Why special inputs are so frustrating in Street Fighter 1
Переглядів 26 тис.2 місяці тому
The first Street Fighter game is an important part of fighting game history, but if you've ever tried to play it, you probably know that it's pretty frustrating. Why won't hadoukens and shoryukens come out with the usual motion inputs? Yes, negative edge is part of it - but there's more to the story. In this video I go down the rabbit hole to figure out exactly what the timing requirements are ...

    koihime and phantom breaker are my underrated beginner middle ground games, that I have mixed feelings with as far as single player casual content goes. that both suffer from being hard to find players koihime is just so simple it's easy to learn. know how to play footsies, remember everything is minus, and you are a decent koihime player no matter what fg your main games are, every character has the same frame data with most combos being 5b special, outside of hougeki routes which you can follow a similar basic structure with anyone. they removed story mode in ryorairai version for some reason. still have arcade mode but just an intro and ending without the other vn cutscenes between matches. pbo is just kind of dumb mashing fun and freedom to jump around, with odd mechanics. story mode is ok but frustrating since theres no guides on where you are supposed to continue to get different routes. while some character's story arcs pretty much got unreasonably hard to accomplish, and i dont know if changing ai difficulty even affect them(seem too hard).

I think with the new archetypes and mechanics, they've reached that level of complexity that their known for, so an average player watching a strive match is like civilians trying to keep up with Goku and Vegeta sparring, if you haven't gotten used to the speed, punishment, mechanics, you have a very high ladder to climb. Playing against people who are better than you is how you get good, and losing doesn’t mean you aren’t improving. Go play assassins creed or horizon zero dawn if you need to win anything.

    I come from melee. So this idea of not playing a game because its old is weird to me. But if we are talking about picking up like DoA3 or something in 2024 then sure it makes sense to avoid it but the popular old games why not learn them? Also I just got into Strive like last month. I like picking up a game after things have been figured out.

    While I'm no expert I have a couple of sticks. The first one has a long name, I hope I get it right. It's the Hori Real Arcade Pro Hayabusa Viewlix. I love the stick because like you mentioned it has mechanical switches and everytime you move it an eighth of the way you hear a click so if you do a fireball, you'll hear 3 clicks (down, down-forward and forward). Then I have another stick I just broke out because it had been collecting dust. I don't know the name of it but it's the Razer one with Dragon Ball art on the face of it and the box is orange on the sides. Why I like that stick is because it seems stiffer and goes back to the neutral position quicker if I ever wanted to do an Electric Wind God Fist. Also I have a Razer fightpad and the directional pad is like a elevated disc but similar to the Hori Real Arcade Pro Hayabusa Viewlix's stick it has mechanical switches that click every eighth increment of movement and you can sense if you've passed every necessary direction to complete different motions.

    @bunnybreaker Місяць тому

    I'm loving seeing your fighting game journey. Might be worth trying some older Capcom Marvel games for easier combos while you're still learning though. SNK stuff is generally harder than say 'Marvel Superheroes' or the Vs series. As for your final question about the differences between sticks, there are a few main things. The stiffness, ie., how much it resists. The activation and "throw" ranges; the distance you can move the stick before it triggers a directional input, and the max distance it can move at all (nothing to do with in-game "throw range"). Deflection, ie., if you hold left and then let go, does it swing back and cause a "right" input (this is generally bad). There's also the height, and the shape/size of the ball/bat top. Most of these really come down to personal preference. I fully get you on not being able or wanting to spend loads of money on a different lever or buttons. For the lever, if you can get a Sanwa JLF on the cheap you should. It's kind of the OG "standard" and then you can use that as a baseline when comparing reviews and specs of other levers. One option you absolutely should try ASAP though, is getting a bunch of different springs, and trying them in the lever you have. They're really cheap and can make a big difference. I've not spring modded the stock 8BitDo lever, but I did with my ancient MadCatz SF4 SE, and I used it happily for years. When I bought the Qanba Gravity lever for my 8BitDo I also bought like 3 extra different springs in case I didn't like the default. Another factor for stick feel and customisation is the gate. Not sure if you can swap gates on the stock 8BitDo, but worth looking into. There's no "best" gate, it's just preference, but I *wouldn't* recommend a circle gate for beginners or anyone having trouble with direction precision. Sorry not sorry for the essay. Good luck and have fun. 👍🏽

      A fun fact for me is that ive spent my whole childhood playing on pc (flash games) and on mobile. But in 2020 i couldnt use my fathers pc beause of his "Games have viruses" mind set (But i still love you dad🥰) also it was one of the only ways to my mother acess her bank account so we couldnt risk that much. So my only device at the moment was my phone. I didnt cared about fgs then because simply never found one at time. My first contact with a fg was Kung Fu Do on mobile that you can still play now (honestly for a low budget chinese fg they did an incredible job) there is no online, just arcade and survival. There are inputs here but they are done with the directions alone like just ⬇️↘️➡️ , ⬇️⬆️or ⬇️⬇️ (each character had only one special) . There is only 3 buttons being attack (a single punch or kick that doesnt combo), super and pause. You can attack while jumping and crouching but you can only block by back and no crouch blocking (there is no lows anyway). Funny because i simply ignored the inputs, spammed punch and super when he was avaliable. I would only care about a fg again when i watched a Guilty Gear compilation. And it wasnt just a video, it showed faust doing the fists of anihilation in the whole xrd cast. Then another video got recommend for me: An 1 hour long video about Guilty Gear lore. I watched it all and i was absolutely hooked with how good it actually is and still makes me all hyped. I still know a lot about the first 3 games but i forgot about xrd onwards (i dont want spoilers). Then i started emulating then in my gba and psp emulators ( Im the one of the 5 gg Judgement players ). And ive never struggled with any inputs outside of the dp (wich i mastered after just doing ➡️⬇️➡️) I love the characters and music even if heavy metal inst my type. Also i love BlazBlue and Under Night and i plan finish Calamity Trigger story before the year ends ( I will start Arakune mode soon) . There is even a mobile fightcade called ggpo (My name is Bad Blood here and im rank C in most games). Now i can play on pc again but i must re learn all inputs now, but my quarter circle is becoming better so i will play fgs now.

    I think a necessary component to get new people into fighting games is an extensive offline mode. I love Arcsys, but Strive was lacking in that department when compared to BB:Tag, for example. I know bots will never offer the real-life unpredictability of a human component, but they are great target dummies to test combos and mixups on. Most players don't want to watch footage or tutorials to emulate their playstyle, my favorite thing about fighting games is discovering combos on my own and then trying to apply the sauce online to see if it's true. The best point you made, though, is that the best fighting game to play is the one you're interested in. I mostly jump around Strive, BB:Tag, and Tekken because they have something I like. Even if MK and SF are more popular, they never resonated with me, so I looked elsewhere. I hope your video encourages people to jump into a fighting game, the FGC always needs new blood :)

    I think the crux of the issue is very simple: Fighting games are NOT for you if you hate losing. The simple fact is, no matter what game you pick, be it GGAC+R, Strive, or SF6, you WILL get perfected over and over again. You WILL get absolutely clowned on by people better than you. And because it's a 1v1 game, you DO NOT have the "oh its the other guys fault, not mine! I'm awesome!" excuse that team games like League of Legends or whatever have. YOU lost, it's ALL your fault, get over it... That's really tough for some people to handle. My advice? Don't start your experience with fighting games by playing ranked matchmaking. Start by playing against a single person. It can be one buddy you have that also wants to play. Even if your buddy is a 5x EVO champion and you have absolutely no chance of even coming close to winning.. Playing against a person you can talk to and practice with is always going to be more fun. And you will learn A LOT. And lets say you've got no friends who like fighting games. Maybe you don't have any gamer friends at all. Guess what? EVERY fighting game, even the old ones like +R, have dedicated communities on Discord etc. and have channels exclusively for beginners where you can play against total newbies and get advice from good players too. I started playing Fighting Games about a year ago and found the fgc community one of the most welcoming out there for those who want to try. Tl;dr Going 0W-50L isn't made fun of. Its respected. Meet some people and get on that grind. Lose 500 games in a row and improve every time, and enjoy the process. Be humble. If you can't handle losing by your fault alone, the genre just isn't for you.

    Something TheMainManSwe said about learning Tekken was not to overthink it. If you could manage to learn just 10 or 20 of the character's move list, then you're good to go! More of your time should be spent having fun and learning movement, and you'll get a feel for the game.

    This is the worst comparison you'll ever read, but Street Fighter 1 is important to fighting game history, just like WW1 is important to the history of our world. But I would neither throw you into WW1 if you are interested in real life history, nor would I throw you into SF1 if you are interested in fighting games. Both are important, but neither needs to be experienced first hand. This is a thought that made a lot more sense in my mind. Whoops I feel like it would be way better to compare playing SF1 to being thrown into the stone age, if someone's interested in the history of tools and technology, but that thought came later, so I'll have you read the cursed one, first.

      @@lucas_lipp wow 😅 that’s intense. I had a comparison I was going to make in this vid but I’ll probably use in a future vid about sf2 instead. Before the first iPhone, Apple collabed with Motorola on the Motorola rokr (aka iTunes phone), which was the first phone to have iTunes on it, and basically wasn’t a very good phone. I feel like sf2 is the first iPhone, and sf1 is the Motorola rokr

      @@frumiousgaming Yeah, that one probably makes a lot more sense. IoI For the record, I think SF1 is an interesting game to play for people who are already used to fighting games, I'm just still upset, as I'm unable to beat Adon, to be honest.

    Those pressure buttons were an absolute pain in the ass. You'd wind up just wailing on them, so they'd break, or the rubber around them would get worn out and crack. A relic of a more gimmick-y time, I suppose.
