    This is true for some and not true for others. Orson Wells himself made Citizen Kane before seeing a lot of films so he is giving this advice. On the other hand Sergio Leone watched thousands of movies in his youth and he made some of the most cinematogrophically advanced films of all time. It is hard to tell wether to follow this advice or not

    Orson Wells brought his experience of the stage (shadows; working with almost nothing) to film. that was his route. you have to come from some kind of route to making films. A lot of directors came from cinematography first. Start somewhere. Some came from war.
