  • Started planning out the Stamp Mill for Romley. Right now this is just a big hole in the side of the mountain. And I would really like to get something started.
Added more dirt to the Romley area and I think I am happy with it. Maybe still needs a little more something.
My Dad has made more progress on the retaining wall.
Also we're going to look again at the bridge Jim built.
    Thanks for watching.

A mock up is a great idea 💡 to hide that hole and to also help visualize the mill building !!!! Another nice 👍 update 😊

Don, May I suggest that you get several pieces of cardboard cut to fit the stepped foundation. Then cut different roof lines at different angles. Don’t draw the roof line in, cut it. Insert those one at a time until you find one that pleases your eye. Maybe you need it to go back further into the hill. The current template looked too narrow at the top side.

Hi Don, I think the ground cover came out great. In regards where the cattle are, one would think because of all the cow poop and pee the ground would be a little dark. But I don’t really have a clue, I don’t know anything about cow poop and pee. I really like the newer pop-up sepia photos of the crew. They look like wanted posters. Thanks for the update. Bye.

I grew up with cows ... but I also grew up in a part of the country where the dirt was pretty much a dark brown anyway, so it's hard to say. Once it's dried out, cow manure is pretty light-colored, so if it's been warm and there haven't been cows in that part of the cattleyard for a few weeks, I'd guess it would be pretty light.

I intend to make the cattle area look well used. Just need to figure out for sure what space it will occupy. I think it will be fun to lay it out.

Don, it's looking great as usual!! I'll be coming through the Reno area next summer. I'd love to stop by and see the layout first hand and meet you and your dad!! ...Claude

The town is coming together, do you plan on some grass areas? I like the color of ground in the town. Yeah the cattle pen area is light but am sure you will get it like you want. The mill area is right as you come in the the train room, so I am sure you and your dad want to get the wow factor set up for the rest of the layout. I use mock ups with card stock and pieces of foam board to do mine. I like your mock up of the other mill building at the other end of the layout, granted it is mostly a silhouette and not that wide but it has the rustic look to it. Looking forward to the build.

Looks very good…. I’ve loved and enjoyed the Palisades all along it’s buildout.
So, as to the grout usage…. I too use grout, sometimes mixed with dirt, sometimes not, sometimes regular, sometimes unsanded. A couple things I’ve found that may be of benefit… I often add dry polymer adhesive, which is what’s in grout anyhow, I just up the content with I “dilute” it with dirt or my homemade ballast. When I add the dry adhesive I just add water to set. Which I use 50/50 IPA/water to decrease surface tension. Which I’ve went to using Triton-X to drop surface tension, but that another discussion. Another thing that might be worth trying for coloration is to add powdered tempora paint when you need the color change. Tempora is a little more easily available, but I really like the dry concrete pigments better, very rich and always earth tones. It’s can also be colored later by airbrushing, which I do extensively with ballast, as I basically spray in a dry brush like effect from a low angle on ballast… it’s effectively painting in the light effects from the sunlight I don’t have in my train room. But also acrylic inks work pretty well, but those are especially useful for static grass augmentation, and I love when paints or tools can be multitaskers. As always YMMV, but those are things that have worked for me, nothing original there, I’ve stolen it from others, so it’s incumbent on me to pass it along.
As always, thanks for sharing, I always enjoy the content!

The benefit you have working with cardboard first is if you chop too much off you can cut a new bit.
And the cattle yard needs to be a bit darker. All that poop would make it dark.

    • @ModelRailroading
      @ModelRailroading  3 роки тому

It will end up darker. I did that with another cattle yard and I like it. Also want to make a part of it look wet.

Everywhere is very brown...like, dirt and rocks and stuff. Is there anywhere on the layout where its actually green? You know, like, grass!? And I agree with Norman....if the area where the cattle are is supposed to be muddy, I would think it should be a lot darker.

    • @ModelRailroading

Was going to try and answer this in a video. But that has not happened yet.. Where we live most of the mountains are brown. Except for half a month in the spring. So I naturally lean towards making mine look that way. I do plan on adding some grass and get some green involved. And maybe other areas I will get even greener. I'm just not used to that color.. :)

@@ModelRailroading Fair comment. I live in New Zealnd, so I guess I'm probably more used to seeing a greener countryside. You model what you know, right? :)
