    Ran my first convention game in May 2024, homebrew cinematic for AlienRPG. The best thing I did was run the game for some friends first, months in advance. Then I was able to trim, streamline, and build a pace for it. It was an amazing success! All the players had fun, and all are interested in playing when next year. Even convention staff got positive feedback! Honestly next year I might run the same game for new players, and write another for returning or advanced players.

      The Alien RPG is almost always sold out at conventions. I think I've failed to get into all of the ones I've tried signing up for. So I'm glad to see you're running it some more!

    I manage to play it in one session, I don’t understand how you can spend 15 sessions on this. And I agree cutting the Satillo is the best thing to do, even the book tells you it’s optional, and to cut it if you want a shorter session.

    It wasn't until the sequel ("Against the Rat Men" in DUNGEON FANTASY COMPANION) that I really managed to threaten my players' lives and health. Perhaps I wasn't playing the monsters cleverly enough. The 'Rune Limned Corridor' caused them some terrors but despite the fact that the text says you can't neutralise it my players did find a way and I didn't just nix it.

    Good review :) one thing l will add though is that many people forget when reviewing 7e material is that the philosophy of dice rolls in the 7e book being that dice rolls are not always about failing or succeeding at the task but are also about who has “possession of the story”. As such, nothing “hinges” on dice rolls. Player succeeds, player gets what they want and how they want it (within reason), player fails the roll, GM controls the story and uses it to ramp up the horror (but that can still mean the task is succeeded). Example, failed mechanical repair on the radio could mean player just takes longer doing so, leaving them out of action in combat making life harder for the others, or cannot flee immediately if they want to fix it whilst hearing creatures crawl up the lighthouse side, or they succeed but just takes a little longer whilst secretly the cultist on the other side picks up the signal and heads over. Failed rolls shouldn’t mean failure at the all the time.

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC 8 днів тому

      This is such a great reminder. CoC has always had a reputation that "one bad roll" can ruin an adventure, but GMs should never let that happen, and always give the players some way of continuing the investigation. At least until Nyarlathotep eats them in the final act!

    I've been loving playing this. It's so fast and perfectly captures the action movie vibe. My group has also been playing everyday Heroes for a bit more crunch and longevity. I don't think I could manage a long running campaign of Outgunned, partially because it openly says not to, but also because I think players might get a little bored of it. It seems the perfect game for short spurts.

  • @chaosmeisters6781

    Great Video! The style reminds me of Seth Skorkowsky a lot. It's balanced and fair. OG is my favourite system and has replaced Savage Worlds for me, so I am biased. Although I can't entirely agree with some of them, I can still see your negative points. Luckily OG has "modular crunch," so ignoring specific subsystems, as you suggest for Weak Points or Brawl, is valid and won't break the systems. Which is a big plus for OG for me. For VTT, there are now two complete fan-made Foundry Systems, sheets for Roleapp and Let's Role, and a system for Alchemy. The latter is still in development and will be the only official VTT support at this time.

    I find action-based games incredibly boring (even the great ones), because they’re a mechanic not a genre (I’m sure plenty disagree) Bu I love the narrative emphasis and chase rules in this review so I’ll be picking it up. Thanks for a great review

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC 11 днів тому

      I agree, action is definitely more about style and pacing vs. genre. But I always felt a lot of systems didn't work well once you try running a modern game with lots of explosions, gunfights, and chases. The number of D20 based systems where guns did like 1D8 damage and took over a dozen hits to take down a big bad drove me insane...

      Outgunned is largely the same, they just split the descriptors between Role (Commando, Spy, Face, etc) and Trope (Hunk, Bad to the Bone, Charming Bastard, etc.). But I can't wait to see more of them, since I bet you'll see a lot of the same ones combined in Outgunned.

      @@1ShotJC Yah, true. And I do love OG, so it's not a criticism. More an observation. I think it was the more freestyle approach of the tags. So, you could be "cheater rebel", or "gunslinging professor", or a "rebel professor", or even "medical medic". That felt more open than the current roles and tropes.

    For preventing the burning of the ship, you could say the whole ship oozes water or a wet substance from everything. Consider it as a side effect of the spell which transported the ship there, melding the ship with some of the ocean it was in when teleported. A melding kind of like in the movie The Fly, only with the ship & water.

    I actually had a really fun dungeon I built with Kobolds in mind as well. The plot behind the dungeon was that the leader had made a deal with a devil because a rift to the abyss had begun to open in the neglected part of the cave. Only minor demons (the ones that look like a blob and are only like... I think CR 2 or 3... Maybe 1.) were coming out of the pit. I took the soul coins from Descent into Avernus and gave one to each Kobold commander as a way for them to get an emergency heal if possible, but a large number of the Kobolds were suspicious of the coins, so the chief had the commanders hold the eggs, young and a portion of the warren as hostages while the rest were trained with siege tactics against the demons. With that, the dungeon had two major paths the players could pick: A: A rather large, open-looking chamber with barricades, traps and other such threats or... B: An unlit cavern that took advantage of the Kobolds darkvision to allow them the chance to shoot arrows at incoming adventurers that were holding torches. Making use of the mass attacks rules, my players realized quickly that both ways were dangerous because now the Kobolds knew they were coming and had formed Phalanxes to cut off the party's progress. My players had to retreat and we sadly never finished the dungeon, but it was a really fun setup that I'd love to use again.

    I've run Enemy in Shadows when it was still two adventures! Using rules adapted for 2e. I allowed my players to get sidetracked with the tournaments in Bogenhafen (they eagerly re-enacted the plot from the film A Knight's Tale with stolen armor), which gave them some extra cash to blow on items to make themselves less likely to die from a trip & fall. This came in handy at the end of the adventure with the run-in with the daemons.

    A VERY streamlined version. Have always loved the overall system mechanics. Just WAY too many rules to read through. Way too many skills. Take a note from Savage Worlds. Trim down all of that stuff by a large factor by combining a lot of it. Especially weapon skills. I mean, many weapons are similar enough that you shouldn't need a skill for each one. I know it's more realistic, but it's too much. Generalize more.

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC 12 днів тому

    Comments. 1. You made no mention of the Army vehicle(s) the soldiers would have come in, probably at least one truck. 2. Except for the grenades, they might have found rifles, and/or a pistol or two. 3. How did the alien know about or control the bombing by the aircraft? Overall, it sounds like a good adventure.

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC 12 днів тому

      I think I supposed the troops were dropped off, and then the truck pulled back to a perimeter, given the potential danger of the meteorite. (Doubt if that's military protocol, but hey, this is a 1950s b-movie here). And then most of the soldiers' weapons melted when the meteor cracked open. Finally, I think the aliens were monitoring the radio transmissions so knew about the incoming bombing. Now, why they bothered to save the PCs is anyone's guess... but aliens love messing with humans...

    I'm planning on running this for two brand new players. As another way to have them contact the main land and/or fighting the deep ones, I was thinking of having two barrels of fuel that can either be set on fire as a massive explosion, to get the attention of the mainland, or as something that can be used as a defensive measure: torches, Wall of Fire (with the risk of burning down the light house).

      That’s a fun idea. And the deep ones are smart enough that if the PCs lock themselves in the lighthouse they might very well use it against them!

      @@1ShotJC Just had an idea, borrowing from Doctor Who. If/when they look in the binoculars, instead of having a Deep One Hybrid on the other shore...I'm gonna have counterparts of the Investigators. Like the Doctor Who episode Sunken Earth. Just for shits and giggles. It won't come into play, but it'll be a nice creepy thing to throw in.

    The map on this thing was so confusing I drew it out on 3d graph paper to better understand the layout.

    4th Edition became a weird boring and dry read. It's not easy to use or get around either. I tried so many times to get into 4th ed, and it just didn't work. I stuck with the main 3rd edition book and it just works. I have a ton of supplements, and it's just easy to use. The book is easy, and actually fun to read. Third is the best. :)

      Yes it's uniformly a tech manual now. That's fine describing mechanics but it lost most of SJ's wit from earlier editions.

    Which version should i play if doing 5e? Do i need to modify? Newish dm here

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC 22 дні тому

      There’s an OSR version which is for original versions of D&D, which I think work a little better for horror vs 5E. But it’s not to hard to convert that to low level 5E by basically doubling the damage and hit points of the NPCs. You can Google more elegant OSR to 5E conversion guides, but for the adventure which is mostly investigative, that seems to work fine.

    This is a fun adventure. I ran it with my group, and I enjoyed it very much. To kind of add to it I ended up having the English teacher also be necessary to cast the spell because she was able to read all of the big words. This was because of how they roleplayed their interaction with her previously. A big thanks for making this.

    I agree, Gateways to terror adventures are far too simple, there are better beginners options that make the experience of playing call of cthulhu more fun.

I did some unique endimgs depending on how they ended it even included something crazy if they decided to go down the hole in the mine. It went smooth and was rly fun for my first ever session ive ran.

      @1ShotJC I was going to have them die and then since in the story we are dealing with the spirit realm have them wake up and be surrounded by spirits and be taken into the spirit realm, and would only be revealed after the main story arc had concluded.

    I have just played ths adventure with a group of experienced D&D players that were new to Cthulu. I loved how detailed everything is laid out and how tight and creepy the plot is. What I really disliked is, that the whole thing feels VERY railroaded in the end. The investigatprs dont really have much influence on the outcome of the whole thing. At some point the Seamen come and either flood/kill them or make them run away. This makes it so that I can only recommend this to players that are completely new t pen and paper RPGs. I just never feel good, railroading my players too much.

      Yes, for experienced RPG fans this is definitely a very straightforward adventure without a ton of options. But I think it gives a nice Lovecraftian vibe and shows how easy it is to die in this game. But for experienced roleplayers, I think I'd jump right to other more robust CoC adventures like Dead Light, Viral, or Dead Man's Stop.
