Got No Jig? Hand build a model railroad turnout anyways! | New Romley Track work begins. Update 139
Some tips on hand building a turnout. I had one more turnout to build for the Romley area. But I did not have the right Fast Tracks jig to do it. So I have been putting it off. It can be done but it takes a little more work. I will tell you some tips on doing this. [ Bonus Content ]
Dad has been doing a lot of cleaning up around the Train Layout.
I removed the temporary track running through Romley Colorado. And I have been able to start hand laying the track in this area. Really want to finish off the scenery here.
Thanks for watching!

A quick update along with some railfanning on our model railroad. Time to get serious about the track plan at Romley. Really been wanting to get this area done. It is the first thing you see when you come into our train room. My Dad has been fixing up some tank cars. So we are going to run a train a few times so you can get a look at the cars. Use a push pin (map pin?) to hold the turnout in central position and another one to hold the ground throw in position while you put a track pin through the other hole in the ground throw.

Rather than pinning the rail an alternative option might be super or hot gluing it to the paper in a few spots with slots for a few key ties cut out so you can place them underneath for soldering after you have glued the rails in the correct position on the paper. Even better if you create a notch which ties can be put into and be flush with the surface on which the template sits. Downside is you would need to get the glued paper off once done and each "template" only can be used once but less worry that you will somehow muck up the gauging after you have got it right or when soldering.

Functionality trumps all else. Love your layout. I have a couple of broken locomotives I plan to use as wrecks on the layout I'm gonna build in the near future. I had to tear down my layout when I lived in Georgia when we moved to Tennessee and haven't rebuilt it yet. Wife wants to move off the mountain where we live and get closer to town. After we move this last time I will build an HO and an O scale layout since I've collected enough Lionel 027 to build an O scale layout. Strictly DC for me, no DCC as I hate the tinny sound of HO DCC. Your dad did a great job on those retaining walls. Cherish those moments you spend with your dad! After much swearing and cussing I just completed a Tichy Train Group flatcar which has an amazing detail on the underside of the flatcar. Even though the brake detail was kinda fiddly, it came out great. I followed the directions to the letter and wish I hadn't. I broke all the stirrups off when I was installing the bronze phosphor grab irons. If you ever build this kit, install the stirrups LAST. I did make my own stirrups out of some desk top staples from the stapler and they came out looking good. I painted every board on the deck a different shade of brown mixing the colors in a communion cup as I went. No two boards are the same color. Looks really good now that I've finished it. Cheers from eastern TN

Wow, dude, you remind me of Toby Keith. I just hate that he passed yesterday. Love your video and your enthusiasm. I gain a lot of knowledge from watching videos that other modelers have made. That's sooooo cool that your dad is helping you on the railroad. I'm now 73 and my dad passed last Jan., 2023. Cherish those moments you share with your dad! I love that tunnel portal. I know this video is 2 years old but I just discovered your channel. Guess I'd better subscribe as your layout looks like a work in progress. Again I say, cherish those moments you share with your dad. Love your humor! That reminds me to try and find my architectural tools I had when I went to Southern Tech and learned architectural drawing. I know I've got protractors, compasses and architectural scales with mechanical pencils somewhere around the house. Love the post hole diggers! And what modeler doesn't have a "Chop It?" and tacky glue? I wish I still had my dad, I miss him sooooo much. Cheers from eastern TN

Very nice work. Thanks for posting. What’s the issue with doing the scenery first and then the track work? Thats how it works in the real world. I can imagine a HO scale blasting and drilling operation going through the mountain to create the tunnel. Let’s improvise with firecrackers. 😊😊

I run NCE at my house but Don’s use Digitrax. Which makes it hard for me to remember everything. The icing on the cake is both systems are wired to use a JRMI (think that’s what it’s called) so I don’t have to remember everything. Plus when I use my phone it’s used via Wi-Fi I don’t need to bring a controller.
