that watch and it ran perfectly after sitting for a decade. Soon after that is when I discovered Pagani Design in the beginning of this year. I was stunned by the level of workmanship and quality. The rest as they say, is history.

    I have several watches off AliExpress. I might stay away from Pagani, there QC is likely the worst of the main homage brands. I’ve had to return several because the crowns didn’t work, or didn’t work for long. I’ve got a V2 of an Explorer II homage, and the enamel on the bezel came off easily. It’s the last 42mm size they, or anyone else, makes of this homage. I tried repeatedly to get a new bezel, either warranty or just buy one. On AliExpress they said they’d send a replacement for a $1, but then the order got canceled and they stopped answering me. On Pagani’s website, they answered, slowly, and over the course of a week or 2, I was eventually told they couldn’t send a replacement. I’ve been much happier with Addiesdive and Steeldive, along with Watchdives. And San Martin gets really good reviews, though I don’t have one yet.

    A nice looking collection! I agree with you about the fact that buying watches from AliExpress adds a lot of value to a watch collection. I have 4 watches from AliExpress out of a collection of 10. I have a few Casios and recently I bought my first swiss watch at a very good bargain on the secondary market. My suggestion is that you shouldn't have all of your watch from only one place. I personally like variety and there is value in other places as well.

    I’ve been getting a few watches from AliExpress. A few Tandorio watches, a 1963, and a high beat Starking watch. I’ve also gone down the rabbit hole of buying watch parts and assembling them myself. This helped me revamp my old Seiko 5 that was gaining five minutes per day and had a beat up case. It now sits in a gold diver case with a lumed bezel and rubber strap with a matching gold clasp. I’ve modified many of my Tandorio watches with better dials and hands, and in one case, I learned how to swap out the day/date wheels for a stealth diver.

    These are fantastic, especially the rechargeable RCA. Miind you, the "coat pocket " and "shirt pocket " descriptions might be (literally!) stretching things a bit. My first transistor radio was an off - brand, AM - only pocket model, costing £1.99 from Woolworth's in 1973 for my 12th birthday. Quite a solid little thing from Hong Kong; lasted about three years till the on/off - volume switch broke, by which time I had upgraded to a Soviet LW/MW radio -alarm (£5, the brand began with a V). The radio was OK, but the alarm was actually a 4 - jewel mechanical clock which went off like a miniature tractor engine seizing up. Gained a fair bit too. Set it on Monday and by Friday I was getting up 20 minutes early for school. Sorry for the ramble. Very entertaining video. Cheers 🍻!

    • @radiowyn1703
      @radiowyn1703 24 дні тому

      Hello again, and thank you for tuning in and watching my radio video! Yes, there aren't many pockets that would accommodate the RCA Victor set, but the little global sets would fit into the average shirt pocket. If it was 1960 and I had a choice, I would definitely have gone for the RCA over the Global sets, due to the sound quality. Although, I love the look of the little Global radios. I remember the combined transistor radio and mechanical alarm sets you describe. It must have been an expensive item. I had a windup foldaway pocket travel alarm clock, with a very similar annoying alarm to yours. It did manage to get me up most of the time for school. I now have a collection of these old travel alarms too. They tend to pop up in charity shops in mint condition and cheap. Most seem to have been unused. All good fun. Thank you for sharing your radio stories. Cheers! 👍

    Marvellous AliExpress mini collection (trust me, it won't be mini for long! ). That £14 ani - digi looks like great fun, and the Seagull 1963 is a good basis for any collection though, as you've already seen, that ST 19 movement may not always be the most reliable. If you get a good 'un, however, they are usually pretty accurate. As for value, I bought a solar powered chronograph for $175 - a Tactical Frog, no less, with a Seiko VS 75 movement. The Seiko version is exactly $1000 at the bricks and mortar shop here in Moscow! Haven't owned a good radio for years now, but I might give the watches a rest and look for a nice set with shortwave. Enjoyed the video. Subscribed. Cheers 🍻!

      Hello, thank you for watching and subscribing. It's good to hear from you and know that my video has been seen as far away as Moscow. I have already added a few more to this collection. A couple of Addiesdives and another Sugess ST19 panda to replace the one I sent back, this time a Top Time version. The biggest surprise for me was the £14 Naviforce watch. Hard to understand how they make them so cheap. I will keep one of those Tactical Frog watches in my AliExpress basket. I need to slow down a little and wait until the next sale. I have a c1973 Soviet Union manufactured Vega VEF-206 shortwave set in my collection. A great sensitive set. Radios take up a lot of space, so I thought it would be a good idea to collect a few watches. All good fun! Cheers 👍

      @@radiowyn1703 Yes, I bought the Sugess Top Time homage for my brother's birthday a couple of years ago. He says it's still quite accurate. The only problem I've had in three years of using AliExpress was with the last watch I bought back in May - a Pagani Design Doxa lookalike with the NH38 movement for $100. Took eleven days to ship, but it was DOA. I'd used a third - party retailer (bad idea) , and they blanked me. So I made a twenty - second video of me shaking and winding the thing with no joy and used it to open a dispute. Ten days later I received a full refund - retailer never asked me to return the watch, so I thought I would examine the movement. Just got the bracelet off when...it started ticking! The timegrapher couldn't provide an accuracy reading; gave it a full wind, set the correct time and left it. After two days, the movement had gained five hours or, if you prefer, plus 9000 seconds a day. Why!? Then I remembered that mechanical movements run very fast if they become magnetised. Ran it once through my demagnetiser before going to work. Got back from work and put it back on the timegrapher: minus 22 seconds a day. Not great but, relatively, miraculous compared with +9000 s/d! Uploaded two five-minute videos to UA-cam covering the saga, which might have rewarded your time more than reading this waffle. Anyway, your current collection and ideas for future additions are both superb. As us watch nerds say, wear them in good health. Cheers 🍻!

      Hello, thank you for your comment. Yes, they are extremely close to the original MK2. You have to be an expert enthusiast to spot the differences. The pedal cranks are the most obvious, along with the lower sissy bar height, due to modern regs. Raleigh worked with enthusiasts to get it close to the original 70s bikes. I agree the original is very heavy in comparison, and much better made, with better sound quality. Sadly, not much use as a radio these days. where the replica can still receive FM. Analog radio is much better, so easy to tune, and has much better sound reproduction. Roberts made some excellent sets. I have an RP28 with the presets.
