College Football History: Why Hasn’t Notre Dame Joined The Big Ten?
Переглядів 5 тис.2 місяці тому
Notre Dame has remained independent in football despite numerous changes in college sports, such as NIL and conference realignments. Historically, Notre Dame was denied entrance into the Big Ten four times, which significantly influenced their decision to stay independent. These denials were partly due to early 20th-century anti-Catholic sentiment and academic snobbery from Big Ten schools, whi...

    The newspaper's statement that Notre Dame was in Notre Dame, Ind. was for all purposes correct. The campus is considered to have as its hometown Notre Dame, Ind. It's an unincorporated city, outside of South Bend's limits. The U.S. Post Office for the college is called Notre Dame, and though its service area is governed by the university, it still functions as city, with the campus police, and a campus-operated fire department. As it is unincorporated, there is no municipal government, but the Census Bureau recognizes Notre Dame, Ind. as a Census Designated Place. Three bar bets you can win are: Name the city Notre is in, name the city the Indianapolis 500 is run in (that's Speedway, Ind.) and name the city the Las Vegas Strip is in (Las Vegas' city limits are drawn to exclude the strip, as a tax break for those poor, struggling owners of casinos.

    Not only has the ground gotten harder, but bushes have become thornier, and the whole world has become optically blurrier. Meanwhile as to 2024, it's the first year in a while that I haven't signed up to coach, because of uncertainties about my heart rhythm. The atrial ablation I undertook last year held just fine until spring, and now I've started sotalol rather than trying another ablation, and it's hard to tell if it's working so far.

    If you look at the quick shifting before the rule change, slow motion film shows them pretending to come to the "full stop" as required merely by having both feet stationary on the ground, but the body momentum was sustained, which officials couldn't easily see, and well practiced. The 1-second requirement was added so officials could see the players come to a stop.

    Your Heisman vids were great. I always wondered about this mysterious character who managed to get THE college football award named after him, and still remain so unknown! I agree with you about the '24 season. I haven't been this excited about the start of a season in a long, LONG time. I'm right in the middle of Ducks country, and the "O" a very highly visible thing in these parts, and it would be cool to see a rivalry develop. Excited to have them in our conference...and rated in the pre-season top 5! Huskers are poised to made a significant improvement, as well. Counting down the days. GBR!

    • @CollegeFootballHistory
      @CollegeFootballHistory 3 дні тому

      It isn't about being first. It's about the time being right for the foward pass to be accepted by everyone as a part of the regular offense and not a "gimmick". When Carlisle was doing it, it wasn't accepted as such. When Notre Dame did it in 1913, it was an idea whose time had come. It didn't hurt than Notre Dame and particularly Rockne, were damned good at marketing....

    Haha, brother I went to college I. Greensboro, NC. I grew up one town away from there. But when you said "gofurd..." and said it was in North Carolina, I was stumped and had to Google who in the heck Clemson played when they won 122-0. It turns out it was GUILFORD college, in Greensboro. That's "gill furd" phonetically, named for the county that Greensboro and High Point are in. I went to a different school in Greensboro, but you can still trust me on this one: GUILFORD, pronounced GILL FURD.
