Adventures In Reach (AIR) hopes to expand what adventures are possible for you, teach the skills to help make that happen, inspire you to get out of a rut, and increase your confidence outdoors. We encourage you to challenge yourself and try something new, from a backyard adventure to an expedition. Although all outdoor adventures are fair game, AIR generally focuses on small sailboat or Sunfish sailboat sailing and camping, rappelling, knots, ropes, hammock camping, outdoor adventures with dogs, compass orienteering, canoeing, wilderness travel, outdoor gear, camping, hiking, and cold weather camping and survival.

    Please help to increase safety factor by using rappel rings. If a carabiner side loads with webbing it can fail. Carabiners are designed for rope and not webbing. Where you clip onto your anchor you may make the loop a little Longer and attach the rappel ring with a girth hitch (put loop through the donut open the loop and pull the rappel ring through it, then dress the webbing at the top and tighten). Cheaper than carabiners and stronger.

    I always consider the exit plan to be the critical element when sailing a beach cat (or any boat) on to a lee beach. How am I going to get back off the beach. Though Hobie 16s will sail through just about anything

    😂 one of the advantages of the Sunfish is that I can easily just drop the sail and paddle in using my kayak paddle. Not knocking the Hobie. It’s a great sailboat, a ton of fun! But spend and complexity comes with a cost. I think I’ll just keep in sailing my Sunfish (and Sailfish and Grumman sailing canoe) and find someone with a bigger boat who needs a crew!

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach 3 дні тому

      I certainly agree. The Sunfish is simple, quick to get on and off the water, and turns into a big paddleboard pretty quick.

    This looks like a good method for approaching a dock. For a beach landing with the wind blowing toward the beach, I think backing in would be an easier method. Joe on JoyRiderTV has a video demonstrating how to do it. I posted this very question on the Hobie 16 forum 5 or 6 years ago and Matt Miller suggested the backing in method also. I never actually got a chance to try it myself though.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach 3 дні тому

      I generally just sail up onto the beach when I have a chance. I usually avoid having rudders risk being near land when until the end of the day (camping) when I'm pulling it out. For boat ramps I'm going bow first to load on the trailer. I do agree that backing could be controlled with less potential for wind catching sails, but I guess I haven't felt I needed to.

    I dont get the quilt thingy. My sleeping bag has a zipper all the way, if I want a blanket i just unzip it. I beleive people just use quilts because it sounds cool.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach 3 дні тому

      The main reason is to save weight for backpacking. It cuts out most of the zipper, and the bottom to achieve the weight. It's not a perfect system, but it does keep you warm and does save weight.

    Important difference is that quilt requires more (bigger R value)from the sleeping pad and your warmth depends on it. On really cold winter camping it is a risk I wouldn’t take.

  • @scottgephart9749
    @scottgephart9749 Місяць тому

    Use two straps, both wrapped around the pad. Then, move the clips in away from the edge of the pad (2 to 3 inchesin, from the edges of the pad). That prevents the "quilt killer" issue, and it ensures that the quilt stays wrapped around you better. I’ve found that limits cold drafts the best.
